Did Gloria Gaynor write 'I am what I am' for her lgb fans?

Just wondering if anyone knows? The lyrics are very...eh, gay friendly? To say the least.

by Anonymousreply 39October 4, 2018 10:49 PM

Look up who wrote the song.

by Anonymousreply 1October 4, 2018 5:05 PM

She didn't write that song

by Anonymousreply 2October 4, 2018 5:06 PM

Take away OP’s gay card.

by Anonymousreply 3October 4, 2018 5:09 PM

But why did she choose to sing it? Is she lgb friendly? Does she suport gay rights? It's hard to figure her out. Diana ross always acknowledged her lgb fans.

by Anonymousreply 4October 4, 2018 5:10 PM

Gloria Gaynor wrote the " Star Spangled Banner."

by Anonymousreply 5October 4, 2018 5:11 PM

Gloria Gaynor wrote the Bible because she was bored on a Greyhound one weekend.

by Anonymousreply 6October 4, 2018 5:12 PM

I believe Gloria Gaynor has been vocally supportive of gay rights. Heck, she wouldn't have had a career without gays.

by Anonymousreply 7October 4, 2018 5:19 PM

I found Gloria's Last Supper fresco in Milan a bit disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 8October 4, 2018 5:20 PM

Gloria Gaynor wrote the theme to the original Star is Born, which she starred (portraying Esther Rolle) along with Fredric Chopin (as Portland Maine) I'm embarrassed for you, not knowing your entertainment facts.

by Anonymousreply 9October 4, 2018 5:21 PM

R9, I thought Gloria Gaynor WAS Chopin?

by Anonymousreply 10October 4, 2018 5:27 PM

"I am Mrs. Fredric Chopin!"

by Anonymousreply 11October 4, 2018 5:32 PM

Ms. Gaynor adapted the lyrics from dialogue she wrote for the original Popeye cartoons. Everyone knows that.

by Anonymousreply 12October 4, 2018 5:42 PM

OP, you got it all wrong, you idiot. She wrote "I'm Coming Out," not "I Am What I Am."

by Anonymousreply 13October 4, 2018 5:55 PM

I read that the feud with her sister Mitzi began in early childhood.

by Anonymousreply 14October 4, 2018 6:00 PM

I'm Gloria Gaynor Moonves

by Anonymousreply 15October 4, 2018 6:03 PM

[quote] I read that the feud with her sister Mitzi began in early childhood.

They were both fighting for the attention of their mother Janet, so it's understandable.

nice R16, an RBI for you!

Gloria Gaynor's best work is "Catcher in the Rye".

by Anonymousreply 19October 4, 2018 7:05 PM

Everyone knows Donna Summer wrote I Am What I Am. It was just a few years before she recorded the smash pop hit Gloria.

by Anonymousreply 20October 4, 2018 7:09 PM

"Gaynor is a Christian and has released a Contemporary Christian album in late 2013"

Is she another Donna Summer?

Did she change her name to Gaynor to appeal to us?

by Anonymousreply 21October 4, 2018 7:12 PM

Gloria Gaynor-Estefan won the Oscar for best musical score for The Lion King. She later changed her name to Doria and the rest is history...

by Anonymousreply 22October 4, 2018 7:16 PM

Christian Gaynor is a country artist. He had a hit called "Am I? What?" So he often gets confused with Gloria Gaynor, which is weird because she is much blonder.

by Anonymousreply 23October 4, 2018 7:18 PM

Wow, my first stalker...

by Anonymousreply 24October 4, 2018 7:19 PM

Gloria when reading Descartes took vehement issue with 'I think, therefore I am', and instantly asserted her own philosophical position. The rest is showbiz history.

by Anonymousreply 25October 4, 2018 7:25 PM

Fun thread, but OP, the song was written for the musical La Cage Aux Folles. It was written by composer Jerry Herman. La Cage Aux Folles is based on the French film of the same name, and is also the basis for the movie the Birdcage.

by Anonymousreply 26October 4, 2018 7:25 PM

Hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssss r26 LIAAAAAAAAAAR!

by Anonymousreply 27October 4, 2018 7:34 PM

R26 Thank you and I am aware of that now and yes, I agree, fun thread. We have a lot of comedians on DL clearly.

I'm not a fan of disco nor am I of that generation.

I don't even like the song. I just wanted to know if Gloria choosing to sing it meant something more. I wanted to know if she was truly for gay rights or just pandering to her audience. Yes she performed at gay venues and spoke of lgb here and there. She's a born again Christian.

Anyway, forget it. I'LL DO my own research.

by Anonymousreply 28October 4, 2018 7:35 PM

By the way, OP, you're an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 29October 4, 2018 7:52 PM

I'm okay

by Anonymousreply 30October 4, 2018 8:00 PM

Donna Summer, the undisputed Queen of Disco, wrote or co-wrote most of her hits. Gloria didn't write squat and was a very ordinary singer too. But "I Am What I Am" is one of her few genuinely good recordings, somehow the song perfectly suits her voice. I also love "Never Can Say Goodbye" and think it's better than Michael Jackson's original. One of only 2 of her songs that made the Top 10 (Donna had 10 gold and platinum disco hits.)

by Anonymousreply 31October 4, 2018 8:02 PM

Love me some GG.

Yes Freddie Perren was a great disco producer, lots of hits with lots of different acts.

by Anonymousreply 33October 4, 2018 8:32 PM

Sadly, in recent years Gaynor has given interviews indicating she is not supportive of gay marriage. She now alters the lyrics to I Will Survive to add references to God and faith. She couches her comments in “wanting to lead her fans to Christ” and “agree to disagree” on certain topics but it’s clear where she stands.

by Anonymousreply 34October 4, 2018 9:37 PM

But who cares considering she only has a few thousand fans at most. "I Will Survive" remains popular for it's lyrics, despite being awful music, no one cares about the mediocre singer who first warbled it.

by Anonymousreply 35October 4, 2018 9:40 PM

Excuse me, but Miss Gaynor is a great singer.

by Anonymousreply 36October 4, 2018 10:12 PM

I was a gay teen when her I Am What I Am came out and I loved that song and the ballad that was on the flip side (I think it ass called "More Than Enough".) Anyway, she was on a local talk show in Boston, one of those morning local TV things hosted by local Regis and Kathie Lee's in the days before Regis and Kathie Lee ruined local tv. And Gloria Gaynor comes out and lip syncs to More Than Enough, which the hosts strangely introduced as her new single, even though I Am What I Am was the A-side and single. Well, the male host asked her about her gay fans and something and Miss Christian said--and I heard this myself--"Oh, honey. I believe you love the sinner and you hate the sin."

I have loathed that fucking cunt ever since.

by Anonymousreply 37October 4, 2018 10:25 PM

I can be as stupid and offensive as I want to. Somebody wrote me this song called "I Will Survive" and it will survive, forever! Ha ha, one shitty song has kept me afloat ever since.

by Anonymousreply 38October 4, 2018 10:29 PM

Hey thanks op! So many fabulous responses here - it’s just like those Larry King threads! Dunno if you were serious or just baiting the brethren - but either way - it’s been great!
