Oscar number two???
I find this man tedious as an actor and wont watch anything hes in.Empire of The Sun was his last good movie. I did like American Psycho as well.

Have to say, the teaser trailer caught my eye. Wasn't planning on seeing this but now am kinda interested. Bale seems to be going the Day-Lewis route, career wise:
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 3, 2018 1:59 AM |
I totally forgot he's got an Oscar already. The Fighter was such a forgettable film.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 3, 2018 2:03 AM |
He should give acting a try.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 3, 2018 11:11 AM |
He looks more like Chevy Chase.

Does Cheney get burned at the stake in the end of the movie?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 3, 2018 11:38 AM |
Yes r7; Time magazine is calling it the feel good movie of the year!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 3, 2018 11:47 AM |
Cheney is a piece of shit who should have died years ago as God intended when his heart failed.
I don’t watch movies about Hitler and I won’t be watching this.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 3, 2018 11:51 AM |
I like Bale but I have a hard time seeing him as Cheney.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 3, 2018 12:04 PM |
I can have no opinion about his performance until I see his man-sized lockers.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 3, 2018 12:08 PM |
Bale should have stopped time and stayed in his psycho shower zone
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 3, 2018 12:22 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 3, 2018 4:57 PM |

He’s got the facial ticks down pat.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 3, 2018 5:21 PM |
He really does embody Cheney. That facial mole however - the one near his left eye - shows up even thru the heavy facial makeup. His agents can't make him get rid of that? Distracting.
Adam McKay does satirical comedies about current issues - see The Big Short - this looks to be satire, not a drama. I don't think it will be flattering to Cheney, Bush Jr or their allies. If it's as sharp as TBS was I'm in, may see it in cinema.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 3, 2018 8:11 PM |
Sam Rockwell looks nothing like Dubya but he was quite engrossing in the trailer. Made a believer out of me.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 3, 2018 8:12 PM |
Any Dick Cheney portrayal will NEVER be convincing without the obligatory scene showing him biting the heads off sweet, fluffy bunnies and chewing them like taffy. Without such a scene, no actor will ever be potent in the role.

Very good word of mouth after its premiere last night. Could be the Oscar frontrunner considering we have what appears to be a weak year.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 18, 2018 4:15 PM |
He looks more like Bud Dwyer than Dick Cheney.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 18, 2018 4:16 PM |
DL Fave Kim Davis would have played the part even better for half Bale's salary. Bale could have dubbed her in post.

[QUOTE]Very difficult to imagine that ANYONE would want to see this movie, even if he gives the performance of a lifetime.
I felt exactly the same way and reluctantly attended a preview last week. I was bowled over. It's a narrative film. in the style of a Michael Moore documenary. The performances are amazing - they even have Tyler Perry playing Colin Powell. Bale is phenomenal, Adams also great as Lynn. I would expect Oscar noms (Actor/Supp Actress) for both of them. It does not shy away from dealing with Mary Cheney's lesbianism (and how the family exploited it for their own ends). The movie plays out the atrocity of Republican politics from Nixon to now as black comedy, which is perhaps the most palatable way to do it. Cheney's ultimate indifference to the damage he has caused the nation and the world is utterly chilling. The script connects the dots of all the many corporate/right players that infest our political discourse. Of course, since there was no fly on the wall to record the private conversations depicted in the film, we have to take its accuracy with a grain of salt. But the script also makes ample use of the many culprits' public statements and actions, which are incredible enough on their own.

I don't follow The Oscars like most on here, but how often, if ever do characters that are truly evil real people win Oscars for the actor portraying them? I would think that despite the performance the people who vote on these would be repulsed to vote for anything about Dick Cheney except a noose.

R58 I don't know, but for what it's worth I recall reading at the time that Winslet won for THE READER that she was the first to win for playing a Nazi. They nominate evil Nazis and white supremacist but they almost never win.

For someone who used to claim he hated being pushed into acting as a child to help support his family, and how it affected his development, he sure seems to love doing it now - with gusto- as an adult who no longer needs to work at all.
And didn't he drop out of the Ferrari project with Michael Mann a few years ago b/c that role required him to gain some weight, and he didn't feel healthy doing that anymore? I guess he changes his mind like the weather depending on the role.

Yes. I thought Jeremy Renner resembled him more, anyway. Last I heard, Hugh Jackman was playing him in Mann's film starting production sometime next year. Another miscasting.

Jeez, so much hate here. I saw the movie on Christmas Day in a packed theater and it's fantastic. Funny, creative, and the performances are top-notch. Miss it at your peril.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | December 28, 2018 12:20 AM |
Just saw it a few days ago and liked it a lot. It really serves as a valuable reminder of the "alternative facts" and disregard for the Constitution and rule of law from the Bush-Cheney administration, which was likely more truly corrupt than Trump's could ever be.
The only quibble I have is that Mary Cheney is depicted much more sympathetically than she probably deserves. She get very upset when her bitch sister Liz makes her public announcement that the latter doesn't support marriage equality, but this is the same Mary Cheney who sat by during the 2004 campaign with all of the vile, hateful anti-gay rhetoric (which is only alluded to briefly in the film).
It's as if Mary can deal with the rhetoric as long as it doesn't come directly from a family member. Talk about compartmentalizing and magical thinking! And then making that betrayal from Liz all about her (Mary). It's as if she had no idea how truly ruthless her family was - could she have really been that naive?
Lynne Cheney is a nasty piece of work (likely worse than the person Amy Adams portrays). I also forgot that, as a congressman, Dick Cheney voted against the designation of MLK Day.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 1, 2019 12:20 AM |
And one more comment - the irony of Liz's announcement is that while she tossed her sister and the rest of us under the bus, she wound up losing that primary. The film doesn't mention that. Of course, she ran again in 2016 and finally got into Congress.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 1, 2019 12:23 AM |
Love the comments about Mary R75.
But another point , in the Oval Office scene and briefing room scenes, the C Rice and Powell seemed the least buffoonish. But the meekest. It’s like the Rethugs used their race to give their antics respectability knowing that they would also easily submit ..just would love to get in the heads of those two.
Supposedly Colin still regrets that UN speech. But why didn’t he refuse?

Bale is much calmer these days than he used to be. In recent interviews with Adam McKay, he actually said he wouldn't be averse to a comedy project. I almost fell off my chair - he's been on record for years as swearing he'd do nothing but drama, no comedies or rom coms.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | January 1, 2019 2:07 AM |

Maybe if you watched the movie, you could draw an informed conclusion.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 1, 2019 2:53 AM |
Yes, the film does mention that Liz Cheney lost her first race, R76, in a very brief intertitle.
I thought this was going to be much funnier than it was; I laughed once: Dick Cheney tells W. that he won't make an issue out of gay marriage in the 2000 campaign because of his daughter, Mary; W. tells Dick Cheney that he agrees, and that that would be good not just for Dick's Mary, but for "all of the Marys in the world."
Amy Adams deserves an Oscar for getting Lynne Cheney's voice EXACTLY right.

It was quite entertaining, but also extremely depressing. Reminds us of how we got to where we are today.
I thought the choice of the character who serves as the narrator was clever. You don't find out who it is until the movie is 7/8 over. And the mid-movie fakeout credits were also fun. Make sure to stay past the first part of the final credits to see an extra scene with the focus group we met earlier in the film.
