What Is Up With All These Middle Aged Women Dying Their Hair Blue/Purple/Pink?

It's cringe worthy like middle aged women getting tattoos.

Desperate for attention.

I am in favor of this look, and I am unanimous in that.

It's no weirder than young people dying their hair grey. That I can't wrap my head around. Tattoo on some wrinkles while you're at it.

It shows you're still hip, quirky and fun. My SIL does it and she's 49. She's a social worker.

People just want to have fun. When women get older, they start to care less and less about what straight men want and like and they do stuff with their hair and looks. I think it's great honestly.

I agree with R9. Supposedly it's edgy for a 19-year-old to die their hair blue. Well, at 19, you're expected to rebellious. So what? Now, when someone in their 30s and 40s does it, that's more edgy. At that age, you're expected to play be the rules and not flaunt convention. Maybe they're making up for not having expressed themselves when they were younger. Maybe they just like the fun/excitement of the colors. As long as you're polite and respectful to other people, who cares?

The ladies who are old women in their 70s today were young women in the 1970s when "natural" was in. They're not as likely to run a blue rinse through their hair. As women from the 80s and 90s get old you're likely to see more weird hair color come back, because it was more in fashion during their youth.

A woman who looks to be in her fifties and who lives next door dyed her buzz cut hair bright orange. Like florescent orange. She also has long fake claws painted the same color. Prior to that her hair was bright yellow. She appears to be a big fan of Crayola crayons. Considering her age she must have a straight job. What HR would allow employees to come to work looking like Halloween every day?

Agreed, r14. Flower children may let it grow long like in their youth but definitely love the gray and white.

I'm all for doing your own thing but she looks clownish, r17. I've seen drag queens who are absolutely beautiful and flawless. She looks like an extra from Wakanda. Then again, we never really see ourselves the way others see us.

I HATE it. "Quirky" and " Cute" hairstyles where your hair is dyed purple or grey is fine if you are 17 or 22 or maybe even 28. It just looks sad when you are 45.

Personally, I think these women are the ultimate poseurs. All of them were too conformist, snobby or cowardly to dye their hair these colors years ago. 30 years later it's become culturally acceptable to do the Manic Panic thing, and now they want to be patted on the back for being "rebels" bucking the system. They're like these idiots who pride themselves on finally being a "bad ass rebel" for getting tats...right after their 16 year old cousin and 50 year old grandmother gets one.

Women reach a certain age and they become invisible.

I’ve a former colleague, aged around 50 years, who has been dyeing her hair purple for a couple years now. She always makes a huuuuuge production about it on social media (which is my only contact with her nowadays), and I imagine it’s even more insufferable in person. She also is an egregious over-sharer on social media (her husband is even worse!), posting endlessly about every banal event in her and her family’s lives. Did I mention that she is an overweight frau who embraces, loudly, every possible mug-cradler trend and sentiment that comes down the pike? Did I even need to mention that?

I agree with the assessment of R2 — she, and others like her are desperate attention whores. The hair colour is but one symptom of this, with her social media presence being the grossest metastasis of it. A tight group of other fraus reinforce her by applauding her every plea for recognition, and are guilty of enabling her and each other. The best way to combat them is to ignore them, or, when cornered into acknowledging them, just say, “oh, I hadn’t noticed.”

Yeah - very rarely looks good. Blue and green don't look good on anyone. Sometimes a deep two-toned red can be flattering.

I'm in NE Ohio and haven't really noticed much of this. But I live in a Lanford type town not a suburb.

My sister has mentioned it though and said that acquaintances of hers have tried to get her to do it or at least a little spot of her bangs or such. She's not going to.

I’m not an old woman but if I was - I would dye my hair colors just to give op and other cry babies the flux.

It's called a Midlife Crisis, men have them too but they go out and get a 20 something girlfriend or a red sports car.

White hair holds color better than young hair, I guess why not take advantage? Sometimes the colors look good with the skin tone and other times it looks like a cheap 60's sci-fi film.

I don't care what color it is as long as they shampoo that shit. Dirty unwashed hair stinks, it doesn't "look healthier" and it makes you look mentally ill.

Color it every color in the rainbow or go gray, cut it or never cut it, but please wash it a few times a week.

If I were an old woman I’d just be like the Korean old ladies ajumas I think. They truly dgaf. One hit my sister and nobody gave a shit. Those are some cool old ladies and they don’t have to dye their hair goofy colors to get some attention.

I think it's cute. Maybe they had a conservative upbringing or were too scared to do it as teenagers or twenty year olds. They're not hurting anyone and they're enjoying themselves, as another poster said above, it's about the cheapest way to get through a midlife crisis.

The only thing worse is fat women with glitter one their faces.

What would you have older women look like? They seem to be hated by the DL no matter what they do or say. It feels as if the DL would rather they not exist at all or throw a shawl over their heads and become Grandma Moses when they hit 30. And even then, you would still hate them.

My colleague has dyed her hair jet black (or since a few years dark brown) since the 80s, I'd guess. She's sixty now, not one grey hair, who does she think she's kidding? The colour doesn't even match her complexion. Give me a nice, soft, fun purple or pink anytime ...

R44, dark hair looks so harsh against older skin. If your hair has gone gray and you must color it, then I think you should go with Rose Nylund blonde, no matter what your natural color was before.
