The French have been going it for a long time. I've known women named Claude, Laurence, Robert, all pronounced In a French way.
As for Dale, my mother had an older female cousin named Dale and she was born in the late 1920s. We called her Aunt Dale. In seventh grade I had a male classmate named Dale and I told him he had a girl's name. Which led him to beat the crap out of me.

I have a second cousin Dale (female). She was born in the 60s, so not ancient.

[quote] Any male names that you could never see crossing over or vice versa?
Off the top of my head and using names of people I've known I don't imagine a typical mother giving her little girl the pompous name of famous male historical/mythic character, such as: Albert, Augustus, Beowulf (yes, I do know a boy with that name), Cillian, David, Godfrey, Hadrian, Harold, Hubert/Herbert, Iago, Ivan, Jefferson, Luther, Maximillian, Oswald, Rudolf, Samuel, Ulysses, Walter and Xavier. At least not without modified letters e.g. the last 'a' in Davida or an alternative spelling like 'Hadrienne', or a shortening e.g. 'Maxi/ne'. Then again I've known adult women with first names like Ajax, Beauregard, Hermes, Jacques and Tennyson...
Along similar lines I don't see famous female names from history or the literary arts crossing over well. Could you dream of a little boy sporting a goddess-y/imperial/'Disney' name like Anastasia, Athena, Aurora, Belle, Blanche, Carmen, Cassandra, Elisabeth, Eve, Gertrude, Gwendolyn, Helen, Isabella, Jasmine, Juliet, Lilith, Luna, Katherine, Margaret/Marguerite, Maria/Marie, Ophelia, Pandora, Sabrina, Scarlet, Titania or Victoria? (well, this is the Datalounge so perhaps we could imagine it...)

lmao R63 I just got hype for a second there thinking you could be Stacey Blades. But you're 5 years too young :(
actually the glam/hair/prog/operatic and grunge rock scenes are a good place to mine for these names. I mean Alice Cooper? Blackie Lawless? Blaise Bayley? Geddy Lee? Jani Lane? Izzy Stradlin? Layne Staley? Nikki Sixx? Raine Maida? Shannon Hoon? Taime Downey? Tracii (n. Tracey) Guns? All are men.

R72 me too, kinda. In retrospect I question why, but as a little kid I had a crush on pro-wrestler Shannon Moore (affiliate of The Hardy Boyz out of Charlotte, NC) who was in the WWF 'boyband' stable Three Count with Evan Karagias and later moved to TNA to work a 'punk' gimmick. While he's all-American and country to the bone I remember him talking about his Irish ancestry in an interview once, hence his name and his blond meaty looks.
Reports say Shannon is atypical for an ex-wrestler in that he's sweet guy IRL and now retired has his own wildly-successful tattoo-parlor franchise, so maybe that somewhat slightly vindicates me.

In spite of our beloved Marcia meme, I believe 'Jan' is a predominantly male name everywhere else beside English-speaking countries.
In Japan 'ジャン' ('Jyan') is a common 'cute' name for an energetic youth. A handful of famous sentai/anime characters go by it, like this loveable guy..
