Hilary Swank, wearing an elegant long woolen cape with a matching scarf. It couldn't have been a more appropriate welcome to the city.

White trash and trust me she DOES NOT look anything like you think she does.
I saw her in the west village three years ago with no makeup and her hair pulled back and it was not a pretty site. Never mind the parking lot-sized forehead and pasty pale skin. She looked white as a sheet and unhygienic.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 29, 2018 12:40 AM |
Her talent is VERY limited. She demanded high fees about fifteen years ago, but could not open a film (The Core was a huge flop and so was Amelia; she looked ridiculous in The Black Dahlia, etc...). As recently as a few years ago she did not budge on her salary demands, which is why the work dried up.
Didn't she just get married?
[quote]I saw her in the west village three years ago with no makeup and her hair pulled back and it was not a pretty site.

Back when Vulture had the star market, they analyzed her star power. Someone said that she is basically a character actress that wound up a lead, in a couple of good films. The problem was she was going for lead roles and asking for big money, when there aren't many lead roles she's suited for.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 29, 2018 3:00 AM |
She thinks of herself as a double Oscar winner instead of a double Oscar fluke, poor thing.
This is Hillary's "acting" for you:
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 29, 2018 3:14 AM |
I think her androgynous looks have suited her well when it came to her two Oscar winning roles, but Hollywood doesn’t know what to do with her otherwise. Almost like the Luise Rainer of this generation. Two Oscars and then practically nothing. I think she probably knows she lucked out and knew it was downhill after the second one. I do like her. At least there are many opportunities in television. But I think her film days are behind her.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 29, 2018 3:17 AM |

-- Describing her as a two-time Oscar fluke rather than a two-time Oscar winner is perfect. Were they actually trying to say she was an equal to Streep until 2012? Given how they devalued them AMPAS better hurry up and give Streep #4 and #5 soon.
-- She never really had a career outside those two Oscar wins though.

You think she was really excited to do "New Year's Eve," r4, one of those Gary Marshall holiday-theme claptrap movies with about 20 stories?
Early 2000s, I guess when she was at peak fame, a friend worked at the Union Square Barnes & Noble, and Swank wanted to buy something; she didn't have her credit card with her but had the number written on a piece of paper. The store was refusing to put the purchase through, and she pitched one of those "Don't you know who I am?" fits, and I haven't liked her since. I think Hollywood has to keep their distance because they rewarded a cis white woman an Oscar for playing a trans person. I wouldn't call her wins a fluke. She deserved them. She's a good actress. It's just that the industry doesn't know what to do with her. I guess the fluke part is that there were 2 leading parts that she was suited for. She's not cute, funny or glamorous so that leaves out a lot of the parts written for women.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | September 30, 2018 2:16 AM |
She absolutely deserved both wins, more so than a number of other winners in her category in the past 15-20 years. But she was never going to be a *movie star*.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 30, 2018 2:20 AM |
I think her first win was a fluke, and without the first one there would not have been the second one. She is a seriously limited actress, not just in the type of roles she can play, but in the depth of her performances.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 30, 2018 2:22 AM |
She deserved her 1999 Oscar but certainly not her 2004 one. Imela Staunton was the only one who stood out in that category for me that year, with our four performances being kind of meh. I think Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando and Sally Field are the only double Oscar winners in history who actually deserved both of their awards.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | September 30, 2018 2:25 AM |
Her performance in Boys don't cry relies heavily on Chloe Sevigny, who was much more compelling in the film. Watch their scenes together and you will see how much of Swank's performance resonates on Sevigny. And if you don't believe me ask the two editors who worked on the film (the film had a very, very long edit).
by Anonymous | reply 131 | September 30, 2018 2:31 AM |
R129 both wins were deserved I feel but she had the critics more on her side in 2000 with several key wins before the Oscar. And she managed to overcome the American Beauty juggernaut and beat Annette Being who won the SAG. With the American Beauty momentum that year she probably didn’t beat Annette by much. The connection to Clint Eastwood helped her in 2005. Really for Swank it was just the opposite this year as in 2000. Starring in a the high profile best picture front runner and beating Bening again. It’s really interesting that Benings connection to Beatty hasn’t helped her. I still think to this day a lot of Academy members are jealous or really don’t like Beatty. He pulled out all the stops for Bening to win but to no avail.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | September 30, 2018 2:35 AM |
The Boys Don’t Cry performance didn’t ‘rely’ on Sevigny. Sevigny did just fine but she was conventional other than in the fact that she was willing to do the sex scenes. The scenes I remember didn’t even involve Sevigny, exp. “I have a sexual identity crisis..” so, shut up 131, ur dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | September 30, 2018 6:35 AM |
There'd be some issue with BOYS DON'T CRY now from our T initial community. She'd never be allowed to be cast now, let alone win.
And, no, she did not deserve her Oscars.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | September 30, 2018 6:39 AM |
Strange she'd be given two Best Actress wins by age thirty-one. Understandable in the case of Bette Davis, Meryl Streep and Sally Field too.
But Hillary Swank?
She wasn't even a highly respected actress or a big box office star. She literally was recurring on BH90210 the year before she won her first one.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | September 30, 2018 6:44 AM |
She never really had much of a career outside of her Oscars.
No critical acclaim. No big box-office hits. No memorable films.

Annette Benning was nominated for best actress both times Hilary Swank went home the winner. Annette should have won one of, if not both, those times.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | September 30, 2018 1:40 PM |
I just looked it up and the Best Actress nominees for both 2000 and 2005 were pretty weak. I can see why she won, in context. If there had been better films with better lead roles for women in 2005, I doubt she would have even been nominated. But I do think her work in Boys Don't Cry elevated the material, the story and the conversation about transgenderism.

R139 I’m not so sure about that. I’m glad Bening lost in 2000 I think her performance was overrated, but she was great in 2005. Julianne Moore was brilliant in the End Of The Affair but she had no shot at winning. And Kate Winslet was great in ESOTSM in 2005.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | September 30, 2018 2:36 PM |
r142, Winslet was completely miscast in Sunshine, awful. End of the Affair was a garbage movie. I haven't enjoyed Benning onscreen since "Endolphins" in Postcards.

[quote]PS I Love You was a modest BO hit and remains a big frau fave (though that has more to do with Gerard Butler being in it than Hillz).
That being the highlight of her post 2nd win career is a testament to how bad it is.

Gerard Butler ugh never a less appealing so called leading man in history of film.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | September 30, 2018 3:31 PM |
And horseface is too ugly for a JenAn level rom-com.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | September 30, 2018 3:34 PM |
Her teacher film - something Writers - is, no surprise, very popular with teachers. They all love it and it is a good film. As mentioned, PS I Love You, is a rom com favourite. She’s always great in the right role. Both of her Oscar wins were deserved - people take it for granted that you can just throw an actor into a boxing ring and they’ll automatically be convincing. She nailed every one of those scenes and without a doubt, you believed her to be the boxer people said her character was. She had fantastic chemistry with Eastwood. I didn’t stop crying for hours after seeing that film. I’m still tearing up just thinking about it.

"I think Hollywood has to keep their distance because they rewarded a cis white woman an Oscar for playing a trans person. In today’s SJW climate that’s a disaster, best for them to pretend it never happened. Seriously, the queen bees would be stinging mad if much ado was made today about that first win."
Yawn, some of the freepers here like to blame trans people for everything but the reality is that she is strange-looking and hard to cast.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | September 30, 2018 3:59 PM |
Most of the trans hatred on this site doesn't come from men.
I agree that she is not pretty enough to be easy to cast. But her face isn't interesting or 'different' or regal like Meryl or Glenn or Anjelica.
Just like a horsey frau. Not pretty enough for rom-coms, not forlorn enough for THE READER. Or whatever this year's Holocaust movie is.

[QUOTE] It’s really interesting that Benings connection to Beatty hasn’t helped her. I still think to this day a lot of Academy members are jealous or really don’t like Beatty
I buy that. I feel like she was hoisted on moviegoers just by that connection. Is she good? Sure. Not sure she ever was that much ahead of any other actress though in terms of talent though. As for Beatty, he’s one of those forever A listers even though he and Nicholson are senile and ugly old coots. No matter what, they get the first row at the Oscars. She benefits from that shit because she’s his + one.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | September 30, 2018 4:45 PM |
It's not too late for her to just hand an Oscar over to Meryl and say, "You deserve this more than I do."

Remember that THR roundable a few years back where she talked about this amazing, unique script she was up for and hoped to get, and then Miss Amy Adams said she was doing it? That must’ve been unbearably hard for her to remain at that table for the duration of that taping - she must’ve felt so deflated.
From their description of it, I’m pretty sure they were talking about Arrival. Amy Adams was very good in that.

What happens in Chechnya doesn't stay in Chechnya
In 2011, Hilary Swank traveled to Chechnya to attend controversial leader Ramzan Kadyrov's birthday celebration. In a strange address to the crowd, Swank lavished praise on the capital city of Grozny, and complimented the Chechen people. She also thanked Kadyrov for the invitation and said, "I hope someday, when you get your opera house built, maybe I'll have a film premiere here," according to Indiewire.
Aside from being generally bizarre, the visit was problematic for the Boys Don't Cry actress on account of the stark contrast between the strong advocacy of social issues in many of her films with Kadyrov's record of alleged civil rights violations, which Indiewire also points out: "Human Rights Watch has said they constitute crimes against humanity."
After receiving considerable backlash — which included Swank "firing her manager and most of her agents" as well as being dropped by her PR firm, according to Deadline — the Freedom Writers star issued a statement to the Associated Press (via The Hollywood Reporter) which read, "I deeply regret attending this event. If I had a full understanding of what this event was apparently intended to be, I would never have gone."
Perhaps not coincidentally, Swank saw a two-year gap in between projects around this time, having completed the huge ensemble rom-com New Year's Eve in 2011, then nothing until the TV Movie Mary and Martha in 2013. Was the break self-imposed, or did her cringeworthy Chechnya trip leave Hollywood standing at arm's length?

Like many actors who have spent a considerable amount of time in the spotlight, Swank realizes there's more to life than red carpets and million-dollar movies. She said as much while speaking to the Independent in 2014, pointing out, "None of us know what's going to happen from one moment to the next and I think that's one of the things we have to be able to do, to never take a moment for granted. Today, I'm living my bucket list. Life is short and we have to make the most of it every day. If you were told you had a year to live how much different would you live your life than maybe some of the things we take for granted or we worry about? They're so absurd in the overall scheme of things."
The Independent adds that Swank has spent a lot of the last few years "visiting and working in orphanages in India, helping to set up schools in Ethiopia and launching her own charity, called Hilaroo." According to the interview, Hilaroo unites children with animals "to help heal each other."

She's been caring for her dad
Swank's absence from the spotlight has also had to do with things beyond her own control. In 2015, the actress revealed to the Huffington Post that she had recently put her career on the back burner in order to take care of her ailing father, who had just had a lung transplant. "My dad is living with me," she said (via ABC News) of her father, Stephen Swank. "I'm his sole caretaker right now."
"It's a certain amount of time [to serve as a caretaker], but in a lifespan it's a blink of an eye," she continued. "There's been job opportunities I've passed on, and things that I said 'I can't,' but really what we're here for is our family." She went on to add that the decision to put her family first has led to zero regrets. "There is nothing I want to do more other than being with my dad in this time of need.
In February 2018, Swank told Los Angeles Confidential that her father was still living with her. "After I got over the momentary anxiety that I wasn't doing what I loved, and what that meant, I recognized that I'm so much more," she said. "It's been an incredible journey and definitely life-enriching in many ways," she also told the mag, adding, "It's a reminder about what's important in life, you know?"

R177 At least Jane did it because of her beliefs, unlike Hills who did only for $$$. I have no doubt she wouldn't even be able to locate Chechnya on a world map.
What's even crazier is that she was obviously given a prepared speech she had to deliver in front of the Chechen president at his party. I've seen the video and that part where she started talking about some Turkish firm which built all those buildings in Grozny was truly crazy.
