I think her first win was a fluke, and without the first one there would not have been the second one. She is a seriously limited actress, not just in the type of roles she can play, but in the depth of her performances.

She deserved her 1999 Oscar but certainly not her 2004 one. Imela Staunton was the only one who stood out in that category for me that year, with our four performances being kind of meh. I think Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando and Sally Field are the only double Oscar winners in history who actually deserved both of their awards.

Her performance in Boys don't cry relies heavily on Chloe Sevigny, who was much more compelling in the film. Watch their scenes together and you will see how much of Swank's performance resonates on Sevigny. And if you don't believe me ask the two editors who worked on the film (the film had a very, very long edit).

R129 both wins were deserved I feel but she had the critics more on her side in 2000 with several key wins before the Oscar. And she managed to overcome the American Beauty juggernaut and beat Annette Being who won the SAG. With the American Beauty momentum that year she probably didn’t beat Annette by much. The connection to Clint Eastwood helped her in 2005. Really for Swank it was just the opposite this year as in 2000. Starring in a the high profile best picture front runner and beating Bening again. It’s really interesting that Benings connection to Beatty hasn’t helped her. I still think to this day a lot of Academy members are jealous or really don’t like Beatty. He pulled out all the stops for Bening to win but to no avail.

The Boys Don’t Cry performance didn’t ‘rely’ on Sevigny. Sevigny did just fine but she was conventional other than in the fact that she was willing to do the sex scenes. The scenes I remember didn’t even involve Sevigny, exp. “I have a sexual identity crisis..” so, shut up 131, ur dumb.

Annette Benning was nominated for best actress both times Hilary Swank went home the winner. Annette should have won one of, if not both, those times.

If there had been better films with better lead roles for women in 2005, I doubt she would have even been nominated. But I do think her work in Boys Don't Cry elevated the material, the story and the conversation about transgenderism.

Her teacher film - something Writers - is, no surprise, very popular with teachers. They all love it and it is a good film. As mentioned, PS I Love You, is a rom com favourite. She nailed every one of those scenes and without a doubt, you believed her to be the boxer people said her character was. She had fantastic chemistry with Eastwood. In 2011, Hilary Swank traveled to Chechnya to attend controversial leader Ramzan Kadyrov's birthday celebration. In a strange address to the crowd, Swank lavished praise on the capital city of Grozny, and complimented the Chechen people. She also thanked Kadyrov for the invitation and said, "I hope someday, when you get your opera house built, maybe I'll have a film premiere here," according to Indiewire.

Aside from being generally bizarre, the visit was problematic for the Boys Don't Cry actress on account of the stark contrast between the strong advocacy of social issues in many of her films with Kadyrov's record of alleged civil rights violations, which Indiewire also points out: "Human Rights Watch has said they constitute crimes against humanity."
