Did you ever call a phone number to get the time and temperature?

Well, did you?

by Anonymousreply 28September 29, 2018 1:41 AM

Yep. TI4-1212

But that was in the 1960s.

by Anonymousreply 1September 27, 2018 11:53 PM

I did...even in the early 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 2September 27, 2018 11:55 PM

I also remember when, if you called a number that wasn't active, there would be a message with three tones, followed by a voice saying why it wasn't in service.

by Anonymousreply 3September 27, 2018 11:57 PM

The time, yes. I had five analogue clock dials around, liked them all in sync.

by Anonymousreply 4September 27, 2018 11:57 PM

Yes. I still do sometimes when I want to make a test phone call. 844-6611

by Anonymousreply 5September 27, 2018 11:57 PM

"to get the time and temperature?"

976 numbers used to get me very hot as I paid by the minute.

by Anonymousreply 6September 27, 2018 11:58 PM

Hell yea, I called time and temp all the time, back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 7September 27, 2018 11:59 PM

Yes, but it was a long time ago, so I don't have a clear memory of it.

by Anonymousreply 8September 27, 2018 11:59 PM

yes, around early 1990s, when the phone directory had about 30 pages of numbers to call for additional information like sports tickets, poison control, crisis hotline, etc.

by Anonymousreply 9September 28, 2018 12:01 AM

Is this your sly way of asking if I"m OLD, OP???? Well, as a matter of fact,,,.yes. I am. And I used to call for the weather forecast too, you little whippersnapper--not just the temperature.

by Anonymousreply 10September 28, 2018 12:04 AM

I did call it recently to see if it was still in service because I use the number whenever a store asks for my phone number.

I used it to get a CVS card, they ask for a phone number. If you forget your card, the clerk says, well tell me your phone number and I 'll look it up. One time I did tell him and there was a long list of people who'd listed the same number but I couldnt remember what fake name I'd used when I applied.

duquesne light time!

by Anonymousreply 13September 28, 2018 8:28 PM

Wasn't there a number you called to schedule a wake-up call? On your landline, naturally.

by Anonymousreply 14September 28, 2018 8:35 PM

I also used have a party line.

by Anonymousreply 15September 28, 2018 8:37 PM

Dialed with a pencil.

by Anonymousreply 16September 28, 2018 9:59 PM

Funny coincidence: Here in Santa Barbara, you'd call 6-0611 for the recorded time. One day I was renewing my subscription for [italic]Time[/italic] magazine and I noticed that [italic]Time's[/italic] ZIP code was 60611.

In San Francisco, you'd dial "POPCORN" to hear the time.

In the 1990s on Long Island there was a local phone number in Nassau County that would play music, have trivia and other "fun" activities. I wish I could remember what it was called. The number was sponsored by local businesses and acted as advertisements for them but I really enjoyed calling it as a child. Anyone have any recollection of something similar?

In NYC in the 70's there was Dial A Joke. In the late 80's early 90's the band They Might Be Giants did an homage with Dial A Song.

by Anonymousreply 20September 29, 2018 1:14 AM

In New York City you could get the correct time by dialing MERMAID.

by Anonymousreply 21September 29, 2018 1:15 AM

Years ago I called the Operator to ask the correct time and she said that they are not required to tell people what time it is. Bitch! Bad publicity for Ma Bell.

by Anonymousreply 22September 29, 2018 1:16 AM

Were you the party to whom she was speaking R22?

by Anonymousreply 23September 29, 2018 1:18 AM

476-1111 in Albany, NY, later changed to 471-1111 before it was disconnected. WRGB-TV, our CBS affiliate then started a weather line at 476-WRGB (9742).

Now I just look at my phone without having to dial anything.

by Anonymousreply 24September 29, 2018 1:20 AM

GR1-1212 time

WE1- 1212 weather

In Cleveland Ohio area

by Anonymousreply 25September 29, 2018 1:21 AM

I used to. but recently I called it again 2 times in one week because our electricity went off for 2 different days, thank you Duke Energy, and my phone wasn't charged. It gave me the correct time to reset everything. (I didn't care about the weather info because we were in the middle of the residual of the east coast storms and I knew that). 513-241-1010.

by Anonymousreply 26September 29, 2018 1:30 AM

The swimming pool at the park had a payphone and when I was a kid I would press 0 (it was free) and ask the operator what time it was. That was in the late 80s early 90s.
