Even though I had come out to all my friends and family by the time I was Shawn's age and they were all ok about, it was still very insecure about myself (particularly my sexuality) for years after. It took YEARS between the realization, finally admitting it to myself,the fear, the slowly self acceptance, building up courage to tell a friend first, my sister then my mom and then the rest of the family. The prevalent attitude remains that openly gay talent will not be able to get work nor will their career remain viable. The industry mentality is if you come out, you will lose your appeal to your audience (typically young women) and while once managers and agents used to say middle America is not ready for this, the line has changed now to [the lucrative] international markets won't accept an openly gay actor/singer etc.

Typically we see a performer establish themselves for years before coming out and usually it is because they have no choice because they are about to be outed. Shawn won't come out until he's older and I wouldn't be surprised if he forced by his people to go the bearding route soon.

Added to that, I think Shawn is only just becoming comfortable with his sexuality. I mean he flatly denied being gay when he was younger and went to prom with a girl. That suggests to me personal and family reason for his being closeted too.

We know that a lot of agents and directors discourage actors to come out, some of them are even gay themselves (in Hollywood gays in power positions are the worst enemy a lot of times). The truth is the spotlight is a very short period of time, and most actors no matter if they are straight, talented and handsome never get into a leading man position. So unless you are already making it i don't think it pays the effort of bearding and lying.

I don't think Shawn has daddy issues, rather, he is just attracted to older men. When I was Shawn's age I was strongly attracted to men who were a fair deal older than me. It had nothing to do with daddy issues as my father and I have always been close.
