Casting movies - Family members? What were they thinking???

So, I keep seeing an upcoming ad on an OTA channel for the movie "Family Business" (1989) and it has reminded me of the bizarre casting of three of the most dissimilar actors playing grandson, son, and father.

It is impossible to accept in any way that Dustin Hoffman is the son of Sean Connery. Nope. No. No way. Impossible.

And it is equally impossible to accept that Matthew Broderick is the son of Dustin Hoffman and that Hoffman is his father. No. Never. Impossible.

And it is still equally impossible that Matthew Broderick is the grandson of Sean Connery and that Connery is his grandfather. I mean, really??? Come on?

It is sooo distracting to watch the interactions between these actors (I've seen the movie before) that whatever the plot is is far overshadowed by the bizarre casting.

So, all three are famous and good actors, but WTF?

Are there any other instances you remember of the same kind of bizarre casting choices?

Rachel Griffiths as the mother of Johnny Deep's character in Blow was a bizarre casting.

I didn’t buy that in Family Business either. It was an unbelievable storyline from all angles.

Then there’s Blue Bloods. Tom Selleck as the dad, and Len Cariou as his father. Give me a break. Selleck looks every bit mid-70’s as does Grandpa by a few more. Sellecks’ character should be about 60. They always fuck it up too, when Cariou talks to Selleck about “my father.” I’m guessing because it would look/sound ridiculous to hear Selleck refer to his “grandpa,” instead.

On the other hand, there's the TV movie "The Shadow Riders" with Tom Selleck, Sam Elliott and Jeff Osterhage as brothers. If hairy men are a sign of having the same parents, this movie had it in spades. Damn the eye-candy and potential flossing... on a more serious note, elliott and Selleck as brothers actually worked.

Gene Tierney as the daughter of Eugene Pallette and Marjorie Main "Heaven Can Wait

And what about Ava Gardner as Lorne Green's in a disaster movie I can't even name?

Dora Madison as Alicia Witt's daughter on [italic]Friday Night Lights[/italic] distracted me every time they were in the same scene. It was so obvious they weren't related.

"Earthquake," R10.

by Anonymousreply 12September 27, 2018 9:24 AM

R3 lol. She really can't project any warmth or maternal instinct whatsoever. Kidman is an icebox.

Joan Plowright playing Nastassja Kinski's mom in "Revolution". Not bloody likely.

by Anonymousreply 14September 28, 2018 12:54 AM

Alexander Skarsgaard and Jesse Eisenberg are currently playing brothers in a movie.

I don’t think Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick as father and son is that hard to believe. Especially if the mother was a shiksa. Matthew is half Jewish IRL and he’s played enough Jewish characters.

Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep as mother and daughter in "Postcards From the Edge." Some critic said they couldn't pass for third cousins, much less a mother and daughter.

Same with Sally Field and Julia Roberts in "Steel Magnolias." They didn't even look distantly related.

Bette Midler and Cynthia Gibb in the tv movie "Gypsy." You're supposed to believe that Bette Midler gave birth the the WASPish Cynthia Gibb? It was unbelievable.

I’ve only seen the first episode so maybe it’s explained, but in the new Netflix show Maniac Jonah Hill is the brother of Billy Magnussen and three other very WASPy guys, and then their father is Gabriel Byrne.

One of the few times the casting people seemed to make an effort was Something to Talk About, where Julia Roberts and Kyra Sedgewick are actually believable as sisters. Also in the British gay drama Priest from 1994, there was an incest subplot where the actors really did look like father and daughter, making the scenario extremely unsettling.

The daughters (Becky & Darlene) on "Roseanne" were not physically plausible. The son, DJ, was plausible.

by Anonymousreply 20September 28, 2018 2:06 AM

Becky took after Bev and Jackie.
