Two of the most prominent rappers alive are openly gay

Just 10 years ago (maybe even 5 years ago), this would have been unthinkable. Between them, Kevin Abstract and Tyler the Creator have really revolutionized the position of gay men in hip hop culture, and thus arguably done more to make life easier for gay kids than any other celebrity.

But I'm not quite sure about the timeline. Kevin's rise to fame happened more or less concurrently with Tyler becoming more and more open about his sexuality. So did Tyler pave the way for Kevin, or vice versa?

(I realize that Frank Ocean paved the way for both of them, but he was never a rapper, just rap-adjacent, and I think that makes a big difference.)

by Anonymousreply 73April 14, 2021 11:58 PM

Tyler the Creator is not openly gay. Stop doing that.

by Anonymousreply 1September 24, 2018 7:30 PM

Hmm

by Anonymousreply 2September 25, 2018 4:35 PM

Who’s Tyler the Creator’s boyfriend? What guys has he ever dated?

by Anonymousreply 3September 25, 2018 4:36 PM

R3 Allegedly this guy. His last album is all about how much he loves him.

At least Kevin is man enough to be properly out, six years Tyler’s junior. Tyler looks a little bit pathetic refusing to say the actual words

R8 All of Tyler’s recent music is exclusively about guys and he openly lusts after them on Instagram. But for some reason he tiptoes around it in interviews.
“Next line, I'll have ’em like whoa / I've been kissing white boys since 2004”
“Shout-out to the girls that I lead on / For occasional head and always keeping my bed warm / And trying they hardest to keep my head on straight”
”And I pedal through the city with the wide frame steer / With that tall pale boy that I met last year / Grape, that's what I call him, love, that's what I fall in / Fell in, I ain't like sports growing up, but now I'm ballin' / I guess I'm a late bloomer”
”And he do what I says like Simon / No violence / And my guy mixed like jambalaya”
”Niggas mad at T, where the tall freckled white boys at? / Cause I don't fuck with niggas”
"New nigga from New York, I'ma give him sticky hands"
"Pro black but this twink white"
”He got them long lashes, couldn’t get the dirt in them, curls on his head look like waves Imma surf in them" "He kidnapped my feelings I ain't paying any ransom, I keep em' like secrets”

He also used this private shot of a guy covered in cum (probably Wyatt R4) as an ad:

Tyler the Creator has been kissing white boys since he was 15.

by Anonymousreply 11September 25, 2018 5:15 PM

Tupac was closeted

by Anonymousreply 12September 25, 2018 5:26 PM

Yeah yeah, this is the same shit that gets cited in all his threads. You leave out the part where he walked back and/or flat out renounced any connection between those lyrics and his sexuality in subsequent interviews.

This man has never come close to uttering the words “I’m gay.” He is NOT openly gay. He uses the novelty of homosexuality for clout and to shock and awe his audience, drawing attention to himself and his artwork. Targeting small, effeminate white twinks reassures his audience that his masculinity is intact no matter how much he dabbles in homosexual exploits.

by Anonymousreply 13September 25, 2018 5:37 PM

R13 Nah Tyler has said that it's the first album where he's been honest and not made up shit for lyrics - he's never renounced any connection between his lyrics and sexuality. If anything he hasn't said anything at all regarding it. But I partially agree with you, Kevin is openly gay unlike Tyler. It's sad considering Tyler is almost 30.

R11 Tupac looked gayer than both Kevin and Tyler, he must've dabbled a bit at least

by Anonymousreply 15September 25, 2018 5:48 PM

I wonder how tyler felt about being called a faggot by his idol

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 16September 25, 2018 5:51 PM

tyler's obsession with very young twinks is odd, especially considering that everything about him screams bottom. maybe he's reliving some childhood crush

by Anonymousreply 17September 25, 2018 5:53 PM

Yeah, r17, he doesn't seem like a bottom to me, let alone one who screams that fact.

by Anonymousreply 18September 25, 2018 5:55 PM

R10 His lyrics have always been pretty gay, it’s funny that it took people so long to notice

Tyler being called out in an article for not being publicly out
As we learn more about Tyler, and the breadcrumbs that he leaves for curious minds to inquire about his personal life, his determination to remain ambiguous when discussing his sexual preference indicates that rap is still extremely far from maturity in manners of personal preference. That his sexuality remains an important interview topic nearly a decade into his career means that both Tyler, and hip-hop, still have a long way to go.
Contrary to many of his rapper compadres, Tyler has never been enraptured in any dating rumors or paternal lawsuits. Subtle erotic bars aimed at men crept into his music as he blossomed into one of rap's most respected new-age musicians. In 2015, he outright tweeted that he "tried to come out of the damn closet" and no one noticed.
His latest interview continues parading his sexuality as a talking point and acts as another integral piece of the confusing narrative that he has spun. One of the most likely theories, that his music and interviews seem to support, is that he's gay, but hesitant to publicly reveal. The world's embrace is one thing, the notoriously homophobic nature of hip-hop is another.
He continuously throws bones to the public about his sexuality, then wonders why media picks them up. It doesn't read as being playful, but instead it reeks of hesitation. What will it take for Tyler to make a stand?
But it's still not enough for a rapper to openly claim it—as is evident in artists' fall-off once they come out. For now, Tyler can only flirt with the possibilities that he creates with his performance. It makes for interesting music that creates speculation without admitting to anything concrete.

why won't Tyler properly come out? He's 27

by Anonymousreply 22September 26, 2018 8:44 AM

R22 Probably personal issues, I don't think Tyler cares much about homophobia in the hiphop community unlike the article at R21 alludes to.

by Anonymousreply 23September 26, 2018 9:42 AM

Daddy issues

by Anonymousreply 24September 26, 2018 10:46 AM

He will eventually.

by Anonymousreply 25September 26, 2018 5:10 PM

r19 Because, as is seen on this thread, people don't get it at least it's spelled out to them...

From his last interview with Fantastic Man:
Tyler notices a strikingly handsome assistant in the store as we leave. “He was gorgeous,” he says, to no one in particular. “Did you see his beautiful eyes?”
During the trip to 0FR., he winds down the window, noticing another model-esque, slim blond man walking aimlessly, artfully across the street. “This is fucking crazy,” he says, wowed by the vision before him. “Look at what the fuck is going on. This is insane. This is fucking insane. Why didn’t we...? What the fuck...? Where were they yesterday? Oh, shit, this is fucking crazy. What is going on?” He asks if it’s fashion week. That’s next week. “Oh, they’re here for castings?”I ask him to explain for the tape what he’s just seen. “Nah, it’s just beautiful people. He was gorgeous, dude. Jesus Christ.”
He talks to another tall blond man at the magazine stand. “Did you see that?” he says as he leaves. “Gorgeous.”
He’s as flippantly sensual in talking about bees as he is about beautiful boys.
There is a warm reflection on his sexuality in the song ‘Garden Shed’, a subdued configuration of nature and nurture. He knew these casual revelations would generate gossip. He didn’t care. [bold]“It’s still such a grey area with people, which is cool with me. Even though I’m considered loud and out there, I’m private, which is a weird dichotomy. The juxtaposition of loud and quiet is weird.”[/bold]

I think one of the reasons he isn't being more vocal about it is because of his unrequited love with Wyatt, even like that he posted pictures of him a lot on SM and wrote songs about him, I think the moment he has a real bf he'd be more open about it.

by Anonymousreply 31November 17, 2018 9:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 32November 17, 2018 9:48 PM
He will eventually.

When he starts to fizzle, he will. Which is a shame. Gay men do this though.

by Anonymousreply 33November 17, 2018 9:48 PM

Ashamed, R31.

by Anonymousreply 34November 17, 2018 9:48 PM

R32.

by Anonymousreply 35November 17, 2018 9:48 PM

People are quibbling about either of them being gay when "Two of the most prominent rappers alive..." is in the title?

Of the two claims, one is demonstrably more absurd than the other.

by Anonymousreply 36November 17, 2018 9:51 PM

Tyler is a male Queen Latifah

by Anonymousreply 37November 17, 2018 9:55 PM

He's never been in a proper relationship or been linked to anyone (male or female) in all these years, maybe he's asexual and just obsessed with young white guys

by Anonymousreply 38November 17, 2018 10:00 PM

Oh dear ^.

by Anonymousreply 39November 17, 2018 10:01 PM

Tyler always avoids it in interviews while being open about everything else, he clearly has issues

by Anonymousreply 48November 18, 2018 7:21 PM

R48 Yeah, his issue is he is straight but loves baiting the queers

by Anonymousreply 49November 18, 2018 7:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 50November 18, 2018 7:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 51November 18, 2018 7:31 PM

R51 Anyone even remotely interested in rap or hip hop knows who these people are, not all of us worship Mariah and Lady Gaga

by Anonymousreply 52November 18, 2018 7:53 PM

R49 he’s never been linked to any woman in the 10 years he’s been in the public eye, the gay rumours have always been there though

by Anonymousreply 53November 18, 2018 7:55 PM

R53 JUST LINK TO HIM ACTUALLY SAYING HE IS A HOMOSEXUAL

by Anonymousreply 54November 18, 2018 8:03 PM

Tyler is obviously a homo, why he won't admit it is another question. I hate fucking around with closet cases especially when they're old enough to man up

by Anonymousreply 55November 18, 2018 8:03 PM

R54 People who assume people are straight by default be like..

by Anonymousreply 56November 18, 2018 8:05 PM

So, nothing about Jaden Smith outing himself? I figured that would be more of a brouhaha in the media.

Yeah, but Big Freedia is very much a niche artist, not someone with huge mainstream appeal like Kevin and Tyler.
