This is my favorite apartment. VERY Arts & Crafts. Basically the two guys who lived here in the Dakota (one of them was the Dakota board president) was running a show room out of the place. But wow. Museum quality pieces everywhere and they brought back all the original details of the apartment. And Central Park views for days.

OP but would you really want to live there?

by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 23, 2018 2:56 PM |
When I was a kid in the 70s Midwest everyone decorated in either “Early American” or “Mediterranean”. We were an early American family and slightly looked down on Mediterranean decor as being tacky. People who decorated Mediterranean style were usually smokers. Anyhow I wonder if EA will ever make a comeback. Ethan Allen was full of that look.

Not by me, R52. I love midcentury modern. That room is lovely - the room itself as well as the furniture. Except that awful striped material on the chair. I'd also add some other comfortable seating. I've loved a number of different styles throughout my life and still like some but now that I'm older I just prefer the cleaner lines of MCM - I also really appreciate the architectural beauty of the furniture.

Wright's "Fallingwater" might be a cliched choice but it is for a reason. If I had to be confined to a place for life and had a choice of where to do it in, this house would be it. The design pretty much covers every human need for space and novelty in one place. Is it Western in feeling? Is it Eastern? Does it glance towards the future? Is it a study on the earliest habits of human shelter creation? Does it reflect the limited materials dictated simplicity of East US Coast, historical design? Or does it reference the historic, Anasazi Pueblo "apartments" of The US Southwest?
The warmth and sturdiness of the natural materials, coziness of the elements of busy textiles scattered about to keep a human flow to the plan. Books, pillows and plants keep it homey. Cozy nooks and crannies are tucked away everywhere as little psychological "breaks' little shoots off the wide, open spaces in the center of the interior, with any claustrophobic anxiety reduced by well-placed windows. Walks and balconies that inspire introspection and a meditative pace surround the house.
Warm and cool colors are combined in harmony, with the exterior environment-- light, foliage, flora, weather -- determining which is dominant on any, given day. A sense of freedom is generated by the floor plan. In the great room, the expanse is horizontal and sweeping, rather than vertical and imposing. The ceilings maintain a cocoon effect. Wide ceiling lighting and windows keep things from getting too stuffy.
Lovely place and deserves its masterpiece status.

When I was a teenager (in the 70s), I bought a lavishly illustrated book of Robert Adams' Country Houses. His use of contrasting colors was a revelation for me: the colors used in interior design back then (avocado and orange, for example) were aesthetically so awful, so seeing subtle and pleasing colors used in harmony really spoke to me. Of course, my house now isn't a Georgian mansion, but I've used similar colors and contrasts, and I'm really pleased with the results.

I like OP's style. Modern and generic does nothing for me - for me personally interior design peaked around 1890. More is more, less is boring! Everything in developer cream and beige and white and oh so many shades of grey, enough already. I want colours, as many as possible, I'm with R84 - Modernism is so boring, it makes me weep. Good call Liz! The Aitken Rhett house in SC posted in R95 and R96 is pretty cool too, although I prefer my glory a bit less faded The Eleanor and Edsel Ford house, Grosse Pointe posted in R103 is damn nice too, could move right into that R125, the Georgian era had some beautiful architecture for sure, another look I like I love the maximalist look of the Tony Duquette house, LA that R117 posted Light bright and a lot weird that was posted in R161 is pretty cool too, love the busy patterned wallpaper, and I like a few weird touches, adds character. R160 is nice too, like the green. I could live with that just fine Probably my favourite though is the High Victorian look R156 posted. That is just awesome I used to own a modern apartment and totally redid the interior in that look, I miss that place!

Bill Eubanks is a friend of mine. I've known him for years. We both grew up poor as shit in Mississippi but, thankfully, went on to much bigger and better things. Me to medical school and him to design school. I know it's not for everyone but there's nothing more luxurious than an interior designed by Bill. I went to a lot of parties at his home in Memphis, TN, on Willet which was a 6,000 square foot English manor built in the 30s. He sold it a long time ago and I still miss it. It was the most stunningly exquisite space I'd ever seen. Sheer perfection.

R190 couldnt agree more - I'm so over greige, that and all the soulless drab colour schemes I see everywhere - white on white on developer cream. Gimme colours, the more the merrier, and although orange isnt my first preference, if its mixed with purples and greens and reds all good.
R192 your friend has got good taste, those interiors are damn nice. Could maybe do with more colours in some cases, but even as they are they're refreshingly different from the mainstream. Definitely a strong Victorian influence. If ever I had serious money enough to hire someone to do my place he'd be a top pick
R184 those rugs are damn nice, no two ways about it.

You can get really great cheap imitation Aubusson rugs on Wayfair pretty cheap. I refuse to spend tons on rugs that likely won’t work in my next house - and when selling, the quality is less important than the look. I’ve been impressed how much they have stepped up their game in the imitation rug business.
The challenge with Aubusson type rugs is ALWAYS getting the tone and mix of colors right. It’s so hard to determine without seeing - and returning online rugs is a pain.

Does anyone have any other tips for buying carpets online? I’m in the market for one but I’m so afraid to buy one off the internet. It’s hard to know the exact colors when you haven’t seen it in person, and I’m concerned about the quality— it doesn’t need to be the nicest rug ever, but I don’t want to get one that immediately falls apart.

It's the perfect décor for someone who misses Seattle.
by Anonymous | reply 227 | October 16, 2018 4:39 AM |
I'm not 226 but I like darker colors and less sunny rooms. When I read listings for homes that start with "SUNNY ... " I move to the next one. East facing bedroom windows are torture (for me) whereas other people search them out. I'd be happy in a bank vault.
I'd have to put curtains over the window in that pic - too bright as is!

by Anonymous | reply 232 | October 16, 2018 5:13 AM |
R228, I sort of understand what you mean. I like some rooms to be sunny and full of light, and as I keep odd hours I like my bedrooms dark. And it's not just because of the odd hours and the need to sleep during the day sometimes, some deep dark colors are incredibly restful and soothing.
Deep blues in particular are relaxing, as if you were under the sky at twilight. Which is perfect for a bedroom, but light sunny rooms are energizing and I need that at time. An entire dark living space would be depressing.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | October 17, 2018 4:00 AM |

R240 Cozy place. Cute dog. In the fifth picture, I would turn that middle star in the grouping of 3, above the white couch, upright because it looks too intentional and laborious that way (yes, I know: Groupings of 3,5,7 and don't line things up like it's a shooting range but that would look better, in this case.) Otherwise, a homey, comfy place.

Chuck, I understand what you are going for. You did it all. My two cents, even inside that style, I would suggest removing 25-33% of that decor and letting the rental breath a bit to appeal to a wider range of guests. Also, you are a man with testicles, still producing testosterone?
by Anonymous | reply 246 | October 18, 2018 4:33 PM |
R240 That's a cozy and welcoming-looking house. I can see spending Christmas there. I agree with R246 about removing 25-33% of the decor (e.g., the decorative stuff (roosters) that block the view from the windows) for a wider appeal. The bedrooms, in particular, seem fussy and not sexy. I know that sexy is not what you're going for, but the decor should also not be a sexual turn-off. The kitchen is nice.
Just my opinions.

Thanks for the comments about my house. Yes, there's too much crap in it, but the HomeAway people LOVE it. I'm actually going to stop renting it after I put the pool in next year. The bedroom above the living room will go away then, creating an open barn feeling in the LR. There will definitely be a post rental stage to the property that will be very different.

Ohmygawd, that designer of the chateau at r208. I dated him a few times in my early 20s! I am mid 50s now. He was a bit off, but mainly because I don't think he was fully out....hard to imagine looking at him now, but he was pretty butch back then. He's also 6'3" with the largest dick I've ever seen on a white man.
I always wondered what happened to him. As far as I recall he had done some acting and was a lawyer at the time. He had a swanky apartment in the East 70s, but it wasn't really flashy. Still, he seemed to have no money problems. He was a bit possessive and weird, so I wasn't planning continuing dating him, but I guess the feeling was mutual, as I never heard from him again, lol.

Simplicity. Almost sparse while pulling off an inviting comfort zone. The only thing that lights a fire under my ass to declutter and clean.
It's hard to just donate shit. Yet if you create a curb alert on craigslist (only use street location never house #) you'll be motivated if you consider cleaning curb area as a staging ground. If you have bulk of something, put out a couple of samples so the person who came for the item can contact you to buy rest of said item on Craigslist.
This is curb improvement mixed with decluttering, giveaways and chance of future sales
While I don't adore this particular image -the scene devoid of tryhard, simplistic yet has a cozy feel. It's inviting.

People like the Gutfreunds, Carroll Petrie, Brooke Astor and so on were part of New York society and represented an older generation (actually they've all passed away). They were expected to always look their best, especially when they went out. Surely there are very rich people who have beautiful homes and dress very casually at home. If you look at traveller photos of 5 star hotels on tripadvisor, most of the people are dressed casually. They can't all be middle class people splurging on a really nice hotel. Many of them must be rich.

I defended that posters advice, because the other person asking was in need of an affordable source, a la Wayfair. The Safavieh rugs offered from Walmart are a much better option. People like you are so sad, as you haven't a clue how ignorant you sound.
by Anonymous | reply 298 | November 16, 2018 5:08 PM |
When I look at living spaces like the one at R291, I think of Marie Antoinette, who regarded the luxury and formality of the French royal court as a prison and who built herself a little fake village to get the fuck away from it. Because yes, a living space like that demands formality for at least 18 hours out of 24, even if there's nobody around to impress but the staff, and who wants to spend their life impressing the staff? Or telling your children to stay out of the public rooms until they're 21?
No, a place like that is intended to impress visitors, and impress in a way that makes the visitor at least slightly uncomfortable. Which is all very well in a king's court, but that would suck in a private home that isn't very large.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | November 16, 2018 5:12 PM |
People like Brooke Astor and Carroll Petrie didn't expect (or want) you to be comfortable in their homes, they wanted you to be impressed. Your comfort was the least of their concerns.
For all her airs and graces (and a couple hundred million dollars of Vincent Astor's money) Brooke Astor was an Army brat. You don't get rich in the Army. You do get rich when you earn your money the old-fashioned way: marrying it. Three times in her case. Carroll Petrie was a "model" in NYC before she married the Marquis de Portago, the first of her four husbands and probably the poorest. She fucked her way to the top and died there, alone, at 90 a couple of years ago. To their credit, both women worked hard to give away their husband's fortunes.
And Mrs. Petrie was caftan-adjacent, so there's that...

Lovely, R313, I wish Art Nouveau had more influence on contemporary taste!
It was so nice while it lasted, but nothing about it seems to have lasted.

You can keep your granite, marble and quartz - give me VITROLITE!

Art Deco and Art Moderne are a very specific taste. Personally r321 and R324 are ugly to me - though I appreciate there is design involved, it’s not for everyone. Kinda like mid century modern.

R320 is from the movie about Cole Porter isn’t it? I love that fireplace. It’s my dream fireplace.
Love vitrolite too. That stuff seems to last forever. It’s sort of an illustration of the idea that if you do something right, you never have to do it again.

So far, R264 is the winner for me. I'm no design historian but a lot of these interiors seem very specific to a particular period or climate and not adaptable to the lifestyles of the 99%. I actually like the "Moderne" interior at R323--it reminds me of ships from the 30s-60s--but then all your other stuff would have to be of the same style and any repair or remodeling would have to be expensive custom work. Maybe it's because I've lived in Japan but I love their way with simple, easily accessible materials and how they manage space (often very little space), and that the design, though on the minimal side, is warm and human. A lot of the steel and glass "high design" looks seem very cold and corporate, and would seem even more so in the Pacific Northwest where I live. Ditto the mid century modern looks that you see everywhere here, they work better in hot climates like California and Arizona but up here all I can imagine is the heating bills for those expanses of glass and the moss growth on the siding.

I still think Wright's Falling Water is Being Best. I would just never get sick of that place and there's such a fine blending of moods and natural lines with the stylized in it, that it would always feel both fresh and cozy to me. It's also neat and interesting but not fussy and sterile, so you can really relax there. It's a place that allows you to be introspective and solitary when you want to be and it's also perfect for social gatherings.
It feels like you can both, lodge people and really tuck away from them when you wanted to on the very same days. Everyone separates into their own, little nooks then finds their way back to the center for social time.

Yes, I realized after "Fallingwater" is proper. So that's my correction. And there's this:

And of course, I love natural light so would love working in this corner:

Hmmm. Joan Rivers penthouse triplex at 1 E 62nd Street sold for full price, $28 million, and was bought by Middle Eastern royalty.

Boy, that sure is red, R335.

I like it. The White House has a red room. I guess it's a tradition among the old money crowd from generations ago.

In general, red is my least favorite wall color, most reds are too harsh and hot for interiors.
If you MUST decorate with red, use a subtle shade and not too much of it, and put in some warm neutrals to mellow things out.

That does look very good, R341.

I guess now it just evokes thoughts of poorly written fan fiction and bad acting, R336.

True. I guess it has gone out of fashion as a wall colour. If it's not done right, it can make your place look like a brothel.
Phyllis Lambert from the Bronfman family of Montreal mentioned the red walls of her family home when she was growing up. It was such a strong colour that she would dream about it in her sleep. Her father wanted his kids to have the best manners. She said the atmosphere at home was so formal that Queen Victoria would have felt ill at ease.

another mid-century modern here, ideally in a Ray Kappe home, where the light, the plant life, the wood/stone materials make it cozier

I would have not a house but a compound with different homes all decorated in various styles that my friends can live in. We'd also have a house as B&B to help make money for upkeep of compound.

This is a hotel rather than a private residence, but the spaces in the Hotel Corinthia in London are utterly, absolutely perfect. And they look as good IRL as in photos.
