The Wicker Man (1973)

Finally watched it last night - what a strange movie! I had no idea it was basically a musical film. And Christopher Lee in drag looked a lot like Cher.

Cher looks like Cher in drag, OP.

I think this movie is over praised. Great premise yes...but the execution is dire.

by Anonymousreply 2September 22, 2018 1:15 PM

I remember being really creeped out by it when i saw it on TV as a kid.

I hated all of the singing in the film but this song (lip-synced to by Britt Ekland's naked body double in the movie) is absolutely fantastic.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I agree. I just watched it for the first time tonight. I wouldn’t go as far as “dire,” but it’s alright not “the Citizen Kane of horror,” as I’ve heard it referred to.

It has a zany hijinks feel to most of it, the sly pagans tweaking the uptight mainland Christian. So the shifting of the gears at the end is awkward to say the least.

Midsommar is often called a ripoff of TWM by its detractors, but I prefer Midsommar. By a wide margin in fact.

^^^ alright not = also not

By the way it’s now on “Shudder,” to those with a sub.

R5 Was cut to hell before release.

They really burned animals alive as part of the production. Fuck them.

by Anonymousreply 9May 31, 2021 10:19 AM

So, I knew the star, Edward Woodward, from the musical, "High Spirits" (my parents had the album, it was played often). Then there was the TV show "The Equalizer". Much later I learned of this film. Wide-ranging career.

R10 Callen.

by Anonymousreply 11May 31, 2021 11:42 AM

The director said they didn't burn the animals in the wicker man. There was no reason to burn them, there's no shot in the movie that required them to be that close to the flames.

by Anonymousreply 12May 31, 2021 11:51 AM

It was Britt Ekland who said animals died in the final scene. Having just watched the movie, based on the way the animals were shot from inside the wicker man, and their wails of pain, I’m inclined to believe her.

Fun fact: Annie Ross, the only female jazz singer Billie Holiday had a good word to say about, dubbed tarty Britt Ekland.

Movie is overrated as a cult phenom.

R5 Both of Ari Aster's feature films have been tepid remakes of The Wicker Man. Midsommar was an absolute snoozefest. Pretty to look at but utterly boring. Midsommar is an ersatz version of The Wicker Man done by someone who keeps on making variations of that film. Not very good ones I might add.

Kill List was a far more effective riff on Wicker Man theme. It starts out as a British gangster film of sorts mixed in with considerable family and friendship drama. It is only at the very end that the twist really comes.

by Anonymousreply 15May 31, 2021 6:08 PM

A great twist on the British gangster genre mixed in with both the thriller and horror genres.

"An Appointment with the Wicker Man" is a musical based on the movie.

R15: British

by Anonymousreply 18May 31, 2021 6:47 PM

Also r15: Hereditary has nothing to do with TWM. Before you say that a film is an inferior American clone of a British film, you should see it.

Sorry but TWM is one of those films that’s gained an undeserved reputation as a classic film. Like “The Searchers” — it’s not as good as received wisdom says it is. TWM in particular hasn’t aged well. It feels like “Carry On Wickering” until the final sequence.

OP, IMO, he looked a lot more like Tiny Tim.

Great film—I saw it when I was around 12 years old and it left a major impression on me. Imprint Films just released a three-disc set of it on Blu-ray containing the three different cuts of the film. I ordered a copy of it last night.

Also, I think Christopher Lee (crazy hair and drag scene aside) was hot in this. I know many people find him creepy, but I've always found him terribly attractive.

Britt complained that her nude body double had a fat ass.
