International Male catalogs

A brief mention in the Cruel Intentions thread made me want to start a thread for IM here.

Who's had them?

Who's READ them?

Who WORE those little tiny specks of fabric?

Brian Buzzini was always hot in them. He's the closest any man every got to supermodel.

My uncle used to get this catalog and one of our vacation homes was near a store and he took me along when he ran in to get something. I remember they constantly had onesies for sale.

Also, I remember there was one model who ended up getting a host gig on a tv show and then committed suicide.

His photo is below.

Ahem (not that I'd've been seen in that...wear).

Oh sure. In the old days - we used to order stuff from there until we [html removed] outgrew them. It was funnier when my husband's brother would "borrow" them and order the most outlandish, sluttiest crap you've ever seen and wear it. He's straight. No gay man outside of WeHo would have been caught dead in the stuff he wore. But, he got laid like crazy.

by Anonymousreply 4September 20, 2018 9:19 PM

Sexy pirate clothes. I used to jerk off these catalogs all the time.

by Anonymousreply 5September 20, 2018 9:24 PM

i miss that catalog !!

by Anonymousreply 6September 20, 2018 10:38 PM

Kevin Sorbonne was there.

This old topic again? Can’t you think of a reasonably fresh thread topic?

by Anonymousreply 12September 21, 2018 1:16 AM

Did anyone buy a matching panty and cami set?

by Anonymousreply 13September 21, 2018 1:20 AM

My straight friend used to come over and page through the IM catalog and seemed very interested, commenting on the impressive bulges of the models.

by Anonymousreply 14September 21, 2018 1:26 AM

r12, you start

by Anonymousreply 15September 21, 2018 1:29 AM

I loved those thongs.

by Anonymousreply 16September 21, 2018 12:35 PM

The bulges were identical. They restricted their hairy models to one to three shots per issue.

I loved the sets - prefect contemporary knight in shining armor stalks fat chick in soft lighting. You could smell the anais anais.

by Anonymousreply 17September 21, 2018 12:51 PM

so much sex, and they showed pubes, which JCPenny sure the fuck didn't

by Anonymousreply 19September 21, 2018 1:55 PM

You could fill out an insert -- a prepaid postcard, to have a catalogue sent to you. Then you would be bombarded with them and seemingly could not get off their mailing list. So my friends and I started sending them in with the names and work AND home addresses of the most vile bullies and homophobes we knew.

My department chair (grad school) was rabidly antigay. Yep, he started getting them in the office. The mail people snickered and winked at him when they delivered the mail.

by Anonymousreply 20September 21, 2018 2:02 PM

I love you, R20. I did that, too.

by Anonymousreply 21September 21, 2018 2:04 PM

never knew of that, a fun trick

by Anonymousreply 22September 21, 2018 2:05 PM

R21 And they put outrageous amounts of them in each catalogue; you could ALWAYS find some!

by Anonymousreply 23September 21, 2018 2:06 PM

I bet those homophobes loved every single one

by Anonymousreply 24September 21, 2018 4:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 30October 1, 2018 2:27 AM

It was basically gay porn you could look at without being outed ....just stylish

by Anonymousreply 31October 1, 2018 2:37 AM

Kinky fun

by Anonymousreply 32October 1, 2018 2:38 AM

I bought the football shorts with lacings - I thought they looked ridiculous when I got them, but wore them at the the White Party in Palms Springs and they got me instantly laid

by Anonymousreply 33October 1, 2018 2:45 AM

All of the clothing was ridiculous. The bodies were gorgeous

by Anonymousreply 34October 1, 2018 3:58 AM

David Knight dated Jason Gould for a while. What’s he doing these days? He must’ve turned into a real silver fox.

by Anonymousreply 35October 1, 2018 3:37 PM

They bring back memories.

by Anonymousreply 36October 1, 2018 3:43 PM

Wonder if Kavanaugh ever jacked off to them? Lindsey I'm sure of.

by Anonymousreply 37October 1, 2018 3:49 PM

likely

by Anonymousreply 38October 1, 2018 6:05 PM

It was my first “erotica”

by Anonymousreply 39October 5, 2018 6:45 AM

It was erotic

by Anonymousreply 40October 5, 2018 1:12 PM

Didn't International Male start to embrace the gay in the later years (mid 90s)? I vaguely remember rainbow jewelry and shit being sold in those rags. Didn't a lot of the IM models do gay porn?

by Anonymousreply 41October 5, 2018 1:20 PM

some certainly did

by Anonymousreply 42October 5, 2018 1:56 PM

One of the postings above suggests there was a bricks-and-mortar IM store somewhere. Can anyone comment or clarify the issue.

by Anonymousreply 43October 5, 2018 2:04 PM

[quote] One of the postings above suggests there was a bricks-and-mortar IM store somewhere. Can anyone comment or clarify the issue.

I only knew of two stores. The first store was in San Diego and the other store was technically in West Hollywood, not Beverly Hills. I went in once but it wasn't very interesting. Kinda like The Sharper Image, where the stuff looked really great in a catalog but pretty ordinary sitting on a table, IM clothes without the IM models were not much fun

by Anonymousreply 47October 5, 2018 3:25 PM

I know, because I wore some of it

by Anonymousreply 48October 5, 2018 4:57 PM

Unfortunately, Buzzini was a very depressed guy for many years. He attempted suicide more than once before being successful.

by Anonymousreply 49October 5, 2018 7:07 PM

R43 There was an International Male store in West Hollywood. It shared a one-story building with one of the very first Banana Republic stores. If I'm not mistaken, it looks like the building is now occupied by the West Hollywood Animal Hospital - owing to why there are large retail display type windows on front of this hospital. This is on the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and La Peer - which is about a half block away from what used to be Studio One (the big gay disco and night club back in the day).

by Anonymousreply 50October 5, 2018 7:09 PM

If you found a copy somewhere it always had pictures that stuck together.

by Anonymousreply 51October 5, 2018 7:10 PM

I still have a pair of Australian rowing shorts from Under Gear. High cut, Poly/cotton blend with a draw string. Great for sleepwear.

There was one model (Christian?) who was in the catalogues. He was also on these fitness programs on cable in the 80s/early 90s. He may have been on the one with the hot Israeli guy.

by Anonymousreply 52October 5, 2018 7:23 PM

I bought a pair of black suede (Oxford type) shoes from IM. They were great, lasting years and years. One of my favorite pairs of shoes I ever owned.

by Anonymousreply 53October 5, 2018 8:47 PM

R47 IM had a store in Provincetown, MA. it didn't last the merchandise was cheaply made and the prices were high. There were tons of stores in PTown selling better quality products for less money.

by Anonymousreply 54October 5, 2018 9:27 PM

I had a thing for this model, Sebastian Siegel

by Anonymousreply 57October 9, 2018 4:52 PM

He didn’t bother girls

by Anonymousreply 58October 9, 2018 5:07 PM

God how I loved the look of those! i never bought a pair (or two or three) because i didn't think I was hot enough physically. The model who wore them was j/o material- so sexy!

by Anonymousreply 61October 9, 2018 5:28 PM

I prefer the early IM catalogues, when they didn't photoshop the guys, lots of VPL.

by Anonymousreply 62October 9, 2018 6:14 PM

Ah did too-ooo

by Anonymousreply 63October 11, 2018 5:49 AM

[Quote]r30 do they know why [model Spencer Garbett] killed himself?

All I read was he was 27...and shot himself in the head at a residence in Brentwood.

Not what you’d expect from a six-time STAR SEARCH winner in the 'Male Spokesperson' category. (Or, maybe it is.)

by Anonymousreply 67January 1, 2019 2:18 AM

by Anonymousreply 68January 1, 2019 2:39 AM

Omg, I used to wear all those clothes.

by Anonymousreply 69January 1, 2019 2:49 AM

I’m wearing ALL of them in 2019

by Anonymousreply 70January 1, 2019 3:30 AM

R64, Spencer was bipolar. Nicest guy and super sweet. Sort of shy. He used to flirt with me a bit but I never engaged. He was involved with a rich older man. In fact it was the older man's house that Spencer committed suicide in. Very sad.

by Anonymousreply 71January 1, 2019 4:04 AM

He probably didn’t want to be a kept man.

by Anonymousreply 72January 1, 2019 9:39 PM

Just seeing it in my mailbox gave me a boner.

by Anonymousreply 73January 1, 2019 10:33 PM

My first serious boyfriend bought me some of those tiny short shorts from IM. Unfortunately the thing that he loves most about my body-my well rounded butt and thighs-meant that I was unable to wear them. We lasted for another year after that.

by Anonymousreply 74January 2, 2019 12:04 AM

Slutty fun

by Anonymousreply 75May 8, 2019 12:51 PM

I liked to look at the catalogues but never bought anything - totally not my style.

by Anonymousreply 76May 8, 2019 1:13 PM

[quote] Unfortunately, Buzzini was a very depressed guy for many years. He attempted suicide more than once before being successful.

I think someone is confusing Brian B with Spencer.

Or did they both end their lives?

by Anonymousreply 77May 8, 2019 1:20 PM

I’m not sure

by Anonymousreply 78May 11, 2019 2:21 AM

R7 - Where did he study?

by Anonymousreply 79May 11, 2019 2:25 AM

International Male used to have a yearly inventory clearance sample sale in the SF Bay Area. What a bunch of cheap polyester and spandex junk. It was in a huge warehouse. Each item was in a small plastic bag. All the items were grouped together in large cardboard boxes.

What sounded like such a good idea, was deadly boring. There was no sizzle. There was nothing hot about it. Without the model filling them out, all those pieces looked like the cheap shit it all was. International Male was a triumph of marketing. The garments themselves were awful.

Way back in the 70s, a friend visited Los Angeles for the first time. The IM store was on Santa Monica Boulevard and had a tiny parking 'lot' with three parking spaces directly in front of the store. He was so excited about going to International Male that he parked there and locked his keys in his rental car. Then he had to suffer through having someone from the car company come to rescue him from International Male while he acted demurely as if he had no idea what was inside and had never, ever, heard of the place.

by Anonymousreply 80May 11, 2019 2:41 AM

I loved those sales

by Anonymousreply 81May 11, 2019 2:45 AM

A few years ago this man offered to pay me money to "model," a bunch of "clothes," he had. He said he would pay me $100 for each item I tried on and posed for. All I had to do was wear the clothes, pose, and that's it. No photos, no nothing.

He was a lot older than I was and really creepy. He would show up to all of our meets as well as some of our practices, which is where he approached me several times asking if I was interested. One time he brought several of the "clothing" he wanted me to model and they were all underwear items with a label that said, "Undergear," (which I now know was part of the IM catalog. The last time he asked me he said he wanted me to try on 5 or 6 items and he would pay me $600 up front.

I declined because again, he was creepy as fuck. He then asked a teammate of mine and offered him $50/item. My teammate did it and continued to do it on and off for a year. He made a lot of money off that creeper.

by Anonymousreply 82May 11, 2019 2:49 AM

30 years ago, I lost 80 lbs and went to the gym daily - bought several items - the ones I recall were the string muscle tees, some shorts and a singlet - which made my ass looked fantastic! Got laid every time I wore it.

by Anonymousreply 83May 11, 2019 2:59 AM

I should have added that this was about 5 years ago, and the clothing items were all very old, and worn.

by Anonymousreply 84May 11, 2019 3:02 AM

Good for you R83. Did you keep the weight off?

by Anonymousreply 85May 11, 2019 3:02 AM

R83 here - R85 I did as a matter of fact - continued at the gym for 20 years - a shoulder injury kind of ended it - but i am still a trim toned 140.

by Anonymousreply 86May 11, 2019 3:21 AM

Buzzini is alive. Garbett killed himself.

by Anonymousreply 87May 11, 2019 3:31 AM

Brian Bianchini was a model/actor/trainer in LA that did commit suicide. I think he and Brian Buzzini are being confused.

by Anonymousreply 88May 11, 2019 3:58 AM

Yes Bianchini killed himself. Parents wouldn't accept his being gay. His Playgirl spread was amazing.

by Anonymousreply 89May 11, 2019 4:01 AM

I jacked off to the catalogues as soon as they came in the mail. I still have a collection. Lol.

by Anonymousreply 90May 11, 2019 4:03 AM
