Elton John's cover of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is much better than the Beatles' original

Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" is an improvement on the Jackie DeShannon original.

I know everyone loves Beyonce, and I do as well, but I prefer Reba's remake of "If I were a Boy"
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 19, 2018 4:15 AM |
I didn’t realize Killing Me Softly wasn’t written by Roberta Flack. So hers isn’t the original either but I like it better than Fugees.

R6 The thing about "I Will Always Love You" is that I love both Dolly and Whitney's versions but they seem almost like two different songs to me.

"Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You" by singer Glenn Medeiros, whose 1987 cover is better than the original by George Benson

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was written by Ewan MacColl, father of the late Kirsty MacColl. Of Kirsty’s songs I like her cover of Billy Bragg’s A New England better than his original but prefer Tracey Ullman’s version of Kirsty’s They Don’t Know to the original.

This song TORN sung by Natalie game me life
"Torn" is a song written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven and Phil Thornalley in 1993. It was first recorded that year in Danish (renamed "Brændt" (Danish for "Burned")) by singer Lis Sørensen, then two years later by Cutler and Preven's American alternative rock band Ednaswap, and in 1996
"Torn" is best known as Australian pop singer Natalie Imbruglia's 1997 debut single, which peaked at number one on singles charts in Belgium, Denmark, Canada, Spain and Sweden and on Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Top 40 charts. It reached number two on the ARIA Singles Chart and the Italian, Swiss and United Kingdom charts.

Totally The Communards' "Don't Leave Me This Way". Best version of the song, period.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 19, 2018 7:07 AM |
No, R28. Just … no. That cover completely missed the point of the song, and was lifeless. Talk Talk's original stands head and shoulders above that cover.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 19, 2018 7:08 AM |
Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World" is better, although it started that annoying trend of reinterpreting 80s songs as acoustic funereal dirges.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 19, 2018 7:48 AM |
r25 My preferred version of Hallelujah is by John Cale.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 19, 2018 8:17 AM |

Pretty much every song Prince wrote was done better by someone else. Also Springsteen's "Fire" and "Because The Night" (10,000 Maniacs) and Pink Cadillac (Natalie Cole).
Bananarama's Venus was better. Helen Reddy's Heartbeat was better.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 19, 2018 11:51 AM |
I Feel Free - Belinda Carlisle
It sounds more like a woman's song than a man's.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | September 19, 2018 2:58 PM |
[quote]Springsteen's "Because The Night" (10,000 Maniacs).
Patti Smith's is the definitive version of "Because the Night."
by Anonymous | reply 85 | September 19, 2018 3:02 PM |
Sade's version puts me to sleep almost every time.
The song was meant to be more masculine, sultry & upbeat =
by Anonymous | reply 86 | September 19, 2018 3:15 PM |
ABBA's version is good but it's just not meant to be an upbeat song. The SOS meaning & lyrics should convey a dark, dangerous tune full of despair.
Portishead is the only act who seemed to understand this.
This definitive version should be in a horror film like the upcoming Halloween movie.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 19, 2018 3:22 PM |
Donna Summer's cover of "State of Independence". Erasure's cover of "S.O.S".
by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 19, 2018 3:23 PM |
Anything and everything by Bob Dylan.
I'm not going to link to YouTube because there are just too many to choose from, but just pick any Dylan song and compare his verions with literally anybody else's (well, excluding Karaoke amateurs).
Like, for example, Adele's version of Make You Feel My Love.

Some of you have the worst taste. Gwen Stefani's cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life" is better than the original? Are you insane? Little Big Town covering Elton John? Cheesy af. The Fugees are better than Roberta Flack? No. Just no.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | September 19, 2018 7:31 PM |
Blondie's "Denis" preferred over "Randy and The Rainbow's "Denise."

R101, you sound like you're an unpleasant cunt to be around. It *is* possible to have differing opinions about music without being so fucking judgemental about it.
As the thread is about music COVERS, the whole point is to laud versions of songs that are NOT the original.

Mary Chapin Carpenter's cover of Lucinda Williams' "Passionate Kisses" -- though I like Lucinda's version as well.

Betty Buckley doing Lisa Loeb's "Falling in Love."
by Anonymous | reply 116 | September 19, 2018 9:05 PM |
I'm with r101 on that particular cover and have used it as my example of taking a great song form the past and stripping it of anything that made it special or original for a bland commercial reinterpretation. Stefani's version isn't bad in and of itself. No offense - we do all have different tastes and this cover put some money in Mark Hollis's wallet (wherever he is) and hopefully exposed some younger folks to Talk Talk's catalog of amazing work.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | September 19, 2018 9:13 PM |
Orgy did a pretty decent cover version of New Order's "Blue Monday"
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 19, 2018 10:16 PM |
I like Sleeping at Last's version of "Already Gone" more than Kelly Clarkson's original, but I don't get the song. If you're that upset about breaking up with someone, don't break up with him.
"Know that I love you so. I love you enough to let you go."
Someone once played "Long, Long Time" at me while breaking up with me. If you really "think you're going to love me for a long, long time," why don't we stay together? So confusing.

If a time machine existed, one of the many things I'd try to fix is the horrible Jetsons animated film. Goodbye Tiffany. Beth Ditto would be the voice of Judy Jetson.

Hanson's version of U2's "In a Little While" is thrilling because it's such a good fit for Taylor's range and the way he pronounces vowels in a way that showcases the dynamics of what he's singing. His vowels are like music's sensory version of the umami taste.

Siouxsie Sioux did a ton of covers (the Siouxsie & The Banshees album Through The Looking Glass is covers from start to finish). Also as The Creatures (for example Mel Torme's Right Now) and solo. For me it's rather difficult to pick just one. Usueally in this type of threads, about cover versions, posters post the Siouxsie & The Banshee cover "Dear Prudence" (original by the Beatles). So I rather post something else and maybe more obscure. It's a Siouxsie & the Banshees track where they cover Velvet Underground's All Tomorrow's Parties. Siouxsie did a kick-ass cover of This Wheels On Fire on the cover album Through The Looking Glass btw.

About the song Killing Me Softly -- apparently most of you don't know that the song was a poem written by Lori Lieberman after attending a Don McLean performance of "Empty Chairs", she was so inspired by his song she wrote the basics Killing Me Softly which was later turned into a song with the help of others. While McLean is probably best known for American Pie, most of his music is quite touching.
When McLean was informed that a song was written about him he was horrified, all he could think of was the song We love you, Beatles / Oh, yes, we do / We love you, Beatles / And we'll be true. Once he actually had heard Killing Me Softly he was much relieved.
Count me as one who much prefers the Roberta Flack version over the Fugees, I just hated what they did to that song.

Though, all excellent, not sure if they transcended all the other versions, but that LP solidified his position as an amazing song stylist. It also didn't hurt that he had amazing array of musicians on that LP.

Call me crazy, but I do love Inga Humpe's cover of the Pet Shop Boys song "Do I Have To?"
[quote] Inga’s rendition doesn’t stray too far from the exquisite original, adding just a few King’s Cross-y embellishments to create a slightly poppier but no less lovely version. Pet Shop Boys were always particularly good at writing songs about the awkwardness of love (“Do I have to? / Don’t say / That I need to / Love you”) and often they were particularly suited to the female viewpoint – Inga proves to be the perfect partner for the lyrics, her dispassionate vocal sounding a bit bored, faintly exasperated and slightly nervous at the same time. I particularly like the way she chucks a plaintive spoken “blackmail!” over the same sung word – it sounds really desperate, sort of like she’s falling past your office window.

If musicals count, then the Japanese version of 'Die Schatten werden länger' (eng: 'The Shadows Grow Longer') from the 2015-16 Toho Co. run of ELISABETH. It works on levels I didn't know it had before.
I can't figure out why, but the entire book sounds somehow better to my ears when translated into Japanese. I've always appreciated ELISABETH and the play engages me, but I find the original German dull or grating in places. The libretto is fucking abysmal in English, and again as a layperson I don't know exactly why that is.
According to the wiki ELISABETH has also been translated into Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian and Italian but I've not had the pleasure (?) of hearing Death singing in these tongues yet.

For some reason I thought "Love of a Lifetime" was originally done by Scritti Politti, perhaps they did a demo version, then gave it to Chaka Khan?
The Scritti musicians are definitely her backing band on this version and Green Gartside is doing backing vocals as well as having written the song.
Whatever the origin of this song, it's fantastic, one of Chaka's best vocals.

Here is something rather obscure (so obscure not even a single clip exists on the internet).
A band called Liberty Horses did a guitar pop cover of Tom Wait's creepy Innocent When You Dream as a B-side for their singles This Town (feat. Eddie Reader) and Shine (Shine was used in the British Coming Out movie Get Real).

I much prefer Bjork's version of "It's Oh So Quiet."
80s trivia: "Our Lips Are Sealed" was co-written by Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go's) and Terry Hall (Fun Boy Three) back when they were an item. The Go-Go's recorded it first. Their version is definitive, IMHO.

Sorry, R433, but "Funtime" was written and performed by Iggy and Bowie as an ironic take on jaded excess, which they knew all about. Iggy and Bowie themselves said it was purposely sung in a deadpan menacing way. I'm not going to say anything against Boy George, but his version was a bit of a joke, maybe your cup of sugary tea, but not a better version at all.

It's more annoying having people harp about people re-posting something (especially since half the posts on this thread are just bare links) than actually having people re-post a song. Yes, this thread has been done before, but it is always interesting. And I am not OP.
Bob Dylan is one the great songwriters of all time, but some of his songs were improved or at least made famous by covers. The Byrds made "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "My Back Pages" hits; Jimi Hendrix made "All Along the Watchtower" a classic; and Peter, Paul and Mary made "Blowin' in the Wind" not better, really, but certainly more radio-friendly and so way more influential.
And I agree that Pretenders' cover of the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing" is now the definitive version.

The Fugees did a great job covering Roberta Flack on "Killing Me Softly" as mentioned above. But to say they got the better of it? Sorry, no.
The original, which is a classic and Grammy winner, isn't as well known because sometime after 1995 or so, pop and oldies radio started to delete sad songs, no matter how good, based on consumer research that branded them "tune-outs."
Happy, happy, joy, joy.

Bump for two reasons. One is that I really enjoyed reading this thread and hearing all the different covers posted. There were some fantastic ones, like Big Maybelle's "Here Comes the Sun," but then some shit ones as well. Still, overall, I really enjoyed listening to the different covers of songs.
The other reason is I thought I'd share a cover that is definitely better than the original. Though it was not recorded in studio (this was a leaked live performance), Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey's "We're Not Makin Love Anymore" is much better than Streisand's. That live high note by Mariah towards the end and the way their voices blend together so well is amazing. They should have recorded this and released it in Mariah's heyday. It would have been a #1 hit for sure.
