The interesting and funny thing about the "Falcon Men" is that in its heyday, Falcon was more the look of Steven Scarborough and then John Rutherford than it was Chuck Holmes. The influence of these three is evident: Holmes' predilection was the buff boy wearing Calvin Klein underwear; Scarborough was the overly-muscled focus on ass (leaving for his own gig at Hot House), and Rutherford gave us big, hairier men (ultimately buying Colt). And then there is the mess that is Chi Chi LaRue, who pretty much destroyed the gay porn industry as it existed in the early 90s. Well, I can't put all of the blame on that bitch because she had help, but if you wonder why porn today is so bad, it can be traced back to the succession of two men: Larry (condom nazi of the early 90s) and to a lesser extent, Chris Ward (finished the job in the late 90s through the Aughts).

I wish that the film ([italic]Seed Money[/italic]) about Holmes was better because he was a pioneer and icon in the gay community, but by the time he became fodder for a serious biography the rights and story were controlled by Ward's clique that had little interest in telling the real story, warts and all. And, of course, Falcon ultimately went belly up due to Ward's mismanagement as porn went online. It's all now owned by a straight company (AEBN) and continues to pump out mediocre movies, never to regain that glory.

The good news is that AEBN finally shed Ward a few years ago after he managed to run Falcon into the ground, turning what were essentially money making machines into has-beens. The people who own and run AEBN don't give a shit about Holmes' story, so maybe a filmmaker of higher calibre and talent will take an interest in Holmes' unique life and business, but I'm not holding my breath. Movies about the porn industry don't do well generally; there's the exception of [italic]Boogie Nights[/italic], but no one rushes to give awards to movies about gay porn.

Interesting, r9. Steven Scarborough was the director mostly back when I was a Falcon consumer. Falcon was considered the primo porn company then. Because the VHS movies were expensive (especially if it was a "special" event like an Aspen sequel), a friend and I would split the cost of a movie, then make a copy and toss a coin to see who got the original. Al Parker was one of my favorites, from the original Other Side of Aspen; he shouldn't have been making movies when he did "Overload." Later on, no one really stands out...I liked Zak Spears a lot at one point. But he wasn't strictly a Falcon guy.

Looking back, the thing I didn't like about Falcon was how strictly delineated the sex roles were; you could tell by the box cover who was going to top and who was going to bottom. Say what you will about today's gay porn, but that most guys are versatile is an improvement to me.

John Rutherford...not much there; really boring stuff. Man could not direct a group scene to save himself. Actually, most directors couldn't/can't, including the hack Chi Chi Larue. Colton Ford was crazy popular and didn't make that many movies, really.
