Joan Holloway Harris and her body
Many posters on the Mad Men, Reconsidered thread appear to think that Joan is literally the size of a small suburb.
Others disagree.
Since the rest of us on that thread would like to not have the next 200 posts be all about this bitch's cellulite, please feel free to chat about it HERE.

Joan was fat. She looked and moved like a ship in full sail. Hardly anyone but old ladies were that heavy in the 1960s, and if they were, people would have considered it remarkable. There's a big difference between the Sophia Loren, Jayne Mansfield, etc. va-va-voom type and a straight-up giantess. Christina Hendricks was still gorgeous, but she was enormous.

I have a feeling this thread will end up being the next one written about somewhere online......

She started off on the show as curvaceous but as the show went on she was veering towards hefty.

I wouldn't say shen she was fat. Some people are just build BIG. Many people of European descent have a large build.
If Joan were a man, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

She made it very obvious by getting huge tits r5, so she knew people would talk about it.

Buxom and curvy (which is not a bad thing.) Then became kinda fat.

I don't fuck women but I liked looking at her body. I found it very visually appealing.

There's already an extensive thread on this.

R9 No, there ISN'T an extensive thread on this, you idiot.
There's an extensive thread on Mad Men that was taken over by manorexic obsessives.

What's amazing to me is that Christina Hendricks is barely passably pretty at best, but on Mad Men she was borderline gorgeous. The costumer, hairstylist, and makeup artist who worked on her deserve a special Emmy for that.

Started out a skinny model. Got new breasts for her burgeoning acting career. Gained weight and didn't know what the hell they would look like when she took the unneeded implants out. Found the right role to make it work..
I applaud the costume designer and costume crew who found the best shapes and patterns to suit her odd body. Her foundation garments are masterpieces in engineering.

Apparently there's at least one guy who can't get over the fact that a fat woman can pull straight dick, and he can't.
If ever there was a time to say "Shut up and deal"...

The same is true of January Jones, who has a nice bikini bod but a fairly ordinary face, at least when she's not being photographed for "Mad Men". They made her beautiful!

Straight men love the look of the curves.

Comparisons were being made to Delta Burke. The difference is Delta started losing her sex appeal (it didn't help that she was horribly dressed) but Joan never did. People who agree are winning this poll (handily,) so give it a rest manorexics.

Christina Hendricks confirmed her phone was hacked when several private photos of her were included in the fappening. Her BMI may be higher then current standards say is permissible, but she wears it reasonably well.

I remember that pic. My straight friends thought it was hot as hell. Sexy/kittenish. They also loved her on MAD MEN.

Christina Hendricks reminded me of the beautiful actress, Francesca Annis, who played Lillie Langtry "Lillie" on PBS in the late seventies. The same opulent curves. But in playing Joan in the age of Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, she did get heavy. She was at optimum weight in the 1969 and 1970 episodes of "Mad Men."

I saw one of the early episodes recently and she was smaller when the show started

The weight also made a great comment on the character of Joan. In the 1950s, her curves made her a bombshell. As the 1960s went on and thin became in, she looked more and more like a relic in the office, as outdated as a big stiff hairdo. Because of that, Joan couldn't depend on her body any more.
Compare her to the hippie-ish secretary in 1970.

It was "don't waste your youth on age," R24, and it was said to her by Bert Cooper.

I’m in the minority but I find her repulsive. She’s got a horribly fat dumpy body and hideous hair and teeth. Her fake refined voice used to make my ears hurt. She’s one of the reasons I stopped watching mad men.
Peggy was no looker either, but at least she wasn’t the size of a barn.
