They are flamboyant as all get out, but can't be out as it is looked down upon by the snooty, horsey set.

I used to ride in a hunt club when I had horses. The social aspect of it was always nice and there’s nothing like a good hunt breakfast. It was a bunch of older locals that grew up riding and that rougher group is aging out of it in my area. The newer riders are transplants that are more interested in playing Downton Abbey than actually riding. They still have a pretty active set down in Pinehurst but keeping the horses just got to be too much work as life and work progressed.
I never got the idea that there were many other gays doing it, though the men that are into hunter-jumpers seemed to be a bit more swish than Western riders.

Riders and polo players are generally not very good looking. Too rich and inbred. Working or middle class baseball players, wrestlers and curlers are hotter.

Curlers?

Didn't you find them cute? Their pants too.

I grew up spending my summers at a club in the Adirondacks. There was an annual Horse Show in the town. Several of the equestrian riders stayed at the club. I can remember getting all warm and tingly seeing a good-looking man in his tight riding breeches and knee-high boots.

Women are said to be sexually turned on by horses. How about gay men?

KNow a couple of Irish lads who are gay and good horsemen. Good lithe bodies, salt of the earth lads, the kind you could bring home to Mammy!

Grew up in the mid Atlantic in a well connected horse family. Many cousins competed in hunter events and a few were in dressage. As a gay teen, almost all the male riders seemed gay to me. Probably not the case. There were a lot of whispers of AIDS deaths in the 80s and 90s among riders and trainers. I should interview my aunt who is in her mid 80s to get the scoop.
Remembering that English riding is a past time of the super wealthy is essential. As the poor kid, every boarding school guy seemed to act gay to me. Sort of like James Spader in the movies from the 1980s. Most weren’t gay. Just really wealthy. Some of these people also had long careers. Competing into your 50s or 60s wasn’t unheard of.
Here is a fun fact - the major equestrian event held every 4 years is going on in North Carolina now. It seems to be a cluster fuck of epic proportions.
