Roseanne’s BFF Norm McDonald Gets Cancelled From The Tonight Show Due To Comments
History repeated itself tonight, as an NBC late-night program abruptly booted comedian Norm Macdonald from a high-profile gig. This time, it wasn’t Saturday Night Live and Weekend Update, though, but The Tonight Show, which announced just a few minutes ago that it was killing Macdonald’s planned appearance on tonight’s episode, in the wake of a controversial interview with the veteran stand-up that ran in The Hollywood Reporter today.
As previously reported, Macdonald’s interview managed to fall on the “predictable but disappointing” side of a shocking number of pop-culture issues, from his hearsay objections to Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette, to his support for old friends like Louis CK and Roseanne Barr, to his belief that Chris Hardwick was a hapless victim of the #MeToo movement. And while Macdonald has now issued an apology for “minimizing the pain” of the people hurt by CK and Barr’s actions, it doesn’t appear to have been enough to stop The Tonight Show producers from wanting to distance themselves from his comments and the anger surrounding them.
“Out of sensitivity to our audience and in light of Norm Macdonald’s comments in the press today, The Tonight Show has decided to cancel his appearance on Tuesday’s telecast,” the show said in a statement tonight. (They’ll be extending a Matthew McConaughey interview in the Macdonald segment’s place.)
As it happens, Macdonald touched on Tonight host Jimmy Fallon during the interview, defending him from accusations of “humanizing” Donald Trump during the run-up to the 2016 election.
Meanwhile, Macdonald’s new Netflix series, Norm Macdonald Has A Show, debuts on September 14.

Today in frustrating missteps that will make you wish that a famous person you like had just shut their mouth and not said anything: Norm Macdonald has offered some thoughts on Louis CK, Roseanne Barr, Chris Hardwick, and the #MeToo movement in general, and all of his takes are just real bad. This is all from an interview Macdonald gave to The Hollywood Reporter, and it even starts off on a sour note with THR reminding Macdonald that he warned people about how bad a Trump presidency would be back in 2015. The interviewer asked him if he thought it Trump has been as bad as he thought he’d be, to which Macdonald responded, “Not at all.”
Macdonald explains that the Constitution is strong enough to withstand anything Trump might do, “except, you know, the Supreme Court judge nomination,” but even the “emboldening of racism”—as THR puts it—hasn’t really bothered him. Macdonald explains that he lives in L.A., so he’s usually confronted with “the lunacy of the left” and that he never accepted the idea that “everybody is racist.” He recognizes that “everyone is a fucking idiot,” but he assumes that will pass at some point, even if he doesn’t necessarily want society to swing back in a more liberal direction.

It's like they're trying to keep their parent's memory alive by emulating their dead aprent's personalty.

Don't know in the particular case of Norm McDonald, but a lot of rather smart people fall into a deep hole of depression when a loved one dies and in that vulnerable state they are easy prey for snake oil salesmen like cults, religion, alt-right / extremist groups, etc. And from that state of depression they are re-build, re-shaped, brainwashed and become a completely different person with a totally different mindset.

Norm Macdonald said “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon told him that his senior producers were crying about the possibility of having Macdonald on the show after his #MeToo comments.
Fallon himself was “very broken up” about the debate about whether to have him on the show, Macdonald told SiriusXM radio host Howard Stern.
“Jimmy [Fallon] came back in … and said, ‘Can I talk to you, buddy?’ … He was very broken up about it,” Macdonald told Stern Wednesday.
“‘People are crying,'” Fallon said, according to Macdonald.
“I said, ‘people are crying?’ ‘Yeah,’ he said, ‘my senior producers are crying,'” Macdonald told Stern. “I was like, ‘good lord,’ I go, ‘Well, bring them in and let me talk to them. I don’t want to make people cry. I didn’t even know I had the capacity to make people cry.”

The first show — each is a little more than half an hour — features David Spade and, as a side note, it might be the best and funniest Spade talk show appearance in recent memory. Spade is focused, on his game, and tells a few choice stories that are honest and funny and even enlightening. But mostly what he does is note that the show seems beyond low-rent (which is intentional) but poorly executed and ill conceived, which it is. Spade notices that the host is not listening and cutting him off on several occasions. Eventually he shifts from making light of it to saying, at one point, "Give them a fucking second to laugh," referring to the collection of people who are not really an audience per se but are there in the dark corners of the broom closet where the show is filmed.
Spade knows Macdonald, he gets Macdonald. But it's interesting to note that several times Spade's face gives way to a look of concern that, yes, this really is an omnishambles situation with no real exit. Macdonald seems barely coherent at times: forgetful, directionless, uninterested and distracted. It gets so bad that Spade says, in all sincerity, "Is this going to go down as a test show?" He repeats the funny and accurate "test show" remark again, seemingly sincerely worried.

McDonald was AWFUL on The View. They were really soft on him, and he still gave weird, slurred, nonsensical answers.
His apology for saying “Down Syndrome” was ridiculous, and not an apology at all. He said it came out of his mouth because he was trying so hard to avoid “the other word we’re not supposed to say” (retarded). It was an EXCUSE, not an apology.
The whole interview was a bust, and just made him seem to be out of it. His explanation for defending Roseanne and Louis CK made sense ONLY if you read about the interview and aftermath that got him in trouble beforehand.
There are so many comedians out there who deserve more work and their own tv show, yet this guy is getting his own Netflix show? Pathetic.

R99/R104/R113 it also didn't turn Jimmy or Seth.
I think the guys mentioned at R99 were different because they were from an older generation. Also, I think after SNL hired Tina Fey they stopped hiring so many a-hole type male comedians. SNL went from Norm who refused to work with a female on WU to guys like Seth Meyers and Kyle Mooney.

r128 that's it. As soon as I saw a pic of him in the casino, I knew he was fucked.
He's funny when he's not fucked up. Normally, he's excellent as a talk guest.

[quote] from In a just world, he'd be no more than what he really is, the annoying nasal-sounding Irish drunk in a bar who won't shut up.
Norm Macdonald is of Scottish ancestry, not Irish.

[quote]He continued, “There’s a word we used to use to mean stupid I was about to say that word, and then I stopped and thought about what’s the right word to say. I realized at that moment I did something unforgivable.”
So he was going to say “retarded” and decided “Down Syndrome” is far less offensive! There is a word we use to mean stupid, all right NORM.

I don't care what you all say, his Netflix show is really entertaining.
He's what people used call "an acquired taste."

[quote] Some of what he said is inarfully stated. Who cares? I find the fact that his Tonight Show spot was cancelled to be kinda scary.
Why? Why is it scary? No one is owed a Tonight Show spot or a Netflix show or a fucking Supreme Court seat, for that matter. These aren’t meritocracies; they’re entirely capricious. So why should I be “scared” when another 60 year old man is denied something that 99.99% of the public can never imagine for themselves?
