by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 8, 2018 9:57 PM |
I think that Lady Gaga will finally Oscar for this film. Hollywood owes it to her. It is her time and she shan’t be denied. At long last.

Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone reviews were raving. I am still shocked as I thought this would be straight to DVD and Razzies when it was announced.
But I’m psyched to see it now - loved Bab’s version and this one is getting much better reviews. And music sounds fantastic.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 8, 2018 10:13 PM |
This could be the movie that the Academy has been praying for. They've been accused of being out of touch for celebrating movies that few people see ("Moonlight"). They are so desperate about this that they even floated a new award category to award movies that the masses love (Best Popular Movie).
But if this movie does decent or great business, they could shower it with nominations and appear to be back in touch with the audience, the little people. Basically they would be awarding a retread romantic soap opera, but they are being giving cover to do this by the raves from respected entertainment magazines.
So they honor "A Star is Born" and "Black Panther" as the bone they throw to us flyovers. The Academy members get alleged relevance and bigger ratings at awards time in return.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 8, 2018 10:17 PM |
R16 so Gaga has become so dull now, she's flyover bait?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 8, 2018 10:18 PM |

So how is the fourth remake, with aging, unattractive stars. The songs seem unremakeable, Gaga's voice is decent but she's no Whitney. The storyline is dark and depressing. But this is supposed to be working people up into a frenzy??

[quote]This could be the movie that the Academy has been praying for.
Reason #1 why this is getting such a huge, showy push. That’s not a reflection on its quality, merely that it looks to be a big, traditional tearjerker/crowd pleaser that is NOT a comic book property.

From Gaga's Vogue profile. Sean Penn is a fan
[quote]As Sean Penn said, after seeing the film more than once, “It’s the best, most important commercial film I’ve seen in so many years,” and he described the stars as “miracles.”

Beatty, Redford, Affleck, Gibson, Costner, Eastwood, and now Cooper is sure to win for ASIB.

The movie has added relevance now with the Mac Miller overdose and his love affair with Ariana Grande. Sadly, that relevance is going to help the box-office and during awards season.

NY Post Raves:
Lady Gaga gives Oscar-worthy performance in 'A Star is Born'
Lady Gaga has traveled by egg, donned skirt steakand taken part in a TV blood orgy. But her biggest transformation occurs in the new film “A Star Is Born.” In it, she becomes an Oscar-worthy actress.
Taking on the classic part of a talented unknown who rises to music superstardom — the iconic role that Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand played before her — Gaga proves her acting chops by trading in flash for humanity.
You won’t believe she’s the same person who once sang the lyric “I wanna take a ride on your disco stick.” And you will be downright shocked that this electrifying film is the third remake of “A Star Is Born.”
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 26, 2018 6:47 AM |
R42 because this movie is centered around songs by someone whose voice is off putting (to my ears). I actually thought the trailer looked decent, but I don't think I could sit through it for this reason.

I am watching the 1976 version while reading this thread and thinking about Vincent Canby’s review, just pudding myself laughing! Can’t wait until DL-ers finally see this - the confrontations will be EPIC!
Kris Kristofferson is just SEX ON LEGS in this movie and is so much fun as John Norman Howard always telling his audiences to fuck off - he’s so beautiful, when Streisand puts makeup on him in the bathtub (a scene Gaga and Cooper replicate in their version) he just gets prettier. He’s a lot of fun!
Plus there’s an early appearance from DL fave Susan Richardson as a groupie!

Count me as one who thought Gaga couldn't act before, but the clips from this have changed my mind. The part may be tailor-made for her, Bradley Cooper may be her perfect director, but even in the "Shallow" video she shows acting chops.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 30, 2018 1:48 AM |
She sounds great though her voice has degraded in the last 5 years - she's not lost her power or range, just some clarity of sound. Like Whitney in 1994. Still the greatest.
I'm not convinced I want to watch Gaga on the big screen for 2 hours, but Cooper sounds just right too and the rave reviews can't be all wrong. To dare an original musical and have the music sound this good bodes well for everything and everyone. This is going to be her Bodyguard. A smash success across all media.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 30, 2018 2:00 AM |
and If she doesn't win for Best Actress, she's at least a shoo-in for Best Song, right?
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 30, 2018 2:04 AM |
Expect over-hype with anything Gaga is involved in. It happens every time. She's ok at remanufacturing what someone else has already done, just not great at it. And she's not quite able to just do something new, and not "influenced" by. I expect it to fizzle out quick just as her last 2-3 albums, she's just not able to live up to the hype she and her people create.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 30, 2018 2:07 AM |
Her pr flunkies have been working DL like crazy the last few weeks R77. Expect them to disappear when this turkey actually opens in theaters and tanks.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 30, 2018 2:17 AM |
It's not going to be a turkey, no matter how old fashioned it is. It's going to win awards and sell some tickets. The story is hokey and Gaga is ugly and Brad is no longer sexy. It should have examined the ugliness of selling out talent for the grindhouse of pop stardom, but that's too close to home for all involved. Still, it's a great effort thrown at a kind of anachronism.
The people posting against here are old men who love Judy and Barbra. That's not why the movie will fail. Blech. It's just too corny of a story. Streisand's version was a famous abomination. I never saw it. She was top film star and record seller when it was made. Everyone hated the movie because she's stupid and not a rock star and no thanks Barbra on your left profile and home fashions. This version is getting raves for its stars and moviemaking. Gaga and Cooper, Shangela and Willam, Chappelle. Some great new music that is raw and seismic from Gaga and some singing from Cooper that proves legit. It's going to be a box office hit - for a musical. Huge soundtrack sales and Oscars for directing and song, maybe even for Actor and Actress. I don't like Gaga but...at least she drops trying to prove that she is one of the great diva voices. She's more a bar singer and manufactured pop star, both of which she gets to portray in ASIB.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 30, 2018 2:43 AM |
R76 I've posted before, but I think there are two really good songs from Black Panther than can and should win. She doesn't deserve an Oscar just because she made a musical.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | October 1, 2018 9:26 AM |
The sheer number of good reviews this (and Gaga) have gotten from mainstream reviewers makes me want to see it. That and the fact Cooper and Gaga have crazy undeniable chemistry both in the trailer and the "Shallow" video.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | October 3, 2018 5:20 AM |
It's also a great song. And I heard another song (forgot the title) that's even better.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | October 3, 2018 5:29 AM |
So if Cooper has so much chemistry with her, is he straight?
by Anonymous | reply 87 | October 3, 2018 6:06 AM |
Kind of asinine R87. Cooper has had many female co stars already. He's a decent actor. His chemistry with Gaga should be fine. Cooper is not someone who doesn't seem straight in his roles - whatever that means. He could play gay successfully and maybe one day he will. Do you realize the stereotypes you're walking on?
Ok, if it means Jake Gyllenhaal. He doesn't seem straight, but he won't be gay. He's just a big soulful guy who happens to be hunky cute. Cooper looks more and more like Barry Manilow everyday which must be confusing you R87. Manilow was straight until he married a man a few years ago. Suzanne Somers was there!
I find that guys that go on about actors being gay are usually angry and ugly. Tom Cruise is straight and I'm not kidding. Keep your projections to yourself. Bradley is maybe gay. I fucked Brad Pitt a few times but he's not mostly gay. Life is interesting.
The Sure Jan meme is from what year of mass communication. 2013? When did that old gay at Datalounge discover it?

The question is, can real chemistry like that be faked? Is it just great acting?
by Anonymous | reply 92 | October 3, 2018 7:04 AM |
Why r you so stupid to believe what you've read here about a celebrity sexuality?
A great actor can portray anything. I'm not sure that's called faked. Go see for yourself and stop believing what you read on the internet. Fuck, you're dumb R92. Raise the standards for yourself at least.

This is not an original musical. It's been done a few times before this version. I doubt this will be Gaga's Bodyguard, since I doubt there will be any songs hitting the top of the charts.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | October 3, 2018 8:06 AM |

R67, I have turned down any offer to be in this new incarnation. It dredges up horrible memories of when Barbra Streisand had my part cut and thwarted my chances of winning Best Supporting Actress. I wish them well, but the pain is too great. Streisand and Spielberg once again have defeated my young vibrant spirit. And sobriquet is “TV’s Sweetheart”, dears.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | October 4, 2018 3:06 AM |
I saw it last night at a free preview on a college campus. It was good, not great. Gaga, Cooper, and the rest of the cast (even Andrew Dice Clay!) were excellent. It will be a big hit. It was shown in a 500-seat theater and people were turned away. There were lines around the block.

Does Gaga die at the end jumping from a tower? I love Edge of Glory. How does she kill herself, is it because she's ugly or a drug addict? ASIB is Judy Garland's life story my mom told me. Why would Streisand even try to star in that back in the day?

Then they make it look very seventies, just judging from the trailer.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | October 5, 2018 12:30 PM |
R99 I doubt it was Judy Garland's life story. Her version of ASIB was a remake of an older movie (no music) with Janet Gaynor in the lead. I don't think they knew Judy's story in Hollywood back then. I believe it was sometime in the 30s. A lot of people are saying this is the third version when it is actually the fourth.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | October 5, 2018 2:13 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 107 | October 5, 2018 3:20 PM |
I bought my tix for tonight earlier this week. I've been listening to the soundtrack at work. I like it, but I don't think it has a hit as YUGE as Evergreen. Also, I was annoyed that I had to wait until today to listen to it. Didn't soundtracks used to come out well before a movie premiered?
by Anonymous | reply 108 | October 5, 2018 3:26 PM |
The story goes back to "What Price Hollywood" so this is actually the fifth remake of this worn-out tale. Supposedly, the original story was based on a true event, about an actor who killed himself because he could no longer get roles while his wife was becoming more successful. I suspect this movie will do well first weekend, then drop off because Gaga isn't that popular with mainstream audiences. And Bradley Cooper is just...meh for most people. The audience for it is likely limited (and no, a free screening at a college campus is no indicator of anything. Charge movie-ticket prices and see how long those lines are).
by Anonymous | reply 109 | October 5, 2018 3:55 PM |
I saw it last night and kinda loved it. Wasn't expecting to, but it's definitely the best version since the Garland one. Not that that's high praise, but still, it was pretty terrific. Gaga surprised me and Cooper was excellent. It's probably the best I've ever seen him. I think Oscar noms are most likely.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | October 5, 2018 3:59 PM |
I saw it last night and thought it was fantastic. Gaga was great, esp. in the second half, but the movie would not work without Cooper's amazing performance. He has the harder role and makes a troubled character very likeable and charming, something Kristoffersen really failed to do, IMHO. And his drunk/drugged scenes were flawless. There is a Grammys scene that could have come off as laughable but he played it so well that it was heartbreaking. Reminded me of Nicolas Cage's great work in Leaving Las Vegas. The movie as a whole actually reminded me of LLV alot.
I knew what happened to his character at the end of the movie but was still gutted by it, esp. the way it was shot- I found it hard to watch. And everyone in the theater was crying during her last song and we all just sat there crying during credits. Granted, it was a very female crowd.
It was shot in a really cool way and felt fresh - similar to Black Swan (same cinematographer). Movie was long but didn't feel that way.
My complaints: My fave song on the soundtrack, Is that Alright?, was only in the credits. And his final "descent", seemed too quick for me. I actually would have sat and watched it for another 30 minutes- was kind of shocked when I realized the ending was upon us. I also didn't need Gaga to go so commercial and pop. i think it actually would have been more painful if she'd stayed with more authentic and if they just grew apart because of the different career trajectories and his addictions.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | October 5, 2018 4:01 PM |

Man, Gaga is tearing up the charts. She has three songs in the top 10 on itunes. A fourth in the top 20. Bradley has one in the top 20 too.
Soundtrack will be bigly huuge.

I'm so glad Beyoncé didn't do this. It would have been laughable with her in the role.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | October 5, 2018 5:15 PM |
No, they don't both die. I loved it. Best since the Judy Garland version. The soundtrack was phenomenal and I didn't know Cooper had such a great voice. I think he might be a case of Hollywood not knowing what to do with him, because I've never seen him be this brilliant before. He really is Oscar brilliant and I hope he's recognized this year and this leads to equally great work from him. Go figure that he'd have to co-write and direct the first film to really show off what he has to offer. Gaga is terrific, but I feel like we need to see her give an equally good performance before we can say she's a brilliant actress. This might have just been the right role at the right time and she might have hit close to home for her. I feel like, if ideally cast, anyone can be as good as Gaga is in this film.
Don't get me wrong - it's a wonderful performance, but I'm curious to see if she has a few other performances like that in her.

She'll win the Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | October 5, 2018 5:28 PM |
I think she will too. It was a transcendent performance. And the soundtrack is so good. It's like Adele. Everyone's going to love the ballads. From gays to fraus and everyone in between.
But, as others have said, Cooper is the real standout. Wow was he good. And I've never thought twice about him.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | October 5, 2018 5:36 PM |
I'm still thinking about the movie. It's one that really stuck with me.
The first 15 minutes are pretty much perfect filmmaking. Cooper's singing and guitar playing were stunning. Cooper's face when he first sees Gaga sing blew me away - you could palpably feel him falling in love with her. The parking lot scenes were intimate, unique and believable and the Shallow moment gave me goosebumps, even though I'd seen the trailer everywhere.
He should not lose Best Actor to Christian Bale in full makeup doing an impression of one of the worst Americans in modern history.

I just saw it. Overwrought. The last half loses the charm of the first. Gaga is good but, at the end, obviously edited carefully. She isn't really given much heavy lifting to do so I'm confused about the races for her oerfurmance; anyone can stare. Unlike previous versions, this is more about him than her. The only good thing I can really say about it is that it's much, much better than that shitty Streisand version.

That's awful, especially when you consider the amount of promo and hype they've done for this movie. It's probably the most hyped movie I've ever seen. For comparison, Streisand's "The Mirror Has Two Faces" opened with $32 million in 1996, and it had bad reviews and a fraction of ASIB's promo. In today's dollars, Mirror would have beaten ASIB.
Also, Streisand's version of ASIB did much better at the box-office than this version will do, and Barbra's soundtrack will outsell Gaga's 10 to 1.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | October 6, 2018 12:37 AM |

“Most hyped”? Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and The Last Jedi were FAR more hyped than ASIB could ever’ve dreamed of being and that was in just the last year. If you’re gonna troll, at least *try* o bitter Barbra queen.

Gaga gave a Madonna-level performance. To be fair, the screenplay is so awful that it does none of the actors any favors (apparently Cooper is a huge star who has exactly one support person in his life, and falls magically for Gaga because...well, why?)
Cooper is fine (but he watched Kris Kristofferson, clearly). Gaga, though it's an honest performance, has no subtext, and no inner character there. She is a collection of scenes but no justification for why she's behaving this way.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | October 6, 2018 1:50 AM |

I'm no fan of Cooper. I turned off "Silver Linings Playbook" because I don't ever recall instantly hating every character in a cast as I did with that film. I couldn't stand it longer than 45 minutes.
Still, maybe he'll elicit a different reaction in me in ASIB.
I find Lady GaGa cute as a button, and that's all there is to it. Sue me.

I haven't seen the movie, but I just listened to the soundtrack, and I was underwhelmed. The songs are not catchy at all. Lots of ballads, but they all sound the same. I was especially struck at how much Gaga's voice has declined since the Born This Way album. She sounds like a pack a day smoker now. It still has power, but it's raspy and strained. There's none of the gorgeous purity and range that Streisand had on her soundtrack.
I'm guessing the short dialogue tracks on the album are not a good representation of her acting in the film, because I was not impressed.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | October 6, 2018 3:26 AM |
[quote]I'm not a Gaga fan, but Madonna level? Madonna sucks as an actress and director.
"Madonna level"? I was thinking the same thing. Was the poster saying Gaga's acting was as bad as Madonna's?
Even if Gaga was bad, she's still better than Madonna. She was good on AHS. Madonna super sucks as an actress, she can't act for shit. The best acting coach in the world won't help her, she brings new meaning to the word 'wooden acting'.
Plus Gaga can actually SING! So there's that!
by Anonymous | reply 166 | October 6, 2018 3:30 AM |
[quote]She isn't really given much heavy lifting to do so I'm confused about the races for her oerfurmance; anyone can stare. Unlike previous versions, this is more about him than her.
I read an excerpt from an interview where someone who had a pass at the script originally said that Ally (Gaga's character) had to be given more lines so I can only imagine the original script was solely Jackson staring at her as she sang.
I was incredibly moved by Sam Elliott, oddly enough.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | October 6, 2018 3:33 AM |
I just saw it and I’m still floored. The acting, the singing, the songs themselves, the direction, the script...it’s all just so fantastic. The songs are fucking fabulous and I can totally see “Shallow” winning Best Song. Even the pop stuff her character does in the movie is great. Bravo to Gaga and Bradley, who are both astoundingly good.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | October 6, 2018 3:35 AM |
R149 she is dying, yes. But she survived the Bodyguard soundtrack, I think she can handle this. At least Madonna was able to score hits from every movie she has ever starred in. When she released one, anyway. It remains to be seen if Gaga can do that. I guess at this point, if the soundtrack sells well, it won't even matter.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | October 6, 2018 3:37 AM |

Best Picture
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Direction
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Original Song ("Shallow")
Best Original Song ("Is That Alright?")
Best Film Editing
Best Cinematography
Does that look about right?
by Anonymous | reply 171 | October 6, 2018 3:44 AM |
I wonder if Beyonce feels some kind of way that she turned this movie down because she ultimately didn't want to work with Eastwood (who was scheduled to direct the film).
She said in the past that one of her goals is to win an Oscar. If Lady Gaga is nominated for Best Actress and wins, I can see Beyonce kicking herself that she dropped out of the movie.

R169 might want to have a look at the itunes chart. The Soundtrack is going to be massive. Not like the BodyGuard, because no one sells 42 million copies anymore. Whitney deserves to hold that record, forever. Madonna can't even sing, never mind act. Whatever makes her head explode is just icing on the cake.
Gaga is going to win an Oscar, maybe two! Then Streisand's head can explode too. We can dream.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | October 6, 2018 3:53 AM |
R173 No because you don't want it to happen? Those are all reasonable predictions.

by Anonymous | reply 178 | October 6, 2018 4:01 AM |
The screenplay is barely serviceable and the songs far from memorable.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | October 6, 2018 4:02 AM |
Whether it's as good as All About Eve or not isn't the point. It all depends on what the competition's like in any given year. A Star Is Born is easily the frontrunner so far.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | October 6, 2018 4:07 AM |
This would have to be a pretty weak year for it to be the frontrunner. And if that's the criterion it doesn't say much for the movie.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | October 6, 2018 4:10 AM |
r111 they had the pop songs in there because Cooper was trying to illustrate what happens to authenticity when you are an artist and big music companies come calling. They change you and sanitize you and package you so that you can sell and make crazy money. You get drained of any purity you have to express your music and instead turn into a mainstream bullshit artist.
Cooper also wanted so send a message with his script of encouragement to anyone who wants to be any kind of artist.

I loved until Gaga’s character is a sellout and becomes a Beyoncé like artist. Still a very good movie. G should get a nomination and I hope Bradley who is great whole movie wins the Oscar. Both Bradley and Gaga give great vocals the songs welll make me think the ones in Barbra’s version wasn’t that bad. Gaga’s song at the end should have been a great moment Also if John loved her so much he shouldn’t have killed himself at a place where she would have found the body. Judy and Barbra’s version handled the death much better.

This movie showed just how sugar coated Babs version was. And how no one was going to out act her, at the cost of not showing a truly destructive character that John Norman/Maines should be. My heart broke for everyone in Gaga's version. Yeah I hated how pop-y they made her but now I see the point. I feel like I need to see it again.
And OMG, I thought the dog was going to die. I know, MARY!
by Anonymous | reply 192 | October 6, 2018 3:28 PM |
I remember the Streisand version, I was in high school when it was released and watched it with a friend who is now dead. We sat through it a second time we loved it so much. This version is perfect for now, that version was perfect for then. Cooper did a good job and deserves an Oscar nod. Gaga was good and some moments great but I wouldn't nominate her because there are bound to be performances from women who have pulled performances requiring more acting chops than what Gaga is serving. No shade.
It's interesting that for the opening moments of the movie and for at least the first 15 minutes? the focus had to be held by Bradley and Gaga because it was mostly all them on screen, and they pulled it off. I forgot it was Lady Gaga after those opening minutes of them meeting. Cooper did some work with Gaga to get her to just be herself, I could see that. I felt like I was seeing a bit of who Gaga is when she's not being Gaga I think that helped create the intimacy I felt between the main characters. Well done Bradley.
I'm sure reactions will be mixed. I liked it, it was good not great. Some people will absolutely love it though.

Saw it Thursday night at the local cinema in my small Midwest town. I liked it a lot. I am a big Bradley Cooper fan...since Wet Hot American Summer.....and I really liked him in this.
Not a Gaga fan before, but I thought she did a fine job here and certainly was up to anything the screenplay required of her.
Like one poster above said - the death was better handled in earlier versions - but the music was terrific and the story moved along.
Bought the soundtrack on Friday - only ONE left on the rack at the local WalMart at 9:15 a.m.
Good movie movie....NOT great - but certainly not an embarrassment for anybody. Oscars could be plentiful and I hope BC grabs one.

Lady Gaga was the wrong choice to appeal to many flyovers. Have you seen the content of her videos? I was genuinely shocked by how much I loved this movie. The people who are saying it's the best since the Garland version are right. I knew what was coming and I was still moved. Gaga and Cooper are better than I've ever seen them and I believed them every second of the movie. I didn't care for Gaga on AHS at all, but she's more than up for the challenge here and I thought she did great work. Cooper is also someone I've never been enamored with, but he's brilliant here and has a great singing voice. Sam Elliot's final scene with Cooper is so beautifully played and subtle that he might not get any noms, but he should, because it wrecked me. It kinda reminded me of Donald Sutherland in Ordinary People - it's so realistic and nuanced that people really do forget he's acting and it's not as showy.

R222, if that's indeed you, good for you. But a word of advice: sentences with as many clauses as this one are unreadable.
[quote]The opening scenes contrast greatly in scale to the previous versions, where Garland’s Esther Blodgett was already present at the edges of show business, performing at a benefit at The Shrine Auditorium for Hollywood’s best and brightest, playfully interacting with her Norman Maine, an enormous, terrifying, alcohol-fuelled ego played by James Mason, who eventually snakes through a famed Hollywood haunt, The Copacabana, in a late night search for her; or Streisand — no shrinking violet as the fully formed supernova Esther Hoffman, standing up to her John Norman Howard, an authentic near rock and roll casualty played by Kris Kristofferson (who stopped drinking after viewing the film), as he talks over her late night set of mid-‘70s, feminist-inspired B-sides presumably somewhere in Laurel Canyon.

by Anonymous | reply 230 | October 6, 2018 10:55 PM |
r222 I think you missed the point about Ally's restructuring in the movie. Cooper wanted to show how the music industry takes someone with real talent and then makes them into mainstream bullshit fit for consumption by the largest audiences. Most of what you hear on the radio is vulgar and shallow, so Cooper is asking where are the authentic voices, the real talent?
by Anonymous | reply 231 | October 6, 2018 11:28 PM |
Thanks R231. I get that but I also think it’s a misstep. They sacrifice her character to make an obvious point and in the process ask her to be less than she is. It would be like casting Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard and asking her to play a character with the vocal talents of Little Eva. It’s also thinly scripted, with Ally barely resisting this dehumanising process - it didn’t work for me.
Frankly, it reminded me of Gaga’s Artpop phase - some of which I liked - but was her least commercially successful release. It was like they were serving it up again in the film, only this time it was a big hit. They idea that it would make her character a huge star just wasn’t credible.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | October 6, 2018 11:57 PM |
Just came back from seeing it.
r222, Mr. O'Neil, I had the same reaction you did to Ally's turn : "They sacrifice her character to make an obvious point and in the process ask her to be less than she is." r232.
And, you're correct that Cooper's script and direction make it more his character's story than hers, which it always has been, but, to a greater degree than in the Garland and, of course, the Streisand version.
I'm amused that Jon Peters is credited as producing this version and the Streisand one.
Overall, I LOVED it.
Call me corny, sentimental, unreliable and throw in undependable, too, but still, I forgot the thrill of being immediately caught up in seeing characters fall in love. The first half hour is sheer, manipulative, movie magic and , oh, did I love it.
A few nitpicks:
Easily it could have been trimmed by at least 10 minutes without sacrificing one bit of enjoyment.
Given the genre of music upon which Cooper's character is famous, it was jarring to hear The Allman Brothers and lead vocalist Gregg Allman in the background of a barroom scene because he and Allman Brothers sound is so clearly and obviously superior to Coopers sound and band that I'm surprised Cooper put them in and left them in.
That's not to say that Cooper's singing and instrumental performances aren't very good, they are, but still, he ain't no Gregg Allman.

I thought it was excellent, except for one point.
SPOILER!!
In both LG's first and last song, it cut away from LG to (1) BC's reaction to her performance, and (2) BC singing. You never take away the big ending of a song from the primary singer. Takes you right out of the song.

That's all Cooper. He was interested in casting Gaga after he saw her perform that exact song at a charity benefit in Hollywood. Good or bad, that's the song he wanted for his movie.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | October 7, 2018 1:58 AM |
It would have been far too obvious for her to sing a Garland song.
by Anonymous | reply 237 | October 7, 2018 2:07 AM |
I suppose it didn't bother me 222 because I've seen it happen in music careers in real life so I was glad for the ridiculousness of how the music industry operates being laid bare. Hoping this point makes it through to the audience enough that they start wanting more from music then what we get right now.

I just got back from seeing this movie. I loved it. I thought Gaga was wonderful. And I was going in from a cynical standpoint. Just doing my research and due diligence so I could see what all the fuss was about. She was amazing.
Bradley Cooper was stunning. I hate Nu-Country, but if you can relax into the world of the movie, it works. His character is incredible likable and I loved their chemistry. I think Cooper is a very astute director and I look forward to what he does next. And this is from someone who never really paid attention to him on purpose before.
Sam Elliot is wonderful. His relationship with Cooper is moving.
The ending slayed me. I was bawling. The idea that two people who find each other --fall deeply in love, are inspired by one another, and become better people through knowing one another--can't grow old together, just destroyed me. Cooper's character's pain really resonated with me and I am still reeling from that denoument.
I do agree that Gaga's character was easily led astray towards an aesthetic that was not authentic for her. But what would you do? Seems like she kept her feet on the ground through it, and was going to pull through towards her authentic self eventually, much like the real Gaga has done over the years. I loved the SNL scene, and thought it was very hilarious, and very generous of her, to mock herself and the more vapid aspects of working a pop image. It was endearing. At any rate, the character regains her integrity in the end.
So yeah. I really liked it. Did this movie NEED to get made? No. But it DID get made, and it's very entertaining and extremely well-done.

The album was very successful, holding the number-one spot on the Billboard 200 chart for six weeks and eventually was certified 4× Platinum by RIAA for more than 4 million copies in the US with a reported 15 million copies worldwide.

The game changing video for my new single "Don't Lie To Me" drops on Monday. Remember what they said when I starred in the original rock version of A Star Is Born:
[quote]The setting is no longer Hollywood and movie-making, but the contemporary rock scene. Its stars are Barbra Streisand, who plays an unknown singer as if she were the wolf disguised as Red Riding Hood's grandmother, and Kris Kristofferson, who plays the fading rock star whose last decent act, you might say, is passing on the torch of fame to Barbra, who, of course, looks perfectly capable of knocking him down and taking it away from him anyway.
[quote]The drama that contains it is as bogus as the star's performance when she pretends to be Esther Hoffman, unknown singer. There's also something completely bogus in the pairing of Miss Streisand and Mr. Kristofferson, who, as lovers, are less exciting than King Kong and Jessica Lange.
[quote]She plays a character totally out of touch with contemporary reality. She's supposed to be an obscure club singer sweating out a living. That's so we can see her apartment, which looks like a cross between the centerspread in Architectural Digest and a clearance sale at Crate and Barrel. Miss Streisand is too calculated. Nobody's told her that people wear jeans sometimes. But this isn't a movie about a star who dies, and Miss Streisand doesn't let us forget it. It's about a star being born.

That is a very good opening, even if it had a bigger budget than 30 million. But then again, it has been very heavily promoted, which cost lots of $, so it evens out a bit.
The musicals that have legs are usually fun and upbeat, like Greatest Showman, Mamma mia, etc. so we shall see.
The soundtrack isn't doing all that well, it is predicted to sell less than Cher's mamma mia album! The songs are doing well on iTunes, which is nearly obsolete, but poorly on spotify (so far).

I love this film. For me, there is a middle part that drags just a bit. I adore the first half - it was really amazing and some of the best filmmaking I’ve seen in years. There is a middle part (I would guess it runs like 20 minutes) when she’s getting popped up that kind of drags and just isn’t as interesting as the rest of the film. The last 15-20 minutes are really great though, esp Coopers acting and, to a slightly lesser extent, Gaga’s.
by Anonymous | reply 276 | October 7, 2018 1:50 PM |
r273 Yes, the film could have benefitted from being trimmed by about 10 minutes.
For instance, I've developed an appreciation of Dave Chappelle's talent, however, their is a prolonged scene which sets up the marriage between Main and Ally that drags. I don't think it should have been cut entirely, but, trimmed considerably.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | October 7, 2018 2:05 PM |
I think that whole Chapelle thing should have been cut. They should have cut some of the dance rehearsal stuff too, though there is a fab scene with Cooper watching the dancers - was shot in such a cool way that’s i can see why they kept it.
And they should have played Is That Alright during the wedding scene (which I loved) instead of I Don’t Know What Love is. Is That Alright is too good a song to just be thrown into the credits. And makes more sense during a wedding than IDKWLI.

He has a great scene when Ally visits him at rehab. Gaga is ok. I don't understand how there is Oscar talk for her peformance. The movie is longer than it needs to be. That's my take. I didn't get that sense at all. Matter of fact the main change Cooper wanted to make from the other films is that Jackson isn't jealous of Ally. He's disappointed that she's not being true to her voice, but I never felt upstaged by her. His issues were always his issues and it had more to do with his hearing and past hurts rather than Ally's ascension.

I'm surprised that this did so much worse than the 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. That movie was savaged by the critics, and the director, Frank Pierson, wrote a scathing article in Variety trashing Jon Peters and Barbra right before it was released.
It just goes to show how huge of a superstar Barbra Streisand was at her peak. Same goes with Whitney Houston and The Bodyguard. The success of those two movies and their soundtracks dwarfs the star appeal of Gaga.

I hated Gaga in American Horror Story and found her dull and wooden, but I really liked her in this. I'm a casual admirer of her talent, but I'm not a huge fan at all. I think the fact that an R rated adult drama is doing so well at the box office is always cause for celebration. They really don't make these mid-budget character driven movies for adults anymore.

I saw it tonight in a good-sized theater; a sign on the door said all the earlier performances were sold out, and my 7 pm screening sold out as well. There was a line for the 9:30 screening when I left.
Gaga is indeed very good, and what impressed me most was how she performed her songs in absolute character. Bradley Cooper was excellent, as was Sam Elliott in a supporting role.
I do agree the 10 minutes in the middle with Dave Chappelle and his family could have been cut; they added nothing, and it would have been better to show Ally's path from roots rock to pop diva (it happens very quickly). And the character of her gay best friend disappears, only to show up when needed; making him her assistant would have been a better choice.
These are minor quibbles (DL's favorite kind). Overall it's pretty damn tremendous to have an R-rated movie for adults be this popular among both critics and audiences, and the fact they actually sing live in it is a hell of an achievement for a first-time director.

I just saw it. Um. Yeah. Not worth the price of admission, I'm gonna say. It's definitely not bad, but come on, this was nothing -- NOTHING -- to write home about. I think I hated the songs the most with the exception of Shallow.

I saw the movie and was impressed by all the actors. What I don't understand is why it merited an R rating? Maybe I'm completely out of touch with how movies are rated, but I saw nothing even close that would justify it being an R?

So there's no nudity of note.

I heard that Lens Dunham was being seriously considered for the role that ultimately went to Lady Gaga. She'd been taking private voice lessens for months, and was "unlike anything you'd expect" in her performance readiness. Would have been interesting, eh?
by Anonymous | reply 330 | October 8, 2018 3:00 PM |
ugh, r330. I only pass along what I read in the NY Times but, iirc, Cooper is on record as pursuing LG from the onset.
I'm actually thinking of going back to see it again. Not only to enjoy it again, but also to see if I have a different reaction to the Chappelle and Cooper scene which sets up the wedding. I've maintained that it slows the film down too much and should have been substantially cut.
The more I think about it, however, the more I get that that Chappelle's character telling him why he retired from music was meant to try to veer Main off the road to death.
Still, I do think that, while the entire Chappelle family and wedding should not have been ENTIRELY cut, still I think it should have been, at least, trimmed a bit.
by Anonymous | reply 331 | October 8, 2018 3:17 PM |
Gaga also shows a brief flash of her left boob when she’s straddling Coop in the tub. The nudity, all the cursing and the brief violence are why it’s rated R. And the drag queens.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | October 8, 2018 5:42 PM |
ASIB did great at the box office this weekend. Suck on this, haters!
[quote]And A Star Is Born delivered $41.25 million over the weekend — much higher than initial projections — along with the coveted “A” Cinemascore, which bodes well for the movie’s word-of-mouth prospects. Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut is the fourth version of a film that has previously starred icons like Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and Janet Gaynor; this version stars Lady Gaga alongside Cooper. Strong critical reviews also will likely set the film on the path to plaudits during the upcoming awards season.

Mass audience likes generic crap, News at 11
by Anonymous | reply 334 | October 8, 2018 6:30 PM |
There is one thing that has been bothering me. Once Ally becomes famous, her new songs are shit. her look is awful and can we talk about the dress she wears to the Grammys? Worst offender is that number at SNL. To me, it does not make sense because she is way too strong as a character to fall for that crap and she also has Cooper's character money/influence behind her. Are the songs/look ironic? They are awful. Is it some kind of meta-commentary?
I was expecting the Drag queens/gays to take over. I actually was expecting a number with LG and all the drag queens....
I liked it a lot but I was expecting to love it. Her "Bodyguard/My Man from FG" did not work for me because the song is so generic that it did not have any impact. Except for the very end of that song....

Where do Ally and her dad live? They seem straight out of Jersey or maybe Queen, but appear to live in East LA????
by Anonymous | reply 338 | October 8, 2018 7:33 PM |
I liked it a lot for all the reasons already listed : refreshing love story, interesting twist from the ASIB usual trope with the husband not being that jealous, vibrant and touching actors, etc.
Since it is more fun to concentrate on the minor squibbles, here are two.
1. Somethings doesn't work in the way the Grammy incident is staged.
It's the fact that Jack is clearly drunk and out of control in the auditorium, already when he is next to his wife, that he follows her when she goes up the stage and falls in the stairs. Normally shouldn't he have been stopped by security ? Shouldn't the crowd and Ally be already mortified and scandalized by this drunkard laying in the stairs ? He would have been expulsed before he reached the scene, no ? I, who admitedly know nothing about how you make a movie, think Jack should have been in the sidelines, when he drunkenly decides to join Ally on the scene where she didn't expect him and then cause all the embarassment. More realistic, as devastating, same cringe inducing conclusion to the scene.
2. Ally's manager talks to Jack about all the troubles and negativity his antics caused to her career. What about Jacks manager ? Shouldn't he have one ? And that would have been the last straw, when he'd say:" I'm outta here. You won't come back from that one." And that would underline even more his descent ?
Anyways, I thought the movie had a heart, even if the second part was imperfect. Nice counter programming to all the action drivel monopolizing the screens nowadays.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | October 8, 2018 7:35 PM |
Jacks manager was his brother, Sam Elliott’s character. Til he quit. But he kind of seemed to come back around Grammys.
I actually think Jacks final straw was her lying to him about her tour. He didn’t want her to give that up because of his problems.

I see three Best Original Song nominations for "Shallow", "Is that Alright?", and finally "I'll Never Love Again". The last one has Oscar written all over it. I actually loved the song, and I usually hate those kind of ballads. But you have to hand it to Gaga. Her performance is wonderful. Brava!
by Anonymous | reply 345 | October 8, 2018 8:14 PM |
R345 I agree. A song like that normally reeks of cheese but you can hear so much emotion in her voice. Its beautiful.

Very much looking forward to Gaga's live performance of "I'll Never Love Again" at the Oscar telecast. It will be EPIC! She's got a bunch of performances lined up in Vegas before the Oscars. I'm thinking this should serve to warm her up for Oscar night. The world needs this. I'm gonna love to see her bestowed with Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | October 8, 2018 8:26 PM |
A $42 million opening is only so-so. I notice that articles keep qualifying the numbers by stating that they're good for a musical drama. Well, I guess that's why Hollywood doesn't make musical dramas anymore.

I don't get it. Is Timotwee in this?
by Anonymous | reply 349 | October 8, 2018 9:21 PM |
Took my nearly 80 year old mom to see it this afternoon (I work for a bank so today's a holiday). While there were times the movie slightly flagged, not once did I fee the need to check my watch. The concert scenes are really amazing and help frame what is really an intimate drama about a troubled and interesting romance. GaGa's naturalistic and low key take on Ally really works, partially because it's so not "look at me act", but more so because it sets her really blazing vocal performances in high relief. And the banality of her "hits" once the evil Brit producer gets his hooks into her contrast beautifully with the rawness of her performances under Jack's wing. Cooper (for whom I normally have an irrational Hate) is amazing. As somebody who was in a long term relationship with a charismatic, but doomed, substance abuser - he fucking nailed it! But some of the real glories of this film are the supporting performances. Shangelaand Willam are hysterical. Andrew Dice Clay is both both old school Catskills funny (his rapport with his limo drivers is welcome comic relief). But he's truly moving as a single dad who both unconditionally loves but does not quite "get" his child. And if Sam Elliot doesn't win a best supporting actor Oscar for this movie it will be a true injustice. He was amazing throughout but his final scene with Cooper was gut wrenching. Who knew backing out of a driveway could reduce an audience to tears?

Surprisingly adult and humane, with lots of humor and, perhaps most daringly in this jaded hypercommercial environment, many moments of simple, touching emotion.
Cooper was amazing and Lady GaGa carries the role marvelously.

-When she is discovered at this drag bar is that in LA?

I didn't like how we didn't see how Ally's life changed from a fiscal and financial standpoint. They didn't show her making money and becoming RICH .... and how wealthy was Jackson? He's driving a shitty pickup truck and living in the hills?
NOR did we see HER BECOMING FAMOUS for that matter ... suddenly she WAS famous. And just her manager was running the show? An artist like her would have a SQUAD of people all over from the label (what was her deal???), publicists, etc ...
Bad writing by Eric Roth, who is a terrible screenwriter anyway.

R429 how can you know what category it will be competing in for the Golden Globes? The Globes are months away. It's a musical so in all likelihood they will put it in the musical/comedy category. There is usually less competition in that category. A win will increase chances of an Oscar nom.

Best Director
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Original Song (I'm predicting at least two nominations here)
Best Sound Mixing
Best Cinematography
Best Film Editing

I just watched it last night and have a MEH experience. Performance wise was amazing, love Gaga and Cooper; both performed awesomely. What ruined it for me was the theater that it was played in; no surround sound, only front facing speakers. I read an article beforehand that Bradley recorded/scored this movie to play in a Dolby equipped theater to make you feel like your in the middle of a concert. Half the experience is the audio portion.
So to anyone planning on seeing this movie: make sure your theater has at least some kind of surround sound system, Dolby/THX, whatever... I'm gonna give it a second go next week at a much better tourist trap theater.
I did spend 20 bucks to see Mad Max in NYC when it first came out, I forget what audio technology they used (Sony 4D?) but 75% of that experience was the audio (built in sub-woofers/seat vibrators/hydraulics).... Was fucking awesome, watched the movie a couple years ago at home and; MEH.

r442 It really is.
What Oscar would Lukas Nelson be in the running for, besides Best Song if the producers decide to push other songs besides Shallow and (presumably) I'll Never Love Again? His songs are great, though I doubt that voters will go for any of them over those two. But there's no denying that he gave most of the movie its characteristic sound. And that's sure worth an Oscar.

R457, to each their own. But critics are pretty over the moon with both the movie and the soundtrack. Gaga isn't exactly the vapid pop star from 5-6 years ago. I had no thoughts about her back in her prime. Good or bad. But I've grown to dig her. I'm glad she's having a bit of a renaissance.
by Anonymous | reply 458 | October 15, 2018 12:48 AM |
R453 those aren't sales, that number includes streaming equivalents. the true sales was under 200K Isn't she giving away the shallow with movie tickets, that's why it is the only song doing well?

R459, I know all about SPS. That's the case for every album these days. SPS is the official number. Pure sales mean nothing nowadays. Which I hate. But it's the metric that used.
And there are zero bundles with the ASIB soundtrack/singles.

I just saw it and thought she was fine. But Cooper==holy crap he was really, really good! I gotta say that I don't get all the accolades for her though. Her botoxed forehead and lip filler weirded me out, and I never once, not one time, forgot that I was watching Gaga. I feel bad saying this but, dear god, she's so unattractive too! In videos and photos a skillful director can shoot her in a skillful manner an minimize that, but in a feature film there's no denying it.
by Anonymous | reply 466 | October 15, 2018 1:19 AM |
She's raw and loud and her voice has great resonance. But her vocals are past peak at whatever age she is. As a singer she's closer to Bette Midler and Liza than she is to Streisand or Whitney. She can sing a lot of things but those big notes are nasal and strained. Don't give me the Tisch school bullshit....Gaga is trained but she's never been a great singer. I like the songs,, they suit her and she represents herself well. Phony pop star and campy pop star. Bitch can deliver a ballad. Bradley Cooper was more amazing though - he has all the trophies coming his way.
by Anonymous | reply 467 | October 15, 2018 1:23 AM |
Whoever talked her into using brown hair was very smart. She looks like a normal human being. With those bad blond wigs and facial surgery she has had, she looks deranged.
I'm weird, the only time I liked her was during the Artpop era -- the two singles, anyway. I agree that she is past her prime vocally, I DON"T think she can carry ballads. The Shallow works because she gets to shout, its not really one.
by Anonymous | reply 469 | October 15, 2018 1:31 AM |
I think shes better vocally now than shes ever been. Way better than when she first started with Just Dance.
by Anonymous | reply 470 | October 15, 2018 1:36 AM |
I just listened to a couple of the songs but I don't find them as memorable as the ASIB 1976 soundtrack. "With One More Look At You" and "Evergreen" are catchy tunes that you can remember. Unfortunately, Oscar-winning songs haven't been memorable for awhile now.
by Anonymous | reply 471 | October 15, 2018 2:04 AM |
Yeah, "love, soft as an evening chair" is an amazing catchy line. At least Streisands voice is amazing to make up for those lyrics. These new songs can get a bit corny but not that bad.
by Anonymous | reply 472 | October 15, 2018 2:34 AM |
Didn't Paul Williams have to due Barbra over one of the songs?
by Anonymous | reply 473 | October 15, 2018 2:42 AM |
R472- "With One More Look At You" is a better song in ASIB than "Evergreen" and it should have won the Oscar but they weren't going to give the award to a song that Streisand didn't help write.
They don't write songs anymore that are catchy enough so that the audience will remember them long after they leave the movie theatre. What happened to songs like "Moon River", "The Way We Were", "The Rainbow Connection" etc? Everyone can hum along to those songs.
by Anonymous | reply 474 | October 15, 2018 2:45 AM |
R473- I doubt Williams had a fun time working with her. Johnny Carson asked him what it was like working with her and he said that working with Barbra Streisand was like trying to have a picnic at the end of a runway.
by Anonymous | reply 475 | October 15, 2018 2:47 AM |
Streisand's voice was all wrong for her version of A Star is Born. If SHE had played it as the ugly woman with an amazing voice and showed the vulnerability of having her talent passed over, she would have been much more effective. Instead we get her tacky singing with the "Oreos." and everything else is full blown Barbra diva excellence. I only watched her version last weekend, I wasn't alive in 1974. She was a magnificent singer but the part was all wrong for her and too right for Chris Kristofferson. Reminded me of The Rose with not as good music. Evergreen is a lame song, like singing the scales. But the last 7 minutes of that movie are pretty magical. With One More Look At You.
The Garland version and Brad and GaGa are the ones that tell a BIG love story. A star is born, another drowns. With music.

It's a huge success and far from done yet. Garland's (Cukor's) version is the most prestigious, and Cooper and Gaga are critically on fire. Barbra didn't even have a costar or a director. Just the way she likes it. It's not a Madonna troll shading Gaga, ASIB or this thread. It's that weird, strange, sick, OLD, Streisand fanatic.

by Anonymous | reply 485 | October 15, 2018 4:07 AM |
There aren't many raving for Gaga here, just posters expressing surprise and appreciation for her performance. We already knew she could sing. It's a good movie, a very good movie of it's type. Anyone who says otherwise has some other agenda. Garland, Streisand and Gaga are all hugely celebrated AND polarizing talents. A star used to mean something. Gaga does alright, but Cooper plays the star.
I am one of the few (on DL) who wanted this remake starring Beyonce. Bey at 30 would have broken every heart as undiscovered singing talent and set movie screens aflame with her transformation. She is a better singer and performer than Gaga. Bey would have to be directed by Bradley Cooper though, so the time space continuum won't allow.
The constant rasp and scraped notes in Gaga's very loud vocals tired me out pretty quickly. Garland had vocal flaws too, but the best singing of her life is in ASIB.
by Anonymous | reply 486 | October 15, 2018 4:30 AM |
R476- I think they had a ton of trouble with the music and it shows. Apparently Rupert Holmes started working on the songs and Streisand wasn't satisfied so that's when she hired Williams/Ascher. The thing that sticks out is that the movie tried to sell the idea that the audience who cheered John Norman Howard's Hellacious Acres would also be cheering for The Woman In The Moon- which in real life wouldn't happen.
by Anonymous | reply 487 | October 15, 2018 4:34 AM |
Rupert Holmes and Paul Williams - was Neil Sedaka unavailable? The fault is always Streisand's terrible taste in everything. Words to live by. She wanted Elvis as her costar? Fucking crazy great idea....but she insisted he play a chauffeur. Her father!

by Anonymous | reply 489 | October 15, 2018 5:32 AM |
I disagree R489. Bey is definitely a better performer than Gaga, but no way in hell is she a better singer. Gaga has such better control, enunciation, and pitch. Plus, she thrives singing live. She rarely makes a technical mistake.

by Anonymous | reply 495 | October 15, 2018 10:31 AM |
I was totally disappointed by this. I bought into the hype and went in expecting to be reluctantly swept away. I wasn't.
The first third of the film is magical but then something happens and the film begins to buckle midway and never truly recovers, though it doesn't completely crash and burn.
Lady Gaga is charming and surprisingly subtle and effective but ultimately she lacks the level of skill needed to overcome the film's disservice to her character and her development.
Cooper gives an excellent performance, certainly worthy of a nod to honor his turn and his directorial efforts, but not a win.
I wouldn't nominate this film for anything else outside of some tech categories. A film that somehow avoids focusing on the development and motivations of (the female) titular "star" in favor of pussyfooting around the scrutiny of the male costar is somewhat irritating.
by Anonymous | reply 496 | October 15, 2018 11:27 AM |
r487 Barbra's version doesn't work because the kind of music Esther sang was outdated. There was no way she could have filled stadiums with that kind of music. But her With One More Look at You/Watch Closely Now was fantastic, a great ending looking for a great movie to build up to it.
r492 Bradley has said in interviews that he was trying to sound like Sam Elliott. He then hired him to play his brother.
The movie blows its wad fairly early. The parking lot scene and the concert performance of Shallow were such high points that the rest of the movie struggled to live up to them. It didn't help that as Ally became more famous, the more her music sounded "sellout". Makes sense, of course, but doesn't make for great storytelling.

I've seen all four. Part of what I love about the current version is that Cooper has hired amazing supporting performers and let them shine. Sam Elliot is at turns full of rage and heartbreaking and had better win an Oscar. Dave Chappelle has dramatic chops one would not have guessed he had, and Andrew Dice Clay is brilliant. Tiger Dad, reality check and comic relief wrapped up in one package - his interactions with his crew of drivers had me giggling like a schoolgirl. Anthony Ramos is the perfect GBF, and Shangela and Willam are comic gold in their small roles. Only Rafi Gavron rings false. But that might be because the character is just too detestable to really bring any nuance to it, although it would have been interesting to see someone like Alan Cumming take a crack at it.

I saw the movie this weekend and was surprised about how much I liked it. I don’t know that’s a “for sure” with the Oscars but it’s a fine directorial debut for Cooper (whom I was previously neutral on) and he got really good performances from the whole cast, especially Sam Elliott who I would love to see nominated. R492, I read that Cooper was trying to make his voice close to Sam Elliott’s R507, Ally’s father was played by Andrew Dice Clay??? He was great in his role as well. Who knew he had it in him.

I thought Bradley Cooper and Sam Elliott were terrific and Cooper created the right structure for GaGa to flourish....he made her accessible. The one scene where he talks about her nose was weird since both Cooper and GaGa have had major rhinoplasty work done. I thought GaGa’s songs were nice and she didn’t do the bombastic over dramatic shtick that she does on her records..there were times she channeled Whitney ala The Bodyguard...an overall entertaining film....
by Anonymous | reply 531 | October 17, 2018 1:01 PM |
I’m loving how Gaga is flourishing again. There was a time after her meteoric rose where girls like Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus we’re almost usurping her, and now it’s like Katy and Miley who? Gaga has always been the brightest and the most interesting out of these young girls, and that includes Taylor Swift, Kesha and the whole lot.
by Anonymous | reply 532 | October 17, 2018 6:35 PM |
Saw it today and was underwhelmed. Cooper has clearly seen too many John Cassavetes films as he drags the dialogue scenes to the point of tedium though I'm sure he thinks they're so "real." Unfortunately that's not the same thing as dramatic. Cooper is channeling Jeff Bridge's Oscar-winning performance from CRAZY HEART (similar vocal inflections), but he does has some touching scenes.
Gaga does welll - she comes off like genuine human being unlike her awkward acting in AHS: HOTEL. Regarding the songs, the earlier ones she does are better than the later "pop" songs and the saccharine Diane Warren ballad at the end. I kept waiting for Cooper's character to ask her why she suddenly goes along with the "pop" musical direction foisted upon her by that asswipe manager.

He most certainly expressed his reservations. It was the source of dramatic tension in the second half.
[quote]Diane Warren ballad
Diane Warren did not write I’ll Never Love Again (or Is That Alright in the end credits, if that’s what you meant). In fact, the song she helped write (Why Did You Do That) is an uptempo number, one of the songs Jack would have had a problem with.

I loved "Why Did You Do That". We were laughing hysterically at the theater. So hilarious and cheesy, and clearly Gaga had fun writing that one (with Diane Warren).
"Why you keep on texting me like that...?"

R532 she's still second tier behind Taylor, Beyoncé, Adele for sure. Arguably even Pink, Rhianna. Yeah I guess she's better than Miley, what a high bar to set! I think Kesha's song Praying is better than anything Gaga has done.
by Anonymous | reply 537 | October 18, 2018 6:11 AM |
r536 Why do you look so good in those jeans? / Why'd you come around me with an ass like that? 😂😂😂
By the way, judging from the soundtrack, I think Is That Alright was originally meant as some kind of wedding song but was cut from the final edit. The dialogue that came before it (preserved on the soundtrack) seems rather forced, so I don't mind that it was cut. But it's a great song that has Ally imagining having a family with Jack. It's heartbreaking not because it seems plausible, but precisely because it's not.

You are so wrong, r537. GaGa is a far deeper and broader talent than any of the great performers you list. It's ashamed she created the name Lady GaGa, it's too artificial and too small for her boatload of talent. Of course, your rating of talent is certainly as valid as mine, but ...
by Anonymous | reply 539 | October 18, 2018 6:27 AM |
R539 I don't get where she is exactly. Taylor is by far the biggest popstar currently. She and Beyoncé sell more albums, have more hits, have bigger tours by far.
I would argue Pink and Kelly Clarkson are better singers. Rhianna has one hit after another.
People always says she's "talented". Where are the great albums, great songs? She co writes, co produces, uses hired musicians on her album like all other pop girls, she's supposed to somehow be better with worse material?
This soundtrack will get her a top ten then will fade away. She's still rich as fuck and has been very very successful, I'm sure she is OK with her career.

Gaga can do it all - acting, singing, dancing, performing - and she'll be resented for it. I'm so afraid Hollyweird will want to give senior citizen Glenn Close an Oscar because she's dying or something. Not fair. Gaga deserves it.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | October 18, 2018 10:00 AM |
R537/R539 is way off base. Gaga second tier? I think not. And since when did Beyoncé have a monster solo pop hit outside of Crazy in Love and Put a Ring On It? Taylor’s songs are shit compared to Gaga’s, and she’s a phony piece of work on top of it.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | October 18, 2018 10:04 AM |
I meant R537/R540 are way off base. R539 is correct.

There's something so odd about watching some of you queens desperately trying to make this critically acclaimed hit sound like a total failure. I get that you're scared of new things, but the intense efforts to deny reality make you look a little nuts. It's a hit. People like it. The critics praised it. Move on with your lives. You'll be fine.

The buzz on this movie is completely dead. It was incapable of pulling number one at the box office even once. Nobody cares about romantic weepies. It may get a couple of noms (Gaga will not be nommed for actress,) but will get nothing other than song.
Sorry kaweens.

Gaga’s genius (if you can call it that) was being able to coopt performance art and costume and bring it into the mainstream without it looking completely stupid to the general public. Combine that with okay skills at the piano, and a good-ish pop sound and stage ability, and I’ll give you that she’s a pop star. She’s fine, but she’s not a skilled actress. She’s Jack of all trades, master of none.

iTunes isn’t a barometer of anything R453. They’re moving to subscription model because they’re such failures at actually selling music. Only the olds use iTunes.

The direction is uninspired but it's a serviceable remake. Better than expected. Cooper doesn't embarrass himself. Gaga surprises in a naturalistic performance, shining especially when singing. B+

R553, Shallow is also #5 on WW Spotify, #5 on the Billboard 100 (and this is without much radio). Sorry, it's a pretty damn big hit - especially impressive because it's so vastly different than current pop trends.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | October 18, 2018 9:34 PM |
Gaga is still A+ list in the music biz. She's more relevant than her peers, Beyonce, Katy, Pink, Brittany, Kelly.
Gaga's ASIB had the second biggest worldwide debut for a female album this year, behind only Ariana Grande's Sweetener.
by Anonymous | reply 560 | October 18, 2018 9:43 PM |
Beyonce is the biggest star in the world. Many other women in pop music are better singers/and or performers than Gaga.

Beyonce, Taylor, Adele: A+
Gaga, RiRi, Cardi B, Pink, Ariana: A
Katy, Nicki, Miley, Selena: B
If Gaga gets the Oscar nom? Shoots back up to A+
Of course their are more talented performers. But that's not how the pop world works. Sadly.

The Academy is routinely biased against popstars who become actors. Cher is different because she was a dam music legend and had established herself as a serious actress before she actually won, with a decade long resume. As outstanding as Gaga is I can't see the Academy forfeiting Glen for what might be her final chance at the gold. Anyone remember Diana Ross' notorious snub for Lady Sings the Blues.

R565 she's not, that's why she cancelled all her non US concert dates because they weren't selling. That's why she's running to Vegas.
She needs a classic, popular widely acclaimed album like Ray of Light, Like a Prayer, Lemonade, 21, 25, 1989, etc. I don't think she has in her, Artpop and Joanne were wretched, and did not sell that well.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | October 19, 2018 5:37 AM |
R568 she was sold out all throughout Europe. Just like she was in the US. Her illness (whether real or imagined) is why she cancelled the final European leg of her tour. It's cool if you don't like her, but don't lie about her status. From 2009-2013 she was in the A+ category. Now, Gaga is one notch below Adele, Taylor and Beyonce. And this movie and the soundtrack - which is projected to be number one again this week - is putting back on that track.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | October 19, 2018 5:44 AM |
Yeah she needs to make another dance/pop album and not deviate like she did with Joanne. I own all of her albums and her first two were the best ones. Only a few songs on Artpop and Joanne, still are on rotation for me.
by Anonymous | reply 570 | October 19, 2018 5:48 AM |
r568 you are a fucking dipshit. Idiot. Born this way sold more than 8 million albums worldwide and 2.5 million in the US alone. Beyonce's Lemonade barely sold 2.5 million in the entire fucking world. You mother fucking piece of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | October 19, 2018 5:49 AM |
R570 I'm weird the only songs of hers I like are Do what you want, and applause and perfection illusion to a lesser extent.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | October 19, 2018 5:52 AM |
R571 see that shows how far she has fallen. And she sold how many of those copies of Born this way for 99 cents? Wikipedia has Lemonade at 3.5 million, it has far outsold Joanne -- comparing their most recent albums.
Forgetting sales, we are talking about widely acclaimed, groundbreaking, popular albums which will stand the test of time.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | October 19, 2018 6:00 AM |
The ASIB soundtrack is damn amazing. The three main ballads - Is That Alright?, Always Remember Us This Way, and I Will Never Love Again - are fucking fantastic. Shallow is unique and emotional - she sings the hell out of it. A couple of the pop songs miss the mark, but the production and vocals are still great. Her best album since The Fame Monster and considering 13 of the tracks are hers, about the size of a normal album.
R573, I do think Lemonade was better than Joanne (though I dug the country vibe and it has sold SPS over 2 million WW), but ASIB is going to obliterate The Carters in sales and acclaim.

I feel after this movie fades, Gaga will have a Cher like career. She's too big to ever go away, but she's already a legacy act without much of a legacy.
I kind of like Shallow, I should say that's another one of hers I can stand.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | October 19, 2018 6:17 AM |
R572 I think Applause and Do What You Want are her two best songs too. I never liked Gaga until that Artpop album. I thought it was incredibly forward thinking for a pop album.
by Anonymous | reply 578 | October 19, 2018 6:56 AM |
R574, the pop songs were supposed to "miss the mark"...they were meant to show her character's descent into pop mediocrity, and to a hilarious degree. Did you not understand that part of the movie?
by Anonymous | reply 579 | October 19, 2018 6:59 AM |
Do What You Want became a good song when Aguilera did the revamp with her. Gaga stole everything from Xtina and Madonna anyway. Xtina could have done this movie for that matter, she's much prettier and looks younger than Gaga & she sings better of course.

Joanne has several great tracks on it. Diamond Heart and Perfect Illusion are catchy as hell and she sang the hell out of both of them. Dancing in Circles is a hot track that makes perfect use of double entendre. Hey Girl is touching and uses the Elton Benny & the Jets sample deftly. Million Reasons was a bonafide worldwide smash.
Also, Heavy Metal Lover, Sheisse, Highway Unicorn, Gov’t Hooker and Marry the Night from BTW and Do What You Want, Aura, and Swine from ArtPop are among the best stuff she’s done post-Fame Monster.
That Gaga can completely leave her niche zone like she did with Cheek to Cheek, Joanne and the ASIB soundtrack and still get acclaimed #1 albums automatically puts her a notch above her contemporaries. None of the other girls have done that.
