TMZ:
Burt Reynolds died of a heart attack Thursday morning at a hospital in Florida, according to multiple reports.
Reynolds was 82.
Burt was transported to a Florida hospital after going into cardiac arrest. His family was by his side when he passed.
Reynolds had heart problems for years -- he underwent major heart surgery in February 2010.

by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 6, 2018 7:12 PM |
Had he begun or finished shooting the Tarantino movie?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 6, 2018 7:14 PM |
I wonder who he played in the Tarantino film? I'm guessing George Spahn.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 6, 2018 7:18 PM |
Has Sally issued a statement (these days that would be a Tweet)?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 6, 2018 7:19 PM |
Well he had a hot ass, but he couldn't live forever.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 6, 2018 7:21 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 6, 2018 7:24 PM |
What will he be remembered for the most? Deliverance? Smokey and the Bandit?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 6, 2018 7:25 PM |
Sally used to give him blowjobs. She must be devastated.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 6, 2018 7:30 PM |
Has Loni commented?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 6, 2018 7:37 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 6, 2018 7:53 PM |
I just hope Susan Dey sends an appropriate response. Damn you, Susan.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 6, 2018 7:53 PM |
Why isn't BURT REYNOLDS DEAD TO ME?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 6, 2018 7:53 PM |
I didn’t realize on the roles he had turned down. Han Solo, RP McMurphy, Jack Nicholson’s role in Terms of Endearment. I’ll bet there was regret there.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 6, 2018 7:59 PM |
Have the girls on Richmond St. been notified.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 6, 2018 8:00 PM |
I would like to have seen his turn as Han Solo.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 6, 2018 8:07 PM |
He was great in Boogie Nights, probably his most acclaimed performance. He apparently hated the film.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 6, 2018 8:10 PM |
I’m waiting for Loni to tweet her condolences.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 6, 2018 8:15 PM |
I think Loni reconciled with him before he died.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 6, 2018 8:18 PM |
Well now he will be with his dearly departed wife, Debbie Reynolds.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 6, 2018 8:20 PM |
[quote]I’ll bet there was regret there.
Not to mention gin.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 6, 2018 8:21 PM |
Wasn’t he closeted with Jim Nabors, Hal Needham, Dom Deluise, etc?
I would be shocked if Sally or Loni said anything other than FU
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 6, 2018 8:23 PM |
Well....I guess that's a Reynolds wrap.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 6, 2018 8:29 PM |
He had a small but memorable part in a one-hour episode of The Twilight Zone as a very Brando-esque method actor. MeTV will be showing "The Bard" in nine weeks if you can't find it online ( I can't).

"The 5-year marriage officially ended in 1993, when Burt agreed to pay Loni $234,794.13. Reynolds refused to pay off the full bill for years -- but finally caved in 2015 ... 22 years after the divorce."------wow....NOT COOL.....
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 6, 2018 8:39 PM |
R24, We're more apt to hear from Dinah before we hear anything from Kathleen Turner.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 6, 2018 8:39 PM |
Love to picture him soaping up in the football lockeroom playing grab-ass
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 6, 2018 8:42 PM |
When your best friends were Charles Nelson Reilly, Jim Nabors, and Don DeLouise-----you probably have lots of closet space...
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 6, 2018 8:42 PM |
Did former lover and top George Maharis stay by his side?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 6, 2018 8:44 PM |
His death is just the latest excuse to look at shirtless and or pantless pics of Mr. Reynolds in his prime.
Ah, the 70s!!!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 6, 2018 9:17 PM |
He was the first (almost) nude man I clapped eyes on as a trembling gayling.
RIP, Burt.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 6, 2018 9:18 PM |
His women all seemed to end up hating him for being gay and mean to them: Judy Carne, Dinah Shore, Sally Field, Loni Anderson, that waitress
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 6, 2018 9:21 PM |
Still nothing from Sally?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 6, 2018 9:21 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 6, 2018 9:28 PM |
Sally said something!
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 6, 2018 9:31 PM |
R54, The only beard missing from that list is Debbie Reynolds...
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 6, 2018 9:31 PM |
Ahh, he was beyond beautiful in his day. That clip at r41 is really charming--I think he was under-appreciated. Wonderful in Deliverance, great in Boogie Nights. Good on ya, Burt. And if there was goo on ya sometimes, as well--good for you.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 6, 2018 9:36 PM |
I loved his laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 6, 2018 9:48 PM |
[quote]Sally Field, his "Smokey and the Bandit" co-star and former romantic partner who Reynolds once called the "love of my life," released a statement Thursday.
[quote]“There are times in your life that are so indelible, they never fade away," she said in the statement. "They stay alive, even forty years later. My years with Burt never leave my mind. He will be in my history and my heart, for as long as I live. Rest, Buddy.”
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 6, 2018 9:52 PM |
R47, Closeted or not he was a redneck with a colossal ego. He wouldn't have surrounded himself with handsome straight men who would have outshone him.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 6, 2018 9:52 PM |
He was quite something. RIP
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 6, 2018 10:00 PM |

Okay, completely off-topic, that photo of John Schneider is so h-o-t! Jesus that bristle brush 'stache and beard! Come to me man... oh the places I want to feel that beard!
by Anonymous | reply 73 | September 6, 2018 10:46 PM |
I have a commemorative glass from the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre that was in Jupiter. It should be worth a fortune now.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 6, 2018 10:46 PM |
This sounds awful but I found an old Cosmo in the attic with his semi-nude pics in it when I was a gayling. My first masturbatory experience.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 6, 2018 10:46 PM |
He is an an American icon. I miss the days when he was King.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 6, 2018 10:48 PM |
Same here R75!
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 6, 2018 11:57 PM |
He wasn't gay.
He was just a sex symbol in his heyday, so all the Eldergays from that era have to project their fantasies on him.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 7, 2018 12:02 AM |
I’m so sorry about this
by Anonymous | reply 80 | September 7, 2018 12:02 AM |
He sure seemed gay to me.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | September 7, 2018 12:04 AM |
What's this about Burt and George Maharis?!
by Anonymous | reply 82 | September 7, 2018 12:08 AM |
He was never attractive.
I'll never understand the sub-basic bitches who are into hairy, scrawny squares.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 7, 2018 12:08 AM |
He was the top box office draw in the U.S. for like, what, five years? He generally made awful movies. Those "Smoky and the Bandit" movies are execrable but were very profitable. In "Deliverance" and "The Longest Yard" he showed he could act if called upon to do it, but he tended to stick to crummy movies that were nonetheless popular with audiences. It bothered him that he wasn't taken seriously as an actor but it was his fault. He did a Playboy Interview where he claimed to as good an actor as the likes of Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro. I think he resented that they got all the acting awards and accolades and he didn't. He did keep winning "People's Choice" awards and things like that. But he desperately wanted to win an Oscar and was pissed that Robin Williams won instead of him when he was nominated for "Boogie Nights." On talk shows he was a funny guy. I think he was a genial egotist, a typical Hollywood type. I really enjoyed his performances in "Deliverance" and "The Longest Yard." May he rest in peace.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | September 7, 2018 12:10 AM |
Lord, what happened on the appearance with Mark Summers on the Tonight Show? that was amazing, how did you find that r16?
by Anonymous | reply 85 | September 7, 2018 12:20 AM |
Agree w R84. He was iconic for his time like Farrah Fawcett. He did have a giant chip on his shoulder and always seemed in pain emotionally and physically. RIP
by Anonymous | reply 86 | September 7, 2018 12:23 AM |
Hasn't he been dead for like twenty years ?
by Anonymous | reply 87 | September 7, 2018 12:29 AM |
No, just looked like it.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 7, 2018 12:31 AM |
🏂 The first Playgirl Naked Centerfold Model.
That's all I know.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 7, 2018 12:31 AM |
There were full-frontal pictures taken during the Cosmo photo shoot. Reynolds originally consented to publishing a full-frontal in the magazine's centerfold, and Gurley-Brown was going to do it, but his agent nixed the idea. Later he said he regretted the centerfold completely, but his "what the fuck" attitude throughout his career wasn't congruent with that. Maybe the entire photo shoot will be released after his death, who knows.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | September 7, 2018 12:32 AM |
r83, you type stupid.
That's Burt saying you're a fucking moron.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | September 7, 2018 12:32 AM |
He seemed to have rage issues. No woman could ever last very long with him.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | September 7, 2018 12:35 AM |
cause of death? any kin?
by Anonymous | reply 94 | September 7, 2018 12:37 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 95 | September 7, 2018 12:39 AM |
That's funny, r93--I'd say half of Datalounge has raging cunt issues.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | September 7, 2018 12:40 AM |
The oddest quote in R59's link:
[quote] Lena Dunham said Reynolds was the "glorious dictionary definition of a golden man. Thank you for spreading your glow."
Why would she have any comments on Burt Reynolds?
by Anonymous | reply 97 | September 7, 2018 12:41 AM |
He had some hairy eyebrows.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | September 7, 2018 12:43 AM |
R96 yes but only towards male cunts
by Anonymous | reply 99 | September 7, 2018 12:44 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 100 | September 7, 2018 12:46 AM |
The 70’s died today.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | September 7, 2018 12:51 AM |
Burt lived with Hal Needham for years, just saying.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | September 7, 2018 1:03 AM |
Hal Needham was quite the stud way back when.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | September 7, 2018 1:21 AM |
In the 70's people must have really been into body hair if they found him sexy. Hairy guys skeeve me out ewww! I bet in the 70's Robin Williams was thought to be hot shit.
Burt Reynolds was a 70's cliche thats why Boogie Nights worked for him. Skinny, scuzzy, and skeevy. Those skeevy skinny 70's bodies covered all over in those disgusting black wiry curly pube like hairs.
That nasty skinny hairy 70's look would never be considered attractive today. His career tanked when that look went out of style.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | September 7, 2018 1:26 AM |
At the time of their messy divorce, Loni said he beat her. Didn't they adopt a kid? I never liked him. Too smarmy.

Tina Louise:
[quote] I’m so sad to hear of Burt Reynolds passing. I had so much fun working with him in Germany on Armored Command. It was a great group of guys but Burt was such a talent—in both drama and comedy. Burt was a great personality—larger than life. He will be very missed.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | September 7, 2018 1:50 AM |
Did he leave a will? Oh, never mind.........
I did like him in STARTING OVER.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | September 7, 2018 1:54 AM |
r84 I agree, but he liked the Cannonball Run money, too. He also had great comic timing, and I think was under-rated in that respect.
OTOH, he was abusive to women and a closet case.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | September 7, 2018 1:58 AM |
He’s nothing without his signature moustache

by Anonymous | reply 111 | September 7, 2018 2:02 AM |
"He’s nothing without his signature moustache."
In his two best movies, 'Deliverance" and "The Longest Yard", he was without the mustache. I thought he looked good without it.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | September 7, 2018 2:02 AM |
r104=the stupidest bossy bottom twink you'll never want to meet. Mary, why don't you go away and let the grownups chat? Don't try to keep up with the conversation.
Really, r109? That's nothing at r91? Sure, Jan.

by Anonymous | reply 118 | September 7, 2018 2:27 AM |
Any statement from Dolly? I must have watched Best Little Whorehouse in Texas at least 20 times. It came out before I was born, but as a little gay boy in Texas, I was totally obsessed with the idea of the Chicken Ranch.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 7, 2018 2:30 AM |

Yes, there was, r119.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | September 7, 2018 2:37 AM |
Husband worked with him for years and confirms he was a total closet case - while he was married to Loni. Had a thing for FSU football players. No doubt at all as they hung around together along with Charles Nelson Reilly. Amazing he stayed closeted until the end. Sad. Not an easy life. But those were different times.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | September 7, 2018 2:40 AM |
I love the Dead to Me threads.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | September 7, 2018 2:40 AM |
R103, that is the gayest picture ever.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | September 7, 2018 2:50 AM |
It was heavily rumored that he had AIDS at the time he was married to Loni. If I remember right, the National Enquirer even reported it. He had some mysterious illness that nobody could explain and he disappeared for years. Loni divorced him at the same time the rumors came out.
The rumors were so pervasive that his PR person came out and denied them.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | September 7, 2018 2:50 AM |
R124, just standard seventies.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | September 7, 2018 2:51 AM |

Actually someone posted it on DL at some point in the last couple of years. It wasn't shopped IMO - it l looked like the real deal. His package was about what you would expect. Pleasant but not unusually large or small. I wish I had saved ..
by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 7, 2018 2:53 AM |
He seemed depressed in the last few decades.

Statement from Dolly Parton: "Oh how sad I am today along with Burt's millions of fans around the world as we mourn one of our favorite leading men," Dolly Parton tweeted out with a photo. "I know we will always remember his funny laugh, that mischievous sparkle in his eyes, and his quirky sense of humor. You will always be my favorite sheriff, rest in peace my little buddy. I will always love you."

R82 They used to play hide the salami together! Maharis was a pure top though.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | September 7, 2018 2:58 AM |
Here it is. Do you think it's the real deal ??
by Anonymous | reply 133 | September 7, 2018 2:59 AM |
Everyone knew he was gay. He dated Dinah Shore! He also dated Christie Evert and gave her a beautiful diamond bracelet. During a match, Chrissie’s bracelet fell off and play was stopped until she found it and that was how the iconic tennis bracelet was given it’s name.
Reynolds had a charming, relatable macho style on screen. He was easy to watch and never seemed to take himself too seriously. So few stars of today have this kind of appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | September 7, 2018 3:00 AM |
Actually I don't. the pubes don't fade into his stomach. Just abruptly end.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | September 7, 2018 3:01 AM |
No - not the real deal ..
by Anonymous | reply 136 | September 7, 2018 3:02 AM |
It's real. It's a polaroid test shot. They didn't use the full-frontals because his agents nixed it.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | September 7, 2018 3:03 AM |

I think if there was any gay stuff to come out it would have surfaced by now - I would be pretty ancient at this point. He never pinged for me but I get what people are picking up. A bit like Tom Selleck: very macho body but sort of a soft personality.

And Swayze died of cancer, too, right?
Another hog-rider and sausage-smoker.

Loni said that Burt became ill with something that she never fully understood. She said he became a depressed recluse and kept their Beverly Hills home dark at all times. It was really scary and she couldn't take it anymore, so she left and divorced him. That's when the AIDS stories started circulating.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | September 7, 2018 4:33 AM |
Lol, R148, I worked with one of Marlon's numerous illegitimate sons, who really was retarded. The whole family looked "special" to me.

Burt Reynolds Lived out Last Days on Famed Estate ... Thanks to Loving Landlord
Burt Reynolds was able to live out his final years at his longtime Florida estate thanks to a loving landlord who helped him out of a financial crisis.
Here's the backstory -- Burt sold his home in 2015 to his friend and neighbor Charles Modica after years of money woes and a decade-long struggle to unload it, but Charles allowed him to stay there for the rest of his life ... similar to Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion.
Modica tells TMZ ... he bought Burt's pad with the intention of letting the legendary actor continue living there, because moving would have been traumatic. Modica says he always respected Reynolds for all the good he did in Florida, so he charged him relatives pennies in rent. In fact, Modica says he doesn't even recall the exact amount -- his accountant handles it -- but it was a super small sum.
As for the waterfront property ... Charles has no plans to sell. Fact is, it's a good investment.
Burt bought the estate back in 1980 for $700k, and later lived there with his then-wife, Loni Anderson. He put it on the market in 2005, and it was priced all over the place -- as high as $15 million -- before he sold it in 2015 to Modica for $3.3 mil. Modica says it's now worth somewhere between $4 and $5 mil.
The 3.4-acre estate has a 12,000 sq. ft. main house and a 2-bed guesthouse, a movie theater, a pool decorated with the FSU logo, a dock on the water and a helicopter landing pad.

Burt also lived in a horribly tacky house with Loni in Sherman Oaks when they were married. I'd see them all the time in their Rolls.

Why Princess Diana Sent Burt Reynolds a 'Thank You Note'
Princess Diana was grateful to Burt Reynolds for taking the attention off of her following his explosive split from second wife Loni Anderson.
In his 2015 memoir, But Enough About Me, the late actor — who died Thursday at the age of 82 — wrote that after “we announced the separation, the press went into high gear.”
Continuing, he added that “Princess Diana sent me a thank you note for keeping her off the cover of PEOPLE Magazine.”

There are really people here who think Dom Deluise was straight?
by Anonymous | reply 225 | September 7, 2018 8:26 PM |
Oh for God's sake, the AIDS rumors were debunked years ago. And does having gay male friends automatically make somebody gay? He was in a business full of gay men; he no doubt worked with them all the time. He was an amiable sort of man; it seemed to me he was just gay-friendly. But then if you're friendly towards gays, there are some people who immediately assume that you are too. I knew somebody who wanted to get involved in a gay rights organization; the person was told by an acquaintance "if you do people are going to think you're gay, too." I guess there are people who believe that if you associate with gay you most certainly must be gay, because what straight person would do that? That's ridiculous but it looks like there are those on Datalounge who think that way.

The full frontal at R133 is real. It was bought and published by Stern magazine in Germany. Since Burt held the rights to the entire photo shoot, he would have been the one to sell the photo. I figure he told everyone he regretted the photo shoot, but in reality he had no problem showing it all off.
by Anonymous | reply 228 | September 7, 2018 10:46 PM |

Speaking of Burts friends seriously what did he get out of putting all these losers in all of his movies? Was he just they genuine a loyal friend that he wanted to always do right by them? If so, that’s seriously commendable even if he was flawed in other ways; but wondering if you all thought their might have been some other motive.

by Anonymous | reply 234 | September 8, 2018 2:21 AM |
There have been rumors for years that he was gay. And come on, the women he dated: Loni "Wigstock" Anderson? Sally Field, the ultimate non-threatening woman (even if she was excellent as Norma Fucking Rae)? And Dinah Shore? DINAH SHORE!!! That one pretty much seals the deal, as far as his gayness goes, if his queeny friends Dom DeLouise and Jim Neighbors weren't enough. So, why has nobody on our fair Data Lounge contributed a story on how he got his groove on with Burt in the 60s, 70s or 80s. At least several of you MUST have had sex with him. There are enough older gays (I refuse to use that other term) on this board -- as well as lurking Hollywood celebrities (but we don't mean you, Mindy Cohn, in this instance) -- some of you had to have had him. Fess up! Maybe Fess Parker had him. I don't think we can ask him anymore, though.
by Anonymous | reply 235 | September 8, 2018 2:32 AM |
That nude photo that was posted looks credible enough. It was the early 70s, and celebrities did wear skimpy bathing trunks. So he probably just shaved his pubes right along the top so they wouldn't show when he was sunning himself with his very manly friends. My question is: How big was it hard? It's difficult to tell from that photo. He could have 5 inches or he could have 10. Loni ... Sally? Can you give us some help here?
by Anonymous | reply 236 | September 8, 2018 2:36 AM |
I loved Fair Exchange!
It was a mid-1960s sitcom about 2 teenage girls, one from Brooklyn and one from London, who participate in an exchange program and live their senior year of high school in each other's home. Judy Carne was the British teen and lived with Brooklyn dad Eddie Foy Jr. (who theater queens will remember from The Pajama Game) and Brooklyn mom Audrey Christie (who movie fans will remember as Natalie Wood's neglectful mother in Splendour in the Grass).
Frankly, I can't remember what was so great about the series but I do remember loving it.

He had some great appearances on Carson. One night he talked about how he and Clint Eastwood went to an agent to get signed. I had the same experience while watching the DVD release of "Square Pegs." There are a few inspired moments, like Muffy's Bat Mitzvah, the Halloween episode and the Christmas episode (which wasn't hilarious, but it was touching). But overall, watching it as a grown-up, it really didn't hold up very well and probably wasn't particularly good at the time. R115 Yes, I agree with you. But this time it is true. I have met BR several times beginning with once on set of The Longest Yard eons ago. My boyfriend at that time wrote a song for the film, so we were invited to come hang out for the day's shoot.(I was a mere girl of 19 at the time.)
Purely coincidentally I moved to Jupiter in the early 80s and fell into the edges of his crowd there. He was very well liked and he was fun to be around most of the time. But you just knew instantly that he was a man's man. He sent out no sexual vibes to any of the women around him. Then finally I was at The Masters golf tournament in Augusta in 1986 and I was invited to a private party given by corporate big dog I knew from my earlier days. Burt and his testosterone crew were all there sans females. There was one guy he was much more attentive to than anyone of the men his age, and I later learned that was his date for the tourney.
But again, I tire of the "everyone's gay" theme here as well. Hell, every damn handsome man can't be gay. That would mean approx 25% of the men were in the closet.

R263, I think at that point Brando was just jealous. Reynolds was at the peak of his popularity in the late 70s (and I think that audio clip was from that era, right?). I listened to his "Indian kids" rant, and it just sounded like jealousy on Marlon's part. It's understandable. Most actors are narcissists. That's why they get into that business. Burt was No. 1 at the time. Marlon was a character actor at that stage in his career. That had to irritate him.

[quote]He wore really nice hairpieces at the peak of his career. Later, not so much.
I caught some repeats of Evening Shade last year, and I was really distracted by his hair piece.
It wasn't a bad show, but something about it did not quite click. I think it might have largely been Burt. He had some low key charm in it, but I am not sure he felt he needed to act other than be himself as if he was just telling stories on the Tonight Show. The hair piece and some facial work just further emphasized that you were watching an actor and not the character he was playing.
The show was folksy and cute and inoffensive, but not very memorable. Even though it had a pretty good cast, Michael Jeter seemed to be the only one who was putting in much of an effort. Granted, my viewing sample size was a couple of episodes, so it might not be accurate.

R285 what do you know bitch? I won an Emmy for it.

Rest in peace.
R235 I'm guessing he used male hookers who were paid to be discreet and not talk, or got with other bisexual and gay men who are actors/producers, etc. who are not out.

R284, I don't think its that. Brando, by the early '60s grew wary of all the attention and adulation bestowed upon him and retreated from the spotlight and became critical of the Hollywood machine. Burt Reynolds, on the other hand, at the height of his popularity, played up his macho swagger image to the hilt, appearing on magazine covers, talkshows, game shows, award shows, etc. He was loving life and loving all the attention. Nothing wrong with that, but I think it irked Marlon that rather than working on his craft, Burt was chasing after fame and popularity.

There have been rumors Loni was bi.

Did Scotty Bowers ever help Burt get hitched up? Maybe we'll stories now that Burt is gone.
by Anonymous | reply 290 | September 8, 2018 7:35 PM |
The big Brando/Burt connection you're all missing is Burt was desperate to play Sonny in The Godfather and hoped his resemblance to Brando would help in getting him the role.
But Brando made it clear to Coppola that he didn't want a Mini-Me playing his son. In spite of all the great roles Burt would later turn down, it was losing the role of Sonny that really stayed with him.

"Burt was desperate to play Sonny in The Godfather and hoped his resemblance to Brando would help in getting him the role."
But Burt was a very mediocre actor (to put it mildly). He wasn't suited for the role at all.

r292 wouldn't he have been just playing himself though, an over-sexed hothead?

Burt married Loni even though he claimed he never even liked her.
Odd.

What went wrong? He said he married his best friend.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | September 9, 2018 12:03 AM |
R291 Never knew that. Coppola was right to cast Caan; he may not have looked like Brando or Morgana King, but he was unforgettable. Not necessarily a tough role, but Caan did everything possible with it.

Burt wasn't a terrible actor...
by Anonymous | reply 302 | September 9, 2018 12:13 AM |
Loni stood by him when he got his jaw broken during a movie he did with Clint Eastwood. He was supposed to get hit in the face with a fake chair but when it happened apparently the prop man put the chairs in the wrong order and he got smashed in the face with a real one. That's where the AIDS rumors started. Joan Rivers on the Tonight Show used to tell them, and it ended Burt's friendship with her.
Burt felt he had to marry Loni out of loyalty, but he didn't really love her. Apparently, he also said she spent money like it was going out of style. Burt was screwing Pam Seals around this time, and according to Loni, his infidelity was so indiscreet she was even in the audience at their wedding!

R303 wow he must’ve started fucking Loni right after his break up with Sally. I though he met Loni later like 1986 or 87. The City Heat accident happened circa 1983.

I hope I haven't posted this before, but I bought Burt and Loni's carpeting, lol. There was this carpet store in LA that had great prices on smaller amounts, remnants, discontinued, etc. and I was doing a lot of flipping at the time.
Went in looking and there was carpet from their bedroom. I think there was 1500 SF of it. Evidently, she took one look and told them to pull it out because she didn't like the color of beige. It was originally some outrageous price per yard, and I got it for practically nothing. It was so thick and nice, you could sleep on the floor.
Thanks Loni!

Speaking of Loni, you don't hear too much about the son they adopted. He must have decided to stay away from the lime light. Although Loni herself has been quiet herself for years.

Jekyll and Hyde type of personality.

I see pics of him all the time, R307. Loni mentioned him in her comments about Burt's death.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | September 9, 2018 1:09 AM |
R307, Apparently, Loni drove a wedge between Burt and Quinton ever having a good father-son relationship after the divorce, and Burt died without ever patching things up. Burt wrote about their estrangement in his book.

Burt brought this all on himself.

I was just flipping channels and my cable service has something called GET TV, which is full of old shows. I see the title DAN AUGUST and get intrigued - this is a show that I never heard of. For a second I thought it was the show that Robert Urich starred in but then remembered he was Dan Tana and that show was VEGAS. This show stars Burt Reynolds - I never knew he had a show other than Evening Shade. I watched for 10 minutes and boy, the show looked like a cheaply produced 70's show - it was bad.

He was a regular on "Gunsmoke" for several years in the '60s.

by Anonymous | reply 317 | September 23, 2018 8:55 AM |
I have written this before, but after reading the two archived articles above, one in People and one in the SFO paper, I feel like repeating it.
There is no romanticizing their relationship, their wedding , the marriage and the divorce. Both of them are deeply flawed people who each have some redeeming qualities. Burt is a loyal and generous friend to those he loves(all his male buddies) and Loni--well there must be something he liked about her.
Burt had a horrendous drug problem. Not heroin or cocaine, but all prescription drugs. It wasn't quite Elvis level addiction to pills, but it was enough to completely control his life. Forget all the bullshit stories about TMJ, thrown chairs and the like. All pill freaks(including me at one time) have excuses up the wazoo and we are great at making them seem very believable.. Burt like everyone who lives on pills, he was using in order to kill the constant emotional pain. What was the source of the pain? There were several reasons for him feeling the need to quash the constant aching.= and emptiness.
His dad, Big Burt, was a very handsome and well liked man. He was very tall and striking--a veritable Marlboro Man with his cowboy boots and Stetson hats. He was not the warmest of fathers to young "Buddy" as Burt was known in this area. Like many fathers, he was not one to shower Buddy with praise or outward displays of affection. And the older Buddy got, the more he craved the love and approval of his dad. He played football at FSU and did a lot of stereotypical "man's man" endeavors to please BB, but that approval never came. I want to make it clear: BB was not physically abusive to his son.
Then there is the issue of how Buddy saw himself vis a vis his sexual desires. I word it that way intentionally, because if he had been hooked up to a polygraph machine and asked, "What is your sexual orientation?" he would have said "I like girls. I am a normal, heterosexual man."
And he would pass that polygraph test too. Buddy never saw himself as a gay man, rather he was a straight man who had desires he could not understand nor control; and most of the time he just went with what he felt at the time, all the while never accepting that he might be happier in the long run with the men he loved. Again, in some sense his brokenness over his unreciprocated love for BB may have figured into this confusion. Did he crave the love and approval of men because that was missing in his relationship with his dad? Or did he deny his feeling for men because he would sooner die than disappoint BB by being "less than the man" that was BB? Either way I firmly believe that BB was the root of his pain.
Did he ever actually tell me any of that? Oh heck no. I watched, listened and observed over the years...and of course I listened to all of the people in this area who had known him for 35+ years. I could be wrong about my conclusion...but it sure does gin up with his steady decline over the years. Percodan, Halcion, every benzo known to man and speed will mess up every relationship be they heterosexual or homosexual. Hence, none of his really had a chance.
He's in peace now, and that has been a long time coming.

Lots of men of that generation grew up with emotionless fathers, and we moved on and didn't let that define us. That is not a "pain" that would drive us to pills or alcohol or the love of other men. If Burt did harbor feelings for other men, then it was the societal pressure to not be gay that drove him to his addictions.

Loni was a bitch, Gary Sandy said she used him like a man-whore, chewed him up and spit him out.

R320 But did all men of that generation had a father who was a Marlboro Man town sheriff who was the very picture of masculine perfection? That was a lot to both adore and live up to.

R290, Scotty Bowers is total trash and nothing he claims in his book is actually true.
R318, so was Burt bisexual, or was he gay and deeply closeted? Someone else posted about him being in relationships/partnerships with men and how they went to some event and everyone there knew Burt was dating some guy he came there with.
