I want Millman tonight, Nadal for the trophy.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 6, 2018 1:54 AM |
Something about Djokovic is just sooo unlikable.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 6, 2018 1:59 AM |
Very diplomatic to keep that singular, R15.

Nice, slim body and very revealing bathing suit.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 6, 2018 2:04 AM |
I kind of like Djokovic when he gets angry and testy. Who the fuck cares whether the audience likes you or not, go get the job done and that shuts them up.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 6, 2018 2:06 AM |
there is nothing to reveal.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 6, 2018 2:06 AM |
Martina Navratilova went through that for years when she dominated the WTA. No one cheered for her. She just went about her business and got the job done, but much like Djokovic, she really craved the crowd to cheer for her. I remember once she told the crowd something like, "Yes, please clap for me!"

I've always liked Navratilova. I've always cheered for her against Evert or Austin, she was the tennis of the future when these country club bitches were still playing moonballs from the baseline. I always felt that, for such a great player, arguably one of the best in history and one who really revolutionized women's tennis by bringing athleticism and power ply into it, she never got the respect she deserved.

Martina's issue she was up against America's Sweetheart as well as being an immigrant and later an open lesbian.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 6, 2018 2:25 AM |
The whole lez thing wasn't a help in those days
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 6, 2018 2:25 AM |
R24 An open lesbian for what?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 6, 2018 2:25 AM |
Well, R22, she did eventually get the love of the crowd when she was older. I remember the 1994 Wimbledon final, the crowd was cheering for her, but Conchita Martinez won. Then when she came back to the tour to play exclusively doubles, people cheered hard for her. She had earned her legend status and was treated with love from the fans. She just wished she could have had that when she was dominating the tour.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 6, 2018 2:27 AM |
Martina always came across as rather arrogant and cocky.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 6, 2018 2:29 AM |

I have a vague memory of her saying something like "I hope one day you can like me" at Wimbledon.

This is my first time seeing Millman. I like the slutty shorts, which used to be the norm. Well, the shortness was the norm, but maybe not quite that tight on the thigh and ass. Thank's Millman.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 6, 2018 2:34 AM |
Serena and Venus never got a ton of crowd support until the second half of their careers. When they were dominating in the early 2000s, many saw them as superhuman powerful and fast amazons who were unfairly beating "real women" on the tour. It was only about the last decade or so that things changed and now they are fan favorite legends.
Davenport never got much love either because her game while smooth was unathletic and she never gave much energy to the crowd.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 6, 2018 2:36 AM |
Djokovic has never been attractive to me. To narrow of a head and too thin. Not that he's ugly. I imagine a lot of DLers think he's perfect.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 6, 2018 2:37 AM |
They have a lingering shirtless player shot for once, and it it's concentration camp victim Novak?

Davenport was also chunky in her playing days.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 6, 2018 2:38 AM |
Serena in particular was not all that well liked from 2001-7 or so.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 6, 2018 2:41 AM |
Really, if Djokovic gained 20 lbs of muscle he could be hot. He's just so emaciated it's disgusting
He has new crow's feet though. He used to good skin.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 6, 2018 2:42 AM |
Damn, it was nice to have a Chris Fowler break. Now I have to listen to his inane banter.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 6, 2018 2:43 AM |
Okay, I guess Millman's shorts were riding up and clinging because he was soaked. They'e not that short and tight.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 6, 2018 2:44 AM |
Nole.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 6, 2018 2:51 AM |
Millman looks like the actor Jackie Earle Haley.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 6, 2018 2:59 AM |
I wouldn't even say that Djokovic is playing all that great tonight, 40+ unforced errors, low conversion rate on BPs (for his standards), and it's still enough to keep this match under full control. I guess Millman is back to his 55-ranked level of play.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 6, 2018 3:33 AM |
Novak isn't doing so bad in this heat....much better than Roger who crumbled like a cookie. Maybe Roger tanked deliberately.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 6, 2018 3:33 AM |
Lindsay slimmed down quite a bit toward the latter part of her career. She was never a great mover, but it helped.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 6, 2018 3:34 AM |
R48, I'm not Federer's biggest fan, but I can't imagine he would ever tank a match. He's 37; he's just not consistent any more.
Millman is showing a lot of fight.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 6, 2018 3:36 AM |
[quote] Maybe Roger tanked deliberately.
I read an article somewhere suggesting that, perhaps, Roger's plan to reduce his schedule may not have a positive effect in the long run. Even if he were not a dominant factor on clay courts, there would be more continuity and matches under his belt. In the end, he faltered at the two places for which all that supposed energy conservation was for: Wimbledon and the US Open.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 6, 2018 3:38 AM |
No, Roger didn't look like he was even trying...that's why there were so many people thought it was match fixing or something...
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 6, 2018 3:43 AM |
Millman and Luetjen work together quite palatably.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 6, 2018 3:46 AM |
Roger is 37 and the heat ate away at him.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 6, 2018 3:47 AM |
[quote] Roger is 37 and the heat ate away at him.
Ate.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 6, 2018 3:48 AM |
I think Roger was having an off night. The heat and him not getting the start time he wanted probably didn't help. I can remember Chrissie talking about as she got older, it was harder to maintain her intensity level over several rounds, and was more prone to having days where nothing was really working.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 6, 2018 3:48 AM |
More like so many delusional people, R52. The idea that Roger Federer, of all players, would be involved in match fixing is void of both logic and evidence.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 6, 2018 3:49 AM |
Federer hasn't won the USO since 2008. He wants to win this again before he retires. No way would he tank
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 6, 2018 3:52 AM |
Good regroup from Djokovic after letting the time violation calls get to him. Let's see if he can serve it out.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 6, 2018 3:53 AM |
Match fixing is a very serious offence as far as ITF is concerned. No way Federer would risk tarnishing his legacy by doing that.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 6, 2018 3:54 AM |
Damn, I was hoping the Aussie would win. Novak is too good.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 6, 2018 3:57 AM |
Now, i'm rooting for Rafa.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 6, 2018 3:58 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 6, 2018 3:59 AM |
In the International Tennis Federation, matching fixing offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Tomic Fixing Unit.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 6, 2018 4:01 AM |
People did not like Monica Seles either for the grunting and unorthodox game — until she was stabbed and came back and everyone loved her. A shame really.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 6, 2018 4:17 AM |
Actually correction - they liked her when she was 15/16 as the challenger. They didn’t like her when she was dominant
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 6, 2018 4:18 AM |
This is really a distraction. We should be focusing on the good things dems are doing, doing pieces on up and coming dems. instead, just more BS about this cunt. i'm so sick of this. They love the chaos. The media loves it. They are getting more clicks on their pages. They are making money, they love Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 6, 2018 4:26 AM |
Even after Monica came back people attacked her. Anyone remember people calling her "hag with a frying pan?"
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 6, 2018 5:03 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 6, 2018 5:33 AM |
The industry people, including media were totally cunty to her. Like any of them ever knew what it was like to go through that. This was before 9/11, and before the MCI every 12hrs we have now. And it happened on the court, FFS.

Wow Novak has a really long neck. Team Rafa or Delpo for the win.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 6, 2018 1:54 PM |
Evert went through crowd hatred after she and Connors were sweetheart Wimbledon champs and didn't get back public support until she lost the 79 USO final to Austin. She got a standing o as runner up because she always accepted defeat as graciously as she did victory. Navratilova was an obnoxious winner/loser for most of her career, even as she was the most entertaining and daring player ever. Crowds are fickle.

R49: LIndsay became a threat for top players when she lost some weight. She was not fast, but she was way faster than before and that made a big difference
R68: Seles was liked when she started, when she was the teen defying Stefii's throne. But once she did the job, everything that people liked in her (the unorthodox game, the grunting) suddenly became annoying. Not that it matters because she was very dominant during that period.
Federer simply had an off day. He is 37, he can't be the dominant player anymore, he just needs to rely to have two fantastics wins and win in all. In my opinion if he is healthy he will have chances but he won't be the favourite (and even less if the younger generation starts to rise the level, something that'll happen sooner or later). The heat made him more vulnerable, and Millman trust in his posibilities (something a lot of players are unable to do)
by Anonymous | reply 85 | September 6, 2018 7:03 PM |
Kubot/Melo into the final. In the penultime game Jaziri served on Albot's head. Literally

by Anonymous | reply 87 | September 6, 2018 7:05 PM |
He looks more muscular and athletic there
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 6, 2018 7:09 PM |
By the way there are a lot of articles here in Spain about how rude was the audience of CSN-Keys match, and say they were totally disrespectful to the players making noise (the fact that one crowd is compared negatively with the RG crowd here in Spain is a lot)
by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 6, 2018 7:14 PM |
SO much hotter, R87.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | September 6, 2018 9:06 PM |
R88 and r90, when Djokovic had that more muscular body in 2011, he won the Aussie Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open, and he also made it to the semis at the French.

love James Blake. He's intelligent and good-looking. 1 of the hardest forehands on tour, probably only less powerful than Fernando Gonzalez'. It's a shame he couldn't have won any big titles but at least he cracked the top 10. Hopefully the younger male American generation of tennis players will be as intelligent and thoughtful as he is when it comes to respecting and caring about other people
by Anonymous | reply 94 | September 6, 2018 11:17 PM |
There's something about Sevastova. I love her personality.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | September 6, 2018 11:24 PM |
The Seles story is so tragic. She was on her way to being one of the best, having won seven of eight grand slams before the stabbing. And almost no mention of her from any commentator. Didn’t she win 3 us opens?
by Anonymous | reply 96 | September 6, 2018 11:28 PM |
Serena not moving well again. Sevestova could take this.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | September 6, 2018 11:28 PM |
Seles won the US Open twice and would've been the dominant women's player of the 90s if she hadn't been stabbed. She had Graf's number.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | September 6, 2018 11:33 PM |
Don’t want no short, short man...
by Anonymous | reply 99 | September 6, 2018 11:33 PM |
I agree, R96. And Seles was really the one who ushered in the modern power game off both sides. As her opponents used to say, there was no reprieve and no real weak side. The only way to get a break from her power was to make her run wide so she'd have to let go of her two-handed grips, but that was hard to do as she got the jump on the first ball. She was the first to really do first-strike tennis.
She was only getting better, too, when she got stabbed. She was never the same player mentally after the stabbing. She lost that laser focus. Her getting stabbed changed the course of tennis history.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | September 6, 2018 11:35 PM |
And emphasized what a cold, opportunistic, tunnel-visioned pragmatist Graf is.

Cicak is the worst umpire I've ever seen. She was so wrong about that serve call on the first point of game 3 and has now handed Serena the lead. Sevastova should be ahead 4-2.

by Anonymous | reply 125 | September 7, 2018 12:39 AM |
I'm telling you that call to start game 4 of the first set changed everything. Sevastova would've maintained the lead if not for that call. Someone should check Cicak's finances and those of people close to her. Methinks she is on Richard's payroll.
When was the last time Eva Asderaki officiated one of Serena's matches? I can't remember. Did Serena get her blacklisted. If so, that's absolute bullshit. She's one of the better umps on tour.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | September 7, 2018 12:45 AM |
Yes R126, one point completely explains how Sevastova failed to win 1 of the final 13 games. If you're so weak-minded that you let 1 point decide the entire match, maybe you should hang up your racket.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | September 7, 2018 12:47 AM |

Marija screwed up an identical call in Azarenka's 2nd or 3rd round match. Vika hit an ace that Marija overruled. When Vika questioned it, Marija pointed to the court and said, "I can see the mark from here." Vika challenged anyway...THE BALL WAS COMPLETELY THROUGH THE LINE. Cicak is terrible. She should be working nothing higher than Tier 3 tournaments.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 7, 2018 12:50 AM |
Everyone knows that Sevastova is a mess mentally. That's why it was so important to maintain the lead. She would've fought much harder from ahead.
Come on, how many times have we seen WTA players lose a close set and completely go away? It's probably a 1/3 of the matches overall. Sad!

by Anonymous | reply 137 | September 7, 2018 1:45 AM |
Sloane would have been a much more entertaining and tougher matchup for Serena. It's a shame she was sick on Tuesday and low energy. Serena was smart tonight by coming in a lot and keeping the points short. No need to mess around with Sevastova's crafty long points.
Keys started off well tonight but has gone flat and Osaka has cruised after the first few games
by Anonymous | reply 138 | September 7, 2018 1:46 AM |
Sascha Baijin is still hot. I bet Patrick Mouratoglou was jealous. He is rumored to have been the reason why Serena's not working with Sascha anymore. He's done wonders with Naomi this year.
Naomi's trainer or hitting partner is hot too. They haven't named him yet though
by Anonymous | reply 139 | September 7, 2018 1:50 AM |

he did say Sascha was living next door to Serena when he was with her.

Keys had countless chances throughout the match to break but was too flat. Osaka had more shape on the ball and accepted Keys' donations.
So Serena and Osaka go from meeting in the first round of Miami to the USO final. Not much more of a difference than that.
Now the media will focus on Sascha
by Anonymous | reply 156 | September 7, 2018 2:24 AM |
So Naomi could potentially be the first Japanese and the first Retard to win a Slam.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | September 7, 2018 2:26 AM |
lmao Osaka shading Keys. "The whole time I was thinking I just really want to play Serena" that was her answer to how she saved all 13 break points
but then Osaka said Keys is a really great player and this was of course the first time she beat her

Osaka is just a silly little girl, but she's acting like she's 12 rather than 20. Bet during her match with Serena, she will be thinking she wants the 3 million plus pay check!

R159 Save that shit until AFTER you drub her in the final, dear! When has anyone ever said something like that about a grand slam final opponent? Ridiculous. She better not hand her the match like her sister would.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | September 7, 2018 2:42 AM |
win or lose the final, this USO is confirmation that Osaka is the real deal. She didn't just win Indian Wells and then disappear for the rest of the year. Everyone was wondering who would get through the "power section" of Osaka/Sabalenka/Keys and Naomi successfully navigated her way to the final.
The fall swing will be crucial to who gets the last few spots for the YEC tournament. There are a lot of players who could qualify right now. Only Halep is officially locked in and I'd say the last 3-4 spots are available to probably 10 different players.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | September 7, 2018 2:44 AM |
I'd rather Osaka say that she wants to play Serena rather than act afraid to play her. Naomi seems pretty confident in her game right now.

Random thoughts: 1) Sascha B has a nice thick uncut cock; 2) love Sascha’s skin color; 3) it would be interesting to see if Kei and Naomi become an item; 4) hose photoshop pics of the players can be hilarious— they just had one of Kei and it looked like his teeth were actually normal 5) is the black guy next to Naomi’s mom, Naomi’s dad? 6) Naomi’s backhand reminds me of Andrea Jaegers

I think DelPo has a fair shot against Rafa. The cool weather should help him. I'd love to see Kei pull the upset over Nole, but I'm afraid to get my hopes up. Kei would have to take his level up a notch. He's capable of it, but it doesn't happen very often.

That's a really interesting article, r178. The best-of-five-sets format (cited by Navratilova and others) might be a factor, as might be the lack of problem-solving skills (cited by Becker). But then the question becomes, why does the new generation of players like Zverev, Tsitsipas, etc. have problems with five sets when previous generation didn't, and why don't they have the problem-solving skills that previous generations had?

but why go after #NextGen and not bash the #LostGen? #NextGen has not peaked yet physically or mentally. Am I disappointed they haven't gotten a slam yet? Yes but It's Dimitrov, Raonic, Nishikori, Goffin and Thiem who deserve all the criticism. They should be at their peaks now but struggle to defeat the big 3/4/5.
BTW for the poster above who mentioned millennials...Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka are all millennials. Only Federer is generation x.

Raonic is, and I say that as a fellow Canadian, not in the same category as Thiem, Nishikori, or even Dimitrov. Take away his serve and there's very little to him.

r208 He is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, was a big personality, and has been a very active tennis commentator and impresario, business man, (bankruptcies happen to lots of successful businessmen), star in Germany, tennis personality, and successful coach with the World Number One Novak Djokovic, (taken when he was in his prime and Number One already, when you can just lose as a new coach) and father of three, he knows what he's talking about and players listen to him, he has also been an influence to many of them. He ruined his health playing, partially because of his courageous, offensive and aggressive playing, but he sure knows what he's talking about, has been very successful and people listen to him.

Mugurutha
by Anonymous | reply 218 | September 7, 2018 6:58 PM |
R197: That's not exactly an accurate question. First of all, most next gen players have an age that Novak and Roger didn't won a GS. Nadal is a different case because he was very dominant on clay from the begginning but he took quite some time on reach the final rounds of the other GS. And we are talking about three of the best of all time.
Right now Zverev is the only next gen player who is a top player. And yes, he has a problem, because he is not reaching (not remotely) the rounds he should be. And he is a top contender in every other tournamnent.
People older than Zverev, like the russians, in my opinion have the potential to be top players but i doubt they'll be dominant players. Chung had a very tough year with injuries.
The younger ones are a mystery, they are showing promise (Nadal seems to think that Shapo has a brilliant future ahead him) but they need time.
We can say that people like Dimitrov won't reach his true potential, but i think Thiem will win GS, he is more a late bloomer.
by Anonymous | reply 219 | September 7, 2018 7:07 PM |
Please, please, please anyone but Djokovic.. I can't take another tits out!
by Anonymous | reply 220 | September 7, 2018 7:13 PM |
Del Potro has had 2 full days to rest and it'll be much cooler so he really has no excuse not to at least give Nadal a tough match.
by Anonymous | reply 221 | September 7, 2018 7:16 PM |
R219, do you think Djokovic used to be a clay court specialist?
by Anonymous | reply 222 | September 7, 2018 7:18 PM |
I take your point, r219, but Djokovic had already at least made it to a quarterfinal and two semis of a GS when he was 20, and Federer had made it to two quarterfinals of a GS when he was 19. But, as you say, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal are among the all-time greats so it's unfair to compare them to any new generation. Still, I think it's quite notable that players like Zverev , Tsitsipas, etc. can't seem to break through on the big stage.
by Anonymous | reply 223 | September 7, 2018 7:29 PM |
R222: No, even he was the only player able to dominate Nadal on the clay season (even failing at Roland Garros) he is not (and not was) better on clay than he was on hard courts. For a lot of players early clay results are better than in other surfaces because the big servers are way more vulnerable on clay
R223: You are right, it's unfair compare young players with easily the best generation in tennis ever (even Murray and Wawrinka have more GS than the dominant players of other eras). And it's true that young players seem unable to translate the great results they have on atp tournaments (even the bigger ones) into GS success (or at least reaching the last rounds). But i think only Zverev could be held responsible for that. He is a top player and definitevely he should be doing better. And it can become a burden if he doesn't solve it in a near future (that interview he gave makes me think he needs to find a balance between his tennis career and his live or this won't be solved soon). The others are simply too young or starting to make themselves a name.
Sometimes having an amazing result at a GS could be even negative if it puts too much pressure on someone who is not ready

rafa looks like a monkey
by Anonymous | reply 280 | September 7, 2018 9:53 PM |
so just to be clear, if you are returning serve and you hit in the net or out, that's an error. It's only a service winner if you touch the ball but it keeps going past you. An ace means you didn't even make contact with the ball
by Anonymous | reply 281 | September 7, 2018 9:53 PM |
omg, alec baldwin is a fucking idiot. He said the best thing for fans is you can be done 6-0, 6-0. 6-0 and come back to win the match?!
by Anonymous | reply 282 | September 7, 2018 9:54 PM |
👍🏽, r281.
BTW, did you know Serena has had a baby?
by Anonymous | reply 283 | September 7, 2018 9:55 PM |
And while we're on the subject, when they report the winners and unforced errors for a match, the winners don't include aces or service winners, right?
by Anonymous | reply 284 | September 7, 2018 9:57 PM |
You can just tell that something's off with Nadal today. Normally, I'd still give him an edge the longer the match goes, but I'm not so sure about this match, given the signs.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | September 7, 2018 9:57 PM |
So what’s an “unreturnable winner”?
by Anonymous | reply 286 | September 7, 2018 9:57 PM |
A lot of his balls are landing around the service line, which is very unusual.

Damn, wouldn't you be pissed off if you spent thousands for this match and rafa retires due to injury?
by Anonymous | reply 291 | September 7, 2018 10:00 PM |
Delpo breaks, then he hits two shitty errors. Down 0-30.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | September 7, 2018 10:00 PM |
I've not heard the term "unreturnable winner," r286. By definition, I should think that all winners are unreturnable.

by Anonymous | reply 305 | September 7, 2018 10:12 PM |
R293, “unreturnable winner” is, strictly speaking, nothing other than a tautology. Serves can be aces or winners (receiver makes no contact with the ball or nicks it as it goes past, respectively). Winners are, by definition, always “clean”, i.e. the opponent cannot make contact with the ball with their racquet. Errors, though, can be termed “unforced” or “forced”—“unforced” if the mistake comes off a relatively simple shot; forced, e.g., if the opponent’s shot is so good that anything other than an error would be seen as miraculous. These latter two are very often subjective calls—not everyone recording stats will necessarily have the same number of forced and unforced errors for the same match.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | September 7, 2018 10:13 PM |
Nadal is "extremely injured." (i.e., he's losing).
by Anonymous | reply 307 | September 7, 2018 10:14 PM |
Hopefully Delpo can beat Djokovic in the final.
by Anonymous | reply 308 | September 7, 2018 10:15 PM |
this is ridicolous, rafal says: l i am injured thats why you re winning
by Anonymous | reply 309 | September 7, 2018 10:16 PM |
Nadal’s being a bit of a cunt now. If he can’t be competitive he should just shake hands and get off the court.

by Anonymous | reply 331 | September 7, 2018 10:51 PM |
That is his injury. The problem can show up even when you play just a few hours, you never know. That Thiem match affected it for sure.

Yes, that's true. Continue playing to worsen an injury and lose out on future earnings, or call it a day now, because playing injured, he knows won't be able to win today.
It's a business.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | September 7, 2018 11:51 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 348 | September 8, 2018 12:10 AM |
I can't stand Nadal, but I don't believe for a minute that he retired on purpose. He is a beast and always tries. If it is his knee, which it appeared to be, there's no way you can really move.

R100 that's still such a classic match. Amazing we were watching the future of tennis and then both careers went to such an unfortunate turn. One through no fault oh her own and the other a victim of herself. It's an interesting footnote of that era.

by Anonymous | reply 384 | September 8, 2018 8:19 AM |
[quote]I like Novak. I don't know of many other players who so desperately want the love of the crowd as he. Martina could be that way as well.
Martina is a good comparison. Ultimately the crowds came to support her once she started losing regularly to Steffi, and became "the old player nearing retirement". Azarenka also a good comparison.
For men, Lendl, to a lesser degree. He wanted to be loved, but didn't seem to try as hard as Djokovic to earn it.
The funny thing is, there was some love for Djokovic when he first appeared on the scene, and would do impressions of the other players' service motions, like McEnroe, Sharapova, etc. But once he started competing and pushing Federer and Nadal, forget it. Federer fans hated him, and Nadal fans hated him, and that probably accounts for 80-90% of tennis fans right there. He also had some problems with retirements, which the fans didn't like.
I've mentioned here before, I was pretty neutral on him until 2011, when he started dominating. I just loved the fact that there was a player who refused to let the ATP become the Roger and Rafa show. That someone took themselves seriously enough to improve his fitness, improve some technical flaws (like his serve), improve his mental approach to the game. If that had been, say, Berdych, instead of Djokovic, I would have supported him too. In my opinion, that's what has been missing from the game the last few years, no one is pushing the top players.
I shudder to think if the last eight years had continued to be the Roger-Rafa show. Nothing against those two players personally, I don't dislike either guy. But their fans can be incredibly rude (cheering for opponents double faults, and such). And the absolute tongue-bath both receive from the tennis media is nauseating. Yeah, Djokovic can be cringe-worthy trying to score crowd support. But I'll always love him for forcing the fans and media to acknowledge there are players besides Rafa and Roger, and pushing the commentators to actually do their job instead of fanboy-ing in the commentary box.

by Anonymous | reply 387 | September 8, 2018 10:14 AM |
There wasn’t a minute of that match where it felt like Kei had any chance. He’s a level below the top guys.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | September 8, 2018 10:31 AM |
I completely agree with r385 with respect to Djokovic. I give Novak tons of credit for not settling for table scraps while all the other players seemed content to let Federer and Nadal rule the ATP. Novak really committed himself 100% to becoming the absolute best tennis player he could become in order to challenge those two. And, guess what, Djokovic now has a winning record against both Federer (24-22) and Nadal (27-25). So, yeah, I have the utmost respect for Djokovic the athlete. As for Djokovic the person, yeah, I find his ingratiating behavior annoying, but neither do I like Federer's prissiness or Nadal's OCD ways.
by Anonymous | reply 389 | September 8, 2018 11:47 AM |
R338: Oh come on, let's be serious, Nadal was inviting to holidays every year to a big group of friends, and that was when he was way younger. He has no money problems to think if he should retire or not. He was clearly injured and he was going to lose anyway, he did the right thing.
Delpo has the game to defeat anyone, and i wish he could pull a surprise like he did in his final against Federer, but Novak is the favourite

r385:
[quote]I shudder to think if the last eight years had continued to be the Roger-Rafa show. Nothing against those two players personally, I don't dislike either guy. But their fans can be incredibly rude (cheering for opponents double faults, and such).
I love Djokovic's tennis when he's on (and I'm not a fan of Nadal's style), but I've been to so many Djokovic matches (including a couple versus Nadal) where I've been driven to distraction by Djokovic's fans (usually Serbs living and working in the country hosting the tournament) who not only incessantly chant "No-le! No-le! No-le!" between sets, between games, between points, and, in the tighter end of a set, as the opponent is about to serve, but also don't disdain an applause or two after his opponent's first-serve fault and a resounding applause after a double fault. I can't say that what you're referring to is limited to Nadal and/or Federer fans—it's common among all fans of any player when they become fanaticised and when the chair umpire lets them get away with it.
by Anonymous | reply 391 | September 8, 2018 12:54 PM |

And Serena almost DIED YESTERDAY when she crossed the street in Manhattan, and an Uber Driver drove past that very spot NOT EVEN 20 SECONDS LATER. by Anonymous | reply 411 | September 8, 2018 6:11 PM |
R409: That's not exactly true. Federer never plays with the crowd against him, he even avoided Davis Cup for years, and when he wanted to win it he did it because Wawrinka was there to save the day.
Rafa had the french crowd against him some times, specially when he played against french players, but that's nothing new for spanish players.
For some reason Djokovic is not loved that way. He was loved when he started, he was seen like funny player but then he rose his level and started to beat Fed and Rafa and things changed.
Yes he had an annoying serbian fans who are not exactly the most respectful ones, but they are a minority
by Anonymous | reply 412 | September 8, 2018 6:14 PM |
Oh boohoo, r412. Honestly, let it go. If you really insist, we’ll agree with you that Nadal’s and Federer’s fans are the most obnoxious in the world, and that Djokovic’s fans are the tennis equivalent of concerto attendees from Belle Époque Vienna..
But I’m telling you, that ain’t true. I’ve been there; I’ve heard them.
by Anonymous | reply 413 | September 8, 2018 6:31 PM |
But r412 has a point in that I can't remember a single match when the crowd was against Federer. I'm trying to remember how the crowd was in 2001 when Federer (the newcomer) beat Sampras (the veteran) at Wimbledon. Was the crowd more for Sampras or Federer? Anybody remember?
by Anonymous | reply 414 | September 8, 2018 6:51 PM |
R413: I know my english is bad, but not as bad as your reading comprehension. The serbian crowd is annoying and disrespectful but they are a small bunch in most tournaments.
We get a prime example in this US Open of how people react to Roger, in any other circumstance a crowd would cheer for the underdog, but not for Millman, not against Roger. And it's lucky that Roger is a polite player, other would use that against his rivals (i know that generally only happens on Davis Cup).
R414 I doubt people cheered for Sampras in that match. Sampras was respected as a great player but he was not a crowd pleaser. People were more into Agassi. I think in the last 25 years, Roger is probably the player with more devoted fans. It's understable, when he is on his tennis is a master piece. Nadal on the other hand appeal to people who see the sport as a fight, and he fights till the last point

By the way Lopatetskaya defeated Cory Gauff (again) on the junior girls qtr. People say it was a great match between two great young players (Dasha is 15, Cory 14)
Hopefully both toned down the drama that it was their Les petits as semifinal. Dasha was crying all the time (even when she was winning)

Sampras was very inconsistent toward the end of his career, getting bounced in the first or second round of the French and Wimbledon.
by Anonymous | reply 420 | September 8, 2018 7:21 PM |
R420: The truth is Federer was very inconsistent back then too. He was able to get great victories against top players (i remember him destroying Marat Safin on clay) but he was unable to keep that level for long time. His victory against Sampras was considered a big surprise back then, maybe because at that moment Federer just looked like a lot of other talented players that ended underachieving due to their mentality. Fortunately for Roger he was able to rise his level soon

Don't tell Rena's Army but Kim C. popped out a giant baby and won the US Open in her first slam back. She only played two tournaments prior to the US Open and didn't need any special seeding.

I love how much the press and media are talking about Serena’s baby. For twenty plus years, she and her sister have had to shovel through all sorts of shit about how Venus and Serena were actually men. “They’re the Williams brothers.” Anything and everything said to diminish and demean them.
So now that Serena has gotten pregnant and given birth, we get to marvel at every fucking detail of it. It’s making those same haters miserable but guess what? They’ve always been miserable. Nothing has changed.

R385 and R389, I'm with both of you. Mad respect for what Djokovic did starting in 2011. He decided he no longer wanted to be the bridesmaid to Nadal and Federer. I think it started at the 2010 US Open. Djokovic didn't play well in that final against Nadal and it motivated him to improve. Then he had that remarkable year in 2011. In 2012 it was a bit odd, as he started the year with a tough 5 set victory over Nadal at the Aussie Open. Then he lost to Nadal in the final of the French, to Federer in the semis of Wimbledon, and to Murray in the final of the US Open. I always thought in 2012 he was feeling the pressure of to defend that stellar 2011 season.
In 2013 he won the Aussie Open once again, beating Murray in the final. Then he lost that heartbreaker to Nadal in the semis of the French 9-7 in the 5th. He really should have won that match and he knew it, and I think it affected the rest of his year. He got to the Wimbledon final but lost to Murray, then finished the year with a disappointing effort against Nadal in the US Open final.
In 2014, he lost to a red-hot Stan Wawrinka in the quarters of the Aussie Open, to Nadal yet again at the French, which was becoming a mental block for him, but he beat Federer in 5 sets for the Wimbledon title, then lost to Nishikori at the semis of the US Open. In 2015 he reasserted his dominance, taking the Aussie, Wimbledon, and US Open titles. His big disappointment that year was taking Nadal out of the French quarters but losing yet again to a red-hot Wawrinka in the French final.
In 2016, he continued to dominate in the first half, taking the Aussie Open title yet again, then finally taking the French title over Murray, who was becoming his main rival on the tour. He lost to Querry in the 3rd round of Wimbledon, but got back to the US Open final where a once-again red-hot Wawrinka was waiting for him and took him down. Amazing how over the years Stan just pops up playing unbelievable tennis to take the odd Slam. Then we know about his injury woes until the 2018 Wimbledon title.
Between 2011 and mid-2016, he won 11 Slams. Not as good as Federer's 14 Slam run from 2004 to 2009, but still a remarkable achievement.

“Code violation. Coaching. Mrs Serena Williams.” In high dudgeon, Mrs Serena Williams moves to the chair umpire. “I don’t cheat. Just so you know?” Cut to slow-mo of Mouratoglou gesticulating either that he wanted to take her from behind or that she has to start moving in to the net.
by Anonymous | reply 511 | September 8, 2018 9:08 PM |
Mouratoglou gives Serena a sign to go into the net. The umpire issues a warning. Fowler: Was he right to warn her? Mary Joe: "There wasn't much there."
Such brave commentary!
by Anonymous | reply 512 | September 8, 2018 9:09 PM |
Yeah R506 first they said the warning from the umpire was out of line them she said she's following her coach by coming to the net. Ugh...they have been kissing Serena's ass for the last 2 weeks. Go Naomi!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 576 | September 8, 2018 9:33 PM |
She can't be allowed to say what the fuck she wants. She needs to apologize to him! She keeps saying this is not fair! lots of men do this and nothing happens.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | September 8, 2018 9:33 PM |
Wow. this is some ugly Drama. Serena should have let it go and played on. Instead she's drawn it out to this ridiculous level.
by Anonymous | reply 578 | September 8, 2018 9:33 PM |
They should show Patrick giving the hand signals on the Jumbotron
by Anonymous | reply 579 | September 8, 2018 9:34 PM |
SUCH. A. CHEAT.
by Anonymous | reply 580 | September 8, 2018 9:34 PM |
She's too stupid, she keeps thinking she can say what the fuck she wants and gets away with it.
by Anonymous | reply 581 | September 8, 2018 9:34 PM |
Now I REALLY HOPE Naomi wins
by Anonymous | reply 582 | September 8, 2018 9:34 PM |
Now, she's pulling the woman card. It has nothing to do with being a woman, all to do for pulling this same shit twice in the US Open final.
by Anonymous | reply 583 | September 8, 2018 9:34 PM |
PLAYING THE WOMAN CARD!
by Anonymous | reply 584 | September 8, 2018 9:34 PM |
Fuck Serena; she's not winning so she's having a fit. GO NAOMI.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | September 8, 2018 9:34 PM |
This is shitty - she's trying to disrupt Osaka.
by Anonymous | reply 586 | September 8, 2018 9:35 PM |
I'm a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 587 | September 8, 2018 9:35 PM |
Why does this always happen to MEEEEEE!!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 588 | September 8, 2018 9:36 PM |
This is messed up. this taints the win, even if Naomi wins.
by Anonymous | reply 589 | September 8, 2018 9:36 PM |
I feel bad for Naomi. This isn't her drama, but she's stuck in the middle of it.
by Anonymous | reply 590 | September 8, 2018 9:36 PM |
Why is anyone cheering for her?
by Anonymous | reply 591 | September 8, 2018 9:36 PM |
This is so fucking unfair to Osaka
by Anonymous | reply 592 | September 8, 2018 9:36 PM |
Now I’m rooting for Serena.
by Anonymous | reply 593 | September 8, 2018 9:36 PM |

THROW HER OFF THE COURT! GAME OVER! No other player would fell so entitled as to ream everyone out.
by Anonymous | reply 599 | September 8, 2018 9:38 PM |
Serena will shut her mouth once she sees all the gifs of Patrick so obviously coaching her.

by Anonymous | reply 605 | September 8, 2018 9:42 PM |
How much do you think they'll fine Serena for this display?
by Anonymous | reply 606 | September 8, 2018 9:42 PM |
And Osaka is the new US Open champion. I really like her game and i think this is the first of many GS for her
by Anonymous | reply 607 | September 8, 2018 9:42 PM |
It's all the coach's fault, if he didn't coach her, this wouldn't have happened!
by Anonymous | reply 608 | September 8, 2018 9:42 PM |
Keep waking Serena, and hand in your resignation at the front desk.
by Anonymous | reply 609 | September 8, 2018 9:43 PM |
She is 3.4 million dollars richer!!!
by Anonymous | reply 610 | September 8, 2018 9:43 PM |
Hope Serena doesn't shit all over the trophy presentation. Regardless of the drama, Serena was losing this match.
by Anonymous | reply 611 | September 8, 2018 9:43 PM |
This is why Serena is so hated. Roid rage mixed with borderline personality disorder. I'm sick of her and so glad she lost.
by Anonymous | reply 612 | September 8, 2018 9:43 PM |
Her dad is there but not in the box. Her mommy is hugging her
by Anonymous | reply 613 | September 8, 2018 9:44 PM |
Patrick just admitted he was coaching! and he said sascha was coaching too.
by Anonymous | reply 614 | September 8, 2018 9:45 PM |
Huge props to Naomi for holding it together!
by Anonymous | reply 615 | September 8, 2018 9:45 PM |
Apparently Serena was the only woman on the court (along with being the only mother in the world).
by Anonymous | reply 616 | September 8, 2018 9:50 PM |
look at the way serena is posing on stage lol
by Anonymous | reply 617 | September 8, 2018 9:53 PM |
The crowd is booing. this is so bad for naomi. she is crying.
by Anonymous | reply 618 | September 8, 2018 9:54 PM |
This is so unfair to naomi!!!!!!!!!! FUCK YOU SERENA!
by Anonymous | reply 619 | September 8, 2018 9:54 PM |
Disgusting! Booing at Naomi's celebration. Disgusting.
by Anonymous | reply 620 | September 8, 2018 9:54 PM |
The crowd is trash for booing during Osaka's moment. Blame Serena not the tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 621 | September 8, 2018 9:55 PM |
Serena should have said that Naomi would've won anyway.....
by Anonymous | reply 622 | September 8, 2018 9:59 PM |
The guy is asking such stupid questions!!!
by Anonymous | reply 623 | September 8, 2018 10:00 PM |
Why doesn't she answer the questions? She is stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 624 | September 8, 2018 10:01 PM |
Serena needs to be shrouded for not accepting responsibility for this debacle.
by Anonymous | reply 625 | September 8, 2018 10:04 PM |
Fuck Serena. Many people are bringing up roid rage lol!!!
by Anonymous | reply 626 | September 8, 2018 10:05 PM |
They are showing more of Serena's rants on TV. How did she expect to get away with talking to the umpire like that??
by Anonymous | reply 627 | September 8, 2018 10:07 PM |
And the female commentator is saying Serena might not have known...fucking BS...she has been playing for decades, she knows the fucking rules!!!
by Anonymous | reply 628 | September 8, 2018 10:08 PM |
Naomi is so sweet and respectful. She deserves to be given respect and her due as champion.
by Anonymous | reply 629 | September 8, 2018 10:08 PM |
Osaka didn't say she was proud to be first winner from Japan when asked the question. WTF?
by Anonymous | reply 630 | September 8, 2018 10:11 PM |
Notice the 'head nod' right at the end of Patrick's coaching, as if to confirm that his message has been received.
by Anonymous | reply 631 | September 8, 2018 10:12 PM |
Quite possibly the biggest "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" moment in sports history.
by Anonymous | reply 632 | September 8, 2018 10:21 PM |
Does anyone know whether Serena has any children?
by Anonymous | reply 633 | September 8, 2018 10:29 PM |
Why yes r633, Serena was gracious enough to take time out of the US One Women's Final to let the umpire know that she has a daughter!
by Anonymous | reply 634 | September 8, 2018 10:33 PM |
