Lucas Hedges: “My sexuality is on a spectrum”

Once, in third grade, [Lucas] Hedges told [his mother] he had a crush on a boy at day camp. “I felt terrible about it,” he says. “I remember her being very comforting, and she understood that something was distressing me, and she said, ‘You don’t have to go back to camp today.’ ” He pauses. “I’m sorry, I can’t help but feel a little self-conscious, only because I’m talking to you and the world at the same time.”

Hedges knows that since he’s starring in Boy Erased, people will ask him about his own sexuality. “I owe it to this part to speak as honestly as possible,” he says. “In the early stages of my life, some of the people I was most infatuated with were my closest male friends. That was the case through high school, and I think I was always aware that while for the most part I was attracted to women, I existed on a spectrum.”

He remembers a sixth-grade health teacher describing sexuality as a broad range where many people may fall in some difficult-to-define space between straight and gay. “I felt ashamed that I wasn’t 100 percent, because it was clear that one side of sexuality presents issues, and the other doesn’t as much,” he says. “I recognize myself as existing on that spectrum: Not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual.”

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

HE'S GAY, GAAAAYYY!!

by Anonymousreply 1September 5, 2018 9:40 PM

To me it reads like a straight man who's about to appear in a high-profile gay film role, and is preemptively trying to inoculate himself against the predictable SJW backlash.

by Anonymousreply 2September 5, 2018 9:42 PM

He runs the gamut of sexuality from Gay to B.

by Anonymousreply 3September 5, 2018 9:43 PM

I dont understand how or why, I as a gay person am supposed to give one single flying fuck about this pretentious verbiage. Like, you have said a whole of of shit without saying anything. Not straight, not gay, not bisexual? Only thing left is asexual. Like wtf. Fuck off you twat.

by Anonymousreply 4September 5, 2018 9:53 PM

I appreciate what he said, and see no reason to flame him. I think what he's saying is he's young, he has been attracted to males, and, although he can't ever rule out the possibility of being attracted to me, he is more attracted to women. It's an honest answer, and is probably the truth for a lot of guys who consider themselves to be straight, are not actively attractive to men, yet wouldn't rule out the potential. Good for him.

by Anonymousreply 5September 5, 2018 9:57 PM

I earned the gay status and own it. Fuck the "spectrum".

by Anonymousreply 6September 5, 2018 9:58 PM

R2 nails it.

by Anonymousreply 7September 5, 2018 9:59 PM

[quote]he is more attracted to women

PFFFFFTTTTT

[quote] It's an honest answer,

You have no way to know that it is an honest answer - you can't get inside his mind and know that he means what he said. We can make guesses based on his behavior, and as has been discussed here, he appears to be nothing but gay.

[quote] and is probably the truth for a lot of guys who consider themselves to be straight, are not actively attractive to men, yet wouldn't rule out the potential.

What does that even mean? What is the difference between not being "actively" attracted to men, or being not attracted at all?

by Anonymousreply 8September 5, 2018 10:05 PM

R5 And that would be all fine and dandy if we, actual gay people, dont have to celebrate' his essentially heterosexuality. Thats the part that bothers me. This isnt a coming out. I have no connection to someone who had a crush on a boys as a kid but has no interest in perusing relationships with men. All my crushes as a child were on girls; Im still gay. I just hate how 'queer' media tries to make us celebrate this bullshit, it has nothing to do with me. Mr Hedges is not a part of my community.

by Anonymousreply 9September 5, 2018 10:05 PM

He goes as far as admitting that most of his youthful crushes were homosexual. I doubt this is true of many heterosexual, or even heteroflexible, men.

by Anonymousreply 10September 5, 2018 10:07 PM

He had some ambiguous "crushes" on guys when he was a kid. Okay...?

He gives no indication that he has ever been sexual with men or even has any real interest in being sexual with men.

I mean there is a whole term for guys having non-sexual crushes on other guys, you aren't the first person to have mancrushes Luke.

by Anonymousreply 11September 5, 2018 10:10 PM

He looks like he's ON the spectrum!

by Anonymousreply 12September 5, 2018 10:11 PM

i so loathe that term 'spectrum' as much as 'on the spectrum'

can't you people get on something else for a change?????

something fun? different??

by Anonymousreply 13September 5, 2018 10:12 PM

Come up with something, R13, and then get back to us.

by Anonymousreply 14September 5, 2018 10:12 PM

R13 is on the spectrum!

by Anonymousreply 15September 5, 2018 10:13 PM

Let's get down to brass tacks, can I fuck him bareback or not?

by Anonymousreply 16September 5, 2018 10:13 PM

With that face, he'd need a spectrum, wouldn't he?

by Anonymousreply 17September 5, 2018 11:41 PM

I love him. He’s the Timmy Chalamet of 2018, except we’re almost positive he sucks dick.

by Anonymousreply 18September 5, 2018 11:44 PM

r13 One cock, two cock, three cock, blue cock.

by Anonymousreply 19September 6, 2018 12:04 AM

R9, so you're not human? That isn't "community" enough for you?

by Anonymousreply 20September 6, 2018 12:05 AM

R18 I agree. He indirectly admits to sucking some dick, no shame in that.

by Anonymousreply 21September 6, 2018 12:09 AM

It's a misquote, he actually said " My sexuality is in my rectum "

by Anonymousreply 22September 6, 2018 12:12 AM

"I earned the gay status and own it. Fuck the "spectrum"."

That's nice. But guess what. I "earned" mine as well. I've been gay bashed. I've had AIDS for decades. and watched many people I loved and some I didn't even know, die from it. I've marched and protested, been denied jobs because of it. And at the ripe old age of 57 realized I'm not gay.

I'm non-binary. Cue the exploding heads from the anti-trans brigade.

So I appreciate when anyone says their sexuality is on a spectrum. Especially when it's someone young with their career ahead of them. It makes a refreshing break from all the closet cases who still refuse to come out because of their "career."

Do you remember the Joe Jackson. The English one, not the abusive father. He was singing and performing songs about the sexual spectrum since the late 70's. And I was a fan. (Especially since the music seemed gay to me back then and there were precious few non-straight pieces of pop culture floating around).

Because of what gay men, lesbians, women and the rest of us have been doing for decades, statements like this one made by this guy are possible.

The progress we, and I'm including you, have made--why else have we done it? I mean, yes for ourselves. But also so the people who follow won't have it that hard.

Don't deny this guy the progress you have made. Don't deny him the progress he's made and will make.

by Anonymousreply 23September 6, 2018 12:21 AM

we all knew, gurl

by Anonymousreply 24September 6, 2018 12:26 AM

I forgot to add the most important part, the progress the younger generation made: it's helped me and I'm a wizened old fart.

by Anonymousreply 25September 6, 2018 12:27 AM

Is he a top or a bottom?

by Anonymousreply 26September 6, 2018 12:28 AM

R20 the point went over your head. Gay community, not some 'human' community you fuckwitt.

by Anonymousreply 27September 6, 2018 12:42 AM

[quote]That's nice. But guess what. I "earned" mine as well. I've been gay bashed. I've had AIDS for decades. and watched many people I loved and some I didn't even know, die from it. r23, doesn't 'non-binary' mean 'I don't identify as male or female'? What does non-binary have to do with sexual orientation?

by Anonymousreply 28September 6, 2018 1:43 AM

r23, also, can you please explain what non-binary means to you? What makes a person non-binary other than them saying 'I'm non-binary'?

by Anonymousreply 29September 6, 2018 1:46 AM

gurl is so fucking ugly! Damn!

by Anonymousreply 30September 6, 2018 1:47 AM

For some reason, although they don’t resemble one another, he reminds me of Lord Freddie Windsor...

by Anonymousreply 31September 6, 2018 1:52 AM

R2 BINGO

by Anonymousreply 32September 6, 2018 1:53 AM

If you're not 100% straight, and you're not 100% gay, aren't you BY DEFINITION bisexual?

by Anonymousreply 33September 6, 2018 2:40 AM

Not interested enough to read between the lines, sorry.

by Anonymousreply 34September 6, 2018 2:41 AM

Nothing, R28. Different things.

by Anonymousreply 35September 6, 2018 2:41 AM

So many threads bump

by Anonymousreply 36September 6, 2018 2:42 AM

They are afraid of the world bisexual r33, it is too real, too gay.

by Anonymousreply 37September 6, 2018 2:43 AM

Why do people here are always so quick to dismiss the idea of a man attracted to both men and women? Why does it always have to be a totally gay guy vs a straight guy (who also secretly craves cock)?

by Anonymousreply 38September 6, 2018 2:43 AM

How is this relevant to Lucas r38? He said he was not bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 39September 6, 2018 2:45 AM

R8 being actively attracted to men means, for many people, actually seeking out sex with multiple men. The famous craving cock thing. If you just sort of sit back and wait to meet a guy you are hot for (and won't push away a hot girl either), DL considers you straight.

by Anonymousreply 40September 6, 2018 2:47 AM

My thexuality is thspecial!!!

by Anonymousreply 41September 6, 2018 2:47 AM

R39 Well read the thread. People are trying to label him as gay and lying or straight and confused.

by Anonymousreply 42September 6, 2018 2:47 AM

"Lucas Hedges: “My sexuality is on a spectrum”"

So, he Hedges about his sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 43September 6, 2018 2:48 AM

R27, no, I completely got it. You are the idiot. I was trying to make the point that you might want to consider a bigger tent than just the gay community. Maybe you could take a step back and have some compassion for him as a human being regardless that his self-definition doesn't meet your desired parameters.

by Anonymousreply 44September 6, 2018 2:48 AM

I completely understand someone being bisexual r42, Hedges is the one who said he was not bisexual. He is not bi or gay, just not "completely straight". Okay...

by Anonymousreply 45September 6, 2018 2:50 AM

R28 Leave zir alone, zir's hormone blockers and AZT are making zir lightheaded.

by Anonymousreply 46September 6, 2018 2:50 AM

R45 Bisexual as a label has too much baggage attached. Also some people take it as a clear 50/50 definition so they might feel like it doesn't apply if they aren't like that.

by Anonymousreply 47September 6, 2018 2:52 AM

R47 The label "Bisexual" won't exist in 25 years time.

The people who use it now will be dead. And the next generation will be inventing, crazier, stupider excuses for labels.

by Anonymousreply 48September 6, 2018 2:55 AM

Can’t he just admit he’s gay for fuck’s sake? Spectrum! Give me a fucking break

by Anonymousreply 49September 6, 2018 3:03 AM

"doesn't 'non-binary' mean 'I don't identify as male or female'? What does non-binary have to do with sexual orientation?"

It doesn't have anything to do with it. I am also on a sexual spectrum and I respect anyone who talks publicly about that. That's all. I said I was non-binary just because why not? I am posting from a country that has the concept of freedom of speech as a right. At least, theoretically so far.

And then we get the homophobe that is r41. Thanks for identifying yourself as troll, r41. I like people who don't waste my time by pretending they're not assholes.

Meanwhile this was asked "What makes a person non-binary other than them saying 'I'm non-binary'?"

Like what makes a person gay or straight other than them saying it? Like it's a fad? Is gay a fad? Is straight a fad? I know straight people act like it's the be all and end all, but they're usually Republican.

Oh, there's r46! What a coincidence!

by Anonymousreply 50September 6, 2018 3:05 AM

That would be too boring, R49.

by Anonymousreply 51September 6, 2018 3:07 AM

R48 Bc labels need to go. They only make people's lives harder. No one labels those who prefer coffee over tea or otherwise or like a bit of this and that. Labels only force you to pick a lane and make assimilation difficult.

by Anonymousreply 52September 6, 2018 3:10 AM

"Can’t he just admit he’s gay for fuck’s sake? Spectrum! Give me a fucking break"

You are being persecuted by "Spectrum!" That's the Big Marvel Villain in your life I take it?

Honey, I don't know what your Marvel Hero franchise is, but I bet you're not going to get your own movie. The best you can hope for is a Youtube skit where some gay guys decide to post a video of them all dressing up like Wonder Woman and lipsynching Beyonce, and you're the random white guy in the background.

by Anonymousreply 53September 6, 2018 3:11 AM

[quote]Bc labels need to go. They only make people's lives harder

People spent their life fighting for the right for you to have that label, but sure okay.

by Anonymousreply 54September 6, 2018 3:13 AM

I accept no label.

I am my own special creation!

by Anonymousreply 55September 6, 2018 3:18 AM

r53 The fuck you're talking about?

by Anonymousreply 56September 6, 2018 3:19 AM

R54 Not for the right to have it, but for the right to be free of the heterosexual one.

by Anonymousreply 57September 6, 2018 3:21 AM

[quote]And at the ripe old age of 57 realized I'm not gay. I'm non-binary.

r51, the reason I asked the question is because you literally wrote back-to-back sentences conflating the two issues.

[quote]Like what makes a person gay or straight other than them saying it? Like it's a fad? Is gay a fad? Is straight a fad?

I'm a homosexual, I am exclusively sexually attracted to members of my own sex. Sexual attraction can be measured by scientists using a variety of methods. So I'll return to my original questions: What makes a person non-binary other than them saying 'I'm non-binary'? What does non-binary mean to you specifically? TIA for taking the time to respond.

by Anonymousreply 58September 6, 2018 3:22 AM

So fucking sick of straight people co opting my experiences to win awards. Fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 59September 6, 2018 3:22 AM

Why bother with rubbish from a mag which calls itself "Vulture"?

This humanoid (whoever he is) belongs back with the crows and vultures on the barren beaches of Mordor.

R60 lol 😅

by Anonymousreply 62September 6, 2018 3:30 AM

[quote][R48] Bc labels need to go. They only make people's lives harder. No one labels those who prefer coffee over tea or otherwise or like a bit of this and that. Labels only force you to pick a lane and make assimilation difficult.

r52, The label for a person who prefers coffee over tea is 'one who prefers coffee over tea'. Just because it hasn't been distilled into a single word doesn't make it any less of a label. Labels are simply descriptive words. Do you think the human race should do away with all descriptive words for height, weight, nationality, ethnicity, race, colour, religion, etc.? Do you really think that's practical?

Or is it only the descriptive words for sexuality that need to be done away with? How will doing away with, for example, the label 'bisexual' change anything for those who are sexually attracted to both men and women. BTW, how does the word 'bisexual' force a person to pick a lane?

by Anonymousreply 64September 6, 2018 3:42 AM

"I'm a homosexual, I am exclusively sexually attracted to members of my own sex. Sexual attraction can be measured by scientists using a variety of methods. So I'll return to my original questions: What makes a person non-binary other than them saying 'I'm non-binary'? What does non-binary mean to you specifically? TIA for taking the time to respond."

I don't get your logic here. You think people benefit from falsely claiming themselves to be non-binary? Like there's this big non-binary industry that pays out billions of dollars to their non-binary employees? "Damn! Where is that magical industry and why am I not getting a check?" is what you're asking yourself.

Is this some kind of Oppression Olympics contest?

I don't want to win that medal.

It's totally yours, baby.

I'm going to Tonya Harding my way out of this.

You get the gold.

It took me a hundred years to finish this joke.

It was labored over.

I should have let it go.

by Anonymousreply 65September 6, 2018 3:45 AM

R64 It hasn't been distilled because it is not needed. Why do we need labels for people's sexuality anyway? Height can be measured. Ethnicity is becoming a mixed bag as well.

Why divide sexuality by gender within the progressive society? Why don't we have a label for "I'm attracted to tall guys with blond hair" too? Why not just say, hey, it's okay to like whoever you like. And that's it.

by Anonymousreply 66September 6, 2018 3:45 AM

Also R64 Bisexual includes the baggage of dual attraction, the very same stereotype that gave birth to "bisexuals can't be faithful". It doesn't make the attraction sound inclusive, it makes it sound like double tracks.

by Anonymousreply 67September 6, 2018 3:47 AM

[quote][R58] What if a female gives you a hard on tomorrow, what will you call yourself? Immediately, a bisexual? Isn't that too cut and dried?

r61, what a strange question to ask on a board like this. What makes you think homosexuality is changeable?

But to answer your question, yes, if I woke up tomorrow and was suddenly sexually attracted to both men and women then I would be bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 68September 6, 2018 3:47 AM

R66 I agree. I like men but I don't do Sodomy.

by Anonymousreply 69September 6, 2018 3:56 AM

[quote]I don't get your logic here. You think people benefit from falsely claiming themselves to be non-binary? Where is that magical industry and why am I not getting a check?" is what you're asking yourself.

r65, I have no idea what you are talking about, I made no mention of the things you list in your post. I simply asked, rather politely, I thought, if you could explain what being non-binary means to you and what constitutes non-binary in general. I can't get a straight answer from you so I'll just drop it.

by Anonymousreply 70September 6, 2018 3:58 AM

[quote]Also some people take it as a clear 50/50 definition so they might feel like it doesn't apply if they aren't like that.

Well that's just fucking STUPID.

by Anonymousreply 71September 6, 2018 4:07 AM

As I understand it, we have these spectrums that are largely parallel:

heterosexual ------ bisexual ------- homosexual

male -------- non-binary --------- female

Both are spectrums.

by Anonymousreply 72September 6, 2018 4:09 AM

[quote][R64] It hasn't been distilled because it is not needed. And that's it.

r66, you are confusing the removal of labels for sexual orientation with the universal acceptance of differing sexual orientations. People who object to same-sex relationships don't do so on the basis of the label gay/homosexual, they object to the idea of two people of the same sex being together.

by Anonymousreply 73September 6, 2018 4:10 AM

R68 What if it wouldn't be a 50/50 division? But just once? As for why, I saw too many second comingouts to believe that sexuality is cut in stone.

by Anonymousreply 74September 6, 2018 4:10 AM

R73 Those aren't the same things, I agree, but I meant what I meant. No one would have sexual identity problems if society didn't force people to identify themselves while accepting sexual attraction to every gender.

by Anonymousreply 75September 6, 2018 4:13 AM

Who are these random sodomites?

by Anonymousreply 76September 6, 2018 4:16 AM

The guy is just an actor being interviewed for his personal profile. If he doesn’t know what the hell he is then so be it. He’s not trying to claim he’s part of the community or speak on anyone’s behalf so who cares.

But if he’s a straight guy pretending otherwise for movie PR then he’ll reap the consequences sooner or later.

by Anonymousreply 77September 6, 2018 4:19 AM

"I can't get a straight answer from you so I'll just drop it."

Because the straight answer is the best one? The gay one is second best? Are do you allow gay the top spot?

Because apparently the fact that I'm non-straight as opposed to gay requires some kind of special instructions to you. It's not that you need those special instructions. It's that you demand them apparently because of PENIS PENIS PENIS PENIS! I do not need to justify my existence to you because your magical penis demands it. I don't belong to some phallic worshipping cult that has your specific cult beliefs in it's bylaws or however you are envisioning your reality.

You need to get off your ass, and do the heavy lifting here. I'm not your teacher. I'm not your tour guide. Pay me the fucking money if you want me to work for you. It's very simple economics. What's in it for me to justify my existence to you? Are you going to execute me if I don't?

This is pretty much what I'm thinking right at this moment.

Somebody give me a shout out. You know, if you're inclined.

by Anonymousreply 78September 6, 2018 4:29 AM

We don't like labels either, Lucas.

by Anonymousreply 79September 6, 2018 4:29 AM

There you go. That's how the world works.

You're gay and you can have all of the shit that a 35 year old gay guy experiences. DEAL WITH IT. You aren't allowed to suck cock unless you can own it.

by Anonymousreply 82September 6, 2018 5:21 AM

I think the sliding scale is very underrated.....I think lots of "straight" guys think of other guys and are attracted to them ibut don't want to fuck them or have their suck their cock, maybe just a hug or a whiff of their scent...totally normal. North Americans are so much about labels

by Anonymousreply 83September 6, 2018 5:30 AM

R78, I agree that you’re an asshole.

I’ve read all your “I’m non-binary” posts and I still have no idea what the fuck you’re talking about. You were asked politely to explain it a couple times, but your answers were worthless, and you never answered a thing.

by Anonymousreply 84September 6, 2018 5:36 AM

I agree to that ^

by Anonymousreply 85September 6, 2018 5:55 AM

Tough shit motherfuckers. You're asking me to explain/ or justify myself to you which I don't have to do.

Seriously, if someone asked you to explain your sexuality, why would you do it? My sexuality doesn't need an "explanation." It just fucking is. If you're looking to educate yourself on the issue, fucking google it, bitch (Which once upon a time was a Datalounge saying). I have the right to be pissed off at you for repeatedly stating that I'm not clear enough for you or I'm not saying it to your satisfaction.

What it all adds up to me is: you haven't convinced us. That's your problem. Not mine.

by Anonymousreply 86September 6, 2018 7:48 AM

I find it interesting that the Alt Gossip site has been saying that Lucas Hedges is gay for about 2 years and all of a sudden he comes out as ...what? Not straight? Alt Gossip has said Lucas has had boyfriends. So his statement that he's not gay is suspect at the very least. But hey. It's a process right.

by Anonymousreply 89September 6, 2018 11:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 92September 6, 2018 12:17 PM

Eldergays and gays of long-gone generations marched and protested and lived their lives as openly as possible so that same-sex attractions could be considered normal, healthy, and more common than people ever realized. What a lot of eldergays don't realize or can't accept is that the direct result of all their hard work is a generation of young people who consider same-sex attractions normal and natural enough to think of them as an option in their lives. Some young people actually follow up on this option, either to experiment or because they actually have strong attractions to people of the same sex. Because of the increasing acceptance of same-sex attractions, there is a greater number of people we'd traditionally call bisexual being much more open about their attractions.

Literally every single thing about this is a good thing and the direct, desired result of a century of gay rights work. Unfortunately, a significant number of eldergays, being elder, refuse to accept this change, even though it's good for gay people in the long run.

by Anonymousreply 93September 6, 2018 12:19 PM

[quote] Seriously, if someone asked you to explain your sexuality, why would you do it? My sexuality doesn't need an "explanation."

If someone asks me what is or why I'm gay I wouldn't have any problem to explain them. The fact that someone has to Google what your sexuality is and that you can't talk about it without going rabid on us, makes me question if even you know what it is.

R93, you’re only talking about elder gays who were open. Most gay men over 55 were not open as young people, many still aren’t

Here are Pat and Kathy, Lucas. Call yourself whatever you want.

Humans just have to label things, even if the label is inadequate or hinders actual understanding of the issue. It's probably a inner primate urge. Go ahead and insist on Gay, Bisexual, or Straight if your mind can't stretch any farther. We understand the limits of your biology too.

by Anonymousreply 97September 6, 2018 12:31 PM

People who freak out about labels tend to be insecure about fluidity and flexibility. They also tend to want to fit everyone into rigid boxes and get upset when others do not fit.

by Anonymousreply 98September 6, 2018 12:43 PM

Gooness. Gracious, ME! Why all the attitude and declarations! Lay off Lucas. The kid is so talented and he's got some movies and a play to promote; but he also knows there will be inevitable questions about his sexualty, no matter how relevant they are to his work. I get that you're annoyed at his ambiguous responses, but don't be so quick to call bullshit. He's so young, he's obviously trying to avoid the label that comes with declaring one's self this, that or whatever. Once, he does so, that becomes the story and the category clings like a prefix to his name. The day will might or might not come when he'll make a statement a la Ellen "Yup, I'm gay.". But that has no bearing on my appreciation of him as an actor of budding skill and promise. I suppose it comes down to whether you think he's being sincere, or cynically trying to thread the publicity needle--exploiting the speculation itself. Wouldn't be the first calculating show-biz figure. I don't think that makes him a heteronormative oppressor.

by Anonymousreply 99September 6, 2018 1:52 PM

Smart move on his part ( or more likely his PR / manager ). When Boy Erased released nobody can accused him "appropriating" gay character because hes now on a "spectrum" thus avoiding the outrage trolls who are now poisoning the industry.

by Anonymousreply 100September 6, 2018 3:29 PM

What seems to be missing in these discussions is the basis for avoiding certain labels in the first place. For young people, "gay" is the equivalent of "faggot" or "queer" as it was used against us eldergays back in the day. "Gay" is the current slur that young people use to deride another's sexuality. However, this has been true since "gay" came into the mainstream during the seventies. I realized this when I heard a friend referring to someone we both knew as "gay" with such contempt, that they might as well have said "faggot," and I was shocked. I didn't know they felt that way about gays. I was struggling with my sexuality at the time, and I realized that I didn't have a friend here, although until then, I thought I had. Just because they used the more acceptable "gay" rather than "faggot" or "queer" meant nothing. For younger people, "gay" has all of the social baggage that "queer" or "faggot" had. "Queer" doesn't have that baggage for them, so it seems more acceptable to them. "Faggot" on the other hand hasn't seemed to have lost its currency .

For me the difference between the terms is that "gay" is what we as a community have chosen to call ourselves and is therefore preferable, even though the provenance of the term is somewhat murky, and it has acquired the connotations of the mainstreams' prejudices against us , while "queer" and "faggot" among others, are labels non-gays have foisted upon us along with all of the abuse that came with it. I think that is why many eldergays cannot embrace the current use of "queer" by young gays. However, like the eldergays, the young gays are trying to find a label less burdensome, but this is problematic for many reasons: the most important being shame over being gay or having same-sex relations. There is a reason why Pride is celebrated.

The bi issue is a whole other can of worms even more complicated, so I won't say anything further except that I feel bad for bis because they don't deserve the hate they get from both gays and straights. It shouldn't be that way.

His language is pointless. We clocked his tea years ago.

We seem to be on a role with celeb twink coming outs lately. First Gary, now Lucas. Though we still need Shawn and/or Connor to make it official.

by Anonymousreply 102September 6, 2018 4:35 PM

I have a grease fire on a spectrum for him.

by Anonymousreply 103September 6, 2018 4:38 PM

Oh, actors. They're like shape shifters who will say or do whatever they need to do to get a role.

by Anonymousreply 104September 6, 2018 4:49 PM

But will he let me lick his pits?

by Anonymousreply 105September 6, 2018 5:03 PM

He used a lot of words to don't say nothing at all

by Anonymousreply 106September 6, 2018 7:34 PM

I just googled “non-binary” and read a few articles. I can see why the non-binary here won’t answer any questions— it’s because the whole concept is a fucking mess.

These non-binary people have no idea what they’re talking about.

by Anonymousreply 107September 7, 2018 3:26 AM

I hate the word "binary" or "non-binary" ...fake words

by Anonymousreply 108September 7, 2018 3:52 AM

I'd like to put his sexuality on a speculum.

by Anonymousreply 109September 7, 2018 4:02 AM

Gay

by Anonymousreply 110September 7, 2018 4:05 AM

So just another actor who doesn’t want to say he’s gay . So Hollywood can not refuse him any roles because he’s gay . On the spectrum another word for gay I think .Like the ones that are bisexual and than come out as gay later or when their career is over

by Anonymousreply 111September 7, 2018 7:43 AM

The answer was a complete mess, unless he is asexual it doesn't make sense at all, and what it can be read as a self serving nonsense.

It's like i'm straight (i want all those nice roles i'm getting) but not all straight (i don't want to be bashed for playing gay roles) mixed with the classic "i'm so special that i'm a new letter on the LGBTIQwhatever"

Even the answer doesn't scream articulate or inteligent he knows what he is doing, that kind of answer won't limit him, and probably he would even receive praise on a lot of gay sites, and at the same time he could take his girlfriend/beard to the next red carpet if he wants an extra promo.

To be honest, given the little work and amazing gay young actor like Joey Pollari is doing i understand more and more why they don't come out. But at least if you want to say something better you know what you wanted to say (which obviously was not Lucas' case)

by Anonymousreply 112September 7, 2018 7:01 PM

Is this gay guy from High School Musical?

by Anonymousreply 113September 7, 2018 7:27 PM

Pansexual, no?

by Anonymousreply 114September 7, 2018 7:32 PM

R113: No, that's Garrett Clayton, this is the guy of Manchester by the sea and Ladybird

by Anonymousreply 115September 7, 2018 7:59 PM

Lucas was at Troy Sivan's seder dinner. That kind of confirms he's gay.

He talked about this on Ellen, still sound like "i want to receive those award worthy roles so i don't say i'm gay but i can say i'm straight because i don't want any backlash for playing a gay character in this movie" but on the positive side it sounded less confussing than the first time

by Anonymousreply 117October 30, 2018 7:02 PM

Its bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 118October 31, 2018 3:14 PM

I'm glad I'm old and don't have to deal with all this millenial whack.

by Anonymousreply 119October 31, 2018 4:10 PM

But R119, your hole will never again be tight like Lucas’

by Anonymousreply 120October 31, 2018 4:14 PM

I just googled this young man and he screamed gay to me. He even has gay face. He is young and we should give him time to come out as gay in the future if his career doesn't hit the a list status.

by Anonymousreply 121October 31, 2018 4:44 PM

This new definition of gender is utter bullshit and is undoing a 100 years of progress. Gender equals sex and is biologically verifiable. Men are allowed to be effeminate and women are allowed to wear pants without having to change their gender. I actually had friends telling me that their 5 year old will probably need to transition one day because he likes wearing dresses! What the actual fuck! And trans women presenting themselves as some 1950’s hetero male’s wet dream. Gay men fought hard for their right to be flaming and feminists fought hard for their right to ditch the heels and make-up and now these so-called progressives want to put us right back into those societal constructed boxes. Fuck them!

by Anonymousreply 122October 31, 2018 5:12 PM

Gay baiting at its lowest.

by Anonymousreply 123October 31, 2018 5:28 PM

I agree. Jist because you're effeminate doesn't mean you are trans. But I think most people know this.

by Anonymousreply 124November 1, 2018 2:48 PM

False.

Gender is not the same thing as sex. Anyone who thinks that is an ignorant idiot.

I liked him in Manchester by the Sea but wished they had found someone new and exciting to play Ben in "Ben is Back." He is just not believable as Julia's son and doesn't feel real in the role. And Julia wipes the screen with him. She's way more edgy and anxious on screen.
