Click bait website at OP's link. Propaganda.

What a useless piece of shit. There is no common ground on fucking conversion therapy. This is a prime example of why we become disillusioned with Democrats.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 1, 2018 12:59 PM |
Yes, and I hope his cowardice would come back to haunt him.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 1, 2018 1:18 PM |
I agree. Granted, CA is not all of America but it's pretty progressive in many ways and for this gay Congressman to have put so much into the bill and then pull it because some religious leaders didn't like it shows weakness. Those religious leaders don't come to him asking for approval of whatever they're supporting, so fuck this Congressman for thinking he needs their blessing on his bill. (He is cute though. I love Asian bottoms.)
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 1, 2018 1:20 PM |
I'm guessing the bill would not have passed and he pulled it to avoid that.

Vote power-seeking but useless scum like this OUT.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 1, 2018 1:39 PM |
There is a good chance, maybe almost guaranteed, SCOTUS would find this as unconstitutional. Kavanaugh will make mince meat of any legislation like this.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 1, 2018 1:40 PM |
Also, many Dems fear it will drive up conservative turnout. It is already rallying the Right in California and nationwide. There is also talk of a referendum to ban attempts to outlaw such therapy.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 1, 2018 1:42 PM |
It’s an overreach that could unleash a huge backlash. You can’t outlaw basic religious beliefs and teachings about sexuality, and such therapy is consistent with the teachings of a huge percentage of mainstream religions. It’s doubtful that even existing bans on such therapy for minors can survive the Kavanaugh Court. This Court is going to widely expand religious rights, not constrict them.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 1, 2018 1:46 PM |
No, r6, it was expected to pass and be signed by Jerry Brown. Low suddenly pulled it after talking to "faith leaders."
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 1, 2018 2:03 PM |
It’s one thing if the state is prohibiting therapists licensed by the state from certain practices, but the state can’t tell religious counselors, clergy, and authorities what to teach or assist parishioners in doing, including regarding sexuality. If someone wants to be celibate for life, the state shouldn’t be able to intrude into counseling that assists with that goal.

WTF??? Even Chris Christie is against conversion therapy.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 1, 2018 2:10 PM |
This is broader than the NJ ban
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 1, 2018 2:11 PM |
Stupid piece of shit.

R15, you realize the legislature doesn’t have the final say? California has ballot initiatives, and SCOTUS ultimately will decide the matter.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 1, 2018 2:20 PM |
R15 truly believes that hyperbolic, juvenile name-calling is the way to win allies and effect change.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 1, 2018 2:23 PM |
There's NO WAY to 'win allies' or 'effect change' with those religious nuts. They will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever compromise.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 1, 2018 2:31 PM |
His comment "Why not keep going when you're in control?" is hilarious. Never in your wildest dreams will you ever here a GOP politician say, "Let's stop this legislation and listen to the LGBT community."
But congrats to the Religious Freedom fucksticks, who are stroking their dicks this weekend, celebrating the gay man backing down.

R19, they have the Supreme Court for decades ahead. They will win this no matter what

Gay San Diego Assemblymember Todd Gloria and lesbian Senate Pro Tem Toni Atkins (also from San Diego) are two of the biggest self-serving LGBTQ opportunists and hypocrites out there. During the primary election, Toni Atkins endorsed and raised money for a Republican transphobic Sheriff over a more qualified, progressive gay Democratic Sheriff who was endorsed by the Victory Fund, Equality Califinia and several other LGBTQ groups. Coward Todd Gloria (we should call him Todd WHORIA) refused to endorse or support this guy who, if elected, would have been the first openly gay male Sheriff in US history. These two are all about seeing how their next political play will further their careers rather than about any integrity. Oh, by the way, all three (Atkins, Whoria, and Low took thousands of campaign contrbutions from the evil for-profit prison industry that is profiting from the ICE immigration debacle (separatin if families) and the school to prison pipeline. When called out on it, Atkins and Whoria claimed they knew nothing about the donations (totaling around $15,000) and Evan Low has refused to even acknowledge his campaign donations from these bloodsuckers. These LGBT politicians are part of the problem and we need to know k their self-serving, hypocritical, cowardly asses out on the street as a wake up call.

He once called gay conversion therapy Child Abuse.
Now, he wants to compromise with the abusers.

California's legislative session ended last night. He pulled the bill because it was questionable that it could or would pass, and if it did, it would give the Republicans a boost in turnout for the election that Democrats both statewide and nationwide don't want to see. Further, remember that California passed a law banning so-called abortion counseling lies, and the SCOTUS (with Anthony Kennedy's participation and deciding vote) ruled unconstitutional because it supposedly conflicted with the religious nuts' right to free speech. Likely, this bill is written in a way that exposed it to summary judgment ruling it unconstitutional as well, so there was no point in giving the right a talking point over a subject that is likely a loser (sorry to say).
There is more work to be done on this matter. It isn't going away.
To the idiots screaming about throwing out one of the most liberal/progressive state assemblymen: fuck off. This is how politics works. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. And sometimes, it behooves you to pick up your toys and go home, saving your time, energy and capital for fighting another day.
Besides, you should be thankful: California's legislature passed SB822, the net neutrality bill that is likely going to save the country (and perhaps the world) from Ajit Pai's destruction of the internet. Did any of you call your representative (if you live in CA) and demand its passage, or donate to one of the many organizations that spearheaded the bill (if you live elsewhere)? Once again, the Democrats step in to clean up the mess Republicans made. You're welcome.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 1, 2018 3:26 PM |
R23 is correct that such a law would be speedily quashed by SCOTUS
