Daily Fail Hits New Low, Names and Shames Former TV Actor Working at Trader Joe's
by Anonymous | reply 84 | September 5, 2018 2:14 AM |
Elvin!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 31, 2018 3:57 AM |
It's Geoffrey Owens who played the super cute bf of one of the Cosby daughters.
Always thought he was so cute on that show.
Didn't he get residual payments? The show was in syndication for years after it originally aired.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 31, 2018 3:58 AM |
OP Ok but you don't think it's interesting that an actor on one of the most popular shows ever is working at a overrated grocery store.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 31, 2018 3:58 AM |
I'm not OP but I think it's just the Mail exploiting anything it can get its talons on. The only point is look at what a loser he's become. It sucks.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 31, 2018 4:00 AM |
You've got anger issues, OP.
The Daily Mail publishes stories that we want to know about it.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 31, 2018 4:02 AM |
Shit story about someone going about his life in a decent manner.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 31, 2018 4:06 AM |

Oops. Sorry about the duplicate post. Thanks for the link.
[quote]OP Ok but you don't think it's interesting that an actor on one of the most popular shows ever is working at a overrated grocery store.
It would be interesting if he had volunteered this information but he didn't, so it's more appalling than interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 31, 2018 4:09 AM |
Its true that the Daily Heil isn't fit to wipe your arse on OP, but maybe this will backfire on them and the actor will get some new acting gigs.
Anything to make those no talent can't spell for shit hacks at the Daily Fail even more miserable.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 31, 2018 4:11 AM |
Well, he's doing better than Bill Cosby.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 31, 2018 4:11 AM |
The Daily Mail is a rag unfit to wipe my arse on. Unless it prints something that I totally agree with.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 31, 2018 4:16 AM |
Can’t he get a job teaching acting somewhere? He’s actually still getting the occasional guest spot on tv, so it’s not even like he’s completely washed up.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 31, 2018 4:17 AM |
Could be worse. He could be working at Aldi.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 31, 2018 4:25 AM |
Well that's yet to happen R11, but I'll keep you posted if it does.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 31, 2018 4:39 AM |
Lesbians suck.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 31, 2018 4:43 AM |
I've read the article but it does not degrade the former actor or use him to "exploit anything it can get its talons on".
Direct your anger to lesbians Karma Lawrence, and her wife, Yanelle Lawrence.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 31, 2018 4:44 AM |
lucrative residuals dried up when cosby was outed as a serial rapist.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 31, 2018 4:44 AM |
Those cunts had to go blabbing to the rags?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 31, 2018 5:03 AM |
He should have no shame about working a regular job, more of these washed up actors should do it.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 31, 2018 5:07 AM |
There’s no shame in work. Plus, who knows, maybe he’s doing OK and just works for the benefits.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 31, 2018 5:08 AM |
Since when did making an honest living become shameful? I'd rather see a former actor work at Trader Joes than end up a crackhead or hooker. Same thing when Gary Coleman was working security. His parents stole all his money. He found a job that paid his bills. End of story.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 31, 2018 5:15 AM |
R20 There's no shame in this story.
The OP inserted shame as part of his obsessive hatred towards a commercially-successful news source.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 31, 2018 5:24 AM |
Oh please, the Daily Mail is totally trying to shame him. They're pointing and laughing: "Look at this washed-up actor whose career is so over that he's working at Trader Joe's!" It's obvious from the way they frame the story.
There's nothing shameful at all about him working there, but the Daily Mail's motives are NEVER innocent. They are ALWAYS exploitative.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 31, 2018 5:34 AM |
My beloved Datalounge makes the Daily Mail look like the Harvard Review.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 31, 2018 5:35 AM |
R24, well you do have a point.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 31, 2018 5:38 AM |
Maybe he enjoys having a regular job and a regular life? Owen might have enough money in the bank to retire, but maybe he likes what he does?
The DM is trash, just like the NE. Both publications need to die already.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 31, 2018 10:05 AM |
There's no shame in working a regular job. Fuck the Daily Mail.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 31, 2018 11:05 AM |
R23 You're obsessed. There's nothing in that newspaper article designed to "shame" this ex-actor.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 31, 2018 11:30 AM |
r28 I'm not r23 but you're being ridiculous. Do you work there or something?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 31, 2018 5:26 PM |
Is he gay?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 31, 2018 5:29 PM |
...........
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 1, 2018 4:33 AM |
He seems like a decent guy, working a decent job. I've had people people here on DL try to shame for working an hourly job. I don't understand why. I at least own my own home, and can living on my wages. Good for Elvin if that is working out, versus the dozens of Hollywood burnouts about whom we read every day here on DL.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 1, 2018 4:44 AM |

He used to teach at HB Studios a Shakespeare class. Their classes used to be so inexpensive (they've apparently since gone up though still relatively reasonable), but I don't think they pay their teachers that much. Folks like Sandy Dennis, Charles Nelson Reilly and William Hickey used to teach there, and I think Helen Gallagher, Austin Pendleton among some others still do. I guess residuals have dried up because of Cosby's real life crimes, so Geoffrey is at least working in a honest job till the next acting gig comes along. Good for him. He's probably been stressed with all that stuff so that might have contributed to some of the weight gain.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 1, 2018 4:56 AM |
I remember the actor more from being nude in Oz...
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 1, 2018 5:23 AM |
Very kind man. He worked out at my gym for years and I loved chatting with him.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 1, 2018 8:18 AM |
It happens to a lot of actors, it's kind of cruel to rub salt in the wounds. At least, he works.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 1, 2018 8:37 AM |
Dude went to Yale. I saw him at my sister's graduation. I can't believe he is working at TJ.
Without those residuals.
Maybe it is for a role, because dude was working in theatre, teaching and tv
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 1, 2018 8:58 AM |
Trader Joe's bbq sauce can't compare to Dr. Huxtable's.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 1, 2018 9:07 AM |
[quote]but the Daily Mail's motives are NEVER innocent. They are ALWAYS exploitative.
Exactly like every medium today.
Oh, and "exploitative" is subjective.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 1, 2018 9:11 AM |
R38 Shit happens you know.
I remember a tv show presenter who said she couldn't find a work after tv cause people didn't believe she needed to work. She was famous and they assume she had money or wouldn't do some jobs.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 1, 2018 9:39 AM |
Well, at least he's better off than Bill Cosby.
I never knew Major Owens was his father.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 1, 2018 9:43 AM |
A friend of mine was once considered an up-and coming major talent in the theatre - had some television roles, but his love was theatre
He now works in a call-centre. Never seen him happier.
Ask him why he gave it up - "stage fright"
He's now able to talk more deeply about it - sounds more like "stage dread and terror"
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 1, 2018 10:05 AM |
[quote]The OP inserted shame as part of his obsessive hatred towards a commercially-successful news source.
You sound like a shill for DM. If you are--and you're spitting nails with rage because I embarrassed your publication with my thread--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Daily Mail is such a garbage publication, if it were toilet paper, I wouldn't wipe my ass with it.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 1, 2018 3:26 PM |
R44 You're confusing hatred and shame and vice versa.
Are you a Catholic and Socialist or vice versa?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 2, 2018 6:46 AM |
Wow, DL criticizing malicious gossip and superficial mockery? Pot meet kettle.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 2, 2018 6:54 AM |
LOL at R46!
The 'Left' is more sanctimonious than the 'Right'
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 2, 2018 7:27 AM |
Maybe he has PTSD from working with perv Cosby
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 2, 2018 7:31 AM |
You're such an idiot, R47.
This isn't even about right and left. It's about a man who is just working and because he was once on a TV show, they're trying to degrade him for the type of work he does now. This isn't politics, it's about basic human decency.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 2, 2018 7:32 AM |
As long as he's happy.
You can work at Trader's Joe and be happy with your life.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 2, 2018 7:43 AM |
Stupid ass FOX picked up the story. But of course.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 2, 2018 7:12 PM |
Imagine, people who do what these scumbags do trying to shame SOMEONE ELSE for what he does for a living.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 2, 2018 7:22 PM |
The people commenting on the DM site about this story were all angry at the DM for publishing this.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 2, 2018 8:09 PM |
Okay, I used to be a regular viewer of the Cosby Show when it was originally on.
I remember that Sondra was married to Elvin, but there is no way in hell that I would remember that the actor who played him was named Geoffrey Owens. Nor would I ever recognize him if I passed him on the street or in a store.
This story is one great big nothingburger.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 2, 2018 9:20 PM |
I think this article exposes how phony the show was. It was science-fiction to put a negro in a business suit and expect us to believe he was upper-middle-class. A supermarket cashier is the highest level of employment the negro can aspire to. We know the truth about negro IQ from Sam Harris's podcast. Facts are never racist.
Bernie would've won.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 2, 2018 9:25 PM |
R56= Jesse Helms
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 2, 2018 9:33 PM |
R57 That's very, very kind of you but i'm really Jeff Weaver. If only we could remove the negro element and the broads from the Democratic Party, we would at last have the conditions necessary for socialism. Also I have a very small penis.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 2, 2018 9:55 PM |
R56, here's the thing: You can obsess over the stupidest, most racist attempt to feel superior, but what it comes down to is individuality. Just because Sir Isaac Newton was brilliant, doesn't mean some white trash loser with a confederate flag had anything to do with it, nor can he hop onto the accomplishments of those who actually succeeded based solely on shared skin color.
If you want to go there, it seems Asians (incl. South East Asians) are far smarter than Europeans since so many of them gravitate to science and math. I've seen projects at MIT and Caltech being worked on by non-whites. So What exactly have you done with that no doubt stellar IQ, genius? Curing cancer?
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 2, 2018 10:12 PM |
You people responding to R56 instead of FF'ing/blocking is why so many Alt Right, 4chan and Reddit trolls have camped out here.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 3, 2018 1:04 AM |
Getting back to the subject of this thread, the two women who "outed" Owens by taking his photo need to buy themselves an effing life.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 3, 2018 5:08 PM |
So remember that when you are at line at WF or at Trader Joe's, you never know if your cashier is a Yale grad or an actor from a super famous tv show!
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 3, 2018 5:12 PM |
"Yale grad"
Affirmative Action style
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 3, 2018 5:30 PM |
Oh shut up, R63.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 3, 2018 6:45 PM |
When Black middle and upper middle class men (his father was a U.S. Representative in Congress) step out of the box and explore a different route for a profession, they take a huge risk and may not be as successful as their fathers. Perhaps if he had pursued politics, his father's legacy or clout would have helped him. He chose acting which is a very subjective profession and very narrow path for black men to follow.
The workforce has changed, women dominate and are in positions to hire and promote...and while they are not heads of mega corporations yet, they do like the counterparts...they hire their own first! It can be a difficult path for a professional black man. Former Secretary of Labor Richard Reich said, "men are leaving the workforce"....he didn't expand...I wonder where they are headed. Owens is working honestly in a job that is vastly different than his training, background and experience, but he isn't stealing , marrying or sleeping with someone for gain. It's probably very difficult for him...give him credit!
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 3, 2018 7:22 PM |
There's a hashtag trending on Twitter in support of Owens. It wouldn't shock me if he got an invitation for a show.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 3, 2018 8:00 PM |
by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 3, 2018 8:02 PM |
He's getting lots of support on Twitter. Even asshole James Woods chimed in with a supporting tweet.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 3, 2018 8:32 PM |
[quote] Labor Richard Reich said, "men are leaving the workforce"....he didn't expand...I
Men aren’t leaving the workforce. They aren’t entering the workforce. You don’t hear of females living in their mom’s basement playing video games all day long & being unable to hold a job. It’s rarely women who can’t work because of “anger issues.” It’s not females who are dropping out of college because of drunkenness, poor grades & all-around bad behavior. It’s males.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 3, 2018 8:53 PM |
How lucrative could his residuals be? He played a supporting character in 22% of the show's episodes.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 3, 2018 11:37 PM |
I’m sure that Ryan Murphy will cast him in AHS
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 3, 2018 11:39 PM |
There is an update to this story. He quit his job.
[quote]The former "Cosby Show" actor job-shamed by some media outlets over the weekend with photos showing him working at a Trader Joe's in New Jersey to make ends meet, said Tuesday he was so upset that he quit his job. "I was really devastated," Geoffrey Owens, who lives in Montclair, said during an interview on Good Morning America.
Nice going, Daily Fail.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 4, 2018 4:11 PM |
I can't believe someone working a day job has to be defended.
The two morons who "outed" Elvin are forty-year-olds who work low-level security jobs.
They have no reason to "wonder" why Elvin works as a cashier (after starring in a high profile and enduring television show) when they are even less accomplished than he is.
Bill Cosbys ongoing legal issues mean all the people who worked with him on all those television shows no longer receive lucrative residuals, this is a hardship for those actors who no longer work as actors and who relied on those residuals as their main income source.
You do what you have to do to make ends meet and if you did not learn this fact in the wake of the 2008 financial meltdown, you will learn it in the next meltdown which will be even worse when the squatter in chief is finally removed from office.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | September 4, 2018 11:44 PM |
I hope this just continues to work in his favour. All he needs is a few gigs a year on long running shows as a guest actor and he'll do fine. Oh, and fuck the Daily Heil.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 5, 2018 12:04 AM |
it's a blessing in disguise. he's got job offers now.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 5, 2018 12:09 AM |
There's no shame in working, but that belly... He needs to focus more on the produce aisle.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 5, 2018 12:22 AM |
Tyler Perry just cast him in a movie
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 5, 2018 12:46 AM |
Does anyone know where these Bitches work ?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 5, 2018 1:10 AM |
Amen, R73.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 5, 2018 1:34 AM |
“That was kind of cool,” Owens told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday about Perry’s offering. “I mean, that kind of sounded like he was saying, ‘Come work with me.’ I’m so, like, skeptical. Like, really? Are you actually saying come work with me? Because we’ve never worked together before. So, that’s a very, very generous thing for him to say. And we’ll see what happens with that. But, that’s encouraging.”
by Anonymous | reply 80 | September 5, 2018 1:53 AM |
R69 You do hear of females with disabling chronic fatigue syndrome which won't allow them to work even part-time from age 19 on, but which miraculously disappears whenever they have to hightail it to Michael's for the glitter glue sale.
