Tess Holliday’s ‘Cosmo’ Cover Proves We Need More Body Diversity In Magazines
Tess Holliday On The Cover Of 'Cosmo' Is Everything We Need In This World
by Anonymous | reply 212 | October 4, 2018 5:23 AM |
This is a UK cover, it won't run in the USA. We have a problem of obesity in this country. Obesity is unhealthy.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 30, 2018 7:24 AM |
Fat is fat.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 30, 2018 7:27 AM |
Jesus! Women want to be lazy, obese bitches and still be found sexy. When people are drooling over John Goodman I'll get on the body positivity bandwagon. #equalityforall
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 30, 2018 7:27 AM |
Oh and she's a fat unhealthy cunt!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 30, 2018 7:28 AM |
F all of you. Good, fun, sexy cover...should boost sales and help raise the self-esteem of some fatties...SHE'S NOT HIDING IT.
It's not some shady stuff like slimming down Lens or Amy...she looks great.
(Don't get me started about how fatties ALWAYS have to be portrayed as jolly roly-polies...that's the next hurdle.)
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 30, 2018 7:37 AM |
R6 Quit Eating So Much!!!!! Alcohol and food...the last socially acceptable vices.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 30, 2018 7:38 AM |
But she is hiding aspects of it, r6 - she loves being made up and posing for highly contrived, flattering photos (where there's usually no cellulite to be seen), but don't you dare mention the fact she can't get up from sitting without assistance. She's only wants to be celebrated but don't you dare speak of the downsides, limited mobility, or health complications of maintaining such a weight. She isn't sexy to my eyes but I'm not a chaser. I look forward to reading all about the broken sales records ;)
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 30, 2018 7:53 AM |
Does she need help hosing off on her porch?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 30, 2018 8:01 AM |
Tess looked amazing, even as she arrived at the photo shoot!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 30, 2018 8:05 AM |
I think the UK has even more obesity than we do.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 30, 2018 8:05 AM |
I think it's just as bad to promote an overweight person as it is a severely underweight one.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 30, 2018 8:12 AM |
[quote]Good, fun, sexy cover...should boost sales and help raise the self-esteem of some fatties...
What is good and fun about being grossly obese?
Are magazine covers with dangerously under weight models positive because they may raise the self-esteem of anorexics?
Also: I'd love to see the original photo. This one is Photoshopped to death. It's just as false as any other Cosmo cover.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 30, 2018 8:38 AM |
It's just freak show stuff. We haven't moved on as much as people like to think.

I was 50 Pounds overweight at one point. It was one of the most miserable times of my life. I was so tired all the time and it fell awful.i lost it thank god but she has to be like 150 pounds overweight so how is she managing that? She is setting herself up for all kinds of misery I’m the future . She might be kind of ok now but that is because she is young. Someone like Ashley Graham I can understand . She looks sexy and is not an unmanageable size but it is absolutely reckless to encourage this kind of shit in the name of inclusivity. Also just not attractive.

What a timeline! The cover girl is a cover house and the blurb poses to the women of the 21st century: is success an illness?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 30, 2018 1:22 PM |
I predict in the near future when Tess is dying of fat related health problems, she and her feminist media will be blaming society for letting her get away with being obese.
“I mean, they put me on the cover of Cosmo, why would I think anything was wrong?”
Where are the doctors who aren’t pussies, correcting this bullshit?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 30, 2018 1:25 PM |
I hate bullshit like this, not because I'm against the idea of it but because it's the fashion industry pulling that insincere tactic of pushing models in the name of diversity, but then making sure to pick women who are still exceptionally beautiful regardless of their flaws. Is it really being inclusive if each and every time, you keep choosing models who are so beautiful that their beauty cancels out their major flaw?
What if Tess Holliday had the face of the monstrosity below? Would she be on the cover of Cosmo? Of course not.

by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 2, 2018 6:33 AM |
I used to be overweight (though nowhere in that league) and it sucked. I was embarrassed about it, felt tired and sick all the time and had sore joints. My embarrassment and sense of shame is partly what encouraged me to lose 70 pounds and get fit - and guess what - it is not an impossible task - people do it all the time if they are very motivated.
If we have fatties on magazine covers how is that going to help people realise that they need to lose weight? Or is it just going to be acceptable now to kill yourself with food?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 2, 2018 7:38 AM |
WHY does she have a giant tattoo of Heather Locklear on her arm?
Or is it Loni Anderson?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 2, 2018 8:00 AM |
What was the reasoning behind the editor's decision to have a very obese cover girl? Obesity is not healthy, least of all attractive.
They should have posted a size 12 or size 14 model -- that's the average size of most of the women worldwide, not a size 40 or whatever giant size she is.
She is doomed to have hip and knee problems in the future (as well as diabetes, stroke and heart attack). I used to work in an Ortho floor and lots of obese women ended up with hip replacements from all the weight.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 2, 2018 8:11 AM |

It's one thing to be big, considered fat/thicker naturally. There are all body types. It's another to be morbidly obese, which is very unhealthy. This is a bad message, and tries to make this part of a "normal, healthy" lifestyle.

Yeah, who cares. Some of you bitchy queens seem to get upset over the simplest things. So she's fat and on cosmo? How is this affecting any of you personally? And r93, you're a fucking hypocrite. We pay for more than just "the obese". How about all the hiv poz guys out there? How about the non hiv guys who are on prep? Look beyond your sad, shallow little world. We're also paying for the drug and alcohol affects on most posters here as well as all the various mental health issues. Don't get me started on the mentally ill trannies trying to destroy gays and lesbians all the while demanding outrageous things.
P. S. Her husband looks like a stud and her portrait tattoos are quite striking and done well. I wonder who her artist is?

by Anonymous | reply 99 | September 5, 2018 5:54 AM |
wow, R97, defensive much?
I work in the health field, specializing in Diabetes. Our country-- the USA-- has a Diabetes epidemic and it's affecting millions and taxing our healthcare system. Diabetes is brought about by unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, but 99% of the time, it is due to OBESITY. Even kids as young as 6 years old are getting diabetes and that was unheard of 30 years ago.
So please put away your holier-than-thou attitude. And how dare you compare this with people with HIV. This is totally unrelated. Obesity is an American health problem. It's shocking to see Obesity being celebrated like this. This woman is UNHEALTHY.

Considering that gay men in the fashion industry dictate who is beautiful and who isn't, considering so many gay men in the fashion industry (and most gay men in general) hate anything "fat", considering bitchy fabulous gay men in the fashion industry can't wrap their mind around the concept that even though a woman is as big as Tess maybe she wants to lose weight but maybe she'd like to have nice clothes to wear in the meantime. So I'm happy for her because so many of you are repulsed by her lol!

No thanks, I'm with the rest of the people here who think this sends the wrong message. Is there room for a morbidly obese and confident woman in the modeling and entertainment world? Sure, there are plenty of roll models now (yes, I know it's a typo and it stays) who stay in their own part of the world where they get those nice clothes someone above cites as the reason for this 'celebration.' This shouldn't be celebrated...we should be helping people get better because this is a 'disorder' and is not healthy.

Photograhers and editors slim her down. Watch her ig video to see how fat she really is. There is no way that level of obesity can be justified or promoted as a positive thing. Yes, it is strange that her face is so much slimmer compared to her body.

r132 He also claims he was sexually assaulted multiple times. Not as a child, as a grown man, by both men and women:
[quote]People laughed in my face about how it’s not possible to rape a man. When the perpetrator was a woman, they acted like I should be grateful. When it was a man, it was my fault for being drunk at a gay bar. I was met almost universally with nothing but ridicule and incredulity. So I stopped talking about it.

Let's storm all the museums around the world which depict "fat women" and tear down these despicable images promoting obesity. Probably why are insurance rates are sky high!!!
I sit back and laugh at how society in general has embraced outrage culture to an extreme that hasn't been seen in history. Everyone is in hysterics about every fucking thing. A big girl with a pretty face and beautiful tattoos gets on a cover of a magazine and people lose their minds. Stop and think how exactly is she affecting your life right now at this moment? She's not, she's living her life and seems to be relatively content with life. Move on folks, nothing to see here. Work on your own life, that's all that matters.
And to the person up thread who is equating this to portraying an anorexic is dead wrong. The body is more likely to easily recover from obesity than it is anorexia. For centuries big women (ever heard of rubenesque?) have been portrayed as objects of beauty. There are some cultures today that think of a robust woman as a sign of health/wealth and is the object of desire. Never in history has a skeletal person been looked upon as anything other than sickly. This anorexic shit is the result of the unattainable constructs of beauty forced upon women by t.v., movies, and magazines all in the effort to make money.

Describing her as a "big girl" is disingenuous. She's morbidly obese. Look at the photo at R134.
And no one is "losing their minds"...we're going our opinions. The one losing their mind seems to be you.
[quote]Stop and think how exactly is she affecting your life right now at this moment?
She's not affecting any of our lives. We're simply giving our opinions about the cover....as we do with so many other things portrayed in the media. Something wrong with that?
[quote]And to the person up thread who is equating this to portraying an anorexic is dead wrong. The body is more likely to easily recover from obesity than it is anorexia.
Recover? So now you ARE saying she's obese.... not just a "big girl"... and you're also saying that obesity is something to recover from. Well, we're in agreement about that.
[quote]For centuries big women (ever heard of rubenesque?) have been portrayed as objects of beauty.
The body shape at R134 is not Rubenesque

As someone who's never been overweight, all I can think about when I look at R134 is how INSANELY uncomfortable it looks like it'd be to carry that much excess weight. What the hell does she do in the middle of the night when she's sleeping on her side, and gets a sudden itch in her lower back?
It's a shame, because she really does have a classically beautiful face—which, as other posters pointed out, is the ONLY reason she's made it this far; so much for "rebelling against beauty standards."
And R146 geez, that's gonna be one screwed-up kid.

R156 I think you have too much time on your hands, what with dissecting people's posts and all. You may want to take a look in the mirror(literally and figuratively) and do some self reflection. Ask yourself, "why do I need to lash out at others under the guise of "expressing my opinion""? The life you live must be so sad.. And r162, not everyone is a "fattie" as you claim who are responding indignantly, they are just wondering why would someone who should be comfortable with their lot in life complain about someone who actually is comfortable with their lot in life. I feel sad for all you angry, bitter, gin soaked queens.

'My health is nobody's business!'
Except that you put your business on the cover of a magazine for the world to see and discuss.
Same with Tiger Woods. He cultivated the fame and interest and sold every detail down to his shaving cream preferences . He stuck his family on the cover of People to sell that, too. Then when the chatter turned negative he wanted to take it all back and claim privacy.
It doesn't work that way, Sweetie. Your choices, your blowback. You get to own it all.
The above poster is right. This is the tattoo'd/fat lady, formerly found in a freak show, wanting to get on a beauty magazine in order to 'deconstruct' people's perceptions and manipulate opinion. Demolition is messy, so don't bitch because you got what you wanted.

R157 is correct - no fat person is comfortable, happy or proud. I'm an Australian size 18 (which I think is 14 in US sizing) and I got to this size from eating shit and drinking too much. Now I bust my ass at the gym and count calories on Myfitnesspal but the weight is hard to budge. I refuse to get surgery yet because I want to try and lose it naturally. Anyway, back on topic, people like Tess who glorify obesity do no favours for fatties like me, just makes people despise us even more. To me it seems like Tess loves attention but can't be bothered doing any hard work - she makes excuses to herself and the people around her buy into it which further justifies her stance. And believe me, all those skin folds will stink. Even on cold days.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | September 9, 2018 2:31 PM |
R6, she doesn’t look great. There are curvy, bigger than usual women who look great, and Tess is not one of them.
Tess isn’t curvy, she just plain ole FAT. Look at the size of that gut. And those tats will be an even bigger disaster if she ever decides to lose weight.
I understand how it happens. I’ve been depressed, and I’ve eaten my fair share of chocolate bars, but I cannot bring myself to “letting it go”. You know why? Because I have common sense, coupled with a healthy dose of vanity. I have a beautiful fucking face, and a fantastic body. I’ll be damned if I allow myself to become a fucking cow in some body shaping underwear. Fuck that. I have my pride.
This chick needs to snap the fuck out of it. She’ll be six feet under before she even turns 60, and assholes are cashing in on her poor health, while fat frauen convince themselves that it’s OK to develop diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, all because someone touched them in their “no no” spot when they were children.
Get a fucking therapist, and a sturdy treadmill.
by Anonymous | reply 182 | September 9, 2018 2:48 PM |
Well R182, I agreed with you until the "no no spot" comment. That may be true for some obese PEOPLE, but not for all.
She's unhealthy and needs to get at the root of her problem. Deal with the immediate fire first and then get to the cause.
She may not need a therapist after she likes what she feels like on the treadmill.
by Anonymous | reply 183 | September 9, 2018 3:04 PM |
R183, Tess will not lose the weight. She’s a short gal, and won’t make any money as a model, at her height.
She hasn’t any motivation to get fit. Her weight is what she’s cashing in on.
I am really puzzled as to why people are enabling this. Does the industry believe that this is the correct answer to eating disorders such as anorexia, and bulimia? It’s almost like Tess is being used as a big huge middle finger to the critics. A parody of normal weight, in the extreme.
There’s absolutely nothing about Tess that makes her unique. She’s not unusually beautiful, she’s fat, and is covered in ugly tattoos. Hey, live and let live, sure, but this makes zero sense. It’s like the industry has decided that this is what most women look like.
I know that there are lots of huge women out there, but am I being naive to think this is not the norm? Or is it? Is this what the majority of young women look like in America and the UK today?

[quote] I know that there are lots of huge women out there, but am I being naive to think this is not the norm? Or is it? Is this what the majority of young women look like in America and the UK today?
Definition of terms helps. Absolutely, women with measurements like Tess Holliday are unhealthy. The majority of young women in the US do not look this large -- their metabolisms are still faster than more mature people's. I am comfortable stating that most women I see from UK and US media are near Ms. Holliday's measurements. From what I've read and seen recently from the UK, the younger women seem larger than they did a generation ago.
A waist-to-height-ratio (WHtR) is considered at present a highly accurate indicator of health in both the UK and in North America. The risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease begins to rise with a WHtR above .50 (i.e., subject's waist measurement half the measurement of the subject's height). The WHtR measurement is more precise at measuring life expectancy.
My source for this claim is the peer-reviewed research article "Waist-to-Height Ratio Is More Predictive of Years of Life Lost than Body Mass Index" by Margaret Ashwell , Les Mayhew, Jon Richardson, and Ben Rickayzen. It's not body-shaming to state that men and women with waist to height ratios over .5 are at increased risk of developing cancer, diabetes and heart problems), or that men and women with waist to height ratios under .4 are at increased risk of dropping dead from undernourishment and heart problems. "Health at Every Size" is an illusion. It is body-shaming to tell them they look disgusting, grotesque and freakish as the concern about health is entirely absent. If you're not paying for their food expenditures and medical bills, the only worthy critical remark is: "Why not talk to your GP [US: family medicine doctor] and take action?"
Without a measuring tape, I would estimate from the retouched photos in this thread that Ms. Holliday's WHtR is above .6. No respectable, sane physician would call that a healthy size. But there are decades of precedents of women's fashion magazines putting women with the other extreme of unhealthy shapes on the cover. Women's fashion magazines don't make much money from women who are happy with their physiques, healths, money, and love lives.
Including below a link to a Quartz article with a WHtR calculator so you can have fun estimating your own health risks (and maybe the health risks of delusional public figures):
by Anonymous | reply 186 | September 9, 2018 5:26 PM |
I know it's cliched to say, but she has such a beautiful face and gorgeous hair. God, why would you allow yourself to get that big when you're that attractive? A little overweight is fine, but morbidly obese means you will die sooner than you should.

For the most part, the most photographed models of the last couple of decades have been fit and of a healthy weight: Cindy Crawford, Christie Brinkley, Gisele, Cheryl Tiegs, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell...etc.
On the runway, designers choose thin models because they show off the clothes better. Remember, runway shows were for buyers and journalists... not the general public.

R85 yeah, I've been wondering about how much the face has to do with it. Women's faces are one of the first things people instinctively examine for clues about health/youth and they act as a status marker for a 'mate'. The choice of Tess with the glamorous face and enormous tits makes this monolithic pattern very obvious.
Straight men go crazy for a woman who is (key words) *very slightly* overweight (think Marilyn) because the lizard brain does the talking for most human beings when it comes to visual sexual attraction. That said, I'm still not certain how that works for us, being gay and all, but I'm sure some bright spark knows the answer) or how it accounts for women like Holliday gracing us with her presence and selling out merch/covers etc.
It's interesting how lesbians take a dim view of women carrying any extra weight. As a size 10 U.S. I've been given brush-off by very athletic size 2-6 lesbians who think that anything above 0% bodyfat is disgusting. Naturally healthy women older than 18 will all carry 5-10 extra lbs of fat (so, not like Tess, ofc) and retain it because of evolutionary adaptation, but somehow this is unreasonable in the harsh les-eat-les world.
