A friend of mine has done porn. (Maybe 4-5 films, with a major maker). I've deliberately stayed away from the films of the company he worked for so as not to accidentally see him working. Hooker: It's advertising.

Egomaniac/sex addiction: needs praise and constant reassurance that they're the hottest guy in the room. An odd mix of religious upbringing combined with being gay, being a former fattie who lost the weight and got buff, and poor self-esteem/issues were the big clues. These guys were obsessed with sex and getting as much as possible, but were the most fun, enthusiastic and while not the easiest to work with (that would be the hookers), the ones most likely to become friends. The smallest talent pool.

I always felt the worst for the first group. Their desperation was palpable and quite uncomfortable. The producer I worked with the most, the one who discussed this with me, would turn away the majority of these "applicants" and even went out of his way to counsel them against doing porn — against his self interests. I heard this producer say to many younger (but obviously legal) guys that the cash for the job would last for the next hit, but porn was forever and they needed to think about how they're going to feel telling their future boyfriends about the work.

The hookers were the easiest to deal with. It was nothing more than business with them, and they showed up on time, did their job, and left. There was no bullshit to deal with, and the only time the producer heard back from them was when the movie came out and either they were willing to work to promote the movie (translation: wanted copies to sell to their clients) or wanted more work in movies.

The egomaniacs, like I said, were the ones this producer really liked to hire because the performance was the most authentic and best on film. They were also the smallest (by far) group who ended up on film, mostly because their nature was that they had the wherewithal to get their lives together (breaking free from religion and losing weight are no easy tasks), and everyone has relatable issues. Of these guys, either they have no issues with or regret from doing the porn, or they really, really do; there seems to be no in-between. I'm still friends with a couple of guys that I met on set (who have no issues; those that do tend to disappear and will act awkwardly like you've never met if you have occasion). This group is extremely diverse, too: of those I got to know well enough to learn about, two were lawyers, one was in medical school, one was doing his PhD in physics, one was a fireman, and one was a trust-fund baby (and extremely wealthy); there were actors, dancers, businessmen, teachers, and they came from every geographic region in the world.
