Bringing Back Edibles from Vacation
I'm heading to Las Vegas for a few days for vacation, and I am going to stop at a dispensary to get a few things while I am there. I was thinking some mints and gum.
I'm flying back home. I figured I could just stop at a convenience store to get some regular mints and gum and substitute the ones I bought at the dispensary for the "regular" ones.
If I pack them in my checked luggage, what are my chances of getting caught?
Advice?

It's better to bring them in your carry-on or even on your person. Don't break the seal on the packaging if you can avoid it. I traveled internationally this summer and had some THC breath strips in my toiletry bag in my carry on. It looked completely innocuous on x-ray and I think it would have also been fine if it had been in my pocket alongside a chapstick or something else. The key is to have it blend in and not stink.

I did a little research on this, and the pros say you should keep your edibles in your carryon. Putting your edibles in regular mints/gum/candy containers is recommended (i.e., if you buy edibles that look like gummi bears, buy a bag a regular gummi bears, throw away the regular ones and put yours in the bag). I've traveled with chocolate edibles and never been stopped. Because the TSA is looking for guns and bombs, not candy. Also, don't travel with a carryon bag FULL of edibles. Be sensible and only carry a few.

They search food, even packaged food, at the Sea-Tac airport. I am unsure about Vegas.

OP here.
Someone else told me to keep them in my carry-on as well, but that will make me a nervous wreck.
I was just going to put them in the pocket of my jeans in a gum or mint container.
Bad idea?

I've done it dozens of times. I put them in my carry on backpack, never had a single issue. I've put them in gum packs, whopper bags, etc. not a single glance.

An Uber driver I had in Vegas last December told me there have been 0 arrests at the airport since legalization, and “everyone” flies out with weed products. OP, edibles are the easiest thing to transport. Remove any packaging that identifies it as containing THC, but don’t overthink it. I flew home with chocolate bars that I unwrapped except for the interior foil wrappers. Throw it in your carry on for plausible deniability.

As others have said, replace the outer packaging and keep it in your carry on. If you put it in your checked bag it will probably be stolen.

I was just wondering about this myself. If you had, say, twenty gummies, what would you put them in? A Haribo bag?

I buy a bunch of stuff and just mail it to myself.

I fly with weed (bud, not edibles) in my carryon ALL THE TIME. From cities where it’s not even legal! Never been caught. Just be smart, hide it well but not in any way that will arouse too much suspicion. Packing it really small in a tiny ziplock (grinding it all in advance helps) and hiding that in the middle of a large opaque pill bottle (think 250 Tylenol or Multivitamins), surrounded by pills, is my favorite method. Throw that pill bottle into the most interior part of your carryon (like a “secret” pocket inside a separate compartment), throw some decoy bottles in a more obvious compartment that is seen first, and hold your breath while they x-ray it...
Never been caught once. Never even had my bag searched. TSA folks are overworked and distracted constantly, and wind up dealing with everyone’s stupid shit like forgetting their water bottle is in the bag or bringing a giant bottle of shampoo with them. PS: the sniffing dogs are looking for bombs, and you can’t train those dogs to sniff for more than one thing (like explosives AND cannabis). So relax. Be cool!

Yes, R8.
I also bought some chocolate edibles, and just bought a small bag of chocolate-covered raisins. Because I am a fat ass, I did not just throw away the chocolate raisins ,but ate them first, then put my tch chocolates in there.

Don’t worry about it. Slim to no chance they will search on a domestic flight. But I’ve always done carry on.
The whole thing is ridiculous at this point. But I live in NY - one of the most aggressive anti-pot cities in the country. Talk about the death of NYC - sad. And DeBlasio deserves the blame - incompetent and useless. Talks a big game about progressive politics but hasn’t done anything. Screw him.

The Portland airport states that they are not looking for pot in your carryon. If they do find it a.d you are flying to where it is legal no problem. Otherwise thet will ask you to give it to afriend or toss. Check the Las Vegas airport website, they should explain their policy.

OP, don't put them in your pocket, you will have to empty your pockets before getting scanned.

I once brought back a pork pie and a steak and kidney pie from London. Customs thought I was nuts but they let me keep them.

I came back from Amsterdam in 2004 with an oz. of weed wrapped up and stuffed into a tub of moisturizer in my checked bag. Going through customs I saw this little Asian man being screamed at by a huge customs agent "DO YOU HAVE PORK PRODUCTS????". It was surreal, I made through customs with my weed but they were really giving it to that Asian man over some pork.

There’s a big warning on the Vegas Airport website (in the rotating banner at the top of the home page) that states you can’t have pot on airport grounds and can be arrested, fined, etc...

Did you see Midnight Express, r20? It’s like that but with slot machines and Wayne Newton.

I wouldn’t do Amsterdam. I’ve been thoroughly searched multiple times at the AMS airport. Within the US, not an issue.

If you see “SSSS” on your boarding pass, they will search EVERYTHING. Go mail it or something instead because they will find it. Also, Amsterdam does search pretty thoroughly.

A friend of mine was caught that the Las Vegas airport. That was two years ago. When I saw him again, he didn't have any legs. Story is that he tried to run when they found the weed and the sniffing dogs chomping his legs off.

Took stuff out of DIA airport multiple times and my suitcase was searched. No issues.
Remove all packaging that identifies the product. Put the edibles in small ziplock bags and removed the outside packaging from the CBD bottles. The edibles I don’t try and hide, just put them in the suitcase. The bottles of Cbd I put with my toiletries.
I don’t smoke, so I don’t carry bud

OP you can make your own edibles at home buy some pot and any brownie or cookie mix. Combine the 2 and bake your own. I do it all the time. I even have a few I usually sell to friends.

Dammit. I wish this thread was started sooner. I just returned from California and was asking friends there about it. Half said ship it, half said put in your checked bag. But I didn't feel confident enough to do either. Reading this I feel a bit better. I have a lot of anxiety and wanted to try some edibles and CBD.

Carried four ounces down the front of my pants from Denver to Cinti before it was legalized. Still can't believe I did that but I had no issues. No I'm not recommending it.

Was that befor 9/11, r35?
I smuggled a live guinea pig in the front pocket of my hoodie once, but that was before 9/11 and body scans.

TSA has been checking snackythings so I would get it as mints or gum vs chocolates. I had 2 pounds of custom m&ms in my carryion bag for a trade show (not edibles) and I was totally shaken down and searched hard. This was in July FYI.

Having lived in Washington since it became legal, I’ve done it so many times I lost count. Discard original packaging and put items in something else. TSA have bigger fish to fry.
