A. Zverev actually has a good early round draw. He has no excuse not to reach at least the 4th rd.
Venus got screwed big time. Kuznetsova, then Giorgi, then Serena and if she gets by her, Halep all to reach the QF. A nightmare
Federer has a difficult section. Hopefully Kyrgios shows up to challenge him.
Nadal another dream draw unless Khachanov plays up to his potential

Felix qualifies (2016 U.S. Open Boys' Champion)
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 24, 2018 8:51 PM |
Felix has the game to be a top player in a near future, of course a great player is more than a big forehand and a solid backhand so time will tell if he has the brains to match th shots.
I think there's an interesting new generation of youngsters. Felix is the best of the players born in 00's but there are other who are doing very well like Molleker or Kuhn (well he was doing very well before his problem in the toe, he was top 200, but even he is having a rough time recovering his form he basically has no points to defend for the rest of the season so probably he regain his ranking and start playing GS next year)
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 24, 2018 9:11 PM |
They better not slot Felix in the first round against Shapo. All of Canada will cry.

well if Ashe had had its usual 5 matches instead of 4, i'm sure Sloane would have gotten a slot. It's odd that on day 1 they are starting Ashe at 12

Look out for Sabalenka. She won New Haven 6-1 6-4 over Suarez Navarro for her first title. If she can keep her forehand consistent, she's hard to beat. Lots of power and not a bad mover

R41 she started coming on strong at the end of last year. She helped Belarus win Fed Cup over the US, then she lost a close match to Sharapova in Hong Kong. She lost a close match to Wozniacki in Eastbourne this year and reached the SF of Cincinnati last week

by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 26, 2018 2:05 AM |
Sloane getting Armstrong because it's first match ever played in the new stadium so they wanted a big name and American.
Apparently Ashe will start at 12:00 and feature only four matches throughout the entire tournament. Lindsay Davenport mentioned this in an interview on the US Open podcast. Just as well, it's a horrible court to watch live, and I'd imagine it sucks to play in there during the day when it's only 1/3rd full.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 26, 2018 8:54 AM |
R46 that's b.s. - Serena could have been scheduled on Armstrong if that's considered an 'honor'. Defending men's and ladies champs always used to get Main Stadium opening matches. With Sloane you never know if it could be her last match of the tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 26, 2018 12:15 PM |
Just did my Racquet Braket entries on Tennis Channel's website.
For then men, I ended up with Nadal beating Fed. I kept looking for opportunities to knock one of them out, but going match by match, I couldn't come up with the scenario of either guy losing early. Certainly Djokovic has a shot vs Federer in the QF, but my gut was telling me that Federer pulls that match off.
For the ladies, I did pick Serena. She has a tough draw, but I can't envision Halep beating her in the 4R. Then - true to WTA form - I have a bunch of the Top Ten losing early, so my later rounds are full of lower ranked players who have been in form (Bertens, Sabalenka, Mertens, etc) and Sharapova who appears to have one of the easier draws.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 26, 2018 12:16 PM |
R47, put Serena on Armstrong, and Stephens on Ashe? No way. Who will attract more fans and more viewers? Serena. So she gets the bigger stadium.
Certainly they could put Sloane on Ashe, and Venus-Kuznetsova on Armstrong. But it's tough to argue putting a match between two former champs on Ashe.
The US Open has never had a tradition of scheduling the titleholder on Ashe (unlike Wimbledon & Center Court). Sure, it's probably worked out that way because the winners are usually the highest ranked and most popular players. But when Kuznetsova defended her title in 2005, she was scheduled on Armstrong (and promptly lost). If anything, Stephens is just the victim of having to play on the same day as two living legends, both American.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 26, 2018 12:30 PM |
Sabalenka is one of those strange cases that after being a complete nobody as junior emerge to be a good player as pro.
I doubt she'll do well on the US open. Rising stars generally crumble if they do a great tournament just before a GS, but if she got easy wins in the first rounds things could be different.
On the male draw i want a lot of new faces in the second week. ATP really needs the youngsters to start channelling veterans on GS. I know everybody seems to want a Nadal/Djokovic or a Nadal/Federer, but i want new faces in the final (at least one new one)
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 26, 2018 1:16 PM |
R49 you're wrong. The defending ladies champ always played the 1st match on Ashe - barring illness or injury that would preclude scheduling her later. It's a dis. Katrina Adams should weigh in.

I don't think so. Even the nobodies are staying in Manhattan, they have car service (provided by the tournament) to bring them to the stadium. I know that Novak stayed in a house in NJ one year, he bought 2 apts in soho recently but don't think it's completed yet.

R29, ESL has been banned, I think, and banished to the Russian troll farm whence he came to infest many a DL thread with racist and sexist shitstirring. I reckon he had a penchant for tennis, so he (mainly) behaved on the tennis threads, even though some of his sexism and racism sometimes came through.
Judging by the wonky grammar and syntax of some of our nonnative contributors, he may still be here but no longer using his ESL monicker.

Bye Halep. 1 slam is good enough for her IMO I didn't want to see her dominating.
Sock got a very lucky easy first round opponent and he's going to snap his big losing streak. He got so lucky he didn't get a dangerous floater like Wawrinka
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 27, 2018 5:09 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 27, 2018 5:12 PM |
And Stan is crushing Dimitrov again. Grigor has talent but he has no character to be a top player.
Of course if Stan was able to defeat him at Wimbledon when he was playing really bad before the tournament it was easy to guess that he'll crush him here because Stan is playing way better lately
Fortunately the equal money was conquered in another era, if the women's had to ask for it right now they would laugh in their faces. Wta is a joke right now

by Anonymous | reply 72 | August 27, 2018 5:40 PM |
R72 yes as someone who plays tennis, heat is annoying. Whatever the temperature is, it's always hotter on a hard court as the heat gets absorbed.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | August 27, 2018 5:48 PM |
Grigor is a very nice fellow and has a good looking game. Problem is he cannot compete very well for whatever reason- choke? Anyway it's nice to see Stan playing well again. I expect he will close out this match. He is a very exciting player to watch and he DOES have the competitive grit Grigor lacks.
I wonder R71- true- a lot of the Americans are ignorant Trumpsters. Pro tennis players are an even more stunted adults than most professional sports (perhaps not golf- I don't know) because it is an individual sport. None of them seem too bright either. Nadal, Fed, Novak and Andy all seem pretty tolerant, and also smart, particularly Roger, Novak and Andy. Roddick was a pretty open minded fellow as well- late in his career. So is James Blake. But these younger guys seem like they live in a bubble more than most.

OK GRIGOR TIME TO FIRE DANI!!!! I thought he would have done so after Wimbledon but now he's had a shitty summer. Time for Dani to go. Wawrinka is a tough draw in back-to-back slams but Grigor has sucked at most big tournaments this year. The draw has nothing to do with the order of play. The latter is determined simply by who the marquee name is. The tennis knowledge of the 90% of those who are willing to pay for the overpriced tickets the night session is restricted to Federer and Serena, so they always put them in those spots.

Chrissie looks good. Her work is good but she has always had a strange mouth.
Venus's hair became undone as in the 3rd set. Too bad about Kuzie, I kind of like her, she is tough.
Serena looked solid albeit a bit hefty. She needs to do something about her facial moles, I think they're getting larger..

I like tennis but these tennis players have really shitty autographs. They are just tiny scribbles. Serena's is just an S basically. I went with my niece to wait for her last US open win a few years ago. She also collected a 4 million dollar bonus that night. She was out partying until 430am. She was supposed to appear on good morning america at 7am. We waited until 430am, and my niece got her autograph...it was just an S. My niece was happy so I guess it's OK. She has a huge entourage!

R180 yes you are right. There are a number of former top 10, 20 and 30 players who are coming back from injury and thus are not seeded. Halep was unlucky to have drawn Kanepi, Venus was unlucky to have drawn Kuznetsova even though she won and Dimitrov was unlucky to have drawn Wawrinka. There are other examples too but those were the biggest 3
by Anonymous | reply 182 | August 28, 2018 2:11 AM |

Schnyder is well past her prime but coming back and drew Sharapova after qualifying.

by Anonymous | reply 207 | August 28, 2018 11:13 AM |
Nadal has a great draw. I like his chances to repeat.
I would definitely consider Ferrer an overachiever. No one expected him to be Top Five for multiple years, he won a Masters title, and has won the most ATP matches among players to never win a major. He was one of the hardest working guys on tour, and while he has a reputation as a baseliner, he had really beefed up his serve, would attack short balls and end points from the net.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | August 28, 2018 11:20 AM |
I think he's an underachiever having had so many years as a consistent player in the Top Ten. I'd have expected more than one GS final with that kind of record.
I just looked it up and he's won over $30m in prize money which is a hell of a lot for someone who never won a GS tournament.

R114, my impression of many professional tennis players both men and women is that they are so focused on themselves that they kind of stunt their maturity, like physicians in training, particularly surgeons. It's the nature of such an intense individual sport with players who come of age very young. Some of them are dunderheads if not necessarily dumb. They have not even thought about politics, often even the politics of the game. Nadal was a perfect example of this when some years ago he threatened not to play in the UK due to their taxes as if he was the only player having to pay them! As he 'grew up' he changed his tune. I think Nadal has also been naive about doping. I truly believe he was given substances early in his career that he had no idea of their legality. He even described in general terms substances he was given for his testy ankle early in his career in his "autobiography" that easily could have been banned substances for all he knew (and readers as well).
There appears to be a group of Americans who are dunderhead Trump supporters which makes them pretty unlikable to me. Self obsessed naive behavior is a separate issue from Trumpism. But perhaps an incurious young player is more susceptible to Trump than one with more native intelligence.
Much is made of Novak being thin- he's always been thin and if you look at the pics closely older and newer, not that much difference. He has always had those legs and butt- I'm picking him to win should he get past Fed, which I think he will. Fed first has to handle Kyrgios who always plays well against the big boys, and Fed is not getting younger.

by Anonymous | reply 223 | August 28, 2018 6:16 PM |
I agree, R210. Many of the ESPN commentators are just fine, but Fowler has got to go. I don't know any tennis fans who like Fowler's commentating.
Although different circumstances, it can happen that a longtime commentator gets the boot. In gymnastics, just this year, Al Trautwig was finally given the boot by NBC in its gymnastics coverage. For years and years gymnastics fans complained about Trautwig (nicknamed TrautPIG) because of his weird comments on the young female gymnasts. One of his most famous statements was that Simone Biles's adopted mother wasn't her "real mother." Outrageous. Then Trautwig gave a sorry-not-sorry "apology." But NBC stuck with him. I think because of the sexual abuse scandals rocking USA Gymnastics, NBC must have realized they needed to maintain credibility with fans, so they booted Trautwig. Now Terry Gannon has replaced him, hopefully for good.
I don't see why ESPN can't boot Fowler. He just doesn't belong commentating on tennis. As someone upthread posted, he NEVER shuts up. I particularly hate when he argues with the former players. Um, say Mr. Fowler, you never played professional tennis. I'd rather hear from them. Funny though how he's always very deferential to Chris Evert. At least he doesn't disrespect the women commentators. But with the guys, it's like he's arguing with his frat buddies after too many beers.

Anisimova only turns 17 in 3 days, and Townsend does have lots of talent. Might be better for Anisimova to rise through the rankings slowly rather than have a big result at this age - she's already hyped enough as it is, and hype seems to have harmed rather than helped most recent US prospects.

While lost on most of the DL membership, straight guys see her as pretty blue-eyed blond with a bangin' bod. Genie is a frat boys dream vacation.
The tennis federations and sponsors of course see the market potential.

I think they should delay matches until 4:00 pm if the heat continues like this and close the roofs on Ashe and Armstrong. All the courts have lights so it isn't a big deal to play late.

I haven't seen Patty on tv in years and have only seen her name in challengers, qualies and small main draw tournaments. She hardly looks any different!! Amazing that she's almost 40 and doesn't look all wrinkly or covered in age spots. She must be 1 of the few Euro players to use sunblock. I was always a fan of her unorthodox game.
BTW Sharapova lost against old Kimiko Date several years ago so while she's the heavy favorite, it wouldn't be a shock if Patty found a way to win.

Travaglia said that in the 4th set (it was the first match on that court, they didn't allow them to have the 10 minutes break after the third) when he was throwing the ball to serve, he was seeing 2-3 balls. I don't know if that's ever been mentioned around here but Fabrice Santoro was asked once who he would have diner with on both the men's and women's tours.
For the men he said Federer (for obvious reasons).
And For the women he said Sharapova. "Why Sharapova?" ventured to ask the journalist. "Because her reputation on the tour is that she's such a cunt, I would love to know to what point this is true" answered the Frenchman.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | August 29, 2018 5:37 PM |
I've always liked Santoro.
It's always been pretty common knowledge the only other female players Sharapova was ever friendly with were the other Russians and some of those didn't always have the nicest things to say about her.
Didn't Myskina say Sharapova couldn't even speak Russian properly or something along those lines?

Medvedev has figured how to play Tsitsipas and it's a leaf straight out of Nadal's book: play everything back on the one-handed backhand till there's a shank. Winning!
by Anonymous | reply 347 | August 29, 2018 6:05 PM |
Wawrinka loves staying at top hotels. He's staying really close to my workplace this year. The players must spend a lot on lodging. I wonder if their sponsors pick up the tab.
by Anonymous | reply 348 | August 29, 2018 6:36 PM |
R348 Often the tournament will pay for accommodation for the top players and their entourages as a kind of stealth appearance fee.
by Anonymous | reply 349 | August 29, 2018 6:41 PM |
R326: You are not blind, he is still superhot.
R348: A lot of tournaments (and of course GS) pay accommodation, and top players are treated like kings. I remember and anecdote of Alberto Costa when he started to play who in a tournament was in a very lavish room at a hotel, he didn't understood why they gave such room to a nobody till he realize that they mistook him for Carlos Costa who was way higher in the ranking back then.
Tsitsipas has bad luck, i think it was a combination of high expectations and playing Medvedev who suddenly realized that he is a next gen with potential too (there were no real reason to him not getting better results till recently)
by Anonymous | reply 350 | August 29, 2018 6:46 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 352 | August 29, 2018 6:49 PM |

Yes, the wonderful Park Hyatt is like 1000 bucks a night. It's is really, really nice if you can afford it.
by Anonymous | reply 353 | August 29, 2018 6:51 PM |
Not all players have their accommodation provided for them, however, which is why so many of them moan about the costs of being on the tour.
Years back when a young and relatively poor Dokic made her breakthrough at Wimbledon, one of the commentators (Andrew Castle? John Inverdale?) got into trouble for suggesting she was staying at a 'bordello' down the road and had to make an on-air apology.

by Anonymous | reply 359 | August 29, 2018 7:09 PM |
R358 I think he was trying to give the audience an idea of how young she was and how big her achievement was so soon after turning pro ie she hadn't yet earned as much as the people she was beating. But 'bordello' is an odd word to use, I'll agree. I think he had to apologise to the hotel/B&B she was staying at.
Unfortunately we've since learned after her loss she ended up trying to stay the night in the locker room as her father was so angry he refused to let her come back to the hotel.

R324 Her ranking is higher than Serena's, and she's the night match on Ashe every damn time. I wouldn't pay a dime to see Serena beat down some nobody. And why does she NEVER have to play a day match? Such an unfair advantage and they do it to protect her (no heat and no sun to contend with on the ball toss). There are plenty of other, much better matches that could've been scheduled for the night match on Ashe.

I have never understood tournament organizers. So, it is 30 mn before the Serena match on Ashe. However, Murray-Verdasco are 3-3 on the fourth. We will probably have a fifth, which means that the stadium has to be emptied for the night session before it can start....and let's forget about Nadal starting at 8:15 approximately.

I was in Brazil once during a grand slam and they were showing their third ranked doubles player over any singles action.
by Anonymous | reply 398 | August 29, 2018 11:07 PM |
I'm watching the Shapovalov match on Canadian television and, let me tell you, it ain't that pretty or high quality. Plenty of errors on both sides in the third set.

I for one, would like to say: FUCK YOU STUPID CUNTS ON ESPN.
I don't want to watch stupid commercials for sports I'll never watch, promos trying to sell me how fucking amazing NY is, montages of Nadal, Serena and fucking trumpet players or commentators at a stupid desk rambling on about bullshit.
I JUST WANT TO WATCH SOME FUCKING TENNIS.
PS anyone subscribe to Tennis TV? Is it worth it?

Deplorable Isner through.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | August 30, 2018 12:35 AM |
Yeah, I hate it when, after a Federer match, they cut away from the action to not only interview roger at length but even waste time showing his journey to the set. They couldn’t wait for a break in the action and at least talk to him while showing the match once it resumes? They sit there giggling about the restaurants he wants to visit while the audience is denied tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 404 | August 30, 2018 12:40 AM |
The women players get to escape the extreme heat in NY with more lenient rules than the men. Typical sexist anti-male bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 405 | August 30, 2018 12:43 AM |
Unfortunately a lot of tennis fans care about the stars so espn wants to focus on the stars over other matches at slams.
Jarry will definitely be making some noise next year. He came close today but Isner was more clutch. Hopefully Isner will be tired out by a long 5 setter in this heat though. I'm so sick of Isner.

What the fresh fuck was that?!! 202 my ass! Muchova played more skillfully than anyone in the top ten by a mile. How does Mugu keep getting shitty scheduling and opponents in the zone? Unreal.

R400 I've had TennisTV for years now, definitely recommend it if you want to see those matches too that rarely make it on TV. Full-match replays are available for a month, and some matches longer. But check the tournament list, there might be georestrictions if some other broadcaster in your country/region has bought the rights for a particular tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 449 | August 30, 2018 1:51 PM |
Muchova played some impressive tennis last night. Some incredible variety. Mugu lost confidence. She should have won that third set.

I find Kyrgios really interesting.
His talent is without doubt but I don't think he's as stupid as people like to think. He's outspoken but seems to have some intelligence up there. He's also alluded to mental health issues before which have to be a big consideration when discussing his 'problems'. I feel a bit sorry for him.
It can't be easy to receive so much criticism so publicly all the time and put a brave face on it or keep silent, especially if he suffers from depression or whatever.

by Anonymous | reply 470 | August 30, 2018 7:23 PM |
no Kyrgios definitely isn't stupid. He is entitled and very easy to check out of matches which is not a top player mentality. He's said before his favorite sport is basketball not tennis. He just happens to be very talented at tennis. He needs a good psychiatrist to sort himself out

Looks like Lahyani, the umpire in the Kyrgios-Herbert match, is going to be in big trouble.
by Anonymous | reply 490 | August 30, 2018 8:54 PM |
Why (didn't watch the entire Kyrgios match)?
by Anonymous | reply 491 | August 30, 2018 8:56 PM |
R491 - He gave Kyrgios a 'pep talk' when it looked like he was about to tank/lose the match. It's up for debate whether it could be interpreted as a warning or described as 'on-court coaching' but most seem to be saying he crossed a line and seemed to favour Kyrgios. Kyrgios went on to win from 4-6 0-3.
It's all over twitter and will be all over the tennis press.
by Anonymous | reply 492 | August 30, 2018 9:01 PM |
Ugh, that's a rather unprofessional thing for an umpire to do.
by Anonymous | reply 493 | August 30, 2018 9:03 PM |
It was clearly a mistake by the umpire, but in a sense I can understand why he did what he did. The weather here has been dire; there have been many retirements and a lot of second-rate matches and uninvolved crowds. I'm sure that the umpire thought it would be bad for the tournament if another player withdrew.
by Anonymous | reply 494 | August 30, 2018 9:11 PM |
Bouchard lost to Marketa Vondrousová
by Anonymous | reply 495 | August 30, 2018 9:13 PM |
R494 - That doesn't make what he did right. The conditions have been dire for all players. None of the other umpires intervened and told any of the withdrawing players to buck their ideas up.
I understand where you're coming from but what I've read from the transcripts I've seen so far suggests where he should have been giving a warning, instead he was telling him 'you're a better player than this' etc which is a pep talk moving into on-court coaching territory. It completely oversteps the line of impartiality. Did he do the same for Herbert when it looked like Kyrgios had turned things around?
by Anonymous | reply 496 | August 30, 2018 9:16 PM |
It wasn't that hot today. I'm in NYC. There is at least a breeze today compared to the last 2 days where it was oppressive, unbearable. It wasn't as humid either.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | August 30, 2018 9:50 PM |
I also think the ump is wrong and something is fishy, I wonder if he bet on the game.
by Anonymous | reply 498 | August 30, 2018 9:52 PM |
The statement the US Open has made about what Lahyani said to Kyrgios doesn't correlate with what journalists and others on twitter managed to pick up from the microphones. Also Herbert complained about it in his presser.
The statement says he was asking if he needed medical attention but that's not what people picked up from the coverage. I'd be so pissed off right now if I were Herbert. He's lost $60k losing this match that he was winning until the umpire got involved.
by Anonymous | reply 499 | August 30, 2018 9:57 PM |
Nick Kyrgios is so fucking WEAK, mentally!
by Anonymous | reply 500 | August 30, 2018 10:00 PM |
I'm not sure that Lahyani's actions altered the outcome of the match but he needs to be sanctioned for highly unprofessional behavior. He's actually quite prone to questionable things, often blurring the lines between himself and the players, plus he's known for his diva-like behavior, unparalleled by other ATP Tour umpires. It is a Slam, not some local 14-under tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | August 30, 2018 10:02 PM |
He should be suspended at least. So unfair to the other player. Maybe if the other player made a stink, then they would look into punishment for the umpire. But it would just look like he's being a sore loser if he complained. However, I bet Andy Murray wouldn't let it slide...he loves to complain lol.
by Anonymous | reply 502 | August 30, 2018 10:05 PM |
R501 - What do you mean by 'diva-like behaviour'? I know Lahyani is a bit of a personality on the tour but haven't seen anything too outrageous before. I thought he was always professional.
And now Federer has had his say: It's not the umpire's role to go down from the chair. You don't go and speak like that in my opinion. He was there for too long. Conversations can change your mindset.
by Anonymous | reply 503 | August 30, 2018 10:06 PM |
Lahyani was ridiculous. "I want to help you". Seriously? Some people need to stop talking about Kyrgios like he is just a kid who needs guidance. He's 23.
Lahyani is popular but he knows it. Stay in the chair and did what your paid for instead of trying to be centre stage.
by Anonymous | reply 505 | August 30, 2018 10:10 PM |
R502 - Herbert has complained in his presser and I don't think this will be the last we'll hear on the matter from the US Open. I can't see Lahyani getting away with this. Herbert should have said something at the time, perhaps called out the supervisor or something, but I'd say he probably didn't think at the time Kyrgios was going going to turn the match around and win.
I've defended Kyrgios before but his tweets toward Donna Vekic this evening were too much. One was deleted but the other one has stayed up and they were both unnecessarily personal.

He has no chance against Roger. The Umpire just gifted him about150 k. I think that's what he gets for making it to the next round...
by Anonymous | reply 508 | August 30, 2018 10:16 PM |
R508 - The first tweet was up for about a minute and said something along the lines of "Still salty you're out of the US Open?" and the second said it was ironic she'd tweeted about the on-court coaching since she receives on-court coaching every single week of the year. Both of these were direct replies to Vekic. Maybe she'll block him now.
You'd think he'd have an agent or someone to tell him to get off his phone. He seems to spend more time on twitter than he does on the court.

Brad Gilbert and Paul Anacone just referred to Tenys Sandgren's alt-right and homophobic views. Their tone inferred they were calling bullshit on the prepared apology.
by Anonymous | reply 534 | August 31, 2018 1:12 AM |
R534 can you elaborate further? Also I thought Gilbert is on espn and Annacone is on Tennis Channel?
by Anonymous | reply 535 | August 31, 2018 1:14 AM |
They did it in Canada.
by Anonymous | reply 536 | August 31, 2018 1:23 AM |
Brad Gilbert is very left-wing.
by Anonymous | reply 537 | August 31, 2018 1:25 AM |
Brad Gilbert comes across as a good bloke on social media but he can't write for shit.
by Anonymous | reply 538 | August 31, 2018 1:26 AM |
R535 It could have been Patrick McEnroe. It's difficult for me to tell their voices apart. Anyway, they gave the short story on TS' tweets, and their tone. Then Patrick McEnroe in a very skeptical tone said "He then held a press conference with a VERY prepared statement" and then Brad and Patrick talked about how the kerfuffle really harmed TS' results. There seemed to be a bit of schadenfreude in the way they presented their opinions.
by Anonymous | reply 539 | August 31, 2018 1:28 AM |
I hope Brad is more on the liberal side. He seems like likable person to me and funny as well as an obvious expert in tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 540 | August 31, 2018 1:35 AM |
'Tennis Twitter' has gone very silent over the Sandgren match. He's loathed.
by Anonymous | reply 541 | August 31, 2018 1:36 AM |
Glenn Greenwald is probably cheering now.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | August 31, 2018 1:37 AM |
R541, with good reason. He seems intolerant and hostile.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | August 31, 2018 1:37 AM |
Well Nole isn't very popular either on twitter.
by Anonymous | reply 544 | August 31, 2018 1:39 AM |
Nole is like a saint compared to Sandgren. Both on twitter and real life.
Actually I've never noticed any real dislike for Nole apart from that stupid celebration gesture he does to all four sides of the crowd.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | August 31, 2018 1:42 AM |
Nole!

Novak is a hardcore Serbian nationalist but I don't know if he's conservative or not beyond that topic. Sandgren obviously is a typical deplorable piece of shit
by Anonymous | reply 550 | August 31, 2018 2:14 AM |
Oh fuck off R550
by Anonymous | reply 551 | August 31, 2018 2:15 AM |
R551 go fuck yourself. What I said about Djokovic is the truth and you know that. Not sure why that riled you up.
by Anonymous | reply 552 | August 31, 2018 2:17 AM |
R549 he did it unsolicited. Saying that night matches were the most special of all. Even awkward Angie Kerber earlier was going on about how great Ashe is despite not being asked about it....
by Anonymous | reply 553 | August 31, 2018 2:24 AM |
Nole is gay-friendly (remember that (fan) boy's marriage proposal to him and his reaction?) and I doubt he is particularly conservative in general.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | August 31, 2018 2:26 AM |
R553, Kerber and Nole know the drill: pander to the provincial New Yorkers (although Nole got in a bit of shade about how the crowd was blabbing away even when he was serving).

HI gays! What an Ab Fab US Open this one is turning out to be". Me and the girls, Martina, Renee, Billie Jean, Sammy, and that super sweet Frankie Schiavone all had drinks, fruity ones, after the Muggie upset last night. We had such a blast just being regular girls at a bar in the Meat Packing District. We ooed, we awed and just enjoying the slim, toned gals killing it out there. And all the hot guys are still around. It's stinks we lost cutie pie Grigor and sexy assed Andy but we still have Rafa, Domi "Sweet Cakes", Diego and that burning hunk of love Carlo Navorro. What a dream boat!!! My lower regions just shift with the sight of that musky stallion galloping around the court. He had quite the scare today but ultimately was able to slay the dragon by mustering every ounce of testosterone he was blessed with. After the bar we went back to my hotel to work on some new pattern blankets we've been applying scissors to so we could make one bigger blanket. It's a hobby we started years back. We always have such a ball. We laugh, tell dirty jokes and have drinks hand over fist. Just being gal pals!! Can't wait to see what crazy ole thing we'll get into after Maria's match. We love New York!!! Holla!

Why does Fed get love from any gay person? Do people not know of his $40 million deal with the vile Barilla Pasta Company run by one of the most homophobic European families? His boyfriend, Swiss Davis Cup captain wears the Barilla cap during his matches which proves Fed puts it off on someone else, while he just does lame tv commercials for the company that air in Europe. Fed is the ultimate phony. I'm sure Mirka enjoys this deal more than he does.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | August 31, 2018 9:07 AM |
Sad that no one is surprised Woz lost to Tsurenko. I saw Tsurenko beat Mugu at Cincy and was unimpressed by her game, though she got the ball back all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | August 31, 2018 9:37 AM |
I saw PHH (lose, alas) yesterday. God DAMN he is sexy in person.
Shapo and KA could be good today. And Borna / Medvedev.

Sandgren’s girlfriend is the deplorable sports reporter Britt McHenry, who is about as bad as one gets. So all these claims that Tennys’ old teeets reflected someone who was just exploring ideas is nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | August 31, 2018 11:42 AM |
PHH? Damn, Hebert is a cutie.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | August 31, 2018 11:43 AM |
Thanks for the info, R571. I'll look into Britt. Because I'm one of the rare posters on the tennis threads who thinks Sandgren is super hot, especially since that hideous MULLET was removed, I wanted to believe his statements about growing were accurate and sincere. I hope I'm still right. That being said, I missed most of his Nole match last night, joining early in the third set. I do trust Brad Gilbert and Pat McEnroe assessments, and if they were calling BS, I tend to believe them. Too bad, because as I said, I like looking at his hot bod and enjoy the hussle of his game....but that being said, there are SO many other hot and entertaining players.
Side observation about his match last night: I kept noticing that he didn't change his shirt on court (as I navigate the television cameras), and when he headed off court, a commentator noted that Nole was questioning the umpire about that. I wonder if Sandgren is SO spooked by any potential scrutinty of his body (after Australia), that he isn't going to knowingly provide any opportunity for comments...or, sadly, worse, doesn't want to turn on some gay guy.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | August 31, 2018 12:48 PM |
It was odd that he left court to change his shirt. Maybe he has some alt-right tattoos.

Britt McHenry wants everyone to know there’s more to Tennys Sandgren than his Trump-loving tweets.
McHenry, who is set to join Fox News next month, told The Post that her boyfriend Sandgren is actually one of the “nicest guys you’ll ever meet” despite his controversial political views, which have plagued him all year long on the ATP tour. McHenry has had her own share of controversies since breaking into the sports journalism spotlight, including behavior that got her suspended from ESPN in 2015 and a tweet suggesting ESPN fired her last year her because she’s “conservative.”
“I would say this about anybody, whether it’s NFL draft picks or tweets from seven years ago, my thing that happened three years ago — I know since he’s explained to me — that a lot has been taken out of context,” McHenry said in the bleachers during Sandgren’s first-round match at the US Open.
Sandgren, 26, had his breakout moment in January when he advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, but his underdog story blew up after anti-gay tweets he posted in 2012 resurfaced. He apologized after the tournament — his best result at a major over his seven-year career — and has since deleted the tweets, saying that he holds no “alt-right views.”
McHenry, no stranger to Twitter beef herself, learned her social media lesson after a video of her berating a towing company employee went viral three years ago. ESPN suspended her for a week at the time before cutting ties with her in 2017 amid the massive layoffs at the network.

According to USTA spokesman, Lahyani will not be sanctioned because of his exemplary track record in spite of what happened yesterday. Each of his matches will be monitored, just like all chair empires.

Sloane Stephens is the defending champ and has yet to play under the lights, but Serena has played all of her matches ( while looking like a character from the movie Fantasia) so far in prime time. Just ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | August 31, 2018 4:23 PM |
R584 I like Sloane but shes a defending champion of so far her only slam vs a 23 major legend of the sport.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | August 31, 2018 4:26 PM |
Come on, Sloane...put that stinking hooter down fast.
by Anonymous | reply 586 | August 31, 2018 4:27 PM |
To be honest, for all the hype, Williams^2 matches have almost never truly lived up to their potential. Sloane vs Azarenka will probably be a better match if Sloane mentally shows up for it.
by Anonymous | reply 587 | August 31, 2018 4:28 PM |
Venus vs Serena usually makes for a bit of a dull match.

by Anonymous | reply 590 | August 31, 2018 4:36 PM |
yes, I remember that video. She is a real piece of work and pretty stupid too. She was told she was being video taped and yet she continues...
She was suspended for 1 week after this came out...
gonna work for foxnews now...where she will fit right in!

by Anonymous | reply 595 | August 31, 2018 4:55 PM |
I like Venus, but it's pretty clear she doesn't try all that much to beat Serena when they play.
by Anonymous | reply 596 | August 31, 2018 4:57 PM |
Serena can barely move, so Venus has no excuse to lose.
by Anonymous | reply 597 | August 31, 2018 5:04 PM |
R597, other than Serena is younger and has always been much more talented than Venus. I as so sick of hearing the commentators make a big deal of the fact they are sisters. So what? Who isn't more competitive with their siblings than with pretty much anyone else? Chris Evert is the absolute worst about droning on and on and on about it.
by Anonymous | reply 598 | August 31, 2018 5:15 PM |
Yes, it's so sad that Venus has a paltry seven Slams, R598. She also got the greater class and grace and intelligence of the two while her sister got dibs for obnoxious catsuited GOAT.
by Anonymous | reply 599 | August 31, 2018 5:25 PM |
Vika should be up 5-1 in this second set -- so many gifts on big points. Now she finally gets ahead and the delay to close the roof is going to kill her momentum. I hope she doesn't screw this up because Sloane's defensive lollipop tennis annoys me.
