Is a dollar surcharge/fee for debit card use unusual?

I was out shopping yesterday and stopped a t a Carl's Jr. for a bite to eat. I ordered a hamburger and the total was just under $5. I realized I didn't have enough cash so I pulled out my debit card only to be informed that it would be a $1 charge. What?! Carl's Jr. is a large chain, not some mom and pop burger stand that can't absorb too many transaction fees. The cashier helpfully informed me that a credit card fee would be only 25 cents. Hmm. I told her it was ridiculous and just cancelled the order and left. The area I live in has a huge homeless population many of whom receive SSI benefits on debit cards. I guess the restaurant doesn't want them hanging around their establishment, but FFS a dollar fee? I don't know if it's a company-wide policy or particular to this location. But, seriously? Has anyone heard of such a high fee? Yeah, yeah, before I hear it, I should have more cash on me...

You need to remind them that charging a fee for credit card usage is an absolute no-no according to credit card company rules. Tell them you'll turn them in and they will lose their allowance to accept credit cards.

Nope, never happens here in Norway. Debit card transactions are free. Most Norwegians use a debit card. I think we are one of the top debit card using countries in the world. Hardly anyone pays with cash anymore.

by Anonymousreply 2August 23, 2018 9:35 PM

I've heard the same thing about Denmark, met a student who says she never carries cash. So, Norway, if you just wanted to buy a candy bar at a convenience store, you could pay with your card?

by Anonymousreply 3August 23, 2018 9:41 PM

Many mom and pop stores have a minimum credit card $$ amount but they can't charge you if it's below their minimum. You just need to cough up the cash.

by Anonymousreply 4August 23, 2018 9:42 PM

[quote]Carl's Jr. is a large chain, not some mom and pop burger stand that can't absorb too many transaction fees.

Most Carl's Jr. stores are franchised, and therefore ARE mom-and-pop burger stands. Unless of course they're company-owned or owned by a franchisee with multiple locations.

ARCO has always charged for using debit cards at their gas stations. I just refuse to patronize places like that.

by Anonymousreply 5August 23, 2018 9:54 PM

I never use card. always cash! Cash is KING! You people probably have been hacked many times and don't even know it coz the companies never disclose until years later.

by Anonymousreply 6August 23, 2018 9:56 PM

Carl's Jr. is run by a bunch of right-wingers anyway. Go somewhere else.

by Anonymousreply 7August 23, 2018 10:07 PM

r6 Too bad you're missing out on all of the cash back rewards. Discover is giving 5% back on restaurants this quarter.

by Anonymousreply 8August 23, 2018 10:32 PM

I've never used a debit card in my life, except at an ATM. I use credit cards most of the time, but also use cash for smaller purchases. I really hate the idea that you can trace my movements and activities on a daily basis just looking at my credit card statements. Some companies don't accept certain credit cards, so I keep that in mind, of course.

by Anonymousreply 9August 23, 2018 10:45 PM

I only use credit cards but never pay fees. Sometimes, there is a fee if the transaction is below a certain sum, but I try not to buy at those places.

by Anonymousreply 10August 24, 2018 12:07 AM

There are far fewer protections when you use a debit card vs. a credit card. I only use my debit card for withdrawing cash at the ATM.

by Anonymousreply 11August 24, 2018 12:39 AM

R1 is correct. They aren't supposed to be charging fees, it's against the credit company rules. Turn the store in to Carl's Jr. Corporate and report it to Visa or MasterCard.

by Anonymousreply 12August 24, 2018 12:44 AM

It is disgusting....Stores should not be able to charge service fees regardless of the amount. I refuse to shop at any store that charges

by Anonymousreply 13August 24, 2018 12:46 AM

r1

No, that used to be the case, but MC/VS and Amex reached a deal in 2014, where stores were allowed to charge UP TO 4% (but never more than the actual cost of processing) of the total.

Some states, such as Arizona forbid fees for credit / debit cards.

But even when the rules which forbid such charges were in place, there was virtually no way to enforce them. The only thing a processor could do was take away your merchant account, and as a person that worked 20+ years, I can say I never heard of once instance where that happened, even when it was out and out fraud.

The card issuers charge stores a lot to process CREDIT cards.

ARCO is pretty unique. It’s “almost” a cash only gas station. Not taking credit cards saves them a ton of money. As a result, their price per gallon for gas is almost always the lowest: sometimes five or ten cents less, per gallon, than their competitors.

It costs a little bit for US stores to process DEBIT cards. So, it’s the only non-cash option ARCO allows. They pass on a flat fee (35¢) to those who use them.

If you buy more than six gallons of gas, ARCO is probably still cheaper than their competitors. The savings per gallon more than makes up for the 35¢ fee. ARCO is cheaper still if you use cash.

Using credit cards enriches banks. The credit card fees you don’t see drives up the price of everything stores sell.

by Anonymousreply 15August 24, 2018 9:29 AM

R1 I tried to employ that tactic at a gas station ten years ago, they were not amused and told me they had an ATM. It obviously had a fatter fee. I ended up purchasing extra shit I don't need to avoid the fee. There was a small bodega in my neighbourhood that used to have a twenty dollar minimum. They have done away with the fee.

[quote]I never use card. always cash! Cash is KING! You people probably have been hacked many times and don't even know it coz the companies never disclose until years later.

So...you must be the ONLY person in the world that’s never been hacked, right? Good thing the ONLY WAY to get hacked is by using a card, mom. GTFOH

Well, yeah...otherwise a lot of places would be under investigation. I mean...my doctor’s office charges a dollar every time I use my debit card. I NEVER carry cash--a bad habit I know, but it’s just not as convenient as using my card. Sure, I care about getting hacked, but if it happens...it happens. I check my financials pretty regularly like we ALL should. I'm not worried about being charged an additional dollar or two--depending on the amount of my purchase.

Fuck if I’m going to spend my life worrying about getting hacked EVERY TIME I leave the house. Somethings are unavoidable--just try and not make it too easy for them. I avoid ATMs as much as possible, but I just can't be ruled by ANOTHER set of "What ifs" y'know? Otherwise, I'd NEVER leave the house.

Oh, and if you’re under the impression that you’ve never been hacked--in anyway--you’re fucking delusional.

Wow, there are a lot of Old Peopleisms in this thread. "Cash is king"? "Debit cards are less safe than credit cards"? You people are going to absolutely lose your minds when Amazon rolls out their employee-less grocery stores, and you pay for everything using NFC and your phone...pretty soon people will be looking at you in disgust and sympathy when you hand them dirty pieces of paper with dead presidents printed on them 🤣😂

by Anonymousreply 18August 24, 2018 2:07 PM

I don't want your sweaty bra money, R18.

by Anonymousreply 19August 24, 2018 2:13 PM

They will be dropped by all banks and credit card companies, OP. This is a very strict policy, and a national chain like Carl’s Jr. does not want this kind of publicity.

by Anonymousreply 20August 24, 2018 2:36 PM

Cash is king? Lol. Are you living in the 1800s? Christ, this site is full of psychotic apocalypse preppers and weirdos.

They're nearly always more expensive than Costco or Sam's Club, where I can use a credit card AND get 4% or 5% back in cash rewards.

by Anonymousreply 22August 24, 2018 3:26 PM

[quote]The card issuers charge stores a lot to process CREDIT cards.

Yes and it is a percentage of the purchase, generally.

by Anonymousreply 23August 24, 2018 3:28 PM

Which is retarded i.e. greedy esp. when their systems are almost 100% automated where it counts.
