Nostalgia-inducing songs of the 2000s
Based on the joy I derived from the 90s music thread, let’s discuss songs of the aughts. The rules: just good songs, no other rules. I would personally most treasure songs that we knew then and don’t necessarily play a lot now—Confessions on a Dancefloor stuff, for example, is super familiar—but so as to avoid triggering semantics-based freakouts, let’s just say anything goes!
Remember this one from 2001?

Tori’s last radio-ready single and her last popular hit. I never liked the video, but the song is an exquisite contradiction in sound and meaning.

Maybe it's because she died soon after or because the album was released just a few months before 9/11 (and the two are sort of linked in my memory), but this song always transports me back to the Summer of 2001:
(P.S. I'm so glad we've moved past these ugly VR, overly CGI'd/green screen music videos that were so popular in the early 2000s)

R29, I disagree. I used to feel the same way, but the older I get, the more the aughts grow on me. It was a really odd in-between time on lots of different levels. It’s more challenging than the 90’s, less cliche, because it’s almost forgettable. It’s like an era that never was. It exists in my mind as a kind of dream and oddly that makes it all the more mysterious and compelling.

Also Y2K. I saw this Norwegian-British Europop group, A1, perform at G-A-Y (a club in London) during a study abroad at Cambridge. This cover of A-ha’s song went number one in the UK that year; of course it’s unknown here in the US. The video is silly but it’s a pretty good cover.

R47 Sophie still makes music. She had a baby and stuff, but I think she still tours around Britian. She never broke through in the US. I never knew why. It may have to do with her accent, which is strong when she sings unlike many British singers, who seem to sound more American when they sing.
This is my favorite Sophie song.

I think this is a perfect-perfect dance song. When it came out, though, I was so confused because I honestly thought she was a drag queen but I couldn’t quite make sense of her. I am embarrassed to admit I found out about Lady Gaga through Perez Hilton’s blog, and I was a very early adopter. I had tickets to her first concert at a small venue in DC. She abruptly canceled the day before for alleged illness, and she performed live the next night on American Idol, which was sort of her first big mainstream boost. She rescheduled her concert for about six months later at a much bigger venue, and she was *two hours* late, not taking the stage until 10:00.

I loved Avril Lavigne's debut album, Let Go, as a teen. I remember feeling like the follow-up was taking FOREVER, even though it was less than two years. As an adult, I now know the pain of waiting seven years for a new Fiona Apple album. Unfortunately, by the time she released Under My Skin I had outgrown her somewhat, so it was a bit of a let-down. I still remember reading interviews with her during that era where she kept banging on about wanting to record more credible rock music, which is ironic as hell in hindsight, considering she went on to release "Girlfriend" a few years later. To say nothing of "Hello Kitty", which is far more juvenile than anything she recorded as a teenager...

r38, I think the decade is hard to pin down because it was sort of identity-less for so long. No one could decide what it was called or how it should be referred. The whole 00s decade was kind of dazed and rudderless from the start given that it basically kicked off with 9/11 and ended with the Great Recession. This decade has felt even less defined and anchored. The Obama years now seem like a fog and Trump will definitely go down as the greatest disaster of the 2010s. The 90s seems like a Shangri-La compared to the past two decades.

We are talking 18 years here, so it is hard to sum up with any one song. I think of my life in eras usually and this song was the beginning of my life in Los Angeles. When I hear it, my mind floods with memories of the difficult cross-country move, the amazing new scenery, beautiful hills, ugly strip malls, trashy Hollywood streets (who knew? I was expecting Brentwood for some reason), gorgeous Malibu beach vistas, Drop dead Bel Air and BH streets, a beautiful but small 2/2 that could only hold half of my furniture (I had to CL the rest), Griffith Park and the views of the city, how huge,/endless/generally ugly the Valley really is, The Grove, Bar Marmont, SMOG that really does haze over everything, jarring traffic, amazing new restaurants/bars and even the new clothes - black v necks, skinny jeans, bright hoodies and neon Ray Bans (Dallas was an entirely different look and one that I was ready to shed..). All of the anxiety seems so distant now, but at the time it was a brave new world. Oh, and I love Lana Del Rey anyway:

OMG....
I'm no fan of the 2000s (I think music peaked in the late 90s) but it's obvious that so many posters either slept through the decade or didn't have a finger on the pulse of what was popular then. With a few rare exceptions (Outkast, Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, etc.), seems like people are posting a bunch of obscure artists or obscure songs from artists who were more popular in the 1990s.
I mean, how could no one remember Coldplay, the first major act to break out in the 2000s?

Liked this song because of the Fall Out Boy sung chorus, but Travie Mccoy was always yuck to me.
Katy Perry is in this video. Didn't know who she was when this song was a hit though.

The indie scene was great in the 00's. Interpol, Bright Eyes, Postal Service, Arcade Fire, and so many more. You had to dig to find the great bands, but with the advent of napster, youtube, bit torrent and itunes it made it so damn easy.

I love you, R171! I can't believe I forgot that amazing track. Remember how in the late 90s and early 2000s, a lot of car commercials were using amazing EDM tracks (or what we used to call electronica)? There was even website dedicated to helping people track down songs.

The Radio Department was the sound of the aughts, to me. Lucid-dreamy, the sound of rainy day ennui. Everything they make sounds like the nostalgia, manifest.

Anyone remember some of the 120 minute (show on Fuse or MTV or something) videos? It was usually Felix da Housecat, this guy singing a love song (but zany) while running around a track, and this other one that went “we are not a rock band, but we rock the house” and the people in the video did this funny chicken wing dance.

And there was another one with a girl singing “sail away” but it wasn’t Enya. Montage of cityscapes in video.
Another was a fast paced techno song. In the video a man and a woman were chasing someone or running away. Then, the two women pair up and double cross the man and kiss at the end on a getaway boat (lesbians) 😱 so shocking at the time, lol!
