Any good Fire Island stories?

I have never been, but this time of year I start seeing pictures and hearing stories of what goes down. Seems like a bunch of pornstars rubbing shoulders with b-list celebrities and everyone's screwing everyone else. Anyone have any good stories to share from this summer hedonistic Paradise?

by Anonymousreply 149September 10, 2018 4:12 AM

You’ve never been? Why?

by Anonymousreply 1August 18, 2018 1:27 PM

This seems like a very odd specific quest, OP. You weren't unable to find anything similar online?

by Anonymousreply 2August 18, 2018 1:32 PM

R1 because I'm one of those gays that has no disposal income and lives paycheck-to-paycheck

by Anonymousreply 3August 18, 2018 1:33 PM

R2 it seems like it attracts the people that DL talks about the most. Gay celebrities and pornstars

by Anonymousreply 4August 18, 2018 1:34 PM

I went once on a day trip. Beautiful day. Unbeknownst to me, JFK Jr. had perished the evening before.

I was in Cherry Grove and the Pines and saw absolutely nothing out of the ordinary: just a bunch of people enjoying the beach and beautiful surroundings on a beautiful, summer day.

by Anonymousreply 5August 18, 2018 1:39 PM

R3, don’t most gays go because they know someone and stay at their house? I know lots of “poors” who manage to get an invite.

by Anonymousreply 6August 18, 2018 1:41 PM

I worked there one summer, long ago, in the WASP enclave of Point O'Woods. Rather than getting to discover megadong down the island, I met another waiter at POW, and we shacked up for the summer, in a closety, WASPy way. There was a boy from my hometown there who hated me, and I couldn't let him find out. I was schadenfreuded out of my mind a year later when the boy who hated me's family business went bankrupt and they had to move to an apartment. Not something that happened very often in our little corner of New Jersey.

by Anonymousreply 7August 18, 2018 1:51 PM

R6 maybe. But I live in the middle of Tennessee and don't know any wealthy gay guys with houses on Fire Island

by Anonymousreply 8August 18, 2018 1:51 PM

Two of my friends went into a k-hole walking home in the rain. They cowered in the only phone booth in the Pines.

One time in the meat rack I got most satisfyingly bukkaked. Bukkake isn't really my thing but I thoroughly enjoyed that one and went for a dip to wash it all off, clean to return my share with completely unnecessary dignity.

I was at a party at an A-list new contemporary mansion in the 80's talking to some opera queens and I pronounced Handel wrong. It became my knickname.

I went to the Belvedere with a new Swedish lover who insisted. He loved it in a completely non-judgmental way foreigners do, when they don't understand another culture's kitsch.

by Anonymousreply 9August 18, 2018 2:26 PM

B list? Lol. You’re cute.

by Anonymousreply 10August 18, 2018 2:37 PM

Enjoy it now while you can cunts, because it’s about a decade from being completely washed away.

by Anonymousreply 11August 18, 2018 2:38 PM

Any run ins with celebrities?

by Anonymousreply 12August 18, 2018 2:41 PM

I know you said celebrities, but I thought Mario Van Peebles was a regular.

by Anonymousreply 13August 18, 2018 2:43 PM

I know people like Billy Santoro, Michael Lucas, Josh Barro, Michael Kors etc are all regulars

by Anonymousreply 14August 18, 2018 3:07 PM

R9’s phone booth story was a good one.

by Anonymousreply 15August 18, 2018 3:27 PM

What happened to Patrick McDonald from the Fire Island reality show? Used to date Jeffrey Self then did a couple of hardcore bareback gangbang videos last year. He looked fucked up in the scenes. Obviously on a shit ton of drugs. A month after he did porn he deleted everything off of social media. No more scenes. No tweets. No statement. Nothing. Anyone know wjat happened? Rehab?

by Anonymousreply 16August 18, 2018 10:30 PM

You meant d and f list right Op-??

by Anonymousreply 17August 18, 2018 10:34 PM

Lindsay Lohan is pimping Patrick in Mykonos. Beach House is a prostitution front for prostitution and human trafficking.

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2018 10:35 PM

R17 nothing is too low for DL

by Anonymousreply 19August 18, 2018 10:36 PM

R18 sounds plausible

by Anonymousreply 20August 18, 2018 10:36 PM

How much porn has been filmed on the Island? I saw Jack Mackenroth is filming there this week

by Anonymousreply 21August 18, 2018 10:47 PM

Acme Pest and Vermin Control of North Bay Shore will be fumigating there next week.

by Anonymousreply 22August 18, 2018 10:55 PM

Is it like a docked gay cruise?

by Anonymousreply 23August 18, 2018 10:59 PM

Pretty vapid selfinvolved rich people and their hangers on. I presume you're talking the Pines. Many other little communities on Fire Island.

by Anonymousreply 24August 18, 2018 11:00 PM

R24 yeah, the Pines specifically

by Anonymousreply 25August 18, 2018 11:02 PM

Half the instagays in the world are there this weekend with a ton of pornstars and a few celebrities (actors/writers/bloggers/tv personalities)

by Anonymousreply 26August 18, 2018 11:04 PM

Didn't someone on DL see Barro getting passed around a Pines party recently?

by Anonymousreply 27August 18, 2018 11:05 PM

Ewwwww is that why that queen Mackenroth was there?

by Anonymousreply 28August 18, 2018 11:11 PM

Michael Lucas just film there.

by Anonymousreply 29August 18, 2018 11:16 PM

R29 gross and double gross at that project runway freak

by Anonymousreply 30August 18, 2018 11:17 PM

I imagine Santoro and Lucas (or the guys working for them) hookup with celebrities and they secretly film it.

by Anonymousreply 31August 18, 2018 11:22 PM

Each STAR of the Lucas film earns 300 dollars + travel costs, accommodation, food and a 100 dollar voucher to the Pines Pantry, a bottle of generic Truvada, 5 complimentary Caverject kits for their recreational use, and drink tickets.

by Anonymousreply 32August 18, 2018 11:24 PM

No wonder they need to escort. I made more in a week at age 14 just mowing the neighbors lawn. And I didn't have to get fucked by Michael Lucas

by Anonymousreply 33August 18, 2018 11:26 PM

I did a half share in the Pines for a few years with the same group of guys. We were a bit unusual by FI standards in that we never hooked up with each other and came back as a group every year. Most housemates I observed barely made it to Labor Day without at least one, usual multiple, dust ups. There was a saying along the lines of “if you’re still friends with your housemates after the summer, consider yourself blessed.”

Anyway, the Pines really is a beautiful and unique location. Loved every minute from getting on the ferry that I spent there. Yes, there was plenty of sex to be had. You could meet someone at one of teas, on the beach during the day, at a house party, at Sip n Twirl, etc.. It wasn’t all orgies either - plenty of guys just looking for regular no strings fun one-on-one. I happily remember a number of one-on-ones and even a few repeat performers.

As for “celebrities”, I remember running into Tuc Watkins, Carson Kressley, Michael Lucas, and even Patrick MacDonald (aka the NYC Dandy) along with some other guys from porn and news broadcast guys. Majority of these guys were charming, would have drinks, a cigarette, a nice chat with you.

It’s been years since I’ve been there - one of my housemates actually bought the house we rented a few years later and is always asking - but I’d rather remember it as my days as the tall, hairy, muscular bottom vs going out now as the 40-something hairy beefy bottom bearish guy lol

Now, summers in Amagansett does me just fine.

by Anonymousreply 34August 18, 2018 11:27 PM

R34 kinda sad that it's a place where you feel out of place now. Is P-Town less superficial?

by Anonymousreply 35August 18, 2018 11:31 PM

R34 humblebrag +++

Back in the 80s there was a older man named Norman (passed in 2003 or 2004) who was a patron on the NYC Ballet and always had some of the most beautiful ballet dancers staying with him. I was a neighbor of his in the West Village and would be invited on several weekends each summer and remember some of the hottest sex of my life with these dancers, who were mostly shy and usually came back to the house after drinks and disco all horned up. These guys were all bottoms and very sexual and taught this top a lot.

by Anonymousreply 37August 18, 2018 11:35 PM

Oh dear R34, your leaving FIP for AMAG possibly improved both places. Now please keep away for TMBeach, enough hairy fat ones bring down the area.

by Anonymousreply 38August 18, 2018 11:38 PM

Nadir of shallow gay-clone culture.

by Anonymousreply 39August 18, 2018 11:39 PM

R35 - like any gay enclave, there always has been and I’m sure always will be those who judge - whether it be on looks, profession, money, etc. - and yes, often times being judged can make you feel excluded. But that wasn’t the reason I stopped going to FI. I don’t care if someone thinks I do or don’t fit in somewhere. It was the whole party atmosphere that became a bit much. As I got older and matured, I wanted a place to relax vs a place to party. If I was still going to FI, I’d no doubt be pregaming right now before going out vs relaxing after dinner with some drinks and a movie with my guests out here.

R36 - what on earth was “humblebragging” about my post? The OP asked what FI was like, what kind of things went on, what celebrities were met, and I gave my experience. Hardly bragging humble or otherwise.

R37 - I think I may remember your friend - was his house on the bay towards the Water Island end?

R38 - aren’t you precious. Have you ever been to either as more than a guest? Probably not. You can have Two Mile Hollow (I’m guessing that’s what you meant by “TMBeach”), why would I drive to that scene when I can walk a few minutes down the road to the beach here? Only on DL is weighing 237 at a smidge over 6’2” considered “fat” lol

R42 thanks for sharing. Never been and probably never will. I'm not a big fan of parties

by Anonymousreply 45August 19, 2018 1:17 AM

Oh is fire island that resort location where all the homosexuals go?

by Anonymousreply 46August 19, 2018 1:23 AM

R9, your mention of the Belvedere sent chills up my spine. I stayed there for a weekend twenty years ago on my first visit to Fire Island. The most disgusting place I've ever been. We arrived last at night, and i don't think anyone had stayed in my room since the previous year. I discovered upon pulling back my sheets that a mouse had made a nest in my pillow. I couldn't rouse the ancient cryptkeeper of an owner, so I had a clean as best i could and sleep with my head at the other end of the bed. When i was able to report it the following morning, the owner just laughed and said he should charge me more for having had extra guests in the room (the mice). Horrendous.

by Anonymousreply 47August 19, 2018 2:05 AM

Testy, testy R34, yeah he got to you. Just how mature are you. 60-?

by Anonymousreply 48August 19, 2018 3:17 AM

True story. Around 1985 a friend rented a winterized house for the holidays and invited several friends. I had to arrange a private ferry ride out there in a December. I remember it was like $50, which was a lot of money for a poor twink like me. And it was the big ferry that ran in the summer. Seeing as the captain was in the front of the ship steering, I went to the back end of the boat, by myself, through out my arms and sang “Don’t Rain on my Parade.”

by Anonymousreply 49August 19, 2018 4:10 AM

Was Fire Island at all appealing for Christmas? How was the house?

by Anonymousreply 50August 19, 2018 4:14 AM

Fire Island is better than the Hamptons. When I was last there, there was a gay guy who decided to be bisexual for fun. He pit his boyfriend against his new girlfriend, and the fighting between the two went on for forever. He sat back and enjoyed it, Don’t know what happened by summer’s end, as I was no longer there. But if either had any dignity, they should have dumped him and his cruelty.

by Anonymousreply 51August 19, 2018 9:05 AM

R34. Yes, Norman's house was bay side. Not very big, 3 bedrooms, no pool, cozy is best way to describe.

by Anonymousreply 52August 19, 2018 10:34 AM

It was fun back in the day. I was there in my late 20s early 30s, we were young and hot. Dancing till dawn, days passed out on the beach. Impromptu drag shows. Lots of sex. That's about all I remember.

by Anonymousreply 53August 19, 2018 11:29 AM

First saw Fire Island in the movie Longtime Companion

A sad introduction for a P-towner from California

by Anonymousreply 54August 19, 2018 11:33 AM

It seems soul-sucking to me. But then again, I'm a judgmental prude

by Anonymousreply 55August 19, 2018 11:36 AM

As per R34, anyone with any sense ages out of Fire Island by the time they hit 30.

You get to a point where, as he said, you want weekends to relax, not to get drunk, go to clubs and have anonymous sex. That's a whole lot of fun when you're 22, not as much fun when you're 28.

Remember too that for a lot of gay guys, Fire Island is sort of the college frat party experience they never got to have in college

by Anonymousreply 56August 19, 2018 11:47 AM

R56 you make a good point. Maybe that's why it's so weird to see married guys in their 40s going there every single year

by Anonymousreply 57August 19, 2018 12:00 PM

When I was younger, I was too intimidated to go to Fire Island. All those youthful insecurities—I wasn’t good looking enough, fabulous enough, blah blah blah. Plus, I never had enough money to buy any part of a share when I was in my 20’s (plus the process was so confusing to me).

Some of my friends had shares but not a single one invited me out ever.

I did end up going out once for a day trip but it was after Labor Day and hardly anyone was there.

Thankfully, I discovered the paradise that is P-town. My first visit was with 5 other friends, and it was an absolute blast and a bonding experience. I’ve been going yearly ever since. From all reports it’s a much lower-key place than FI. I guess if I had had the same experience at FI, it would have been my sanctuary each summer, but it’s difficult, if not almost impossible, for a group of guys just to go to FL for a long weekend without a share (I assume).

Now I’m in my 40’s, with a hubby (who also didn’t go to FI much) so I guess that time has passed. I’m still so curious and love the stories but I guess it will never be.

by Anonymousreply 58August 19, 2018 12:36 PM

I sampled all of them in my 20's in the 80's and my Xanadu was Ibiza. Fire Island is pretty. But I liked summer to include fast sexy cars and a big choice of clubs.

by Anonymousreply 59August 19, 2018 12:45 PM

There is the famous Fire Island porn series from Treasure Island Media starring Dawson—one of the most famous pornos ever

by Anonymousreply 60August 19, 2018 1:02 PM

R58 yeah, I think p-town is more my speed. Husband and I are going to try to go next year

by Anonymousreply 61August 19, 2018 1:13 PM

I'm surprised it hasn't been more salacious stories of celebrities on FI... what has DL turned into?

by Anonymousreply 62August 19, 2018 1:14 PM

When I was six or seven my dad had a coffee shop in Ocean Beach and one morning he was fumbling with his keys trying to open the door when I turned and saw a man who looked like Mr. Clean staring at us. He was tall, bald, all in white, with a gold earring (in the 60s!). I said, "Dad, look, it's Mr. Clean!" He said, "Don't look at him!" and pushed me inside. LOL!!

Years later, as a young homo, I went back and had a blast there. I was NOT FI-Ready. I was a skinny twink with acne so I barely got looked at. But I loved the island and still do. I could never afford a house or even a share. I made friends with a couple in their 70s dancing at the Monster one night and they invited me every summer to come stay with them on Doctor's Walk. They had great stories about Cherry Grove in the 50s with photos everywhere of beautiful men relaxing in the sand, having fun at parties, etc.

They loved to gossip about John Eberhardt, the owner of the Belvedere. This was after he was sued in one of those early "Palimony" cases. He had a succession of blonde twinks come and live there, managing the place for him. He was very old and these boys would move their families into the place and put them to "work." The place was fascinating but not kept up, as someone said upthread. I felt sorry for John. He was a sweetheart. I still love to go there because of it still seems so other-wordly to me. I love the names of the houses, like "Shocking Poverty," etc. I would advise anyone to go there. It's still fun!

These stories are divine. P town sounds amazing. I would love to spend a weekend on FI just for the experience. I would go with r34 or another new friend, before it's all washed away.

by Anonymousreply 64August 19, 2018 1:54 PM

The reality is Fire Island is not the gay fantasy you read of on the Internet., it actually, well, The Pines and The Grove, two side/side communities served by different ferries, is just typical eastern seaboard beach communities. If you were dropped there you wouldn't know where you were. Yet the Pines and Grove are highly homosexual in residents and celebrate it. Many Pines houses are architecturally interesting, a few are actually owned by men who do not need to rent out shares. The vast majority of summer residents are anonymous males. In my 3-bedroom house, two in a room, we are all single, not-involved, a major-magazine art director, a city attorney, two account execs with Hearst, an insurance company adjuster and a NYC social worker. The many houses we know are like us, career-minded, gay and not crazy. A few houses have a "name" you may know, Mostly we get out via LIRR. Life seems very balanced, a bunch of friends liking the beach.

by Anonymousreply 65August 19, 2018 4:15 PM

I prefer Ptown to Fire Island. You get hot guys visiting from all over the country, whereas FI is 95% New Yorkers. Ptown is friendlier and less cliquish.

FI has the better beach, but that's about it.

by Anonymousreply 66August 19, 2018 4:37 PM

Not sure why people feel compelled to choose Fire Island over Provincetown, or vice versa. They’re two quite different - if overlapping- experiences. I love both.

Fire Island is great for that feeling of leaving the rest of the world behind. No roads, no cars, few businesses. I’ve never fit in there but I go slightly off season or limit myself to midweek visits in season. The dunes, the sound of the surf, the peaceful beauty of the bay and, yes, the chance of a random hot encounter en route from the Grove to the Pines all make being there magical. I can’t deal too well with the social scene there but still enjoy tea dance, before it gets packed, or late-night drinking and dancing at Sip n Twirl.

I love Provincetown for the history, the colonial-era houses, the galleries, the theater festivals, the writing workshops, the beauty of fall and winter at the tip of the Cape...

by Anonymousreply 67August 19, 2018 4:54 PM

Provincetown is cute in that sort of cloying, Disney-like New England way. But the beach is AWFUL and these days you'll see as many straight families as gay guys. Plus, the bulk of the visitors come from Boston and, well, look like it.

The Pines is really a special place, as cheesy as it sounds. No cars, no (or very few) screaming children and their negligent parents and a gorgeous beach with water you can actually enjoy swimming in most of the summer, unlike the frigid, shark-infested shores of MA. I've had some of the sexiest times of my life at the Meat Rack parties that occasionally follow the underwear party--the most purely hedonistic parties I've seen outside of Berlin and with HOT guys.

If you don't want to party, you can enjoy a weekend at the beach or by the pool with friends in your share house. I actually know several sober guys with half-shares out there. No one is forcing you to party, but God the partying is fun.

by Anonymousreply 68August 19, 2018 5:01 PM

Thanks for the comments guys. I was trying to figure out where to go on vacation next year. Wanted to make it a mostly gay experience. after reading this I'm definitely choosing p-town

by Anonymousreply 69August 19, 2018 5:37 PM

[quote]through out my arms and sang “Don’t Rain on my Parade.”

Oh Dear!

and I'm sure the captain was smiling threwout the performance

by Anonymousreply 70August 19, 2018 5:47 PM

Was once there once;beautiful island, but populated by some of the most shallow people I have ever encountered. I was already marking it down when as the ferry was docking, I observed a muscle bound guy, with two full shopping bags heading walking to his apartment, and using the bags as weights to build muscle. Narcissism, whoredom and infidelity writ large. Worth seeing, if only to have experienced it. The Island will soon disappear in a winter storm.

by Anonymousreply 71August 19, 2018 6:05 PM

What is the favored FI domain of non-fabulous Z-gays, elderqueens, lesbians, etc.?

by Anonymousreply 72August 19, 2018 6:09 PM

R71, what's wrong with good looking people, a beautiful beautiful beach hanging with your friends, daytime pool parties, three teas, dinner with friends, then out to get laid? Why so bitter? it's always a great weekend.

by Anonymousreply 73August 20, 2018 12:23 AM

Late 70s/early 80s. Friend of a friend is walking home in the early AM from the Pines Harbor, drunk and stoned on pot, and falls of the boardwalk. Somehow twists his leg in the process, breaking it so badly he can't stand up. He's in intense pain but hears somebody coming down the walk. He starts shouting for help, that he's broken his leg and can't get up. The person stops, stands and stares at him. Then he takes out of his dick, pisses all over friend's friend, puts it away and keeps walking.

A group of people did come by shortly after that and got help.

by Anonymousreply 74August 20, 2018 12:39 AM

Billy Santoro had some really gross home pornos that were shot on the beach. Including Patrick McDonald before his official porn debut. He was getting fucked on the beach in the middle of the day. Looking like he had no idea where he was at or what he was doing. High as hell. I'm assuming crystal

by Anonymousreply 75August 20, 2018 12:46 AM

R74 that's fucked up

by Anonymousreply 76August 20, 2018 12:47 AM

R74 - That's been posted before on another thread. Are you borrowing it or is that your only story to tell?

by Anonymousreply 77August 20, 2018 12:49 AM

None of you idiots have been out there in years, clearly. You do realize it’s possible to be out in FI and not do drugs? Not drink at all? You’re all stuck in these 80s fantasies. Fire Island is what you make it.

by Anonymousreply 78August 20, 2018 1:09 AM

[quote]Fire Island is great for that feeling of leaving the rest of the world behind.

That's the way I feel about it too, when I get on the ferry and start to head across. It's like a tangible thing.

by Anonymousreply 79August 20, 2018 1:25 AM

R72, get in the line for the Cherry Grove ferry.

by Anonymousreply 80August 20, 2018 1:27 AM

Fire Island is beautiful - and unlike any other East Coast beach. No car access, houses built into nature, one of the most beautiful beaches, and 90% gay. Nothing else compares. Ptown is fine - but it’s a tourist town. Fire Island is an escape. The fact that there aren’t a lot of options either in housing or bars or restaurants can make it restrictive - but also brings everyone together. As a 48 year old, I don’t go to party. I go for the beauty and serenity. Having a drink at a gay bar with great music and dancing is a plus. It’s not the scandalous sex-filled orgy of the 70s - but you can still find that if you want.

by Anonymousreply 81August 20, 2018 1:27 AM

R55, come sit by me and we can be prudes together!

by Anonymousreply 82August 20, 2018 1:31 AM

The Pines is like a minimalist, generic, upscale housing tract mixed in with subtle touches of natural beauty. Its remoteness is emphasized by the accepted ritual of getting out there (the train to the shuttle bus to the ferry), and New Yorkers are ok with there being not much to do there because there is so much to do in the city. They don't need more to do. There isn't even a decent restaurant and thats's ok. And the young crowd patronizes a dance club called Sip-n-Twirl, the most South Park-like name for a gay bar ever.

by Anonymousreply 83August 20, 2018 1:36 AM

R77, I 'm pretty sure I've posted that story and others before. I won't bother to repeat them or any more since you are offended. You sure put me in my place. I shall cry myself asleep.

by Anonymousreply 84August 20, 2018 1:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 86August 20, 2018 1:48 AM

I used to go in the early 80s because my boss and his wife had a house they rarely used and generously offered blocks of days to their young employees. It was fun, but intimidating to me at 20 years old, lol.

A few years later a gorgeous friend of mine spent a week there for the first time in maybe 1986. I asked him what he thought. He said, "It's all old Jews". Aside from the few dazzingly "hot" guys who wouldn't acknowledge me, yeah...

by Anonymousreply 88August 20, 2018 2:12 AM

Old jews? odd observation.

by Anonymousreply 89August 20, 2018 2:14 AM

Provincetown town is a wonderful place because it’s the rare mix of gays and lesbians and straights and singles and families (gay and straight). Everyone gets along so well—it’s the way I expect all america to be about 50-100 years from now. Gays holding hands and straights holding hands, gays and straights with their kids in tow, and it’s the most natural thing in the world.

I’ve been to ptown as a single gay and hooked up with a few porn stars. Then I went a number of times partnered and the experience was completely different. My gays friends with kids say the experience is even more different. Everything exists in the same town, but you pick and choose where you go to socialize based on what you want.

There are lots of gay celebrities walking around, and it’s fun to stop and chat with them as—last time I have fun short talks with Kate Clinton, Tony Kushner, Seth Rudetsky, and Steve Grand (so sad that’s all I kept thinking about when I was talking to him was he liked to get fisted. I didn’t have the guts to proposition him because I could have helped him out...)

I find FI to me more intensely gay (if that makes sense). Everyone is gay,and like ptown, everyone let’s down their guard and is just friendlier than in “real life.” You feel more isolated from the world, in a good way. I have friends who go there to get fucked all weekend and other who go just for the beach. Other go because they love being themselves without the world’s judgment. It’s a very special place, although it tends to skew single, from NYC, and younger.

Delightful anecdote, R88!

by Anonymousreply 91August 20, 2018 2:32 AM

R73 Not bitter at all. I get my kicks elsewhere. The vapid atmosphere was a turn off.

Little Glorie!

by Anonymousreply 93August 20, 2018 10:57 AM

R92 - What's vapid about having fun with friends and meeting new people at an incredible place?

by Anonymousreply 94August 20, 2018 12:08 PM

It's weird how some of you seem convinced that the only options for fun on FI are partying or orgies.

by Anonymousreply 95August 20, 2018 12:09 PM

R95 admittedly most of us with preconceptions have never been. And are only familiar with the stories people come home with. Which tend to be about a lot of anonymous orgies. That's also how it's presented in pop culture. And that's also why we have this post so you guys can clear up preconceptions

by Anonymousreply 96August 20, 2018 12:12 PM

I was talking more about those who've been and seem to think there's nothing to do there if they don't want to party and fuck all weekend.

by Anonymousreply 97August 20, 2018 12:14 PM

OP, you want to get this book. It's expensive, but it captures something special about gay FI in the years before the AIDS crisis.

The key to enjoying Fire Island is to share a house you've rented with good friends. It's simply not intended for daytrippers or people just looking to spend a night or two on a whim, which may explain why those people would find it vapid and isolating and cliquey.

by Anonymousreply 99August 20, 2018 12:18 PM

R92 Clearly our definitions of vapid are quite different.

by Anonymousreply 100August 20, 2018 12:21 PM

It probably doesn't help that gay media Outlets like The Advocate will publish dozens of photos from parties at the pines and have nothing but six pack clones in their pictures. It makes it feel intimidating and cliquey and Stepford Wives-like. They show the Fire Island experience as a large circuit Cruise

by Anonymousreply 101August 20, 2018 12:31 PM

LOLOL at R99.

by Anonymousreply 102August 20, 2018 12:47 PM

R102 - What does that even mean? And it was R98.

I see more couples in the Pines than I've ever seen before. And more women. Things are changing.

by Anonymousreply 103August 20, 2018 12:52 PM

To clarify, OP (and R88) -- there are numerous towns on Fire Island. Most of them are straight. Some, like Ocean Bay Park cater to young hetero singles, it's sort of midway between Jersey Shore and East Hampton in terms of vibe.

There are two gay towns-- Cherry Grove and The Pines.

Where did your boss and his wife have their house R88? If it was in one of the straight family-oriented towns, you're unlikely to have run into many gay men.

by Anonymousreply 104August 20, 2018 1:13 PM

If you don’t know about DL loathing of Tom Bianchi, you really shouldn’t be here.

by Anonymousreply 105August 20, 2018 1:16 PM

Speaking of B-list celebrities Andrew Rannells and Charlie Carver were both on the island this weekend hanging out together with friends. Oh and so was Steve Grand he was walking by the Pines Pool by himself. I wouldn't of minded talking to him, but since I'm a mixed effeminate guy I knew he'd never give me the time of day.

by Anonymousreply 108August 20, 2018 6:15 PM

R108 i'm assuming they are regulars I've seen plenty of pics of Andrew and Steve there

by Anonymousreply 109August 20, 2018 6:19 PM

I've been going for a few years now, I've seen Andrew before, but never Steve. Then again I may just not of noticed, he is good looking, but doesn't necessarily stand out.

by Anonymousreply 110August 20, 2018 6:51 PM

Steve is really darkly tanned this summer. He's also much smaller than you'd realize.

If you don't look close and realize his him, you want not even realize he's the guy you're fisting.

by Anonymousreply 111August 20, 2018 6:57 PM

R111 Checked those guys out......I wouldn't give them a second glance. Look like they pack bags in a Wal Mart.

by Anonymousreply 112August 20, 2018 7:53 PM

I found myself in an orgy with BD Wong at the Belvedere one summer. He has an enormous prince albert piercing.

by Anonymousreply 113August 20, 2018 8:03 PM

R113 top or bottom?

by Anonymousreply 114August 20, 2018 8:16 PM

He's a top, believe it or not. Was super-jacked. No more Song Liling.

by Anonymousreply 115August 20, 2018 8:18 PM

Orgies must be his thing. He has talked or joked about hosting and participating in them multiple times on twitter. Said he was in one at Burning Man

by Anonymousreply 116August 20, 2018 8:28 PM

“Wouldn’t of”, R108? “Not of”, R110?

by Anonymousreply 117August 20, 2018 8:31 PM

R116 isn't he busy raising a kid?

by Anonymousreply 118August 20, 2018 8:37 PM

R118 joint custody? When the kids are away, the daddy will play!

My partner and I had been going to PTown for years, like close to 17 years, starting in our early twenties, just because a friend had a house there. We’d never been to FI for the very reasons r58 mentioned. We took a day trip out there finally, and I was like, this is it? This is what I’d been too shy or nervous about going to. There’s like one half deli/grocery store in the pines and some middling restaurants in the Grove. I understand it’s all about shares and staying over with friends. But the conversations overheard on the ferry were so vapid it almost made me embarrassed to be headed in FI’s direction. I’m sure there are some nice people. But there are a ton of empty, dull people who think having a muscled body is all they need in life. It made me sad for the guys my age, 42, who are still clinging to this idea.

PTown is disappearing too. It’s changed tremendously. The dunes are disappearing and they’re not going to save them. And there aren’t enough gays as there used to be to support the bar restaurant club scene, except for a handful of weekends, as there used to be. You used to have a number of choices now it’s just pretty much the A House and Tea Dance with the same 5 songs everyday. The Restaurants are TONs better now though. Although I’ve stopped going so I don’t know if that’s still the case.

The idea of doing anything that’s all gay, whether it’s a vacation, or bar, or club, just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. It did at one point, and I understood it’s importance in my life. Then I woke up and looked around and realized just being gay doesn’t make you interesting, doesn’t make you fabulous. And I think you have a lot of grown men crowding these place who still hold strong to that idea.

Now it’s all about Italy. I feel late to that bandwagon, but I’m getting into that grove - Capri, Sardegna, Puglia.

by Anonymousreply 120August 20, 2018 8:59 PM

The old Cherry Grove Hotel was hideous. The rooms looked like rundown bathhouse cubicles from the 70s. The a/c unit was from the 60s and didn't do anything but rattle. A tiny b&w TV hung from the ceiling . The single bed had a trundle underneath which slid out --- so cheap and crappy. You didn't want to walk barefoot on the rug. If you were on the eastern side you were facing the Ice Palace Disco that blasted music all night long. There was your dyke lifeguard straight out of Central Casting with a whistle around her neck. My friend jumped into the pool and she had an epileptic fit, blowing her whistle and barking orders. And the rooms were like $300/night. In the 90s! Mercifully it burned down in 2015. Hopefully, they updated it when they rebuilt it.

by Anonymousreply 121August 20, 2018 9:26 PM

Remember when Fire Island actually caught fire, that was funny.

by Anonymousreply 122August 20, 2018 9:34 PM

I stayed at the Belvedere 20 years ago and it was disgusting. I would be afraid of getting MRSA (which happened in a similar dump in Rehoboth). Is it any better now?

I know there are like no options for staying other than Craigslist shares. But is there something decent to stay at?

by Anonymousreply 123August 20, 2018 9:49 PM

Craig, the owner of the Belvedere, died today.

by Anonymousreply 124August 20, 2018 9:54 PM

Seriously?!? That’s a weird coincidence.

by Anonymousreply 125August 20, 2018 10:07 PM

Well despite the practice of sodomy in all shapes and forms, I am always impressed by the color coordinated ensambles worn by those young men.

by Anonymousreply 126August 20, 2018 10:31 PM

R124 -- the DL curse

by Anonymousreply 127August 21, 2018 10:48 AM

Lol at those saying FI is what you make it of it! That’s like saying: I’m going to a bareback gangbang to relax! Gangabangs are what you make of them!

FI is magical yet deceiving.

The first time I went there was amazing. The setting is very relaxing, the houses are beautiful and everyone seems so damn friendly. I was in my early 20’s so I was there to party and get laid. I was there for a weekend the first time and wanted very badly to return. I stayed w a rich friend who rented out rooms cheaply to those he found hot. The House was full of hot sluts and I spent all weekend with one.

The second time I went I had a bf though, so sex was out of the equation. It was again very relaxing and everyone was nice but I felt this feeling of: this is all great but seems phony. This time was for a week. I had a bf but he wasn’t there and while I didn’t have sex with anyone, I flirted like hell and made out with guys. That all got back to him and he dumped me a month later.

Third time was a mess. Went for a day trip (first red sign) and was parting so much, me and my friend missed the ferry back. My friend and I didn’t care, we figured we’d go home with a hookup anyway. That didn’t go as planned either and it ended with a friend rescuing us w a room at 2am in the morning. Everything was a mess but being w my best friend actually made it fun.

The fourth time was when it stopped being fun. Finally made it there w a bf and we weren’t parting, so it felt like looking behind the curtain. Like realizing the person on your Facebook posting amazing updates all the time is actually a phony. It was hard to relax since we shared a house. The housemates weren’t even crazy or sluts or druggies but the space was small.

It really does feel like a crazy and wild college experience being there, and space is limited so most houses seem like dorms (making it hard to relax unless you’re very wealthy and don’t need to share your house). As a result, FI is a fantasy land in a step ford type way for gays who want to party and not feel worried. I can’t imagine people going there to “relax” unless they’re very wealthy.

Cherry Grove which is close to the pines is much more fun and unpretentious. It’s basically where the lesbians and POC go.

FI is where you go in you 20s and after that you graduate to PTown.

by Anonymousreply 128August 21, 2018 1:45 PM

Daniel Nardicio used to throw the best parties in New Orleans at Country Club. We hooked up at the hotel on Frenchman street. He was on his Playgirl Tour for Decadence. His parties on Fire Island are supposed to be fun.. Anybody been to one if his NYC parties?

by Anonymousreply 129August 21, 2018 1:56 PM

Well, they do have culture at Fire Island.

Spent a week there in July for the Pines Party.

Had a lot of fun, came back to the city and found out I'd caught Gonorrhea AND syphillis.

Gross.

by Anonymousreply 134August 21, 2018 2:34 PM

R134 the problem may be your lack of impulse control. Not the location

by Anonymousreply 135August 21, 2018 2:40 PM

[R135] Obviously you've never been, everyone in the Pines lacks impulse control.

by Anonymousreply 136August 21, 2018 2:59 PM

R136 and that's your issue. You knew what it was before you went there and you still went. Take some personal responsibility. You put yourself in a position to pick up STIs

by Anonymousreply 137August 21, 2018 3:37 PM

R102 and R105: FYI, there is exactly ONE thread....from 2008, mind you....that indicates a general hatred for Tom Bianchi. It's linked here. Any other threads that discuss him are 3-4 posts, and not exactly vitriolic. So, in short, your coming for me because I suggested his book to OP was unwarranted. I may not know a whole lot about DL, and I certainly don't know much about Tom Bianchi, but I know a supercilious cunt when I see two.

R134 you're a whore, darling

by Anonymousreply 139August 21, 2018 5:58 PM

With so many gays getting married and having kids, Fire Island just isn't even an option. P-town has replaced it for families.

by Anonymousreply 140August 21, 2018 5:59 PM

DL has posted more than one thread on Tom Bianchi.

But just because we mock his revolving door of "Soul Mates" doesn't mean he can't accurately describe and photograph what Fire Island was like back in the day.

People need to chill.

by Anonymousreply 141August 21, 2018 6:32 PM

R138, you are so angry it's depressing. Please go away.

by Anonymousreply 142August 21, 2018 7:10 PM

@R123 There is a Madison Hotel you can stay at in the Pines section as well as the dreaded Botel which is a hell hole. The hotel on The Cherry Grove side is rebuilt now after it burned down and is nicer now so I heard. I haven't been able to venture over to the Grove side this season.

by Anonymousreply 143August 22, 2018 2:08 AM

Back in the 70s/early 80s, we used to refer to the Hamptons as the graveyard of The Pines.

But that was many years ago, I doubt that anyone would know.

by Anonymousreply 144August 22, 2018 2:32 AM

Once again now boys, in all of Fire Island there are only two gay towns, Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines, two side by side about one mile apart. The Grove has under 300 houses and a summer seasonal population of 2,000 and the Pines has about 500 house and a summer population just over 3,000, Walking the boardwalks in the day, neither is Sodom and Gomorrah. Truly. The bulk of the men there are middle-class mostly New Yorkers of no particular distinction other than holding down jobs paying enough for a summer share. I say this with love. Truly. When you go and see, the feeling becomes "all that about this?" Some of the men are stunning! Some aren't. There is not a feeling of great wealth, just that of a fun place in the sun, with some very nice people like in the video. All sex is where you find it, what you make of it.

by Anonymousreply 145August 25, 2018 12:13 AM

r154 I imagine most people on Datalounge know there are two gay communities on Fire Island

by Anonymousreply 146August 25, 2018 6:28 PM

R145 - You seem very dull

by Anonymousreply 147September 9, 2018 10:24 PM

I have no idea what lies in the future, so I quite look forward to R154, R146.

by Anonymousreply 148September 9, 2018 10:26 PM

There have been MULTIPLE threads over the years making fun of serial harasser and repulsive ancient steroid hag Tom Bianchi, R138 you fucking dumb noob,, and you’re blocked cunt, BECAUSE YOURE A FUCKING IDIOT.
