Linda Hunt
I've always been intrigued by the pint-sized powerhouse. What think you, DL, of this pixie? Love the booming, authoratative voice coming out of that small frame.
Remember her as Billy Kwan in The Year of Living Dangerously? And she's never gotten her teeth fixed. Brava, girl.
Has anyone met her?

She's family. Didn't she win an Oscar for playing a male character?

She was great in Silverado.

I love that she won an Oscar playing an Asian dude. So delightfully weird.

Even her PSAs about brittle bones are majestic.

Does she have a form of dwarfism or is she just small?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 17, 2018 11:58 PM

I think she's just small. She's 4'9"—for reference, an inch taller than JC Mounduix on Big Brother.

R10, yes you are absolutely right -- MAJESTIC is the right description.

She's like Vincent Price. She turns a B movie into an A just by showing up.

I liked her best in “She-Devil” and “Kindergarten Cop”

I love when Dyan Cannon presented Linda with her Supporting Actress Award in 1984? for The Year of Living Dangerously-
Dy-Dy was so excited to announce Linda's name that she yelped out "Linda CUNT!"
The audience went wild.

She was also great in "Waiting for the Moon," a little seen film from 1987 in which she played Alice B. Toklas.

Her casting by Peter Weir in “The Year of Living Dangerously” was inspired - playing Billy Kwan, an Australian born Chinese dwarf male. The book had been a best seller so people were wondering who he would cast.
Plus this movie had Mel Gibson at the peak of his beauty...

Her performance in TYOLD inspired Whoopi Goldberg to campaign for a role in Jack Nicholson’s sequel to CHINATOWN, THE TWO JAKES. The character was male and Whoopi wanted to play the part and used Linda Hunt as an example. Nicholson nixed the idea. She dodged a bullet with that one, as the film tanked.

Imagine if someone tried casting a white woman as an asian man today... Imagine all the think pieces on indiewire!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 18, 2018 3:14 PM

The character was Eurasian, not pure Asian, so it’s appropriate to cast a white actor. Would you think that actors like Kristin Kreuk or Mark-Paul Gosselaar look like they are Asian? Both of them have Asian moms.

R25 that’s not correct - the character in the book on which the film was based was an Australian born Chinese (an “ABC”). I have no issues with casting a non-Chinese female as a Chinese male - Chinese male dwarf Australian actors were in rather short supply when the film was being cast! I thought she was brilliant in the role, under a brilliant director - Peter Weir.

She is awesome. She has carved out a nice career as a character actress for herself by simply embracing her uniqueness and being an incredibly compelling performer. She brings an air of class and importance to everything she does...even on that stupid NCIS:LA show. She makes the drivel they pass off as dialogue seem "weighty" and real.

You've certainly never heard anything salacious about her. She seems like a no nonsense type of actor. She goes in, does her work to the best of her ability, and goes home to her very normal private life. I get the feeling outside work she's just a very normal gal, not interested in being a celebrity at all.

She's been with the same woman for 40 years. That says a lot. She's not the typical flighty Hollywood type.
"Hunt has been with psychotherapist Karen Kline since 1978. The two were married in 2008. They currently reside in a historic neighborhood in Hollywood, California with their pet dogs, in an early 20th century American Craftsman style home."

Here's her Oscar acceptance speech. Grace personified.
She really is the vocal equivalent of James Earl Jones (could make a dish soap commercial sound important and compelling).

Yes, she was amazing in Year of Living Dangerously. Later, she had a recurring role, kind of comedic, as a judge on ABC's The Practice, and maybe also the sort-of spinoff Boston Legal.
I love her work.

Still no word on her health. They had her character call the show but using a voice Scrambler, so she hasn't even made an off-screen appearance. The news reports on the accident said her injuries were minor but now I wonder if she had a health incident That's caused the accident
