Elvis died 41 years ago today

Were you alive then? Do you remember hearing it on the news?

I remember where I was.

I was driving back from a job interview having just graduated from college. I was just off West Capitol Street.

by Anonymousreply 1August 16, 2018 12:51 PM

I was a kid and didn't know who Elvis really was - I was listening to, like, Cher, ONJ, and the Captain & Tennille.

But I thought briefly he was the president because of the fuss TV made when he died.

by Anonymousreply 2August 16, 2018 12:54 PM

I was at work talking with a client on the phone. She shouted 'Oh, my God.' I asked her if she was OK, and she told me that they had just announced the death of Elvis Presley on TV.

by Anonymousreply 3August 16, 2018 12:59 PM

I was 12 and at a Day School art class. The instructor started crying when another instructor came into the room and shouted ‘Elvis is dead’

by Anonymousreply 4August 16, 2018 1:00 PM

I was only 3 years old, but I remember my mother telling me about it.

by Anonymousreply 5August 16, 2018 1:31 PM

I was 6 and on a cross country road trip with my family. My mother’s best friend was with her family in a separate car. They began honking at us and when their car approached ours, my mom’s friend yelled out, crying, “ELVIS IS DEAD!”

My mother responded, “so?”.

They didn’t speak for the rest of the trip.

My mother was (is) a bitch.

I was a kid at the County Fair with my Mom when Elvis's death was announced over the PA system. We all started crying, women more so than men. My Mom likened it to people reacting to the Kennedy assassination: mass spontaneous crying.

by Anonymousreply 7August 16, 2018 1:58 PM

Apparently people want to triangulate some meaning that Elvis and Aretha died on the same calendar date.

by Anonymousreply 8August 17, 2018 8:54 PM

I remember how I heard it. I was listening to the radio and an announcement came on saying Elvis Presley had died. I was shocked. Everybody knew he was terribly overweight, but I don't think many people knew how severely addicted to drugs he was. He was in terrible shape at the end but I remembered him at his best. At his peak he was really, really something.

by Anonymousreply 9August 17, 2018 9:00 PM

Did any of you eldergay types find him sexy?

I don't mean that to be critical. I get that he had a swagger. I just never really saw the "sexy" in him.

by Anonymousreply 10August 17, 2018 9:21 PM

I was 6, at my grandmother's house. The older folks were in the living room with the TV on. I was in my grandmother's bedroom. I remember hearing the breaking news thing come on and they said Elvis Presley was dead and my two aunts started freaking out. The youngest one started crying. I didn't know who he was. But I do remember it being a big deal.

by Anonymousreply 11August 17, 2018 9:59 PM

I was about 15. My mom listened to his music, so I was familiar with it and kinda liked it too. I really don't remember what I doing when I heard of his death.

by Anonymousreply 12August 17, 2018 11:18 PM

" I just never really saw the "sexy" in him."

Then you must be blind. Elvis oozed sex appeal. In fact, because of his hip swiveling stage movements he was considered some kind of sex maniac. He was sexy as hell.

by Anonymousreply 13August 17, 2018 11:40 PM

I was watching Brady Bunch reruns after school when the SPECIAL REPORT broke in.

Didn't make much of an impact in my home because my mom and grandma weren't really fans, but henny, when they announced Natalie Wood's death, my mom boo-hooed like a family member had died (Natalie and Bette Davis were her favorite actresses).

by Anonymousreply 14August 17, 2018 11:52 PM

In Paris on Holiday. On the front page of a newspaper that was next to the toilet. Read the article then wiped my ass. True story.

by Anonymousreply 15August 18, 2018 12:00 AM

He was sexy as fuck. My friend @cozyvibes on the twatter just twatted this snap of him.

I do remember! I was more upset by the death of Groucho Marx though on August 19, 1977.

by Anonymousreply 17August 18, 2018 12:07 AM

I was 15 and saw the news update during whatever show was on NBC that night. I seem to remember John Chancellor but it could have been someone else. Really shocking. My parents weren't fans but he was so huge. The local 4 o'clock movie always had Elvis week, along with John Wayne week and Planet of the Apes Week, lol.

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2018 12:10 AM

This thread has me ‘all shook up.’ Damn you, OP.

by Anonymousreply 19August 18, 2018 12:28 AM

I heard Elvis in concert in June of 1976. I worked at the concert venue. A year later I went to work at the same venue, and that is where I heard Elvis had died. 11 years later my mom died on the same date, and now Aretha. I was not a big Elvis fan, but it was one of the best concerts I ever witnessed, Paul McCartney’s Wings Over America concert being #1. I was a big Aretha fan, but never got to hear her live. I light a candle for them.

by Anonymousreply 20August 18, 2018 12:39 AM

No, didn't he die on the shitter like Judy?

by Anonymousreply 21August 18, 2018 12:43 AM

I do remember, but it didn't make a strong impression on me. My parents had some of his singles, but I can't remember them ever listening to them. I don't recall anyone in my family having much of a reaction, but I remember some of our neighbors definitely did, with crying, emotional scenes.

by Anonymousreply 22August 18, 2018 1:17 AM

I remember it well. It was as upsetting to many older people as Princess Diana's death was.

by Anonymousreply 23August 18, 2018 1:44 AM

I was working at an A&W restaurant when the Manager told us that he had died. Couldn't make a decent root beer float the rest of the day.

by Anonymousreply 24August 18, 2018 1:53 AM

He died on my birthday. I was a teenager so his death had little impact on me but it was a big deal for the rest of the world. I thought he was old and fat. Now I can’t believe how young he was.

Like R25, I was a teenager and thought he was over the hill (and now I think he was incredibly young). I remember seeing his tv concert in 1968 (?) when he still looked good and then his comeback concert on tv when he was overweight. I only saw them because we had one tv and my sisters wanted to watch.

I remember scoffing at the coverage, which seemed to go on for a few days, of women at Graceland, crying their eyes out.
