Would you rather live in Beirut, Bangkok or Belfast on $350K?

My company has offices in all 3 cities, and I can move to any one of them. I’m sick of Bogota and ready for a change. Yes, I know, they’re all relatively cheap and on my salary, I will be living it up, but which would you choose and why?

I’m originally from Boston, so I know about big city living. I’ve only visited our corporate cities briefly.

I’m 39, single and have no kids. Thanks in advance!

Go for Belfast! At least you’ll have all the other European countries to visit easier. If not, go for Bangkok.

by Anonymousreply 1August 14, 2018 5:52 PM

Bangkok for sure. 350k means you will be saving 275k easily. It's cheap to live. Great food, cosmopolitan culture, fully open and often wild gay scene. Great tropical beaches just a few hours away. Downside HEAT and TRAFFIC. If your company is close to the skytrain or subway rent a place with connections.

by Anonymousreply 2August 14, 2018 5:56 PM

Belfast is really boring. But you do have access to Europe and it’s relatively easy first world living with all the amenities you want. Beirut is more interesting - but you have to deal with the negativity/fear. Bangkok is very interesting but can be a hassle. Depends if you want an easy life or an educational experience - Belfast vs Bangkok

by Anonymousreply 3August 14, 2018 5:58 PM

Belfast. You’re in the UK but also Ireland. You’ve got the whole British Isles nearby, and Western Europe too.

Bangkok could be fun but I’d prefer Belfast, as there is less culture shock for me as an American. Beirut, no way.

Another vote for Bangkok. You would live like a king on a quarter of that kind of money. Wonderful people and amazing food. Plus easy flights to some amazing places like Hong Kong, Sydney, Shanghai, and Bali.

Bangkok>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Beirut>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Belfast N.Ireland is a true shithole, and the people equivocating have clearly never gotten out of their double-wides....

by Anonymousreply 6August 14, 2018 6:07 PM

What the hell do you do to earn $350k a year at just 39 ???!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 7August 14, 2018 6:11 PM

Middle Eastern men turn me on so much so this would be a no brainer for me.

by Anonymousreply 8August 14, 2018 6:11 PM

Banking

by Anonymousreply 9August 14, 2018 6:13 PM

Belfast - unless you speak the language in Bangkok. Beirut is a no.

by Anonymousreply 10August 14, 2018 6:15 PM

They're all terrible, but Belfast is probably the least terrible.

by Anonymousreply 11August 14, 2018 6:16 PM

Boston .. Bogota .. Beirut .. Bankok .. Belfast

Maybe it's time you advance to the "C's" and try something there.

Who cares either way r13? There's no way to validate claims on an anonymous message board about an anonymous person's specific situation.

I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine.

Up next: "Hartford, Hereford, and Hampshire? Where should I live to avoid hurricanes?"

by Anonymousreply 16August 14, 2018 6:25 PM

Why didn't you like Bogota, OP? They have cheap man whores there apparently.

by Anonymousreply 17August 14, 2018 6:26 PM

Also lots of cocaine!

by Anonymousreply 18August 14, 2018 6:28 PM

R13 That was what I was pointing out.

by Anonymousreply 19August 14, 2018 6:28 PM

They hardly ever happen, R16.

Beirut, with a beefy bodyguard and a beautiful boy toy.

by Anonymousreply 21August 14, 2018 6:29 PM

"Lesbos, Latvia, or Lithuania, where can I live to avoid rampant STDs?"

by Anonymousreply 22August 14, 2018 6:29 PM

Labored and unfunny parody.

r23's breast implants started leaking moments after typing her witty response.

Agree - who cares if it’s a troll. It’s an interesting question. Having stayed in Belfast for weeks at a time, I can say it’s boring as hell. It has access to some great physical beauty and has all the luxuries you want from the first world. You can have a nice house and drive to the “city” center as well as beautiful coastline. Or fly to London every weekend quickly and cheaply if you want. Or Amsterdam. Or Paris.

You obviously have never been to a circuit party. They’re banal but full of guys earning that money and much more in their 30s and late 20s. Mostly they’re in banking or corporate accountancy, and are fulfilling posts in Europe or China or NY. A few in the upper strata of software engineering. The salaries are beyond belief. I knew a big dicked 20 something in London in finance (trading), very worldly, clever, supremely confident. (which was the one offputting aspect) who with his bonuses was pulling in a million a year. He said it was totally punishing and most guys were retired by mid-late 30s cause of the stress. His holiday house was in South Africa!

by Anonymousreply 26August 14, 2018 7:11 PM

Yeah - the challenge with that life is you burn out by 45. And while it’s great income, it’s hardly fuck-you money. . At a 50% tax rate, it’s $175,000/ year take home. If you are disciplined, you save $75,000 year. Over 20 years, that’s $1.5 million saved - which is what you need as a minimum for a basic retirement in the US. So at 45, you have saved for retirement - but you still have to work another 20 years to support yourself. And that means keep working a high stress job or step down your lifestyle to a basic middle class existence - which is hard after living the high life for 20 years. I don’t know how the average person saves that kind of money for retirement.

by Anonymousreply 27August 14, 2018 7:21 PM

Belfast. I could pop over to London any time I wanted.

by Anonymousreply 28August 14, 2018 7:22 PM

You should try Beaulieu. Wait, no - Beauvais. Or, if you want to see the tapestry, Bayeux.

by Anonymousreply 29August 14, 2018 7:35 PM

No darling, you got it wrong. That’s why you don’t have one of those jobs. They never save a penny: they invest — with no fees or commissions, and access to special deals and insider tips, plus gheir bonuses, they accumulate their retirement pots very quickly. And they’re many multiples of $1.5m. That’s merely the amount they sign over to their kept boys to shove them off when they hit 30 and get too whiny.

I'd rather bust Barron Grinnit before he burgles Big Ben through Barcelona, Baghdad and Belize!
