Aretha Franklin is in Hospice Care

Aretha Franklin is in hospice care at her home, a source close to the 76-year-old singer told CNN's Don Lemon.

Word of the "Queen of Soul" being gravely ill was first reported by Showbiz 411. Showbiz 411's Roger Friedman told CNN: "She has a great family, she's surrounded by love, and the world is sending prayers. All further announcements will be made by her family. We just want to send love and prayers." The soul singer has been dogged by reports of failing health for years and appeared frail in recent photos, but she has kept her struggles private

Last time was bariatric surgery is this time a face lift or a real illness?

by Anonymousreply 1August 14, 2018 8:08 AM

TMZ updated their article saying doctors have confirmed Aretha is expected to pass any moment.

by Anonymousreply 2August 14, 2018 8:11 AM

So I guess it turns out that the blind item about the "HIV-positive black legend" actually was/is Aretha? Remember that DL was right about Charlie Sheen.

Regardless, sad news.

by Anonymousreply 3August 14, 2018 8:14 AM

I don't want her to dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Can somebody stop the time?

by Anonymousreply 4August 14, 2018 8:16 AM

It is profoundly sad news.

by Anonymousreply 5August 14, 2018 8:17 AM

Yes R3 a 76 yr old life time smoker. What else could it be but HIV.

by Anonymousreply 6August 14, 2018 8:20 AM

It s end like she’s been “dying” for years now but this time it looks like it’s for real.

by Anonymousreply 7August 14, 2018 8:31 AM

Very sad. God bless.

by Anonymousreply 8August 14, 2018 8:32 AM

America's only Queen. No snide remarks please. A Legend and talent unique one of a kind woman who brought joy to countless millions with her talent.

by Anonymousreply 9August 14, 2018 8:42 AM

I'll just add "never seeing Aretha in concert" to my long list of regrets.

by Anonymousreply 10August 14, 2018 9:56 AM

I saw her and she was wonderful.

The audience loved it, but halfway through she brought on her no talent son and we all took a LONG intermission while that mess was on stage. A good 60% of the audience left, when she returned, we returned.

She sand My Funny Valentine and stopped the show. You have never heard it like that.

by Anonymousreply 11August 14, 2018 11:15 AM

R3 Give her some R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

by Anonymousreply 12August 14, 2018 12:14 PM

Same, R10. I’m so sad.

by Anonymousreply 13August 14, 2018 12:47 PM

I always felt bad I didn’t like her as much as I imagined I was supposed to.

by Anonymousreply 14August 14, 2018 12:50 PM

She recently did a song at some celebrity tribute and she still hit her high notes.

by Anonymousreply 15August 14, 2018 1:01 PM

Aretha's 1972 Amazing Grace album is my absolute favorite. She's truly a legend. Heartfelt sadness at this news.

by Anonymousreply 16August 14, 2018 1:18 PM

She will always be the Queen.

by Anonymousreply 17August 14, 2018 1:20 PM
by Anonymousreply 18August 14, 2018 7:03 PM

You guys are absolutely insane if you think Aretha had aids. That is a rumor started by some jackals Nazi. Use your brain. She more than likely has diabetes and heart disease, both killers.

by Anonymousreply 19August 14, 2018 7:07 PM

R19, she has cancer.

by Anonymousreply 20August 14, 2018 7:15 PM

I hope they cover her upper arms if it is an open casket.

by Anonymousreply 21August 14, 2018 7:18 PM

Where did this rumor about Glyn Turman infecting Franklin with HIV start? The rumor he slept with her son? What proof has there been?

Turman is 71 and still in show biz. He even has a long time third wife.

You'd think Franklin and her family would have devoted themselves to prosecuting him until some kind of justice was served.

by Anonymousreply 22August 14, 2018 7:20 PM

A great talent and true diva.

by Anonymousreply 23August 14, 2018 7:23 PM

The rumor was started by the info posted from that Aetna leak, so someone posted the names of several celebrities who, supposedly, were sent info about their HIV treatments. Then some BI expanded it by saying that the person (who was guessed to be Aretha) contracted it in the 80s, was on medication for a long time, and that, not that long ago, the treatment stopped working.

by Anonymousreply 24August 14, 2018 7:27 PM

All bullshit. I can not believe you morons are falling for this. I guess it doesn't matter except I get tired of people being so stupid.

by Anonymousreply 25August 14, 2018 7:43 PM

I'm wondering if it could be the Zika virus.

by Anonymousreply 26August 14, 2018 7:47 PM

Thank you for the detailed response.

by Anonymousreply 27August 14, 2018 8:02 PM

Horrible rumors. And the insurance companies should be sued for such leaks.

by Anonymousreply 28August 14, 2018 8:58 PM

If Aretha passes away now, Trump is going to mention her on his Twitter feed, isn’t he?

Poor, poor Aretha.

by Anonymousreply 29August 14, 2018 9:17 PM

@21 stfu its a shame i never got the chance to see her in concert...or any of the other greats like mj or whitney. God bless her

by Anonymousreply 30August 14, 2018 9:30 PM

Saw Aretha in 2009 at The Hollywood Bowl. It was the day after Michael Jackson died. She spoke about him and had a moment of silence. Very intense. You could hear a pin drop. The only reigning queen...

by Anonymousreply 31August 14, 2018 9:35 PM

H-O-S-P-I-C-E.

by Anonymousreply 32August 14, 2018 10:17 PM

She's fine. She sends her love!

by Anonymousreply 33August 14, 2018 10:21 PM

I think that - again- she's fooled us all and will emerge less 50 pounds of skin and a new attitude.

by Anonymousreply 34August 14, 2018 10:52 PM

"April Fools" by Aretha is on the April 2005 Gap In-Store Playlist.

by Anonymousreply 35August 14, 2018 11:04 PM

What the hell is wrong with the Gap playlist freak?

by Anonymousreply 36August 14, 2018 11:07 PM

You’re bad, r32.

by Anonymousreply 37August 14, 2018 11:30 PM

Aretha Franklin is in hospice care at home - HOSPICE. That means they expect her to die (not "pass away") within the next 90 days. We don't know how long she's been in hospice, 1 day or 80.

I'll be willing to wager that she has repository - heart issues that are going to kill her.

by Anonymousreply 38August 14, 2018 11:45 PM

R28 the insurance company was sued. Federal fines, whole nine yards.

by Anonymousreply 39August 15, 2018 12:32 AM

My mom had Alzheimers and was in hospice care in her care facility. She lasted a year and a half. So there's that.

by Anonymousreply 40August 15, 2018 12:54 AM

My partner's mother is in a memory unit hospice, for 3.5 years now. Inoperable benign brain tumor which will eventually be what kills her. So, yes, people can last in that state but it's very different from, say, terminal cancer. My friend's husband had cancer and, after being transferred to a hospice, lasted less than a month.

by Anonymousreply 41August 15, 2018 1:24 AM

When it's time Lady Soul, head for the Light...……...

by Anonymousreply 42August 15, 2018 1:40 AM

The first record, hit single, I bought by Aretha Franklin was "Think" and on the flip side was her great rendition of Sam Cooke's "You Send Me". And that was back in 1968, 50 years ago, when she was only 26.

by Anonymousreply 43August 15, 2018 1:45 AM

"My mom had Alzheimers and was in hospice care in her care facility. She lasted a year and a half. So there's that."

That's Azlheimers. You can live a generation with Alzheimers. Aretha DOES NOT have Alzgheimers.

by Anonymousreply 44August 15, 2018 1:57 AM

I saw her once - at New Bethel when she recorded One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. My ex grew up there and got tickets through his family. Her voice was starting to fray from the smoking but it was thrilling to hear her where it all started. I'll never forget the choir filing into the darkened church with candles singing Walk in the Light. Thank you, Aretha, and God bless you.

by Anonymousreply 45August 15, 2018 1:58 AM

This is killing my soul.

I pretty much quit liking Aretha after reading so many reports about how rude and nasty she was to people. I remember how terrible she was to Patti LaBelle, who was attempting to praise her after a performance. That was it for me, because Patti is a sincerely nice and gracious person.

by Anonymousreply 47August 15, 2018 2:21 AM

Soo... forget the AIDS gossip, any truth to the rumors that her first two children (born when she was 12 and 14) were sired by her own father?

by Anonymousreply 48August 15, 2018 3:05 AM

There's a good book about her father called Singer in a Strange Land that denies those rumors, but does confirm that CL knocked up a 13 or 14 year old girl from his church. I think it also said he had a tumultuous relationship with some singer, maybe Dinah Washington. He led a pretty dissolute life, and Aretha took after him as he had a lot of musicians over partying all the time. There are also rumors that Sam Cooke fathered her first or second son.

by Anonymousreply 49August 15, 2018 3:17 AM

Wikipedia says she has 4 different baby daddies and she had her first at 12.

by Anonymousreply 50August 15, 2018 3:22 AM

R50 ...what's so hard to believe about it? Seems like most of these legendary black singers (Etta James, Billie Holliday, the Jacksons, et al) had troubled childhoods/home lives.

by Anonymousreply 51August 15, 2018 3:28 AM

Maybe she just liked getting porked?

by Anonymousreply 52August 15, 2018 3:34 AM

[R50] ...what's so hard to believe about it? Seems like most of these legendary black singers (Etta James, Billie Holliday, the Jacksons, et al) had troubled childhoods/home lives.

So because the Osmonds, Joan Crawford, Drew Barrymore, McCulley Culkin and his siblings, Mackenzie Phillips, River And Joaquin Phoenix had troubled childhoods; does that mean that most white celebs had trouble childhoods and any incest/rape rumors must be true?

by Anonymousreply 53August 15, 2018 6:57 AM

How about this song? One of her best!

Her background singers, Sweet Inspiration, are awesome!

First time seeing her was at The Greek Theatre in LA back in 2004. She didnt sing “Respect” and people were so shocked that I think she opened with it the next night.

by Anonymousreply 56August 15, 2018 6:17 PM

That she had her first child at the age of twelve is quite disturbing.

I mean, that is pre-teen pregnancy!!

I guess she was physically mature at a very young age, but nontheless......

by Anonymousreply 57August 15, 2018 6:20 PM

R14, if you don't like Aretha as much as you think you should, maybe you are focusing on her 1980s and later stuff?

Check out her her 60's and 70s recordings on Youtube, and you will not be disappointed.

by Anonymousreply 58August 15, 2018 6:22 PM

Hope she’s not suffering too much.

by Anonymousreply 59August 15, 2018 6:22 PM

R59, Amen.

by Anonymousreply 60August 15, 2018 6:22 PM

I was able to see Aretha perform in Chicago in March 2017. She looked thin but, as always, sounded amazing and delivered a terrific performance. She sat for some numbers and left the stage for a brief time halfway through, but otherwise gave it her all.

Afterwards, we happened to go by the stage door as she exited and got into her custom bus / motor coach. Lots of fans were outside and she was very gracious but didn't stop to talk to anyone.

There aren't too many performers I've always wanted to see perform live, but she was one of them. So glad I got the chance.

by Anonymousreply 61August 15, 2018 6:55 PM

R45 Thank you for sharing that beautiful memory. Wow.

by Anonymousreply 62August 15, 2018 8:21 PM

"Who's foolin' who? Take another look and tell me, baby!"

by Anonymousreply 63August 15, 2018 8:26 PM

[quote]That's Azlheimers. You can live a generation with Alzheimers. Aretha DOES NOT have Alzgheimers.

Oh Dear.

by Anonymousreply 64August 15, 2018 8:31 PM

She must have been quite promiscuous to have two children by the age of 14.

by Anonymousreply 65August 15, 2018 8:31 PM

Some people's condition actually improves when they are in Hospice care. Because they are no longer being subjected to unnecessary medical treatments and procedures, and they are not being put on new meds with resultant side effects.

And they are allowed to eat whatever they want. And their stress and anxiety levels may be a a lot lower because they are not worried about the future any more at this point.

This has been known to happen... depending on what the underlying condition was.

by Anonymousreply 66August 15, 2018 8:35 PM

R57, it was quite common among the mountain folk of my ancestors just 100 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 67August 15, 2018 8:36 PM

R66, she has pancreatic cancer and reportedly weighs 85 lbs. You don’t magically recover from that. Her family was told weeks ago that this is the end.

by Anonymousreply 68August 15, 2018 8:38 PM

R68, I said that it depends on the underlying condition, asshole. Obviously, she’s not gonna survive end-stage cancer.

But no one knows what she has, because it’s never been revealed. She was rumored to have pancreatic cancer years ago and she’s still here.

And it doesn’t help the speculation when her family posts shit like this:

[quote]We believe she'll pull through it, she believes she'll pull through it, and that's the important thing," he added.
