Straight British comedian will play 'very camp' gay character

This is MURDER!!!

/s

by Anonymousreply 1August 12, 2018 10:51 PM

Gay Edgar Ramirez will be playing an openly straight character in the same movie! Go figure!

by Anonymousreply 2August 12, 2018 10:52 PM

I don't have a problem with a straight guy playing a gay guy.

I have a problem with a character who "will be ‘hugely effete, very camp and very funny."

When being gay is the punchline, they are laughing at you, not with you. It's like a minstrel show.

by Anonymousreply 3August 12, 2018 11:51 PM

He looks deranged.

"We will never stop casting straight actors in gay roles!" vows Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 7August 13, 2018 12:25 AM

I don't have a problem with it although I'm sure there will be some trolls who say this is our version of blackface. If gay can play straight in Hollywood, straight should be able to play gay.

by Anonymousreply 8August 13, 2018 12:27 AM

This Jack Whitehall looks very gay in that first picture. He has very starey eyes and gay lips!

by Anonymousreply 9August 13, 2018 12:28 AM

Jack is totally charming and adorable.

Jack Whitehall is straight. Shocking.

by Anonymousreply 11August 13, 2018 2:18 AM

No actor is straight. He might be bi but straight I doubt it.

by Anonymousreply 12August 13, 2018 2:20 AM

Imagine if they cast a white actor as a black man playing an Amos'n'Andy type character.

Same thing

by Anonymousreply 13August 13, 2018 2:20 AM

for sometime I assumed he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 14August 13, 2018 2:21 AM

Why does it have to be a "very camp" gay character? Most of us don't walk around being very camp but act just like other normal human being.

I hope this character is not stereotypical and cringeworthy.

by Anonymousreply 15August 13, 2018 2:26 AM

How else will you know he's gay R15? /s

by Anonymousreply 16August 13, 2018 2:27 AM

He played a very camp and biting Marc Bolan in Sky's "Urban Myths" episode "David Bowie and Marc Bolan".  Terrible episode but at least it was entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 17August 13, 2018 2:34 AM

I hate his comedy, but that makes me really really want to hate fuck him, hard, til he cries. Lots.

by Anonymousreply 18August 13, 2018 2:37 AM

Jack is adorable, very funny and very camp in real life.

And he has a big dick.

by Anonymousreply 19August 13, 2018 2:38 AM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 20August 13, 2018 2:38 AM

I hate his comedy. Hate it. But he is cute. Always had that British "is he gay" thing going on that we don't really get in the US. He's very U, very Sloan Ranger.

by Anonymousreply 21August 13, 2018 2:48 AM

R21 Hate his fucking father too, and that shit show they did together and then the travelling one...together

by Anonymousreply 22August 13, 2018 2:57 AM

Witty, but far too posh; it gets tiresome after a while. Dont really care about a straight person playing a gay character. My only issue is that after the furore of scarjo and trans roles it seems like this outrage is only selective to certain members of the 'queer' community. If straights can take gay roles (its not like there arent any gay actors ffs), then cis can take trans ones too, no?

by Anonymousreply 23August 13, 2018 3:14 AM

How do we know he's hung?!?

by Anonymousreply 24August 13, 2018 3:20 AM

He did a show with Freddie Flintoff, where he did a mud bath and apparently, it looked big mud covered

by Anonymousreply 25August 13, 2018 3:22 AM

He is objectively quite attractive. I always run across Jack as I keep track of my lovely Douglas Booth. They are very good friends, or at least attend sporting events together.

We’ve covered Ramirez in the “Who will come out...” threads, and the “Actors who out themawlves with social media” threads as well. In excruciating detail, with numerous receipts. Overall, we’ve been discussing him for years. But I guess some people really do come to DL just to reminisce about Judy and Barbara 🙄

Happy for Jack, at any rate.

I'm with R31

Actors pretend to be someone they're not.

The convincing ones are called good actors.

by Anonymousreply 39August 13, 2018 4:14 AM

Because R15 they can't explicitly say he's gay or show him expressing himself with a man since China and Russian market are so important. So they'll make him stereotypically gay and flamboyant so the message discreetly gets across. After all it's minstrel and not actually gay propaganda

by Anonymousreply 60August 13, 2018 9:06 AM

Fuck. I don't want to see a straight man make fun of us in a Disney film. Sounds horrible.

by Anonymousreply 61August 13, 2018 9:11 AM

Makes sense. Disney--campy gay role--straight actor.

by Anonymousreply 62August 13, 2018 9:20 AM

Rest assured-------> 'Beard Club' insists he's (predictably) gay, closeted, and (of course) bearding. Or rather, his 6-year bearding contract (with an Asian wife!) expired last year. And he "eye-fucked Luke Evans," according to one of the comments.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 64August 13, 2018 9:55 AM

I find him irritating in that fey inately superior manner of some English posh, that gets on people’s nerves. However, until he got that silly tan, he had the most enviable poreless ‘pressed talc’ skin. It seems his ex-girl friends are definitely not his fans.

by Anonymousreply 65August 13, 2018 10:05 AM

So Jack will play himself in a movie, good to know.

by Anonymousreply 66August 13, 2018 10:17 AM

If Disney had asked Luke Evans to play the role one would feel comforted. However, given Whitehall’s schtich is bumbly jazz hands fey, it doesn’t bode well. Disney clearly wants a gay character that telegraphs gay: ie the camp ratched up several notches so the straight audience can reassure themselves that he’s big G gay, and not — horror of horrors — could possibly be one of them

by Anonymousreply 67August 13, 2018 10:18 AM

[quote]Or rather, his 6-year bearding contract (with an Asian wife!) expired last year.

A six-year bearding contract? GTFOH

by Anonymousreply 68August 13, 2018 10:20 AM

I've said this on other threads - people want to get offended to be offended. I am so sick of the SJW types finding everything offensive. They call it acting for a fucking reason.

This is Jack Whitehall we’re talking about. He IS hugely effete and very camp – even in his ordinary life. He’s one of those urban metrosexuals. And he’s a rah-rah, posh Brit on top of that (at that junction where aristocratic manner careens into feyness).

If he plays effete - he’ll just be playing himslef, it won’t even be acting!

The Good: I have no desire to see this film.

The Bad: Another straight actor playing a gay character in a high profile film.

The Ugly: Would you self-loathing queens stop reciting the definition of actor throughout the thread? We know the definition, we have the internet too. Complacency is the biggest barrier to change . THERE ARE OPENLY GAY ACTORS IN HOLLYWOOD!!! If they keep getting passed over for gay roles, then what's left for them?

by Anonymousreply 73August 13, 2018 10:54 AM

LOVED Jack in Fresh Meat and in Bad Education. Both fucking hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 74August 13, 2018 10:56 AM

Only reason most gay men don't have a problem with straight actors playing gay characters is because they think that somehow makes that actor attainable.

by Anonymousreply 75August 13, 2018 10:58 AM

I really did think he was gay. Surprised he is not.

by Anonymousreply 76August 13, 2018 11:00 AM

But where would that leave poor Jack, R73? :'(

Being a metrosexual Millennial, he can't believably play a normal straight guy either!

Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place...

by Anonymousreply 77August 13, 2018 11:00 AM

Is this one of those things where 1 or 2 morons on twitter got outraged and now its a thing?

by Anonymousreply 78August 13, 2018 11:01 AM

R13 is correct. That said, we should not boil down representation to identity. But why is it that any other group would be outraged and we just sort understand? I just saw a list of the most important gay books. All of the ones about lesbians by women and at least one of the books about gay men written by a woman. I read the book and liked it. Glad it was written but if any other group was treated like this. I guess the point is to say, "We are evolved on this so please look at how we lead by example."

by Anonymousreply 79August 13, 2018 11:04 AM

It wouldn’t matter in the slightest if there were s million gay roles out there. But they are so rare in mainstream cinema that every single one is like a tentpole. When was the last damn time an out gay gay man played a gay role in a mainstream movie. That it takes you some moments to recall bepseaks the problem. I can only recall Rupert Everett in My Best Friends Wedding — which was an eon ago.

Disney needs a kick up its smug tinselled arse.

by Anonymousreply 80August 13, 2018 11:20 AM

As much as I adore Jack, I agree with you R80.

by Anonymousreply 81August 13, 2018 11:51 AM

[quote]THERE ARE OPENLY GAY ACTORS IN HOLLYWOOD!!! If they keep getting passed over for gay roles, then what's left for them?

Straight roles maybe? Do you really want gay actors to be confined to playing only gay roles? Because I think it's hard to make a living that way. If what we want is for gay and lesbian actors to be able to play all roles, both straight and gay, then gay and lesbian roles will also be open to straight men and women.

Don't be like those hysterical, loathsome trans. The only thing they achieved by shutting down Scarlett Johansson in that tranny role is to ensure the movie will never be made.

by Anonymousreply 82August 13, 2018 12:20 PM

Put me in the camp of 'I thought he was gay'.

Honestly, annoying and frustrating as it is to see yet another straight gay in a gay roles, I'm much more angered by the fact they made the character a complete stereotype. What the fuck?

by Anonymousreply 83August 13, 2018 1:09 PM

Ugh, *straight guy* not straight gay.

by Anonymousreply 84August 13, 2018 1:10 PM

Oh, honey, come down off your cross. Every fucking tv show has a gay character in it now and every film is putting gay characters in them. Enough. Who fucking cares. Gay actors don’t want to play gay characters.

by Anonymousreply 90August 13, 2018 6:06 PM

A lot of closeted actors play gay roles.

by Anonymousreply 91August 13, 2018 6:20 PM

Preference should be given to actual gay guys for these roles but if a straight guy is the better actor I don't mind.

You should worry about the actor rather about how the character will be portrayed. And sadly it's another loud, obnoxious, femme camp character that will be related to the main female character or some carmakers character as a sidekick

by Anonymousreply 92August 13, 2018 7:20 PM

So, to follow the logic of some posters, gay actors cannot be allowed to play straight characters?

by Anonymousreply 93August 13, 2018 7:22 PM

Only if they can play straight believably

by Anonymousreply 94August 13, 2018 7:24 PM

I think a guy like Andrew Rannells could've also played a role like this. What's he got going on?

by Anonymousreply 103August 13, 2018 11:45 PM

It’s def fun to guess about celebs’ sexuality....

I guess I understand the attraction of all the people who post about actors “bearding” or w/e. I kind of see those celebs as a lost cause. If it’s really true that this guy is openly dating women, but he’s gay...it’s very unlikely he’s going to ever come out.

And the coming out is what I like, the catharsis of my suspicions and my research being confirmed. So to that end, the only celebs that interest me are (attractive) ones who keep their love lives “private” or who have decent receipts via social media.

Gossiping about Cruise, Trovolta, or even Jack Whitehall’s sexuality just seems pointless. There will be no catharsis. They won’t come out (if they’re gay. The guy has fucked/is fucking vag. He’s basically dead to me.

Well, I probably will get attacked for this, but I feel the same way about this as I feel about gay-for-pay porn actors. If they're convincing in the scenes they film, I just don't care. I've never seen this guy before. I just see that he has beautiful, blue eyes and full lips, and I'd be happy to see him play some gay scenes if he plays them well. I hope he doesn't fall into silly stereotypes, that's all.

by Anonymousreply 126August 14, 2018 4:23 AM

By all accounts this is exactly what's in store. I'm less concerned with the fact that this allegedly straight actor's playing the role, but that the role is being described as campy. That's the truly insulting part. I can already see him jumping into The Rock's arms like an idiot at the sight of a crocodile. We're getting another Wiggins. I guarantee it.

What's up with these incessant fake gay millenials/supporters? Their lives are so fucking perfect they need to rile up at anything! This guy suits the ROLE in this movie. No one complained about Chalamet or Hammer for playing gays on CMBYN

by Anonymousreply 138August 14, 2018 10:18 AM

Aww!! Jack is awesome! He's hilarious as the teacher on that show of his. Good for him on being in a major Hollywood picture.

by Anonymousreply 139August 14, 2018 10:23 AM

I completely agree, R128.

The whole issue that gay actors should only be cast in gay roles is ridiculous. One's gayness (or otherwise) isn't an irrefutable physical and visible attribute - it's not like a performer's race or a disability. To conflate it within an overarching and overdue discussion about visibility and representation in mainstream culture is disingenuous. Jack Whitehall's own sexuality is as alien to me as his socioeconomic background. Should he also never be cast as a poor person? Would that also be offensive? (FWIW, I can't stand the fucker - but that's neither here nor there.)

And I loathe the fucking performative wokeness of all of this. These Twitterstroms are always whipped up by actors who cloak themselves in claims of progressiveness, but actually the root of their outrage can almost always be summarised as being 'Why wasn't I cast?'

by Anonymousreply 140August 14, 2018 10:24 AM

This whole thing is absurd. Let people have their own sexuality and let actors be actors.

No one is saying that gays should only play gay roles and you old queens know it. And, there was plenty of controversy surrounding Chalamet and Hammers casting initially. But, the movie ended up being good and the queens started drooling over the two actors (and of course gay rumors followed). I'd love to hear this list of openly gay actors who are continuously playing straight characters. I'm willing to bet that the list of straight actors playing gay characters is 10x longer. Of course you old self-hating queens on the DL don't care either way, you don't plan to see this movie anyway and as long as a man is attractive you'll imagine in your head that he is gay, closeted, bicurious, pansexual, or whatever.

If gay actors want affirmative action for gays they should get Congress to pass a law. Since they can't get that, no one would take them seriously , some of them resort to Twitter bullying. Using the mob.

"Basically some gay actors are calling for affirmative action for gays. Gays continue to play straight roles but gays only in gay roles."

Except tons of gay actors are turned down for straight leading man roles. Duh. Why do you think so many actors are in the closet?

"If gay actors want affirmative action for gays they should get Congress to pass a law. Since they can't get that, no one would take them seriously , some of them resort to Twitter bullying. Using the mob."

The "bullying" comes from Republicans like you who attack gays. Your whining about "affirmative action" makes you sound like a dumb Trump voter.

"And I loathe the fucking performative wokeness of all of this. These Twitterstroms are always whipped up by actors who cloak themselves in claims of progressiveness, but actually the root of their outrage can almost always be summarised as being 'Why wasn't I cast?'"

Why does the gay character have to be a camp stereotype? In the 90s, Disney caught a wave of bad publicity for making its male animated villains effeminate. (i.e. the Lion King)

by Anonymousreply 156August 14, 2018 3:21 PM

People comparing this to Call Me By Your Name are silly......those characters weren't camp stereotypes.

by Anonymousreply 157August 14, 2018 3:29 PM

I think this is becoming so controversial, because studios don't hire OPENLY gay men for straight characters, but love to cast OPENLY straight people for gay roles. Which leaves what roles for openly gay actors?

by Anonymousreply 158August 14, 2018 3:29 PM

The guy coming out to his friend, at r85, is played by Gwilym Lee who played Barnaby's sidekick for a few seasons in Midsomer Murders and is in the TV show Jamestown. IMO Gwilym looks much better with facial hair.

IMO the only good parts of Into the Woods were Meryl Streep’s fake singing voice and Chris Pine’s very campy performance. He is presumably straight but he did over the top flamboyance very well, and I’ve got no problem with it. Better him than Neil Patrick Harris. Likewise, I’d rather see Wentworth Miller play a moody, brooding character, gay or straight, than either Pine or Harris do that.

Random: I am 100% certain I just typed “than” and this interface changed it to “then.” The A and the E are not that close together, and I am typing slowly because I am paranoid about the pervasive typos on this site. Is there some sort of algorithm that auto-changes what we write to incorrect spellings sometimes? Could that be part of the annoying delay between the time words are typed and when they appear in the text box? Is it done just so that someone can quote it with a snarky “oh, dear”?

by Anonymousreply 199August 18, 2018 7:46 AM

Don't lie. Seeing two obviously straight actors have sex onscreen is undoubtedly a turn on, at least for me. Think Stephen Amell in Dante's Cove or Leonardo Dicaprio in Total Eclipse. If the SJW brigade were in effect, all those roles would have been played by unknown actors. Sometimes we don't care about realism and just want the fantasy.

by Anonymousreply 200August 18, 2018 7:49 AM

[quote] If the SJW brigade were in effect, all those roles would have been played by unknown actors.

Might as well watch porn at that point.

by Anonymousreply 201August 18, 2018 7:52 AM

The problem remains that sexuality seems to be such a big issue, even a dealbreaker, when it comes to actors playing fictional characters. You don't necessarily go "naw, I don't buy actor as serial killer, gangster boss, successful businessman, action hero, or as father!". Sexuality is still a big controversy to this day. Shows you how repressed we still seem to be. Hope that goes away with the old ones dying out and the queer community dominating world view.

R197 - watch Fresh Meat and Bad Teacher. Jack is brilliant and funny in both.

by Anonymousreply 203August 18, 2018 8:18 AM

I’m not more turned on by straight men than I am by gay men, R201. I find that convention to be tiresome and it is not true at all for me, and so I suspect it’s either false generally, or else we’ve got a really long way to go before gay men stop hating themselves. Whether in film and television or porn, chemistry between performers is what engages me. Some beautiful people I’ve seen come across like two mannequins being put in kama sutra positions—not a turn on—and some straight guys come off similarly wooden charismatically speaking. But then so do many gay men in a lot of terrible independent gay romance movies. Poor acting is a turnoff across the board. Palpable chemistry is a turnon in almost all cases. I’ve never been physically turned on by a woman, but I’ve even been psychologically charged up by some palpable chemistry between heterosexual couples onscreen, and likewise bored to tears by a lack of it.

Anyway, no, I’m truly not turned on specifically by men who are straight and turned off by men who are gay. If that phenomenon is as pervasive as you guys insist and as porn producers presume, then I really am a freak of nature. I don’t have any social action agenda related to this. My nature is that I am attracted to some guys and not others, and gay mannerisms are not a turnoff to me in any way. I am a little personally offended, being a gay guy, that it seems everyone assumes I’m into this notion of straight men being coerced into gay sex. That’s fucked up to me. It’s predatory. It’s creepy. I don’t want to trick anyone into sex or to coerce anyone who doesn’t want to have sex with me into having sex with me, and to identify as a gay person among gay and straight people alike who assume that all of us fantasize about converting or tricking unwilling or uninterested people into using their dicks on us is one of the few things that does give me pause about identifying as gay. If that’s a standard gay psychology then I am aberrant, and if it’s standard gay psychology then it means most gay men are predatory and sociopathic by nature and maybe we do belong in the DSM-V. I don’t believe it, but everyone has bought into the stereotype.

by Anonymousreply 204August 18, 2018 8:19 AM

So weird, R207. A few times this week I’ve ended up walking to work behind this bodybuilder guy I’ve never seen before who walks like a 1910s cartoon character walks. It’s mesmerizing and kind of freaky. His steps bounce, his joints seem rubbery, and he sort of jerks around. I'd rather see the best actor get in the part. Just based on the law of averages, there are far more competent straight actors overall than there are gay actors. It's also important to note that people don't cast just for talent, but star power. More famous actors are going to attract a wider audience. All this isn't to say that gay actors shouldn't be cast in more films, just that it should never have to be a requirement.

by Anonymousreply 212August 18, 2018 6:01 PM

[quote] In March 2018, Jack Whitehall joined the cast to portray the brother of Blunt’s character, although there was some backlash from the gay community about a straight actor playing a "camp gay character"....Principal production commenced on May 14, 2018 in Hawaii.

If the above is true, Whitehall is already involved in production since May and most likely can't be replaced. (I thought from some reports that he was just cast and I incorrectly assumed that they had not yet begun filming.)

Funny thing is, I have seen several interviews of him and his dad when they did their travel series and he wrote Jacks book, and HE seems very 'gay' himself. Its just the posh upperclass thing that pings the gaydar.

To be fair to him/Disney. He isnt 'camping' it up for this character; thats his natural personality. He is just a very fey man. Cute, and I;d fuck him in a heart beat of he was gay, but I highly doubt it. While I know datalounge thinks every man who dates/marries an asian is a closet case, lots of straight white geeks are obsessed with them and Gemma Chan is STUNNINGLY beautiful.
