The son is everything Lydia isn't ... rude, pushy, full of himself, narcissistic.

So, he’s basically your typical Datalounger, is what I gather, R8.

You obviously don’t know Lydia.

r12 You obviously don't know how to spell her name.

I went with R8’s spelling.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 12, 2018 2:52 PM |
Yeah, Lidia known far and wide for being a first-class, Ana Wintour-level cunt. She kept a slave for Christ’s sake!
I have often said that Lydia’s hair is a marvel of modern medicine with it’s Lazarus-like resurrection. She probably went to Bosley. A lace front wig would be much fuller than her current hair.

I rarely think anything she cooks on her show is appealing.
Better as pig food actually.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 12, 2018 6:28 PM |
Her son is a rather sexy bald guy. He used to be really heavy - my guess is that he found himself an Rx for Adderall and a personal trainer. He isn't a very friendly guy - Iv'e met Lidia and Joe quite a few times. She was plenty nice (maybe a show, but..). He plays the sommelier role when he does make appearances at restaurants.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 12, 2018 6:37 PM |
Be careful of wigs.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 12, 2018 6:40 PM |

Her son is a crook. He was business partners with that other crooked fat fuck Mario Batali when together they stole a huge sum of money in server tips from their employees. They were sued and lost the case and had to fork over $5 million to the employees. It was after that that he fled the US for Italy.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 13, 2018 7:51 AM |
I've never seen the first season of her PBS show rerun anywhere, but all her others shows are rerun forever.
I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact the first season sew as a very down to earth personality and used to describe her first restaurant as a neighborhood "spaghetti house".
Then Joe came along and suddenly it was a "bistro" with lines around the corner waiting to get in to taste her authentic Italian cooking.
Over the years and with each new show her backstory has become more embellished.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 13, 2018 12:38 PM |
She is not Italian. But she doesn't mind if you think she is.
FYI her recipes are crap.

[quote]FYI her recipes are crap
I think her recipes are ok, but she uses way too much olive oil and cheese. I've made a few of her recipes but I cut back on the oil and cheese, if the recipe calls for it.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 13, 2018 12:45 PM |
If you've seen one of her recipes you've seen almost all. Something with a ton of red pepper flakes, marinara sauce and cheese, that's pretty much it.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 13, 2018 3:02 PM |
Her cooking is incredibly basic - nothing exciting ever. I think that she is great for a beginner who is attempting to learn the BASICS of Italian cooking. It pretty much ends there. Her restaurants are often gorgeous from a decor standpoint, but again the food is really lacking.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 13, 2018 3:28 PM |
[quote] She's Croatian, isn't she?
[quote] Istrian?
Yes. From Pula, in Istria. Actually, her original last name is Motika ("Hoe" in Serbo-Croatian) which, when they emigrated to North America, they italianized to "Matticchio" since it's pronounced similarly.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 13, 2018 3:37 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 14, 2018 2:40 AM |
She had her grandson on a few times and he was very good looking and very tv-ready. Underage alas. That was several years ago.

Someone posted a story about her striding into one of her restaurants for a TV segment for her show and ignoring everyone. When the cameras arrived she acted grandmotherly and said everyone in the restaurant was her family. When the taping was finished she walked out without saying a word to anyone.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 14, 2018 12:30 PM |
R57 - I was invited by a very well-connected NYC friend to the grand opening of one of her restaurants (I live in LA and knew nothing about her outside of the PBS cooking shows). Joe is a jerk (he thinks that he is a De Niro-level star). She was somewhat friendly, but you can tell that it is all an act; honestly she seemed bored with it all and irritated. You can tell that her staff dislikes her - she critiqued their every move and often times seemed to make matters worse. My take is that no matter what you do and no matter how well you do it - she will want the opposite.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 14, 2018 4:47 PM |
She looks like my super's wife, they're both from Romania. The super is way past retirement age but he's hanging on to dear life to his free large pre-war apartment! Cannot stand him. Can't wait until he leaves.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 14, 2018 4:52 PM |
She's not really Italian, she's Croatian.
I once saw her show when she was cooking a ragu...she put potatoes & bell pepper in it. No real Italian does that.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 14, 2018 4:55 PM |
Does this old bald woman actually tell people she's Italian? I know she has a cooking show and her son was involved in some scandal in NYC with that fat turd Mario Batali, but I don't know much about her.
The last name Bastianich sure doesn't sound Italian. That alone should give her away!
FYI, 'Italian filmmaker' Lina Wertmuller isn't Italian either! Lina's full name: Arcangela Felice Assunta Wertmüller von Elgg Spañol von Braueich!
by Anonymous | reply 61 | August 14, 2018 5:08 PM |
Wertmuller was born in Rome. Father Swiss, mother Italian.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 14, 2018 5:22 PM |
I'm quite aware Lina was born in Italy. Her bio lists her as Swiss.
Even if her mother is Italian, that doesn't make her 100% Italian. I'm one quarter Italian, I sure don't tell everyone I'm 100% Italian.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 14, 2018 5:27 PM |
Wertmuller is Italian. No, her bio does not "list her as Swiss".
She's not "that great Swiss director Lina Wertmuller".
by Anonymous | reply 64 | August 14, 2018 5:57 PM |
[quote] My take is that no matter what you do and no matter how well you do it - she will want the opposite.
In my experience R58 that describes pretty much every Italian.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 15, 2018 12:38 AM |
I don't think any of these TV chefs are nice to the people who work for them or to fans once the cameras are off. There is something about people in that profession. Like the old chefs in France who actually beat their students for slight mistakes.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 15, 2018 2:28 AM |
[quote]Wertmuller is Italian. No, her bio does not "list her as Swiss".
Actually her bio does list her as Swiss. She's Italian by birth, but her family is Swiss. Just like Giselle Bunchen is Brazilian by birth, but her parents are German. "Bündchen is a sixth-generation Brazilian of German descent."
Lina W's bio at Wiki, lists her as Swiss, "Wertmüller was born Arcangela Felice Assunta Wertmüller von Elgg Spañol von Braueich in Rome in 1928 to a devoutly Roman Catholic Swiss family of aristocratic descent. She was a rebellious child, and was expelled from more than a dozen Catholic schools. Though her father wanted her to become a lawyer she enrolled in theatre school."
by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 15, 2018 3:37 AM |
R66, I saw an interview with Cat Cora talking about her apprenticeship in France. She said she threw away some parsley stalks and the chef saw her do it and slapped her. The interviewer was shocked, but Kat said the chef slapped everyone so she didn't take it personally.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | August 15, 2018 3:40 AM |
R67 Give it up. You're ridiculous.
From her bio:
"Lina Wertmüller, all'anagrafe Arcangela Felice Assunta Wertmüller von Elgg Spanol von Braueich (Roma, 14 agosto 1928, è una regista e sceneggiatrice italiana"
"Nasce a Roma il 14 agosto del 1928, da Federico, un avvocato lucano di lontane e nobili origini svizzere, proveniente da Palazzo San Gervasio (provincia di Potenza), e da Maria Santamaria-Maurizio, romana."
by Anonymous | reply 69 | August 15, 2018 10:21 AM |
Lidia is a lovely person and genuinely nice. I've been to her restaurant many time, and she is unfailingly friendly every time I've seen her. Her daughter is also very lovely. Joe is another story. He's full of himself. I heard him once disparage his grandmother as common. You're from Queens, buddy. Your mother is the reason for your success. Show a little humility and gratitude..

"BETTER THAN EVER!" implies it ever looked good, which it didn't.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | August 15, 2018 10:52 AM |
R72, no it doesn’t. It describes the current state of her hair as looking better than how it always looked before, which is a matter of personal opinion.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | August 15, 2018 2:10 PM |
Uh...okay, R73. You believe what you like. I shall do the same.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | August 15, 2018 2:13 PM |
I just don’t see the implication. It just means more better than before. She HAS had a slow but gradual improvement. R4’s picture is from, like, the early 90s. A few years ago she got some more density and it was strawberry blonde. Now it’s much thicker and the bangs are an improvement from the severe parting. Better than ever.

[quote]The last name Bastianich sure doesn't sound Italian. That alone should give her away!
That is her married name, dumbass, her maiden name was Mattichio.
Istria was part of the Venetian Republic for centuries, and was part of Italy from the end of WWI to the end of WWII. The people were a mix of both Slavic and Italian. Those living in the cities along the coast tended more toward the Italian (due to trade) and those inland more Slavic
My MIL's family came from Istria in the early 20c and were Austrians, my FIL was born in Istria between the wars and was an Italian citizen. MIL family spoke only Italian, and cooked Italian. FIL spoke the Slavic dialect. Both family names ended in "ich",.
Had Lydia been born 4 years earlier, she would have been an Italian citizen. After WWII and the formation of Yugoslavia, Istrians who considered themselves Italians were "strongly encouraged" (forced) to emigrate and many ended up in refugee centers in Italy. See "Istrian Exodus"

Thank you, R76. I've tried to say this on other Lidia threads. She is from a completely Italian heritagebloodline. The Istrian Exodus is a real thing. Her entire extended family still live in Italy. Her mother speaks with a heavy Italian accent because she IS Italian. I had one of the best meals of my life at Felidia and I use her recipes all the time. To say they're all alike is just idiotic. She knows that Italians don't live on spaghetti and red sauce. They use abundant fresh vegetables, some meat and local cheeses. I think she's an extraordinary chef. Joe Bastianich is, however, a huge dick who is pissed that he wouldn't be anywhere in life had he not been born of a famous, hard-working mother. I've watched her programs for many years. He's always been a miserable prick.

I have Croatian ancestry on my dad's side—his mother's parents were from Dalmatia, south of Istria along the Adriatic coast. I did a 23andMe test that showed I had significant Italian ancestry, and I didn't make the connection to Croatia until I did some Googling.

Don't care for her, her show, her cooking, her recipes, her ill mannered way of eating, her ugly rude son, her restaurants, her filty lucre, her dubious heritage, let alone her thinning hair. She more than likely obtained the hair from her slave to make a weave or hairpiece.

I was okay with her until the slave incident happened in Douglaston. I live in a city where she has a restaurant. The food is often excellent, but generally uneven. And when it's bad, it's really, truly awful. I ordered panna cotta once that must have had more gelatin in it than cream.
All along, though, just watching her shows, I'd always think "She's no Marcella. She's no Giuliano." I watch her shows from time to time, but I've never felt I HAD to watch them, as I do with Martha Stewart's Cooking School or ATK. Or Ina, of course, on Food Network.
