Disney was never going to be able to keep him due to the non-family friendly nature of the controversy. They have one of the most rigid set of restrictions in their contracts among all the studios for their talent. They cannot be involved in anything which damages their family friendly image.

If we're going to play conspiracy theory, given the tens of millions involved, it's more likely a Disney smear campaign than it is prescience or forewarning of worse to come.

Also, one of the points of negotiation was somehow trying to keep him involved without actually directing the movie. They want to use his completed script which is greatly complicating the negotiations.

The issue is public image.

Until it became a problem, they probably didn't see the need to act, if they knew about them. The level of front of mind awareness of these things was not what it is today.

Even 5 years ago, it was a different time. Sandusky had only just been convicted in 2012, Subway Jared was still a few years in the future. Outrage had not become a competitive and spectator sport and "me too" wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye and the damnation by association - such as with Spacy - hadn't begun.
