Christie Brinkley
I loved the days of the 90s supermodels, but still think Christie Brinkley is one of the greats. She's incredibly photogenic, and had a magnetic quality to her.
In spite of Cheryl Tiegs and Janice Dickinson claiming the title, I think Christie is actually the first supermodel.

In the 80s I would see her at parties with heavy hitting icons all around yet Christie was notably high wattage and dazzling. She found the right occupation, that's for sure.

R17, Lauren Hutton may not have been as striking or beautiful but Christie Brinkley was never versatile. She was never a fashion model. She never did runway, never appeared on the fashion bible American Vogue and as Linda Evangelista once said "you can't put Christie Brinkley in Chanel." She is the biggest attention seeking person alive. I remember seeing her in the Hamptons in the 1990's and early 2000's with her family. She barely paid attention to her kids if there was anyone else around. She was always flashing a giant rictus grin and ignoring her kids in order to soak up any attention from a stranger. I remember seeing some pictures of her at a Harry Potter movie premiere. Her kids were little and they just wanted to go inside and see the movie. But Christie wouldn't have it. Oh no! Not her. She kept walking away from the family and talking to the people standing outside the theater. Her kids were actually pulling on her arm to drag her crazily grinning self away from the strangers. She actually kept pulling back from her son to soak up more attention
Click the link and see the pics of her attention seeking. It tells a lot why all her marriages have failed

I also saw her at some event in the Hamptons. She had her whole family with her. She, as usual was ignoring them. They all were facing one way and Christie had her back turned to them and was facing another way with a giant grin on her face while some stranger took her picture. I felt so bad for her kids. She did it the entire afternoon.
Someone here once posted something about knowing her or knowing someone who knew her and they wrote, "the thing with Christie is when she's on, she's on and she's always on. Meaning, she's always seeking attention and putting on her phony "I'm so great and happy" persona

Cindy C was much more beautiful than Gia. Carangi's story is heartbreaking and iconic, but she looked 20 years older than her age and she was decidedly masculine. Scavullo had a hard on for her, that's the only reason she became briefly famous. Cindy Crawford is one of the most famous models of all time and she will remain that way for all time. Gia is a footnote.

Lauren Hutton was the first supermodel mostly because she broke a major pay barrier--first really big contract that got a lot of coverage. There were famous models, like Twiggy and Suzy Parker, before her, but they didn't make nearly the amount of money.
Suddenly, modeling became a way to make a lot of money if you were one of the lucky few. Not so much now.

One thing I can say for her appearance is that it’s remarkable that the young “California blonde” white girl was so deeply tanned in her youth—long before spray tans—and she doesn’t look like a leather sofa today.

My ideal supermodel would fall a reasonable somewhere between bland-as-fuck Christie Brinkley and skeletal-as-fuck “interesting” Coco Rocha. I know the Hadid girls are hated here, but both make more sense to me as renowned models than either Brinkley or Rocha because they are attractive, but they don’t look like they were made on an assembly line—or like they were made from spare parts.

R158 I’m just using them as examples of people who are much more interesting looking than Brinkley, whether you’re looking at before-surgery or after-surgery photos of them. Brinkley’s face just looks like it was made by CGI as “generic blonde.”

Janice Dickinson was so beautiful back in the day. Looks-wise, she had a Phoebe Cates exoticism mixed with girl-next-door sweetness. Personality-wise, ugh. But still, she had a more interesting look than Christie. Christie was mainstream America's ideal back in the '80s: blonde and bland.

First of all, I grew up in the era of the supermodels, and couldn't tell a picture of Gia if you bitchslapped me with it. Secondly, I've hated Brinkley ever since she stated that she had no idea who Billy Joel was when she started dating him. It was impossible growing up in the 70's to not know who Billy Joel was. Then there's the fact that she dumped one of her husbands because she was to poor for her.

R163 not to mention how does she have such a square face that didn’t become super jowly even in her 40s (a face that square usually does). So many rules of aging she hat defies.
I will say though that in person her surgery is significantly more obvious than in pictures. But heck, she’s over 60 and still looks great.
And good for her for never feeling she had to be skinny (yet she wasn’t a “big girl” like Shepherd).

Folklore is that Cindy Crawford owes her career to Gia. Gia's departure from the business do to drug abuse and later AIDS left a void for a dark haired/olive skinned beauty. Gia paved the way and Cindy just hitched a ride. Both were undeniably beautiful although Gia had much better breasts (again, a successful fashion model with large breasts was also unheard of). Gia's name today would have been much bigger had the drug use not ruined her career so quickly.

Beauty but supposedly a beast in real life. Her daughter Alexa is troubled (suicide attempt, plastic surgeries at young age) and I read here on Datalounge several years ago that she ran through assistants like Kleenex as she was an abusive bully to her staff.

Christie had that all-American sporty girl thing going--the Swimsuit editor of Sports Illustrated said Christie had the best hips in the business, which is useful when it comes to swimwear but she also looked good modeling sportswear--casual, relaxed clothing that was the foundation of the American clothing industry. Add that to good hair and a photogenic face and she fit a lucrative niche--not exotic, not interesting, but a big deal in the 70s/80s.
I feel a little for Alexa Joel--she has an interesting look, but she's not a traditional beauty--and when Christie's your mother and your sibs follow suit as golden girls and boys, it's got to be a bit tough, particularly since there seems to be so much focus on Christie and her looks.

R181 I have always found Alexa lovely her eyes are beautiful ,she's got a great figure, and is a good musician. I think some of her problems are due to being in the public eye at a young age in a society, that even post Kardashian, is still enthralled with "wasp" beauty as the ultimate in attractiveness . Many Americans seem to equate bland even features as beautiful. Another factor is her pathological narcissistic mother. Brinkley is an extremely selfish woman. I remember during the 3rd divorce from the architect a really disgusting story came out. Basically Alexa was in the shower and the architect guy pulled her out screaming in a rage because she left the dishes piled up. Brinkley wasn't too disturbed by this until he cheated on her, then it was time for a divorce. I have no parental instincts ( I'm pretty much the get off my lawn type )but even I was taken aback by Brinkleys lack of concern for her children. I have a feeling that Alexas problems are due to her upbringing and that we have only heard about half of the story.

R175, Cindy Crawford basically arose from Gia's ashes. Her agent took her to all the photographers that loved Gia's look--Scavullo, Albert Watson, Bill King--and they happily photographed Cindy, who became known in the business as "Baby Gia."

R198. Cindy Crawford and Paulina couldn't be more different. Paulina is one of the ultimate "beauty" models, kind of a static thing, but her photos are hall of fame. Cindy was a lush sexy moving strutting seismographic boom - with warm brown eyes. The most accessible AND gorgeous woman alive in her time. She was Avedon's idea come to life because she was everywhere doing everything. High fashion runways, Endless magazine covers, Pepsi commercials, Playboy, Talk shows and a Bad movie or two. R193 - all true. Gia was special and a trailblazer if you can use that verbiage for fashion models. Gia was incredibly "sexy" in a way that most models before her were not. Lesbian or not, she VERY MUCH appealed to straight men vs. just being a hanger for $$$ clothing. Dark, smoldering, voluptuous in all the right places and both tiny and thin in all of the others.. Her eyes spoke volumes. Cindy did owe her career to Gia in many ways (yes, she still had to show up and interview of course). Cindy was stunning but her eyes were not large and smoldering like Gia's (neither were her breasts). Millennials really do not know Cindy anymore; when the discussion of super models comes up - the younger crowd that I have spoken to personally only know Kate Moss. Moss did have an amazingly long run in the pop culture spotlight and she was a breathtakingly beautiful model (a chameleon with huge, bright eyes and a bone structure that none could match). Cindy was less fashion and more commercial/swimsuit/pin-up. It worked and she made a killing. She was a terrible actress, but that is nothing new when it comes to models. Poor Gia could have been a sensation with a few more years under her belt. Drug use that severe just kills bookings - no reliability whatsoever, erratic behavior and track marks all over those beautiful arms. It is what it is; she will be sorely missed by those who became adults years after her time in the business are still wowed by her work (me for instance).

R215 - Stephanie Seymour was gorgeous but really gained notoriety through her torrid affair with John Casablancas (owner of Elite Modeling Agency). Sifting through and discarding the Gia, Janice Dickinson, Twiggy nonsense, the real 80s/90s supermodels were Christie Brinkley, Paulina Porizkova, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss, Helena Christensen.

Gia's fame ended too early to be considered a "supermodel". It had everything to do with what these models were earning - and it was a rather short period of time when "they didn't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day". I would agree with most of your choices R253. My picks for supermodel status would be Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Christie Brinkley, Claudia Schiffer and maybe a couple of others - although these were the top earners and top names within the era. Kate Moss had the best longevity and was the shortest of the bunch (considered too short by most accounts, but became the exception to the modeling height rule).

The "supermodel" era ran from about 1990 to 1996 (give or take a year).. During that period models were considered far more interesting than actresses from a pop culture standpoint and were paid accordingly. Cable fashion television was also at an all-time high which fed this interest. This phenomenon has not occurred before or since and "the Big Six" became incredibly wealthy and famous.

"Brinkley was discovered in 1973 by American photographer Errol Sawyer in a post office in Paris. He took her first modeling pictures and introduced her to John Casablancas of Elite Model Management agency in Paris. Brinkley stated later: "I was basically a surfer girl from California. I never looked like a model." After being introduced to Elite, where Brinkley met the fashion photographers Patrick Demarchelier and Mike Reinhardt who called Eileen Ford and told her about Brinkley, she returned to California, and by the end of a lunch meeting with Nina Blanchard (Eileen Ford affiliate in Los Angeles) she had been booked for three national ad campaigns."

you're basing all these models looks on how they look with makeup on. My father was a fashion photographer in the 50's-80's. Niki Taylor was hatched from Cindy Crawford and Christie Brinkley's ovum.

R279 - the one thing that the successful ones had in common was a teeny, tiny frame with both long and slender arms, legs and necks. A stunning facial structure and large eyes are a huge plus as is facial symmetry. Makeup can only change so much. You either have these essential features or you don't - and most women DON'T.

Guess? Jeans model Shana Zadrick was a cross between Cindy Crawford and Raquel Welch. She was perfect for the 1990s, embodying the drag queen look that Paris is Burning, Rupaul, and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert popularized.

Brinkley is from the same era as Farrah Faucett. Both are toothy American blue eye blondes with deeply tanned skin. It was a different time back then , their looks were highly prized to the exclusion of other phenotypes. We are in the era of the Kardashian and I can't say this is any better.

Back in 2002 we had dinner with a couple who had just returned from a tour of the Amalfi Coast; their favorite visit was to the coastal city of Positano.
While describing their visit to Positano, they'd shared the sights from the cruise they'd taken to Capri. Upon returning to the pier in Positano to disembark, the woman described observing a tall, beautiful, blonde woman, with the longest legs she'd ever seen; she was accompanied by a little boy. The woman and the young boy had boarded a 'lift' in order to board one of the larger yachts in the harbor.
It was Nadja Auermann and her young son.

R297 what's interesting is that there is still an obsession with bland, even features. The only difference is that dark skin, hair, and fuller figures are now more accepted . What seems to be "in" right now are ethnic women but without overly ethnic features. For example, a big butt and full lips are OK, but a big nose is not.

Agreed R310. She was always fit during her modeling years yet in photos very often had a "fat face" look. That said, on film (National Lampoon's Vacation) - she looked great. Whatever the case, she was a very pretty woman and very sun-kissed California - if rather bland.

Christie does have a fat face, always. But she has an exquisite shape to her face - it is decidedly heart shaped, like Michelle Pfeiffer. Brinkley has a once in lifetime upward smile as well. Her features are extremely harmonious. She is personally vacant but her face gives her the illusion of some happy, sexy, beautiful secrets.

R309 and why shouldn’t it be? That’s what’s pretty and always will be. I’m not gonna pretend people the likes of Anjelica Huston are pretty when they fucking aren’t.
R314 Brinkley and Pfeiffer actually have very square faces (look at the jaw). I have a heart shaped face but it’s very different. I have high wide cheekbones but my jaw is much narrower.
Brinkley and Pfeiffer are just two rare cases that happen to look beautiful with that shape face. It’s generally (but not always) an unflattering face shape - look at all of the Kennedys. And Fawcett while pretty would have been more beautiful with a softer jaw.

Any kind of face shape can be beautiful.
Anyway, heart-shaped faces: Ruby Rose, ScarJo, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Campbell, Jessica Alba
Square-shaped faces: Olivia Wilde, Keira Knightley, Linda Evangelista, Sandra Bullock (though she pretty much always hides that jaw line).
Round: Like a square, but minus the jaw--Christie Brinkley and just about every fresh-faced all-American model of the period, Gina Goodwin. Round faces tend to become more square with age, so there's cross-over.
Long/Oblong--this can face shape can difficult, but Sarah Paulson and Liv Tyler manage just fine with it.
But, honestly, a lot of faces are a bit of this and that--and look different depending on age, hairstyle, angle, age . . .

I am going to assume that the first supermodels (based on salary) were Linda, Naomi, Cindy and Christy. They made an absolute killing during the initial "supermodel" years. Kate came a bit later and made just as much and lasted much longer. The term "supermodel" IMO applied to extremely high fees charged and huge name recognition during that era. Yes, many models were noteworthy and very much paved the way for these girls - but they were not "supermodels" as that term was mainstreamed around the time that the above list ruled the world so-to-speak.

I would tend to agree with you. All these girls are, of course, beautiful...but if you're going to go beyond that, you start looking at their physical movements, their emotion, and how connected (or not) the two are.
If you look at the full image linked below, Gia is emotionally present. She has created a mood, a story, with her body. It is subtly poetic...and it was her first professional job. This is a higher calibur of work than someone like Christie Brinkley, et al, were capable of.

Kate Moss was weirdly versatile, she could make just about any scenario work and she seems to actually like modeling--making a good picture. She also has a sense of style that few other models have had. I've always liked the fact that she just did her job without trying to be an actress or a celebrity on talk shows. She's done very few interviews over the years. She mostly just did her job and partied afterwards.

R247.. Janice Dickinson was the antithesis of the all American blonde models that were popular in the 70s and 80s. She had a very exotic look. Her look is more common in models, today.. leaning toward appealing internationally.

R393, if we're going by financial earnings as the rubric, there's debate as to who landed the first million dollar contract: Lauren Hutton for Revlon or Margaux Hemingway for Fabergé. Nonetheless, Vogue magazine declared Margaux "New York's New Supermodel" back in Sept 1975. Awful cover, though. Why is she hunched over like she was punched in the gut or is about to lose her cookies?

Linda E. has such a repulsive personality, it's hard for me to look at her pictures objectively. Every now and then some would catch my eye, and I'd admire them. But she's kind of gross.
There was some campaign she did looking kind of Italian, with a group of non model mama types. She was in a black dress, with a little crucifix. Those were very striking.
THIS might have been part of it, but the one I really liked was an outdoor shot, I think.

Linda Evangelista was absolutely known to be a bitch - incredibly conceited and generally nasty to anyone who she deemed her inferiors. Naomi had a temper at times, but Linda's resting state was bitch (according to most accounts). Oh well, she was both striking and uniquely beautiful - and very, very lucky. She was the supermodel who coined the "I don't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day" bit. Beautiful (if odd), right time, right place, right attitude. From the start of her career, she was always moderately successful (being a muse to at least 2 influential photographers), but cutting her long hair very short made her into a superstar. Most credit her with the genesis of the "supermodel" era - and she was arguably the most successful (number of magazine covers, shows walked, etc.). Ultimately, she was absolutely a "chameleon", but not one with much staying power. Kate Moss wins that blue ribbon - spanning the early 1990's until....well now really.

Linda E is 10 x the model that little ratface Gia was. Linda is the great actress - attitude, beauty, fashion, sex. You've caught her in the middle of something always. She's cinematic. She was kind of a genius of modelling. The best POSES always from the most regal and elegant beauty to the toughest chick in town. But she never looked like a catalogue model in clothes (hey gia) Linda is high fashion and glamor AND something going on inside.
The Top Ten models of modern times haven't really changed. It's pretty easy to build consensus. Evangelista will always be one of them. Gia, never.

There is no doubt that Linda was easily one of the greatest top 3 models of all time R459. I don't get your Gia hate, but I have no dog in the fight really. Linda will always be a top 3 and Gia (despite your dislike) could maybe squeak into the top 10 or 15, but just barely. Gia was not active long enough, nor was she active at a time when modeling super-stardom was yet a possibility. That said, the layperson off the street (particularly straight males, but basically anyone) would pick Gia to be the more gorgeous of the two women - 99 times out of 100.
by Anonymous | reply 461 | August 13, 2018 5:39 AM

Yes and the average male would pick Brinkley over both of them. So what's the point? The thread is about influential and famous and fabulous models. Not who your brother-in-law would rather fuck.
Linda E just told you a story AND sold you that damn purse. You don't even know it yet! The woman in this photo may intimidate you but you want to know more and you need that purse. Linda is what fashion modelling is all about. Aspirational selling. Romance, drama, glamour, elegance, decadence. She is everything you can't have - she has a thousand different faces. Just buy the purse. Evangelista was da bomb. A muse.

Most men do not buy purses R463, but I get your point and as I have stated above - Linda is easily a top 3 of-all-time model and I theorize that she appealed to other women. Women love to objectify women as well. Beautiful, tiny, well-proportioned bodies and symmetric features are always a commodity. Linda was (now she is a very average, plump woman at best) all of those things and yet possessed a non-threatening, almost alien appeal. Both Christie and Gia exuded sex appeal towards men - which could either threaten a woman or inspire the said woman to try to emulate the beautiful model - often times a slippery slope. Linda's appeal was that she was not terribly threatening and that she was also a great print model (her energy was palpable from the print ads). Gia was every bit as gorgeous as Christie and many would say that she was far more so. Beautiful blond or beautiful brunette? That would be the selection criteria really. These days - the average male polled will likely go for Gia (she had better almost everything than Christie - despite her olive skin tone and thick dark brown hair). Darker features with Caucasian skin tones are more in vogue now than sunburnt, round-faced, short blonds. Back in the 1980's, Christie would most likely have won the coin toss. Now, not so much. Again, none of this matters if the model is not able to SELL a product. Linda did that in spades.
by Anonymous | reply 466 | August 13, 2018 6:38 AM

I think Linda E. was someone who appealed to professionals in the fashion industry....while a smaller number of other models over the years (like Lauren Hutton, Gia, and yes, Christie Brinkley) were embraced by the public.as women they could identify with, women that men also found sexy and intriguing. It's a different kind of thing, where it isn't only about fashion anymore.
It's about striking a major chord.

My wise grandfather used to say " A difference of opinion is why poor land sells and ugly women get married". No one is nuts here - this is a discussion on a gay forum about either really old or now dead fashion models. Your metaphor still applies only to women's clothing one way or the other - be it a purse, fragrance, hosiery - all the same R468. Take a deep breath and exhale - no one cares all that much and all of these women were amazing during different eras for a multitude of reasons. Your precious Linda is very likely the #1 model of all time; there is no need to Gia-bash in order to get your point across.

Despite the book and cable movie, Gia was not famous or well-known outside the industry. People watched the movie for angelina Jolie, not because they cared about some crackhead lesbian who died of AIDS. Yeah, she started out beautiful but some of you seem to think she was god's gift to modeling when she was really just someone who was able to pose, probably because she was aching for her next fix.

Angelina wasn't a name when she made "Gia". In fact, "Gia" is what got everyone talking about Angelina Jolie. That said, Gia was not a big celebrity model when she was working--she was known in the industry, of course, but her drug habit made for a short career, despite some amazing pictures earlier on. She had one American Vogue cover, whereas models like Paulina and Cindy Crawford had multiple covers. Gia would have had that, but drugs did a number on her looks as well as her professionalism. She worked for about three years before her drug habit did a number on it. The big celebrity models all worked longer than that--with Kate Moss working well over 20 (Actually Moss still does some modeling and has now started a modeling agency. Wonder how that will go?)
Gia was a little like Edie Sedgwick in that a book about her tragic life story made her more famous after her death than she was before it.

R481, that was Gia's last cover, I think. Her face was all puffy from methadone and she was attempting a comeback. Scavullo was trying to give her a break, but she no longer had the look she'd had.
Re: Shari Belafonte--she got a break because of the celeb kid thing. Her face was beautiful, but she wouldn't have gotten through the front door without the name. Non-celebs have to have it all, celeb kids just to have part of it. Hell, I remember when Ivanka Trump modeled--she had the height, but her face was like a pudding, but she got work because of who she was.

Give it a rest. Cosmo covers are nothing interesting in hindsight. It was a ridiculous magazine and Scavullo could make Mindy Cohen look like a Cosmo Girl. The covers were a formula, a drone, a visual quaalude. Gia looked like shit there for a 22 year old chick. She looked 42. Even the greatest models looked all the same on Cosmo. See Lauren Hutton's Cosmo cover, she looks like a cross eyed Sears model and she was really the coolest louchest chick in downtown NYC. Gia looks like a Blockbuster employee strung out at the prom. Only one of the girls with supernatural perfect faces could make those bland propaganda covers look close to human. Odd. Because of course the covers flattened everyone to nothing but a dress and makeup.
Janice Dickinson, often disrespected here, appeared on 37 Vogue covers. More than most anyone.

Money talks.
Anyone who is consistently in the top ten for several years deserved to be called a supermodel, at least while they remain in the zeitgeist. Later, of course, many will fade into oblivion.
Here are the 10 high-earning models who made Forbes‘ 2017:
Kendall Jenner, $22 million
Gisele Bundchen, $17.5 million
Chrissy Teigen, $13.5 million
Adriana Lima, $10.5 million
Gigi Hadid, $9.5 million
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, $9.5 million
Karlie Kloss, $9 million
Liu Wen, $6.5 million
Bella Hadid, $6 million
Ashley Graham, $5.5 million
The idea of Chrissy Teigen being a super model is laughable as I assume much of that came from entertainment work.
Gisele was at the top for years, so yeah, might as well call her a supermodel.

So you did exactly what I recommended (not that it takes much cognitive power to figure out ), R506 - which should make it very clear that multiple people have posted the name Gia in this discussion (approximately 50 plus posts and running). When one does the math, 50 posts minus 10 posts = 40 other posters aka MULTIPLE POSTERS. What you will NOT notice in my posts is either venom or nastiness. You might want to try that route as well.

I'm not being nasty I'm merely pointing out you are a deluded stan. And someone else suggested you are also the Sharon Tate stan, who has been the subject of our morbid fascination, pity, and light amusement for several years. Bravo for branching out to Gia.

I totally forgot about Frederique. I loved her. Not sure she was an outstanding model, but she was a character. Mannish, gravely voice, and seemed not to take it too seriously. She's only 50?

The Gia is the most beautiful model of all time poster has many more than 10 posts on this thread. He posts from two sites and answers himself, always in response to a REAL poster. One of his personas is expansive and more open minded, the other is childish and fake naive. A stan AND a troll in one.
He likes Margaux Hemingway too and hates Cindy Crawford and Evangelista. He'll post something funny because he's a dual personality, but there's not humor in it.
Gia was a rat faced junkie whose "great" career lasted less than 3 years. She was pretty and did look good for about 9 months. She wasn't just a junkie, she was a miserable bitch that nobody understood. That poster has enormous and knowledgeable (google) crushes on a few unlikely or unpopular women. He's lonely and relentless and is probably just a mentally ill a lesbian. Except he's a dude. Also the Lange Loon.
Watch for his multiple posts, he'll come in with a non sequitur about another model or some other trivia but you can recognize his crazy and his style once you see the pattern.
Karma didn't hit Evangelista. She's the most famous and praised model in history. She's living her life. Karma hit Naomi Campbell and ugly Kate Moss and a few others trying desperately to remain glorious, when their only talent was their genetics and luck.
KARMA didn't touch Gia. Her life was unlucky. She was an average looking italian dyke who got lucky, tasted fame and demanded everything. They all lied about her. There are few pictures of her that don't show her heroin eyes. She was used and she used them. She was a bit pretty in professional photos only, but nowhere as striking or beautiful as her "successor" Cindy. Only mentally ill people are attached to Gia's memory. A models life is never important and she did nothing to redeem herself as a human being. Quite the contrary. She was to be avoided. One or two models transcend this as one or two designers transcend the waste of time that is fashion.
SO, Keep multiple posting LOON. One sign of your illness matt is that you never tire. But you consider yourself more clever and knowledgeable than you are. You picked a loser with Gia. You won't convince anyone of her greatness.

R508 well she has a fair amount of fine lines but nothing else has changed- nothing has sagged, no part of her face has gotten thinner or fatter, she hasn’t “altered” her face in any way. Does that make sense? I have far fewer lines than she does but I would say I’ve aged worse thus far because attention is drawn to the lower part of my face (as often happens when you age) and I just look more “tired.”
Also doesn’t she have emphysema ? How is she even living?

Top Ten Supermodels: Christie Brinkley, Paulina Porizkova, Helena Christensen, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour, Niki Taylor, Milla Jovovich, Tatiana Patitz

Gisele was the first of the Brazilian wave of models, so she was the start of a big wave--great body and good, energetic mover in photos, so fashion magazines really liked her. Once read that she had the best back in modeling (modeling's so weird that way--people in fashion really do have opinions about body bits and pieces.) Also good hair. Not a great face, but a lot of models don't have great faces--often too thin and angular.
Gisele's photogenic, which isn't the same as beautiful.

Christie was very fetching and certainly was iconic. I think that she was one of the first "cross-over stars". Her acting ability was dim at best, but she did light up the screen when she attempted. Gia Carangi however was drop-dead gorgeous. Gia was one of the very few supermodels who had large tits and yet was very much still in demand. She also had the most beautiful hair of any model - EVER

Gia's name today would have been much bigger had the drug use not ruined her career so quickly

It is what it is; she will be sorely missed by those who became adults years after her time in the business are still wowed by her work (me for instance)

My wise grandfather used to say " A difference of opinion is why poor land sells and ugly women get married". He also used to make me suck his cock and lick his old nutsack. I had to suck for hours while I looked through Cosmo. BUTT, no one is nuts here - this is a discussion on a gay forum about either really old or now dead fashion models.

I am not sure that the term was coined then, but Gia is BY FAR my favorite of the above girls R393. She was jaw-droppingly beautiful, sexy, famous and of course also infamous. R395 - Kate had the perfect face according to the taste-makers of the fashion realm as well as according to scientists (see link). She is older now (obviously) but rocked the fashion world in the early to mid 1990's. Kate Moss, Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Heche, Halle Berry and just a handful of other women can boast the fact that they have(had) the most beautiful facial symmetry in nature. I have a homemade Gia dildo if anyone is interested in marketing me?

I'm a 70 year old fag, but I call myself Gia. I'm too sweet to be Linda.

Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 dress at one point in NY when she first married Miller and wasnt making movies for fox constantly. Her body changed thru her career and in some times she was stunning and at others larger but still beautiful. Interestingly the last 2 years of her life she became anorexic believe it or not....... and she lost a hell of a lot of weight. She was extremely thin the last 9 months......at her autopsy (marilyn) weighed 116 lbs and was 5 ft 6.

R314 I am here to tell you that fat faced girls with heart shaped faces age better than any other--blond or brunette. When I was young I HATED my face shape and my rather high but full cheeks. I even looked into the surgery in which the fat pads inside the cheeks are removed in order to give you a more sucked in look.
Well here I am, Christie's age(also named Christie) and I am so happy that I left my cheeks as they were. So many of my peers have that drawn, tired long face look now and I still have the apple cheeks happening. And, FWIW, I too was a sun baby in my 20s and I have nearly wrinkle and line free skin on my face. I did have a serious peel in my 30s to get rid of the sun damage, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if CB did as well.

Christie had a wholesome, very healthy, California golden girl image, who looked great in swim suits and outdoorsy backgrounds. She may not have been high fashion (though, I think she did Vogue covers and some editorial work?), or did runways (that I recall), but she was great for the Cover Girl campaigns and SI. Linda was adored by photographers and the fashion world, but she was never a model with huge crossover/mainstream appeal. She was never on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, which is one of the big things for getting a model a large non-fashion following. She definitely fits in the "supermodel" category and she had the Ralph Lauren campaign, but I never heard straight guys talk about/drool over her, which I heard for models like Cindy, Christie, Paulina, Cheryl Tiegs. Even Kate Moss worked a sexier angle than Linda--Kate may have been a waif, but she had a comfort with nudity that made up for that.
But Linda was never about sexiness and that limited her non-fashion fame.

I think Moss really racked up fame when people in NYC started scrawling FEED ME on this poster ad of her looking emmaciated in a Calvin Klein bikini. The poster was plastered all around town on bus stops...so then the graffiti was all around town.

R584, Paulina, in her prime, was more of an editorial & commercial model than a runway model. Back in the day, there was a clear distinction between editorial (fasion) models, commercial models, glamour models, and runway models. Runway modeling was low on the totem pole because a) it paid considerably less than the other types (even catalog modeling, and b) you didn't have to be pretty, just tall and lanky and able to wear the clothes well.
Around the 1990s is when the distinctions blurred, with curvy glamour models like Cindy and Naomi and Elle doing runway, editorial, commercial, glamour, swimsuit/lingerie modeling. That's why they were supermodels, they transcended all categories; they could do all.

Addendum: of course, there were models who were blurring the lines of distinction prior to the 1990s, but 1990s was the turning point where it became the norm to freely jump back and forth between runway, editorial, swimsuit, commercial, etc., rather as career stepping stones.
