“This weird kid turned up at school, he was really tall but he looked about nine and was this odd character. My kind of boyfriend. Well, not really, but he might as well be, we don’t really leave each others’ sides.” — Matty Healy talks about his first impression of George Daniel
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 1, 2018 2:37 AM |
No. He talks about being mistaken for gay and doesnt care. However, I suspect he would be more likely to come out as a transwoman, then gay.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 1, 2018 3:37 AM |
i'd fuck him hard. he seems like he would love dick
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 1, 2018 6:44 AM |
They all say that, R4. The label wants the audience to be as wide as possible and gay men round out the predominately female fandom. He may indeed be gay or bi but any REAL talk of that would likely be quashed by those who have a financial interest. He is too valuable as a pin up for little girls to become one himself IMHO.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 2, 2018 1:11 AM |
He is a junkie. Of course it was his drummer, George, who he told he needed to go to rehab. I would not be surprised if Healy fancies them the new Mick and Keith. Wonder if that dynamic is really weird for the other guys in the band?
Either they fool around, fuck, or gay bait as well as the Jonas boys.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 2, 2018 1:15 AM |
Matt and George, I sense a theme
It is only H that Matty has given up. None of that abstinence stuff. He strikes me as very self important and as unmedicated bi-polar.

George and esp Matty gushing over Chris Martin to Nick Grimshaw. Last pop singer to do so to such an extent was that super masc Harry Styles. They way they joke about their married couple lifestyle is sweet and I guess just veiled enough to keep the teen girls buying concert tix?

So I went downstairs and told George I should go to rehab.” Daniel is the band’s production whiz and Healy’s closest friend; they live virtually next door to each other in east London. Healy says his habit was the first time a secret ever came between them.

Helped by a horse but he says that twice it was the impact on his relationship with George that got him to clean up. That is sweet and he has stated it to several journalists.
He now takes piss tests in front of his bandmates so they do not need to worry he is using again. It is hard to remember that they are still late 20s, they have been around forever.

R30 let's not forget that Ms. Chung was Nick Grimshaw's designated Hag for what felt like centuries. I had quite forgotten how dire the hipster smugness radiating from morning Channel 4 was once, and watching it in action all over again I for one am glad that the so-called 'indie' movement has died a death in Britain.

Right, R45? That is what I was thinking when I posted it. Only Cara, Rita and Harry were missing.
Matty seems to try to push things a bit, which is not nothing. Cannot see him coming out, there is a lot of industry $ riding on him seeming interested in young women. They originally had a pretty mixed audience but now it is more like One Direction. His beard blatantly groping the breast of another woman in a photo is quite funny though.

Lol, R49.
Taylor no longer looks young, that is for sure. Nick is like the Pied Piper of gay London.
Matty needs to get diagnosed - the uppers/downers and pathological over-sharing always seem to track with bi-polar. With all the drinking and smoking weed he does while performing and in interviews, and with how garish and gaunt he looks at times, he kinda reminds me of Johnny Depp. He has missed the 27 Club, so there is that.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 2, 2018 3:28 AM |
My sister is a sneaky 1975 fan and hoodwinks me into listening to or watching his interviews. I've noticed many annoying traits about him from close observation, but the worst is his obnoxious condescending laughter. He also struggles to let someone else tell a story without interrupting or acting out, and interjects often with histoires d'incroyable to steamroller a captive audience. Thankfully I'm not often subject to this, as I don't ever listen to BBC Radio or hang out with teenagers of my own accord.
Matt gives the impression of someone inwardly cringing about his lack of natural intellectual fortitude and emotional resilience as well as his comfortable upbringing but masking it with silly bravura; he thinks he's too cool for the private schools he ditched and thinks we should believe him, even though I'm afraid it's clear he's a cookie-cutter indie-rocker with an outdated gimmick (Julian Casablancas, Michael Stipe and Morrissey did all this much better and years ago).
He's nice & harmless though, seemingly; just a sadsack toff who likes to prance about like a tit for very good money. I can't blame him, it's a poor economy for a Millennial of any stripe. I have to give it to him that's he's got an ear for a lyric and a kind personality despite all the rest. I will venture that if he weren’t quite such a needy wet jizzmop perhaps he could forgo performing sans shirt-buttons. He'd be less exhausting & embarrassing too if he'd just come out as Bi, but I suppose that isn't cryptic enough to magnetically pinch little girls' pocket-money or gauche enough to chagrin old Dennis. As a gay person with a sense of humour I think I could become a fan if he chucked in this absurd pop-pap that's causing him so much ANGST for a more fun career in the theatre or something ("Money, Dear Boy", I know).
Good luck, Matt old man. I know the Home Counties model-wife of apt cachet you'll eventually grit teeth to marry will adore you.

The 1975 frontman says that he “vividly” remembers the moment he saw two dancers kissing backstage at a show starring his mother Denise Welch.
“The first passionate kiss I saw was between two blokes,” he told Shortlist. “I remember it vividly.”
“How intimate it was, and I wanted that intimacy. It was an erotic and sexual presentation to do in front of a child, now I think of it. I just saw it as sexy. As a kid, if you see two grown-ups kiss properly, you’re a bit like: ‘What’s that? What’s that feeling? I didn’t know we did that with each other.’ I think my perceived ideas of masculinity stem from my first idea of sexuality.”
Discussing how it shaped his own experiences, he said: “Well, you can look at whether sexuality is a social construct – which, of course, it isn’t. But when I was a kid most of the people [around me] who were successful and doing what they wanted to do were gay.
“I associated that freedom of self with freedom of expression. I think I looked up to them, not as pariahs or outsiders, but as people who were truly themselves. I’ve always found that engaging.”
Healy added: “I’ve thought: ‘Maybe it’s unusual to be as flamboyant as I am, or unusual to be as in the gay world as I am… What does that mean? Am I a bit gay?’ And then I was, like, ‘No, that’s not how it works! It comes down to who you want to fuck.”

Conflicted sexuality is something loads of people go through...
Seems to be a promo theme for the new album?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 15, 2018 2:24 AM |
What's with all these wealthy school-dropout boys using full albums just to whine about how bi they are, lately? And why do girls & women who buy into this music find such a theme even slightly interesting? Why does Matt presume we want or need to hear about any of this dull claptrap about his personal life, just to 'get' his album?
And where's the rage in pop these days? Where's the noise, the big ideas, the righteous indignation about...well, anything of more consequence? Slinky sloshy hooks stirred in with justshowerthoughts are fun, but...
Things weren't like this in pop even as recently as 10 years ago. For example; I don't like Chris Martin much at all, but at least he had the good grace to angst about his sexuality or man-troubles incognito via songs he wrote for women artists as he went about his business like a productive humble closet-case.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 15, 2018 8:04 AM |
Same, R62, those bombastic CP pianos, shudder.
Matty used to go on about his grandfather the drag queen and his own ardor for Leo D , so he is getting closer, anyway. Amazed that interviews like R56 exist. The Danish interviewer he hits on relentlessly is quite handsome, but the way he comes alive talking about putting drugs up his ass is a bit much for someone with such a young audience.
His current, men kissing is hot, promo of COURSE, is linked to musing about marriage to his very young Aussie girlfriend/beard and knocking her up in the near future. Hot men kissing is a bit more fun to hear him to go on about than the past year of articles re: his rehab, no?
Martin is a bit more dignified, he also writes songs that do not LIFT guitar lines from Joy Division.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 15, 2018 12:16 PM |
R62, do you remember the blatant homophobia of pop songs, like for example, Money for Nothing, a collab between Dire Straits and Sting?
See the little faggot with the earring and the make-up Yeah buddy that's his own hair That little faggot got his own jet airplane That little faggot he's a millionaire
Healy has said that his father was mates with Knopfler, in fact, his was the first guitar he ever played.
In contrast, his band actively supporting LGBT kids and his musing about how hot finds men kissing is, seems pretty benign and likely true, rather than baiting. And men can find the slinky hooks downright catchy as well.

Famous parents and lots of navel gazing. Quelle surprise!
The music is good though. First saw them on a Palladia (now MTV Live) concert, they are an excellent live band. Was very impressed.
IIRC, Fallon or Seth Meyers gave them their first late night TV exposure in the US.

[quote]See the little faggot with the earring and the make-up Yeah buddy that's his own hair That little faggot got his own jet airplane That little faggot he's a millionaire
Actually, if you ever read an interview with Mark Knopfler where he mentions what the song is actually about, he explained the actual context of this lyrics.
"The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real....
In 2000, Knopfler appeared on Parkinson on BBC One and explained again where the lyrics originated. According to Knopfler, he was in New York and stopped by an appliance store. At the back of the store, they had a wall of TVs which were all tuned to MTV. Knopfler said there was a man working there dressed in a baseball cap, work boots, and a checkered shirt delivering boxes who was standing next to him watching. As they were standing there watching MTV, Knopfler remembers the man coming up with lines such as "what are those, Hawaiian noises?...that ain't workin'," etc. Knopfler asked for a pen to write some of these lines down and then eventually put those words to music,
The first-person narrating character in the lyrics refers to a musician "banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee" and a woman "stickin' in the camera, man we could have some fun". He describes a singer as "that little faggot with the earring and the make-up", and bemoans that these artists get "money for nothing and chicks for free".
"The lyrics for the song have been criticised as being homophobic. In a late 1985 interview in Rolling Stone magazine, Knopfler expressed mixed feelings on the controversy:
I got an objection from the editor of a gay newspaper in London – he actually said it was below the belt. Apart from the fact that there are stupid gay people as well as stupid other people, it suggests that maybe you can't let it have so many meanings – you have to be direct. In fact, I'm still in two minds as to whether it's a good idea to write songs that aren't in the first person, to take on other characters.
The singer in "Money for Nothing" is a real ignoramus, hard hat mentality – somebody who sees everything in financial terms. I mean, this guy has a grudging respect for rock stars. He sees it in terms of, well, that's not working and yet the guy's rich: that's a good scam. He isn't sneering."
You are welcome.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 16, 2018 12:29 AM |
People singing along with the song, for the most part, had no idea of the origins of the lyrics though, R68. And despite his mixed feelings about the homophobia, he and Sting made bank off it.
Sneering and homophobia probably DOES describe the reaction of many fans of the song. Talk about having it both ways.
Thanks for sharing though, R68. It is interesting to know that some appliance store guy more or less wrote the lyrics for him. It was one of their biggest songs, maybe Dire Straits should have hired him?

Can R66/R69 just do one with the hair-trigger sensibilities? Most gays are tough & smart enough to understand a lyrical POV, and not take it personally.
And comparing Knopfler unfavourably to Healy? I shudder. That's truly despicable, and I think even Matt would agree with me on that.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 22, 2018 8:56 AM |
I made no such comparison, R76.
I merely raised the homophobic content of lyrics from one song from one generation and compared it to the actions of a band in another in supporting charities for gay and lesbian kids.
Knopfler changed the lyrics in live performances so he must have become concerned about sensibilities, no? And no, not mine, R76. Good on him for writing a song people are still talking about 30+ years later and for tweaking it.
It is ok if people like Sultans of Swing and also find Someone Else a bop.
Matty recently spoke of getting married and knocking up his very young beard/gfriend, so whoever called that, good job. Wonder if she carries Narcan? He also went on about how erotic men kissing is. Hmmmm.

Chung claims to be bi but to never have gotten off with a woman. She has bearded for men who are far more obvious than Turner.
Matty and Harry Styles have been linked to many of the same beards/PR rx types.
Healy may be bi, but if not, a young model who wanted to get into acting was a great beard choice. The fact that she was 17 - do not think you can sign contracts then?

Healy & Co are said to put on a fun live show by all accounts.
I do not think he will trans to a woman, but rather stay a feminine guy. Having a grandfather who does drag and a father who plays a transvestite on tv is curious.

I went to see them when they came to my city. It was a great, fun concert. However, it was mostly teen and young women with a handful of gays. My friend wanted to smoke his joint, but decided against it because no one else in the crowd was really smoking or drinking. Matt was drinking and obviously a bit fucked up onstage. He wasn't sloppy or anything though. I'm booking tickets for their next show asap.

They are kind of aging out of that demographic R92, maybe the new music will appeal to them less?
A friend who is a musician who saw them at a festival early on said that the audience was more adults with a lot of guys. Maybe it will move back that way. He has been a fan since seeing them live.
The only performers more weed friendly might be Snoop Dogg. Not sure they have a song without drug references? Toke up!

His mom sure is fun at 60. Hard to imagine what she was like as a boozer and coke addict if she acts like this in public now? She has complained that Matty does not take or return her calls, that she has to call people around him. Cannot imagine why?
For anyone who thinks their parents are embarrassing this holiday season, they probably cannot top this kind of behavior. Even among performers, this smacks of substance abuse, bi-polar disorder, narcissism and who knows what else. Have met Dave Grohs mom, who is lovely and dignified, while still being a huge fan of her son. Maybe it is some cultural difference.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | November 24, 2018 6:14 PM |
So this older woman dates every gay/bi pop singer? As does Swift? Just not plausible. I would say he could be bi but why the aggressive linking with known beards if he could find his own girlfriend? And then a 17 year old who is looking for a PR come up? So organic.

Matty has gone on air with Grimmy several times, including with his drummer in tow, at link. Another time he interviewed Tom Daley. Two bottoms do not a top make, yadda, yadda, but there was a fair amount of giggling.
He dressed in very feminine clothes for a while but seems to have veered toward suits. Still lots of money to be made...

The new album is getting good reviews. The Sunday Times made it album of the week and said this
One month into sessions for this album, Matt Healy’s bandmates were gearing up to stage an intervention over his ruinous heroin habit. The 1975’s frontman beat them to it, coming clean and, later, after intensive rehab, getting clean. When the Cheshire four-piece reconvened in bucolic Northamptonshire, they did so at a juncture in their career — two No 1 albums, a zealous army of fans, the world at their feet — where chucking it all away would have been both criminal and a terrible cliché.
It might seem an odd thing to say about an album that addresses, angrily and honestly, issues such as addiction, relationships, social media and whether the world is essentially going to hell in a handcart, but you can almost hear the relief. The intricate, impressionistic production, the musicianship, the vocals: it’s as if the band are thinking, “We’ve got our singer back. OK, he’s a handful, he’s all over the place, believes one thing one minute, the opposite the next, but... phew!” Which is a pretty fair description of this record, too. Shorter than their last (double) album, it still sprawls and veers — here concise pop perfection (TooTimeTooTimeTooTime), there a state-of-the-nation stadium-slayer (Love It If We Made it), then a tangent into lachrymose supper-club jazz (Mine) and dust-blown Americana (Be My Mistake) before alighting on structure-shirking electronica (How to Draw/Petrichor) and the epic, lighters-aloft torch song I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes). A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships is unwieldy, provocative, absorbing and uncontainable. Bit like the singer, then.

The 1975's appearance at this year's The Brits Awards was phenomenal. I believe they won 2 awards that night. Matt's rabbit hat is a hoot.

Considering he asked for, and received, a pair of Shawn Mendes’ CK underwear I’ll say definitely yes.
