Many were interviewed and said they did not enter illegally and would have been afraid to do so. They said the signs were confusing and that upon arriving they had spoken to border guards who took their children anyway, accusing them of illegal entry.

BTW, A young female jogger in upstate NY a few months ago, who had no idea she had illegally crossed several feet onto the Canadian side of the border paid the price for that honest mistake. That little oversight cost her a hefty fine and two weeks in jail.

2- Mexicans and Central/South Americans are not all one and the same as they are from different countries.

That's now what I read on CNN or a site similar. The news story indicated that the people requesting asylum did deliberately cross the border illegally for a practical reason. It was said that the legal asylum holding areas were full at the border and the people would not be allowed to enter until there was room. So, because they feared staying in Mexico, they decided the better option would be to cross illegally and get into U.S. custody rather than be at the mercy of local or federal Mexican authorities.
