My husband and I are going to Vegas for the first time in February but we won't have a car. We are staying in the middle of the strip. At the risk of sounding like old farts (in our late 40s) we've never used UberLyft. Should we? How does it work? I believe there is a bus (the Deuce?) and a monorail and lots of taxis, but how should we get to the dispensaries and the grocery store and anywhere else off the strip we go? Tbh, the thought of ride-sharing scares me. Weird drivers and all that shit. But we'll totally do it if it's the best option.
Best way to get around in Vegas

The monorail is awesome - works really well. You will barely need to leave the strip, if at all. Maybe just slightly for the dispensaries (I've never been to any in Vegas area). But, grocery stores, liquor stores, etc. are all right there. Use Lyft or Uber if you really need to leave the strip area. There are a couple fun gay bars, and you'll need to Uber or Lyft to those as well, as they are not on the strip. Start learning about the monorail now - it's well worth it, and very easy. I went to Vegas twice last year for a conference, and a wedding, and used it quite a bit.

OP / R2. Look it up. Quit being lazy.

Just cab it..u pay 30-50 % more but if Uber intimidates you...my first Uber was in Vegas and the guy was cool and offered me a joint!

No grocery store on strip or monorail area...convenience store only. Why do groceries? Eat out! Have fun
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 31, 2018 2:13 AM |
I go to Vegas all the time. Uber or Lyft is the easiest way to get around. Just download the app to your phone and set up an account.
But you can use taxis if ridesharing intimidates you. Taxi will be more expensive. You can get one at any hotel or casino.
You can walk almost anywhere on the strip if you’re up to it. And there’s really no need to leave the strip unless you absolutely want to.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 31, 2018 2:20 AM |
There’s a dispensary near the Palms and Rio hotels off-strip. You’ll probably need to Uber or lyft to get there, or take a cab. But you could walk if you want... about a mile or so from the strip...straight shot.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 31, 2018 2:24 AM |
And don’t go to a grocery store. There are restaurants everywhere of every style and price-range. Multiple Walgreens/CVS style convenience stores all along the strip if you need snacks or other items.

Not a queen. Straight vagina owner. We can drive. Don't wanna. I was looking for a few first time Uber experiences. I'm nervous. I have visions of getting in the Uber and the doors lock and our fates are sealed as we are driven to our deaths by a murderous driver. We will absolutely walk almost everywhere. But gotta hit all the dispensaries. If taxis are more expensive, then Uber it is. Will probably hit up Walgreens for snax and skip the grocery store.

Why go to Las Vegas?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 31, 2018 2:32 AM |
Free shuttle to rio from harrahs every 30 mins or so
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 31, 2018 2:32 AM |
Had a super old Uber driver in Palm Springs which was scary...seemed not all there
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 31, 2018 2:34 AM |
Lyft and Uber are very convenient. No need to be nervous about it.
Make sure you tip the driver. In lyft, you can do it in the app after your ride. Not sure about Uber.
In Vegas, all of the hotels have designated Ride-sharing pickup areas where you wait for your car. You will have to follow the signs in each hotel, or the app might tell you the location.
Honestly, unless you’re leaving the Strip... it’s easy to walk everywhere if you’re in reasonable shape.

That shuttle from Rio to Harrah's no longer exists R13.
Las Vegas is the only place I've ever used Uber or Lyft, but I do it there frequently. I have always had a great experience. I actually prefer Lyft. It is all done through the app - you set up a credit card on the app ahead of time and decide how much to tip after the ride. All of the major casino hotels on the strip have a specific place to get Uber/Lyft pickups. Couldn't be easier.

There is a dispensary right down past the palms. You can take the monorail most everywhere on one side of the strip. You can walk most of it. If you really need to go somewhere with a car, call lyft or you can flag one of about 100 taxis at any hotel.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 31, 2018 2:41 AM |
There is a shuttle from the Palms to the strip and back... but it might only be for guests of the Palms, not sure about that.
If using lyft/Uber, don’t request a ride until you are at or near the pickup spot. Drivers don’t like to be waiting for you to show up once they arrive.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 31, 2018 2:46 AM |
Thanks for the tips. Is there a big difference between uber and lyft?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 31, 2018 2:50 AM |
R12, why not? $350 pp for air and room, legal weed, great food, and we live in Mississippi so anywhere is a step up for us.

R20=OP, btw
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 31, 2018 2:54 AM |
I stayed at the north end of the strip and, after taking a hotel shuttle from the airport, walked everywhere. Mid-strip you are even closer to everything. It can take a while, but it's a good way to see the city and it is safe and easy to find your way around.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 31, 2018 3:05 AM |
Uber used to not let you tip in the app... so you would have to give the driver a cash tip if you wanted. It was awkward... so i started using lyft exclusively. I think Uber has changed that now, but I haven’t used them in a while.
Most of the drivers are with both services, so I don’t think there are many differences.
You will get to rate the driver in the app after your ride. The driver also gets to rate you. As long as you tip and aren’t an asshole, they will give you a 5-star. Don’t be an ass, because other drivers might refuse your ride requests later if they see you have a low-rating.
Also, since you are going to Vegas in February... be aware that the weather will be chilly but sunny... so you will definitely need a jacket or coat.

They have these magic carpets out there, which are basically perfect for the gay visitor.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 31, 2018 3:16 AM |
Uber / Lyft often aren’t perfect on location. Often the driver ends up around the corner and has to call you to figure out where exactly you are. It can also be a longer than expected wait - during which you may see empty taxis driving by. But you should definitely download and install app before you go just so you have it. Sometimes you can’t find empty taxis.
Monorail doesn’t work for me - it can be a long distance from certain locations. I found it easier to just walk where I was going rather than hike to the station to take the monorail to a station from which I would have to hike again.

Lyft, OP. Parking is a pain. Taxis are more expensive and they cheat you buy taking the long way. Criminal taxis in Vegas.

Here's Lyft at the Las Vegas airport. Special location.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 31, 2018 4:07 AM |
Make sure to ask where the official Lyft pickup area is at each hotel. Should be near the taxi pickup area. Sometimes the app will tell you but it's easy to ask front door staff.

I think those pedicabs are cool. If you get a hottie you can offer him a cool lemon coke with chipped ice afterwards.
