It wasn't from a lack of effort on her part or people trying to make her happen!
Why did Glenn Close's career go straight down the shitter?

No, R1....you're in the right thread.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 27, 2018 9:45 AM |
She's too cold to be a truly big, popular star.
Faye Dunaway was cold in the 1970s, too, and it didn't stop her from being a successful leading lady. But she was beautiful.
G isn't. So she's for the most part been relegated to character-type roles from the beginning.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 27, 2018 9:53 AM |
Fatal Attraction was her version of Faye Dunaway's Mommie Dearest.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 27, 2018 9:59 AM |
Nice picture from her triumphant one person performance as Conan o'Brien: The Tonight Show War.
R8 Fatal Attraction was her version of Faye Dunaway's Mommie Dearest.
Mmmm....Glenn Close [italic]is[/italic] extraordinary in FATAL ATTRACTION. She almost didn't get the part because no one thought she was sexy enough to play a 1-night stand. And by mainstream movie standards for big budget movies, she isn't. But that actually makes her better for the part, because you can sense her character's a woman who's been rejected, who hasn't had everything handed to her in life, who hasn't necessarily had it easy.
They wanted Isabelle Adjani for it, initially. Sooooooooooooooooo many actresses auditioned for that role!!
Interestingly, the cinematographer thought one thing that would make the character of Alex mysterious and interesting is if you rarely got a good look at her face straight on. The way it's shot, there's usually a hank of hair falling into her face, or she's in 3/4 profile, or there's lighting keeping half her face in shadow....techniques that keep you from cleanly seeing her full on. It's not done in every single shot, but that was the visual concept.
This also might have helped Close's appearance, because straight on, she's not a traditionally super attractive woman (in movie star terms)
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 27, 2018 10:13 AM |
refuses to look like a woman
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 27, 2018 10:18 AM |
I would classify her as a character actress. There's that strong New England/Kate Hepburn chiseled bone structure look about her that is too intimidating for most Americans.
r14 I would classify her as a character actress. There's that strong New England/Kate Hepburn chiseled bone structure look about her that is too intimidating for most Americans.
But in her youth, Katharine Hepburn was often a traditional leading lady, in addition to taking on more "character-like" leading roles.
Glenn Close made her film debut playing Robin Williams' mom.

Oh c'mon! During the Golden Age of Hollywood, Glenn Close would have been considered for the role of Miss Gulch in the Wizard of Oz....losing out to Margret Hamilton.
Close would have had a career as the poor man's Margorie Main.

Glenn Close is a legend. Maybe if she cozied up to big wigs like Harvey Weinstein, she would be further along in her career by now. Nevertheless, she is still a respected actress.
P.S. Meryl Streep isn't some timeless beauty either. And, who cares? What is this law that says actresses have to be beautiful? There are plenty fat, bloated, and ugly actors/directors/execs in Hollywood.

She's a wonderful actress who will work til she drops, and a nice person too. I think a bit too well adjusted and decent to hit the apex and stay there. What and who you have to do and all that. A person close to me had close ongoing contact with her in a service type position and she was a good egg to them when there was nothing in it for her. Wish her well.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 31, 2018 2:43 AM |
I'd put her interpretation of Patty Hewes on "Damages" well above anything Streep hacked out over the past 15 years.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 31, 2018 2:49 AM |
She’s a good technical actor. I find it hard to connect with her performances on an emotional level, though. There is an aloofness and cerebral quality to her acting that I find distancing. It works for certain roles like Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons where the character is a sociopath.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 31, 2018 2:54 AM |
R42. Agreed. 3 emmys . 3 Tonys. Six Oscar nominations. Still works. Most actors would sell their souls to the devil to have her acclaim. Op doesn’t know wtf he’s talking about.

She’s homely.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 31, 2018 3:25 AM |
Glenn is superb.Far and away a better actress than Meryl could ever hope to be. I remember every one of Glenns performances that I have seen,(I thought she was hysterical as Cruella) but the only one I remember of Meryl is Sophies choice, and that one only because of her atrocious accent.Thats not true, she was fabulous in Devil wears Prada, but that was mostly because of her outfits.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 31, 2018 3:29 AM |
Good point R49. Glenn, for instance, could never have pulled off Karen Silkwood, for instance. Can't think of a single role Close as done that Streep couldn't have done just as well.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 31, 2018 3:30 AM |
Lead roles in movies slowed down when she hit her 40s but her career never really stopped. She spent a few years doing Sunset Blvd. to great acclaim onstage and won an Emmy in the early 90s plus continued to get supporting roles in films. Then success on TV with Damages. She's never really had huge lulls.

by Anonymous | reply 59 | July 31, 2018 4:02 AM |
She works hard and is extremely focused on her career. That's how she has lasted as long as she has.
Her natural competition in the Odd Looking Leading Lady category is Streep and Streep is the better actor.
It's extraordinary that Close didn't fade away 20 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 31, 2018 4:03 AM |
She's a very nice person. (I've told this before but.......)
I used to work in a bookstore as a teen that she came to a lot. I used to get so nervous waiting on her. I was star stuck. I never even made eye contact. One day she kind of smiled and started a conversation about the book she was buying. Looking back she was clearly trying to draw me out. From then on I'd always chat with her and ask her questions about her films and she'd always chat so enthusiastically.

She had huge roles in the 80s. She was already in her upper 30s when she broke through with Fatal Attraction. She continued to work steadily in the 90s and after. The problem is that Hollywood doesn't write many leading roles for women 40 and over. They'll write roles, for 60-year-old men, but they'll only hire a woman in her 20s/30s for the supporting role as "the wife" of the old codger.

Aside from FATAL ATTRACTION (which is a very striking role, and does half the work for the performer), she's really only made a strong impression on me on TV, in THE SHIELD and DAMAGES.
Both times she played hard bitten women in power, whose jobs forced them to forgo vulnerability. She's good in that steely stuff. It presses a charge out of her that she usually lacks.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | August 7, 2018 6:50 AM |

She's very short, and it's hard to keep the weight off when you're stout. And she has a hard-jawed, handsome-woman look that's not right for romances.

I certainly acknowledge she's pulled off some very good performances in a long career. And for all I know she's a lovely person. There's just something about her I don't like. That clip from Damages when she tells the young lawyer to get out is not all that great or even realistic. Sorry, Glenn Lovers. I'm sure there are other fabulous clips.

Glenn was always an also-ran to other stars that audiences more fully embraced. She is also manly and has the personality of a WalMart greeter. She sometimes seems frivolous and girly but also very butch, like a Lez who watches Football in the basement. She made some good movies but always was a B-Lister. It’s easy for me to see why she never won an Oscar. Just not that well liked or admired, like Amy Adams.

She's had a successful career by any measure, but I say her big problem is she lacks warmth. The greats have some quality that you want to connect with them. With Close you just want to say I really respect your work and then move on. She's basically the 'you're likeable enough, Hillary' of acting.

Glenn Close has a reputation for being "difficult to work with".
Not that this makes Close a bad person, I'm just giving one example, I guess Close butted heads with Eric Roberts in a Wig - sorry!! - Julia Roberts in the ridiculous period piece Roberts tried and failed to pull off, "Mary Reilly".
Close also angered a lot of people in Hollywood when she successfully lobbied for the early parole of a woman who murdered her two year-old daughter into a women's rooms of a fast-food restaurant and slammed the child's head against the wall until the child died. I guess Close was either doing research or volunteering at women's penitentiary when she met this woman.

She hit a bit of a slump in the late eighties/early 90s as most woman her age do but she roared back with Sunset Blvd, one of her most acclaimed movies ever. Unlike some others -- Demi Moore, Sean Young, Melanie Griffith, Jessica Lange, Meg Ryan -- her career never collapsed. Look at their IMDbs and you see they all reached a point where there's nothing. Close has worked constantly in at least decent stuff, even if it never quite 'happened'.

She’s a steady working actress...she’s done quite well for herself and happily comfortable with growing older. No hair dyed, Botox or stretching of her skin. She looks great. I hope she does get the Oscar.

Sea Oak was actually pretty great and Glenn was excellent in it. I don't think it not being picked up for series had anything to do with the show's quality. Amazon released those three pilots and didn't pick any of them up, which is a shame and also kinda strange. That pilot with Bridget Everett and Loni Anderson was really great, too.

Can you describe the pleasures of the show?
I think I wasn't interested in seeing her play a drab (grandma?) character. Maybe because she's just a little bit drab, herself.
Maybe I sold the series short and should check it out.

Cinematic Parallels:
Glenn Close, Fatal Attraction (1987) / Glenn Close, The Wife (2018)

Glenn Close is a six-time Oscar nominee. With "The Wife," she deserves to finally win

Glenn is winning an Oscar and I got cut out of the Mama Mia sequel and am on that Desperate Housevies/Nicole Kidman show?
MAMIE!!!! Bring me the ax!!!!

Glenn will never win an Oscar. Her peers in the film community has been clear on how they feel about her, by repeatedly denying her in the past.

She's a good actress. She's no beauty, more of a "handsome" woman. There were a couple of years when she looked quite attractive. During "The Natural" and "Fatal Attraction" she was at her best.

R13 the academy has changed a lot since the 80s when she lost 5 times. She was never going to win in 2012 for Albert Nobbs but it shows she still commands respect that she got nominated over others like Tilda Swinton and Charlise Theron.
Had it been 2012 instead she could have won. That was an absolute shit lost except for the old French lady who got robbed.
R128 and R132 I agree, I thought the pilot was great and wanted more. It could only have a limited run given the premise but it still deserved a chance. Loved Glenn being so vulgar at the end. "Get your cock out!" lol

Sorry that was to R137
And I meant had she been up at the 2013 Oscars instead. Gosh, even Chastain came close that year.

She's lucky her family was rich enough to start her off with some plastic surgery, right out of the gate.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | August 29, 2018 8:50 AM |
She’s had a great career. To suggest otherwise is stupidity.

It’s not fair to let a man like Glenn run as best actress.

r49, For you and others who say it's hard to connect to her on an emotional level, watch her version of "South Pacific" (from 2001). She gives a very emotional, heartfelt performance that is impossible not to feel. And yes, I'm being serious!

r114, If Hollywood is shunning her for having a merciful heart, then more power to her! She's awesome and seems to have a very fun personality/great sense of humor.

I love Glenn Close - fantastic actress. And y'all have reminded me that I need to watch that Damages show.
Glenn Close has been married four times, each ending in divorce.
She needs to consider coming out of the closet.

Because that's where crap goes, OP.

She has a new movie coming out and the reviews are great.

Not really. It got a B in Entertainment Weekly for Boring.

My favorite Glenn Close film is Mrs. Doubtfire.

I have a theory that the "M" posters are really just Glenn superfans who want to make everyone resent Meryl.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | August 30, 2018 1:32 AM |
Glenn is not very likable and aloof. And yes, pretentious. She once said she has the memory to walk across the stage as any character she has played in the past. What an ass. It would just look like Glenn Close the man walking across a stage 30 times.

do wonders fer ya

So many posts in this thread say she needs to "come out of the closet". Yet, when this was suggested in a thread about her in the past, DL was amendment that she was straight, straight, straight!
Make up yer minds, people!

I hope Glenn wins for The Wife. It’s a bit weird in tone but she is great. And what about that project with Streep? They have to play period rivals - it would be delicious.

Because she is about to lose an Oscar to Lady fucking Gaga of all people.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | January 11, 2019 12:43 AM |
I hope to God she wins. She deserves it. I wasn't wild about The Wife, but she's great in it. I'm not sure it's her best work ever, but no one ever wins for true career-best work anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | January 11, 2019 1:42 AM |
Because she lost her 7th Oscar, dear!!
