The Murdoch Mysteries and Frankie Drake Mysteries

Any fans?

My mother and her fellow biddies of a certain age are major fans of these Canadian TV series. I binged Murdoch Mysteries with her after I went to my childhood home to help clean out her house after my father’s funeral. It stars the ridiculously pretty Yannick Bisson as a 1900s police detective. Every single historical figure who set foot on the North American continent wanders the rough the Toronto police station at some point.

It’s quite amusing and clever and comforting: Murdoch is staid and religious - but a brilliant scientist and inventor and not without a wry sense of humour! His wife is the city coroner, an ardent feminist and proponent of birth control - but is femme, gentle, from a blue blood family and a patroness of the arts! The boys at the station are a motley crew - but are are sweet as can be to the black, female doctor working as Murdoch’s wife’s assistant! Everyone is nonchalantly respectful of gays, cross-dressing runaways and burlesque performers.

Oh, and Mel from Eastenders had a cameo in the season opener!

I haven’t seen Frankie Drake, but it is cut off the same cloth, with lez icon Lauren Lee Smith as a Phryne Fisher type in the 20s.

I watched this series when it first showed up on OVATION. In the episodes I watched, he wasn't yet married.

My mom watches it too, think she said it's on ABC late night on the East Coast. Not sure if it's nightly or just on the weekends.

I liked the lesbian Doctor from L.A. Complex who left, she was cool. Love when Murdoch dumped abortion gf cause she had an abortion and he is a good catholic, so camp. Also, George is hot

The shows are crossing over now, as George appeared on Frankie Drake....and looked delicious

Was he a virgin when he got married?

by Anonymousreply 6July 23, 2018 7:39 PM

R6 YES

Did he dump Julia for having had an abortion or did she dump him when he discipovered she was infertile due to botched abortion?

Yannick is handsome, and has been starring in Lifetime and Hallmark movies lately. I'll bet a lot of people would watch virtually anything he is in.

by Anonymousreply 9July 24, 2018 5:05 PM

I love Hallmark and Lifetime!

But he’s the love interest of Candace Cameron-Bure’s crime fighting, small town librarian? Damn. Couldn’t they have roped in Alicia Witt or Lacey Chabert?

Pass.

R8 Dumped her for having had the abortion

I just read that he chose to leave the Aurora Teagarden series. The news blip said he wasn't in the last Hallmark series movie and is not planning on being in any future ones.

Yes, I'm a pretty big fan of The Murdoch Mysteries. Some of the inventions he makes are a little unbelievable to say the least, but I get the impression that they represent the social and cultural themes pretty accurately.

I'm a lesbian, so I liked the series best when the bisexual doctor Emily Grace, (she dated George), was in the morgue, with Murdoch's wife Julia helping her out sometimes. Doctor Grace had sass in a way that Julia does not, although I think the actress who plays Julia may be the lesbian one in real life. Her romantic chemistry with Yannick Bisson is awful.

I really enjoy the Murdoch Mysteries. As R13 mentions, a lot of his inventions are positively MacGyver-ish, but I still like the show.

[quote] Her romantic chemistry with Yannick Bisson is awful.

Maybe because Bisson looks younger than his age, she seems older than him as well (which probably would not be a problem if they had chemistry). She has always come across like an older sister.

I watched as far as Newflex and then Hulu would allow me. Netflex dropped it on their streaming and Hulu does not have the last handful of seasons.

I thought at some point he got over the abortion, but Julia balked because she did not think she was able to conceive (due to the abortion?) and give him the children he wanted. She then married, split with her husband, and eventually was suspected in some foul play. They went through many soap opera cliches to keep them apart.

He has a nice build and a nice butt, I am surprised there were not more gratuitous beefcake shots, esp in the early seasons.

*Sigh* I hope that OP isn’t another shut in, friendless fat frau clogging up Datalounge.

Frankie Drake will never come close to Phryne Fisher in terms of original plot, the realistic screen representation of a strong, independent, feminist character, beautiful, lavish and historical sets and the extravagant, period costumes. Frankie Drake looks cheap, ghastly, forced and inauthentic by comparison.

R17: the most convincing lesbian in The Murdoch Mysteries is Yannick Bisson. Your pic shows this, with her underlying girlishness, and not convincingly very butch.

by Anonymousreply 18July 30, 2018 3:28 AM

Sorry, not R17. Was intended for the OP.
