Figure Skating-Part XVIII

Continue discussion of Gracie Gold's coaching, Denis Ten's death and the upcoming season here.

Wow, the other thread already maxed ?

It will be interesting to see how Nathan is coping with school and sport.

Yeah, I was surprised, myself, given that there's the Hanyu thread and a Denis Ten thread, but went to visit the thread and it was closed at 600.

Nathan's an interesting case because I think he really did plan to medal at the Olympics and then retire. I think he planned on that far more than he planned on bombing at the Olympics, but also winning Worlds. The whole idea was to push as hard as possible and then relax on his laurels and go to college.

With the bombing at the Olympics and the gold at Worlds, however, he really can't retire without the fed screaming at him. With the way Yale works--no part-time students, I don't know how he'll do it. I can see him getting the skating time in, but all the other stuff--the choreography, the non-skating conditioning, the traveling. I guess he's timed the GP events, but I can't see him not phoning some of it in.

What would Nathan care if the Fed screamed at him? He'd be retired.

It appears Frank Carroll has officially retired.

Wow expected by still... he has been part of the sport since the 80s.

Longer than that... he coached Linda Fratianne in the 70s.

Too bad he didn't retire earlier. I can't help but wonder if Gracie might have herself an OGM now if she had gone to Brian & Tracy instead of Frank. I think Tracy in particular could have helped her get over what she saw as a major defeat at 2016 Worlds--Hanyu was in the same position and he has credited Tracy with helping him recover from that loss.

Yep. A different coach might have stalled that downward spiral. Carroll gave Gracie some polish and style, but he didn't help her much as a competitor.
