R549, I am the first one to decry the homophobia of not casting gay actors in straight roles because they believe the audience can only see them as gay.

But I will admit with Garrett it is difficult. He is so intense with his flamboyant, insatiable hungry bottom routine I couldn't take it seriously with him trying to play either a straight or dramatic role. And the Brent Corrigan thing didn't help. Watching the film, the problem wasn't he became the character like an actor should. The problem was you could see the actor in the character playing it with over eagerness. He LOVED that role and getting the chance to do the gay stuff, and suddenly makes you think his heart wasn't really in any other roles he's done by comparison.

It's true that Garrett has a hard time playing straight, unfortunately. With Brent, I thought his acting was actually good, but maybe because he didn't have to change all that much. And I genuinely thought that his character's twist in "dont hang up" was going to be that he was in love with Sulkin's character...the real twist was unbelievable. He seems like he genuinely enjoys acting and I feel for him.

I think the issue isn't that he's gay or openly gay - it's that he can't play straight. He was laughable in Hairspray and many other films/TV shows where he's had to play straight. I remember a lot of people joking about it at the time.

If you're going to be an actor, it's best to have range and be adaptable so you can play a lot of different roles. It's the same thing as having a really strong accent. You need to learn to lose it if you ever hope of playing characters outside of the place where you were raised.
