There are celebrities that are considered royalty and paparazzi won't touch them, because there's direct order from powerful moguls to avoid them, but mostly all this supposedly war between celebs and the photographers is as staged as their fake marriages. There's rarely any independent paparazzi out there, because a publication just won't buy your material if there's a ban on the subject, it's that simple. They're very protective of their assets, its all a huge business and a PR to everyone involved.

Mind you some celebs fake marriages for other reasons than hiding one's sexuality, they do it to enhance a brand, their name.

As I recall the paparazzi were truly aggressive in the 90s. They would say really insulting things to celebrities in the hopes of getting a shot of the star freaking out and maybe suing the star for assault. Post Princess Di it became a symbiotic relationship. The paparazzi hang out in places that celebrities go to for the purpose of having their picture taken. In same cases they make deals to have their picture taken at specific times and be left alone the rest of the time. This way the actor can be properly groomed for their photo and the paparazzi doesn't have to wait around hoping for a photo.

Well clearly there is still a big obstacle to coming out since there are still large numbers of actors in the closet.

Look at the hundreds of threads we have here about actors who are still inside.

R504 but the executives don't always know what the public wants or doesn't want. They assume people only want to watch white het men, so they only make movies and TV shows that star white het men. Then they're shocked when movies and TV shows that star anyone else do make money.

There are 2 main levels of closeted actors.

1) There are closeted actors who pretend to be totally straight and beard by appearing with fake girlfriends, etc. Sam Heughan has now entered this category. He wants to appear totally straight and is now going the full bearding route with the Twin Peaks actress.

2) Then there are closeted actors who don't beard and are willing to play gay roles and even appear in public with their boyfriends, but don't feel comfortable taking the final step. Julian Morris is an example of this. Although he recently played a gay role and travels everywhere with Landon Ross, he doesn't seem ready to say he is gay. This level is better than the full bearding level, but it's still not all the way out.

So there is clearly something holding back even the second level of closeted actors.

I think it all depends of the ambition of the actor. If you want to be a film star, be the main role in blockbusters and get all the cover of magazines you need to be perceived as straight, because agents and producers think it's totally needed. The truth is there are very few "film stars" and most of them are only in that role for a few years, so in my opinion it's not worth the prize.

A good gay actor (once he is stablished) don't have problem to get roles. Maybe they are character roles, but some of the best characters are secondary anyway. Right now there are a lot of openly gay actors working a lot, some of them getting awards. It will be more difficult? of course, but that doesn't change the fact that you can get good roles. And the problem is more on films (wich is a very conservative industry) than on tv, where the cast are a lot more diverse (on theatre being openly gay is not a problem).

Of course you are in the spotlight, so you need to be sure when you step out of the closet. Anyway, the glass closet is a good previous step, it makes way easier to coming out than if you live a lot of years of blatant lies.
