Boy Erased, "conversion" drama starring Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and DL fave Cherry Jones
by Anonymous | reply 227 | September 15, 2019 1:26 PM |
OP, why didn't you mention Xavier Dolan ????? It's the whole reason to see this film.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 17, 2018 3:49 PM |
I assume homophobe Russell Crowe is on the conversion side?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 17, 2018 3:51 PM |
Or Joel Edgerton R1, but who cares about those really, really tiny eyes?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 17, 2018 3:52 PM |
Looks sweet and heartbreaking. Hopefully, it raises some awareness about this horrific practice.
r1 Where was Dolan in that trailer? I must have missed him.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 17, 2018 3:52 PM |
Mmmm...
Lucas = shegets Tim o'Tay
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 17, 2018 3:54 PM |
That tagline "The truth cannot be converted" is great!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 17, 2018 3:56 PM |
"Written and directed by Joel Edgerton" came as a surprise to me; I had no idea he was multi-talented. I hope this does well despite his lack of experience in both of those fields.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 17, 2018 4:01 PM |
Is Joel Edgerton an Admirer of the Dong?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 17, 2018 4:04 PM |
Edgerton wrote and directed 2015's The Gift, quite competently.
I had a bf whose father was a minister. They didn't send him to conversion therapy because he didn't come out to them until he was out of the house, but they tried awfully hard to convince him to go voluntarily.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 17, 2018 4:04 PM |
Conversion is probably going to get red state financing and the conversion bans struck down in liberal states with the new conservative Supreme Court, so this is pretty timely.

Watch this get all the awards, Timo Tay fans are gonna cry.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 17, 2018 4:10 PM |
R11 I agree. Just based on trailers alone, this looks far superior to Beautiful Boy.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 17, 2018 4:12 PM |
r12 Yeah , Beautiful Boy looks like a Lifetime movie tbh. This trailer actually captures some emotions, the part where he said he doesn't hate his father for some reason almost put some tears in my eyes or when they beat a boy with the Bible is brutal too. I actually look forward to watch this.
Also I didn't know Troye Sivan was in this movie too.

This looks like a much better movie than Beautiful Boy. Not gonna cry.

Lucas Hedges is incredibly talented. It's a shame he's not better-looking, because that's what the masses respond to first and foremost.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 17, 2018 4:28 PM |
I think Steve Carell is a great human, but I don't like him in most of his dramatic acting. This movie looks better. There is another gay conversion movie coming up, but this looks superior.

Lucas Hedges is adorable. ISHC.
I'd love a movie that starred him and Shawn Mendes.

I wouldn't call him a hearthrob but Lucas is better than average looking. I'm sure he has a better body than Timothee too even though we've yet to see it.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 17, 2018 4:52 PM |
Will this film prompt Hedges to come out during the publicity tour?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 17, 2018 4:52 PM |

The scene with the chair was pretty profound as I had a similar experience back in 1994 when I had to go to reparative therapy (at least that's what it was called then) I was told by the 'leader' that I was gay because I either had a bad relationship with my father or that I was molested as a child. I knew at that moment that this was all a scam...which makes you pretty powerless you're 15. Even though I knew it was a scam they still over months sowed seeds of resentment that I held against both my parents, although I've sorted through a lot of that now. I still have major bias/issues with all religion though.

Did Crowe have to gain weight for the role? Here he is as a gay boy in The Sum of Us.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 17, 2018 5:15 PM |
Nicole Kidman's look is science fiction in this trailer. Could they not have cast a fucking American woman?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 17, 2018 5:17 PM |
Racist ^
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 17, 2018 5:18 PM |
Why cast an American woman when Edgerton and Crowe are Aussies?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 17, 2018 5:19 PM |
"Could they not have cast a fucking American woman?"
Many directors will not work with American actors due to their lack of professionalism.
For instance Australian Toni Collette is awesome as a suburban mom in "Hereditary". She creates a 3-dimensional character who is flawed, messy and totally credible.
I can't think of an American actress who could do that. They'd be too worried about lighting, hair, make-up and CGI-erased wrinkles.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 17, 2018 5:30 PM |
It is an amusing coincidence there are two big gay conversion movies coming out this year.
What's Lucas Hedges deal? I assume another straight guy taking the big gay roles.
Gay Actor Erased. Sums up the state of gay cinema.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 17, 2018 6:02 PM |
Nah, Lucas is gay but still in the closet. They also cast Troye Silvan. An openl gay singer/actor.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 17, 2018 6:06 PM |
Lucas Hedges was amazing in Lady Bird. The scene outside the restaurant where he breaks down, begging her not to tell people he's gay, made me cry.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 17, 2018 6:08 PM |
I was called back three times for the part, R32, but I told Joel to let Nickie have the part. She needs to exercise those acting muscles. Its part of our craft.

LMAO, you're writing this as a response to a critique of Nicole Kidman?! As if Nicole Kidman had anything natural leftover.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 17, 2018 6:22 PM |
Seriously, I can't believe someone said American actresses were too obsessed with how they look when we are talking someone as heavily nip/tucked as Kidman.

So you recommend it r46? I'll probably give it a read.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 17, 2018 6:58 PM |
R47 Yes, I would recommend it. I have to say based on the trailer, it looks like the screenplay is only slightly based on the book.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 17, 2018 7:00 PM |
Lucas Hedges is the new IT boy in Hollywood. He was in Manchester by the Sea, Ladybird, Three Billboards, and now will surely get an Oscar nom for Boy Erased. Talk about an impressive resume.
Troye Sivan will get a Best Song nomination for this, so he'll soon be known as Oscar-nominated Troye Sivan.
I see that Taylor Swift's boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, is in this, too.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 17, 2018 7:03 PM |
Hedges is also making his Broadway debut this fall in Kenneth Lonergan's The Waverly Gallery, after having worked with Lonergan previously on Manchester by the Sea.

Lucas Hedges has the best agent in Hollywood, because he is not good looking at all. Nor does he look like a teen. He looks 25 at minimum
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 17, 2018 7:47 PM |

But he can act. He doesn't get hired to be a pretty face, he gets hired for roles that require real acting.

Wasn't James Franco writing and directing a movie about a successful conversion to show the other side of this?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | July 17, 2018 8:13 PM |
Franco did the "I am Michael" movie about a Michael Glatze who decided to live a straight life r54, though I am not sure anyone watched it.

R53 I can't see any reason it wouldn't be possible.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 17, 2018 8:15 PM |

Hedges has always had a leg up thanks to his director dad. He’s certainly not a “come out of nowhere” type. He reminds me more of Jesse Plemmons than the It Boy actors closer to his age.
Not impressed by the trailer. Kinda bland and oddly unemotional. Not seeing Crowe or Kidman as Arkansan evangelicals.

Lucas Hedges also played gay in the mini-series "The Slap". His character attempted suicide not once, but twice (first time was only mentioned and not shown).
by Anonymous | reply 67 | July 18, 2018 12:47 AM |
I had really high hopes for the novel this film is based on. It was really disappointing. I couldn't understand the excitement. Hopefully the movie will be better. Joel Edgerton was fantastic in "The Gift" (which he wrote and directed) so this could be good.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | July 18, 2018 2:48 AM |
r61 Lucas could've had "a leg" but that doesn't take the fact that he's talented.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | July 18, 2018 2:53 AM |
The film is based on a memoir, not a novel. And he should sue for allowing that fugly actor to play him, because the author is quite hot.

Lucas is cute, and a good actor. Better than Timothée.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | July 18, 2018 6:23 AM |
Crowe and Kidman? Must be another gay tragedy made by straights for straights. No gay sex or male nudity. That would shock the sexually confident heterosexuals into not buying tickets.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | July 18, 2018 6:26 AM |
Nicole has done some great work recently. I loved her in Lion and some think her work in Big Little Lies is the best she has ever done
I used to be the biggest Crowe fan but the last film I saw him in Nice Guys had him foo action scenes fat.

I wasn't a big fan of The Gift. And, the trailer looks a bit iffy. Why would a straight man want to write/direct a gay conversion therapy movie anyway? I'll wait to see what the critics have to say about it.

I'm aware that Lucas' father is a director and screenwriter, advantages that would diminish his record in my eyes except for the fact that he's an enormously talented young man. I've liked him in everything I've seen him in so far, and I'm looking forward to Boy Erased. It already seems to be the focus of some back-and-forth discussion on the legitimacy of conversion therapy on cultural and political forums. As for Chalamet whose name seems to come up in DL threads referencing Hedges, you realize it's not an either-or situation? Two gifted young academy award nominated performers can actually co-exist, and one can actually like them both whether you prefer Boy Erased or Beautiful Boy. Both look interesting; the results should be significant come awards season.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | July 18, 2018 12:27 PM |
They have a lot of things in common, they have a pretty solid career even at such young age, they are not gossip material (at least not mainstream gossip material) and they are not the conventional good looking main actor that Hollywood's seem to promote.
And having contacts on the industry makes things way easier but in the end you have talent (and luck) or you don't. Lucas contacts didn't earn his Oscar nomination, the same way Ben Platt's contacts didn't earn him his tony. And actors career is more a marathon than a sprint

A lot of gay people complain about LGBT movies made by straight people but where are the gay writers, directors, etc? Until they don't step up their game is good that we at least have some gay movies at all.
I'd much rather watch a good movie made by straights if this kind of production full of tired cliches and stereotypes is the best gays can come up with given the chance:
by Anonymous | reply 92 | July 18, 2018 1:49 PM |

R93: I think God's own country is a totally different kind of film, it's not the type of movie most A list (or B list) hollywood actors were ready to do. It's way riskier than CMBYN. The author of the novel is gay, and he had a lot of trouble to make his last novel published because it's about homosexuality on soccer, and most publishers thought women won't be interested in that kind of story (the problem here was the soccer not the homosexuality). Fortunately A natural was published and received great reviews

Really looking forward to seeing this not only because of the story (exposing the fraud that's called "conversion therapy"), but also because of Lucas Hedges. This young man seems to have made the most of his connections in the business, which would be off-putting but for the fact that he has shown genuine talent. He was excellent in both Manchester By the Sea and Ladybird, and Boy Erased would be his first actual leading role, quite a test for a young actor. It doesn't matter that your father is a screenwriter and director or how elaborate the star-maker machinery behind you is if audiences don't find your performances compelling or engaging enough to attract and hold their interest and make them want to find out more and follow your progress (i.e, see a certain "Chalamet"). Hedges seems to inspire admiration as a budding personality whose backround in the business shouldn't be held against him, or hatred as an undeserving, bland lightweight coasting on his advantages. As I am of the former point of view, I hope this will be a critical and popular success worthy of at least a best actor nomination for him.

Why is it called “Boy Erased”? Conversion therapy doesn’t change your biological sex. They should have named it “Love Erased”, or something like that.
The boy isn’t being erased, his sexuality is.

That's cool that he even talked about it at all. He sounds like an unsure young man, so maybe in a couple of years he'll feel comfortable definitively stating his sexuality.

Hedges envies people who can speak about such things with more certainty.“People expect you as an actor to have a voice that’s set in some way, and that’s really not what I am,” he says. “I’m very much within the conflict and confusion of my own life, still, and I definitely feel a pressure to step up in a way. I prefer to step up in my art, and I don’t entirely know how to in my life.”
That's fair. I try really hard to see where people are coming from but I still sometimes find it hard to accept people in their twenties and older not knowing where their sexuality lies . Maybe they aren't ready to tell others but by now I would think he knows that he's gay or bi. He knows what gets him hard.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | September 5, 2018 3:09 PM |
He knows he’s gay. C’mon, guys. It’s crystal clear. But he played the “ fluid” card. Good for him otherwise no more projects and I want him to succeed.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | September 5, 2018 4:46 PM |
It sounds more like he is pretty much straight but playing up his queerness because he is starring in a Oscar bait gay movie...
I mean his quote is basically claiming he falls way closer to the straight side.

R135 And I’m Maria Theresa. He was really sly, I give him that. But, you don’t have to be a genius to see he’s more rainbow than ever. Anyway....Personally I’m more interested in seeing him in Ben is Back than BE.

Just saying, his "not 100.0% straight but definitely NOT gay or bisexual so you better not call me that" isn't a bust out the champagne moment for me. But to each his own.
I think he is most turned on by possible award love right now.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | September 5, 2018 5:08 PM |
Exactly. He has 3 movies out this year. The nomination is on its way. Is there a thread for Ben is Back?
by Anonymous | reply 138 | September 5, 2018 5:12 PM |
I thought he came across as very honest in the interview, not playing games. It sounds like he might be bi discordant, with his romantic attractions predominately directed towards men and his base sexual attraction towards women.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | September 5, 2018 5:42 PM |
What I got from the previous review, in case you didn't read it-
[quote] (Hedges') Charlie Brown-like face
[quote] (Taylor Swift's boyfriend's part in the film) Its lone sex scene features a horrific encounter with a college crush (Joe Alwyn), who brutally rapes Jared....
by Anonymous | reply 140 | September 5, 2018 5:49 PM |
The way I see it, he's a gay guy who doesn't want to burn bridges by admitting he's gay, so he leaves all options open and emphasises his heterosexual attractions because his agent might advise him to beard in the future.
At least he hasn't said he's straight. Not that anyone at all would believe THAT.

A round of applause for R141. Finally someone who gets it.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | September 5, 2018 5:55 PM |
He grew up in the industry with his director dad, so he’s more savvy than he plays with his “unsure” kid schtick.
The Boy Erased reviews are pretty lukewarm though, with Kidman and Crowe getting more notice than Hedges (I think the Variety review gave him all of one sentence) so a nomination is seeming less and less likely.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | September 5, 2018 9:18 PM |
I think he has a better shot with Ben is Back than Boy Erased. Those clips from the trailer were really good. And the Supporting category this is year is the....void.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | September 5, 2018 9:29 PM |
I’d say Supporting is pretty tight r144. Chalamet and Elliot are topping most of the early surveys with Richard E Grant third, and guys like Daniel Kaluya, Kyle Chandler, Michael B Jordan, Adam Driver and even Sam Rockwell in the mix.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | September 5, 2018 9:35 PM |
R135 and R137 Exactly. It reeks of cutting the noose before someone hangs him a la ; "Cis straight white actor steals queer role!" Now all the SJW's can celebrate his part and not drag him, because he 'exists' on the spectrum. Never mind he is saying never call him gay, or even bisexual. YAWN. And if it is like R141, then thats kind of worse to me. Just dont say anything. Dont shit on gay people until you are ready to be completely upfront. Encourages fluidity, change in orientation etc is NEGATIVE to us, even more so when you are starring in a conversion therapy movie.

The movie felt too mild to me. Edgerton wants to be even handed and depict the parents and counsellors as misguided people doing what they think is the right thing, rather than villains... but then the film doesn’t have much bite.
I was expecting the conversion therapy to be much harsher than it was. It’s wrongheaded and ridiculous, and the experience would still be upsetting to a young gay person, but he isn’t locked up at night, he’s not really treated badly (within the context), he isn’t given shock treatments or anything like that... i expected something scarier, though maybe I’m too far removed from a kid’s perspective.
Lucas is good in it, though the movie kind of downplays the character’s sexuality. If he gets any Oscar recognition it will be for Ben Is Back, it’s a showier role. Russell looks godawful, though in his defence he’s trying to look like the real dad.

Just went to screening for SAG Nominating Committee. Nicole Kidman did a Q&A afterward.
I thought it was a well acted but rudimentary film better suited for the small screen. Hedges is great, Crowe is very good and Kidman is extremely touching as the mother. Kidman claimed afterward she’d never heard of gay conversion therapy before reading the book upon which the script is based. I found that to be a tad unbelievable.

by Anonymous | reply 192 | October 30, 2018 9:33 PM |
If anyone is interested in a really good portrayal of the inner turmoil of closeted gay teenagers then American Crime series 2 is very good. Unfortunately the main plot revolves around the rape of one of them so it is pretty dark, but both young actors are very good. Unlike in some dramas they are not santised - they're messy and lonely and scared, but also sexual and angry and experimenting, but most of all they feel very real as characters. I read a review that said that 'Boy Erased' had something missing - maybe it's that messiness and complexity?
The main actor, Connor Jessup is very very good, everything about the way he speaks conveys what he's not saying, the pressure to keep everything inside. Felicity Huffman is also great as a headmistress trying to protect the reputation of her private school.

by Anonymous | reply 215 | November 11, 2018 1:44 AM |
Most gay movies with mainstream stars and Oscar aspirations unforuntately.
But not all and as someone in the LGBT community, I don't really want to sit through a couple of hours of straight people patting themselves on the back about how down they are with "the gays."
I just saw the Freddie Mercury movie and although I appreciate Rami Malek's performance, and I loved seeing "Jamie" from the UK Shameless play a sexy cater waiter. I didn't really appreciate the whole "straight Freddie good/gay Freddie bad" message from the straight bandmates who authorized the movie.
If anyone remembers the movie Jeffrey, where they had that funny little opening about how straight audiences reacted to gay men kissing? The implication was that straight women would think it was adorable and straight men would be disgusted. Except in our audience, all the straight people were disgusted.
While watching Bohemian Rhapsody, nobody reacted to men kissing. It was normal to the audience.
Time for Hollywood to catch the fuck up with audiences at the very least.

by Anonymous | reply 218 | November 11, 2018 12:58 PM |
I just saw the movie tonight and was surprised that it was rated R. As others stated it is very much a gay movie made for straights, but by far the most important message it is portraying is the harm that conversion therapy does to young people, so it would have been important to allow an audience of PG13 and above to see it.
I thought when I got my ticket that perhaps there would be a somewhat explicit sex scene, but as others have stated it is pretty much sexless. There is a rape scene, but it is neither that violent nor explicit. The movie Speak from 2004 was about rape and what was shown was comparable and only had a PG13 rating. According to IMDB there are four “Fucks” in it, which I know from reading about The Hate You Give, is three to many to get a PG13 rating, though THUG did lobby successfully to get two “Fucks” and keep its PG13 status. If that was the reason for the R, I wish they would have reduced them to reach a larger audience.
According to IMDB it is certified for ages 11 in Sweden, 12 in Germany, 14A in Canada, 15 in UK and MA 15 in Australia. All more reasonable that R here in the USA. I looked to see what this years other gay conversion therapy film, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, was rated, and it looks like they chose not to as it is listed as NR. Was that a choice because it too was given an R and they wanted it to reach young people so they skipped it? Is that what hurt it’s chances at the box office, as I understand it many chains won’t show an unrated movie. Is it partly because of homophobia that these films have an R rating, the gay content automatically pushing it into an R category?
With Lucas Hedges and Troye Sivan it has the potential to pull in young gay teens who this movie could impact in a positive way, much the way Love, Simon, a PG13 movie, did earlier this year. What gives?
by Anonymous | reply 219 | November 19, 2018 12:59 AM |
R35 seems you're talking out of your ass and grasping at straws. You provided no reason/example as to why or how American actresses are unprofessional, which is a generalization. Vera Fermiga could've done Toni Collette's part. She can get down and dirty. As others have pointed out, Nicole Kidman is high-maintenance.
The reason why Kidman was hired was because Joel Edgerton (an Aussie) wrote, directed and produced the film. The Aussies look out for each other, as Cate Blanchett once said, since they seem to be a minority in Hollywood, when compared to the Brits and Canadians. When Blanchett won she even mentioned in her speech about Hollywood needing to hire more Aussie talent as if it's the US film industry's responsibility.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | November 19, 2018 1:21 AM |
R219 here, just confirmed with the article below that Miseducation of Cameron Post avoided MPAA ratings to be able to reach queer youth without being censored for content. There’s mention that the film Because I’m a Cheerleader originally got a NC17 rating despite no nudity and less sexual content then American Pie the same year. They edited down to get a R rating, but again it sounds like homophobia was part of the issue. They concede that there might be problems getting it into theaters, but felt the risk was worth it. Really makes me wish Boy Erased had lobbied hard for PG13, if THUG could have done it this year maybe they could have too.

I was snowed in last March and spent the weekend watching Oscar nominated films and then the telecast. I didn't realize this guy was in both 'ladybird' and '3 billboards'until I was halfway through the second film. Furthermore, later that week when I was headed back east I swear I saw him at the SF airport. I looked at him with what must have been a 'hey aren't you that guy' look on my face because he made eye contact, smiled and nodded. My traveling partner said to me 'hey, isn't that the guy from ladybird?'. I don't know for sure but that's my brush with greatness.

I saw the film a couple of days ago, and even though the film is understated, it was still discomforting, which was probably the intention. The film suggests that the "therapy" gets worse as the process continues, but the film only shows the initial stages of the conversion process, which was more than enough to show its true nature. If the film had gone over the top, it would be less believable, which would defeat its intentions. Instead, it leaves that to the viewer's imagination.
Hedges, Kidman and Crowe were all believable in their roles. Kidman was much more real than I expected. The movie is overall well done.
