Boy Erased, "conversion" drama starring Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and DL fave Cherry Jones
|by Anonymous||reply 226||Last Saturday at 8:58 AM|
OP, why didn't you mention Xavier Dolan ????? It's the whole reason to see this film.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||07/17/2018|
I assume homophobe Russell Crowe is on the conversion side?
|by Anonymous||reply 2||07/17/2018|
Or Joel Edgerton R1, but who cares about those really, really tiny eyes?
|by Anonymous||reply 3||07/17/2018|
Looks sweet and heartbreaking. Hopefully, it raises some awareness about this horrific practice.
r1 Where was Dolan in that trailer? I must have missed him.
|by Anonymous||reply 4||07/17/2018|
Lucas = shegets Tim o'Tay
|by Anonymous||reply 5||07/17/2018|
That tagline "The truth cannot be converted" is great!
|by Anonymous||reply 6||07/17/2018|
"Written and directed by Joel Edgerton" came as a surprise to me; I had no idea he was multi-talented. I hope this does well despite his lack of experience in both of those fields.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||07/17/2018|
Is Joel Edgerton an Admirer of the Dong?
|by Anonymous||reply 8||07/17/2018|
Edgerton wrote and directed 2015's The Gift, quite competently.
I had a bf whose father was a minister. They didn't send him to conversion therapy because he didn't come out to them until he was out of the house, but they tried awfully hard to convince him to go voluntarily.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||07/17/2018|
Conversion is probably going to get red state financing and the conversion bans struck down in liberal states with the new conservative Supreme Court, so this is pretty timely.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||07/17/2018|
Watch this get all the awards, Timo Tay fans are gonna cry.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||07/17/2018|
R11 I agree. Just based on trailers alone, this looks far superior to Beautiful Boy.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||07/17/2018|
r12 Yeah , Beautiful Boy looks like a Lifetime movie tbh. This trailer actually captures some emotions, the part where he said he doesn't hate his father for some reason almost put some tears in my eyes or when they beat a boy with the Bible is brutal too. I actually look forward to watch this.
Also I didn't know Troye Sivan was in this movie too.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||07/17/2018|
[quote]Timo Tay fans are gonna cry.
This looks like a much better movie than Beautiful Boy. Not gonna cry.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||07/17/2018|
Lucas Hedges is incredibly talented. It's a shame he's not better-looking, because that's what the masses respond to first and foremost.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||07/17/2018|
I think Steve Carell is a great human, but I don't like him in most of his dramatic acting. This movie looks better. There is another gay conversion movie coming up, but this looks superior.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||07/17/2018|
[quote]There is another gay conversion movie coming up
With a lesbian, right?
|by Anonymous||reply 17||07/17/2018|
Yeah. "The Miseducation of Cameron Post" starring Chloë Grace Moretz.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||07/17/2018|
R15 A lot of great, critically acclaimed, beloved actors are not specially good looking. And again, a lot of good looking actors truly deserve the praise and following they have.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||07/17/2018|
Lucas Hedges is adorable. ISHC.
I'd love a movie that starred him and Shawn Mendes.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||07/17/2018|
I see Timothee, Saoirse and Lucas as the millennial golden trio of Hollywood. They even look like HP characters.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||07/17/2018|
I wouldn't call him a hearthrob but Lucas is better than average looking. I'm sure he has a better body than Timothee too even though we've yet to see it.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||07/17/2018|
Will this film prompt Hedges to come out during the publicity tour?
|by Anonymous||reply 23||07/17/2018|
R23 If he does he secures a nomination. Maybe finally takes his boyfriend to the Oscars.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||07/17/2018|
Lucas Hedges caught shirtless on the set of Boy Erased
|by Anonymous||reply 25||07/17/2018|
[quote]They even look like HP characters.
Like what, r21?
|by Anonymous||reply 26||07/17/2018|
r21 I wish their annoying fans didn't make me resent Chalamet so bad. But the endless threads here and he whole 'It boy', 'next Leo', etc. are so tiring. And they're all over social media.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||07/17/2018|
*his annoying fans
|by Anonymous||reply 28||07/17/2018|
R27 Poor guy. Gotta be ugly for a few movies and it will quiet down.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||07/17/2018|
The scene with the chair was pretty profound as I had a similar experience back in 1994 when I had to go to reparative therapy (at least that's what it was called then) I was told by the 'leader' that I was gay because I either had a bad relationship with my father or that I was molested as a child. I knew at that moment that this was all a scam...which makes you pretty powerless you're 15. Even though I knew it was a scam they still over months sowed seeds of resentment that I held against both my parents, although I've sorted through a lot of that now. I still have major bias/issues with all religion though.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||07/17/2018|
Did Crowe have to gain weight for the role? Here he is as a gay boy in The Sum of Us.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||07/17/2018|
Nicole Kidman's look is science fiction in this trailer. Could they not have cast a fucking American woman?
|by Anonymous||reply 32||07/17/2018|
|by Anonymous||reply 33||07/17/2018|
Why cast an American woman when Edgerton and Crowe are Aussies?
|by Anonymous||reply 34||07/17/2018|
"Could they not have cast a fucking American woman?"
Many directors will not work with American actors due to their lack of professionalism.
For instance Australian Toni Collette is awesome as a suburban mom in "Hereditary". She creates a 3-dimensional character who is flawed, messy and totally credible.
I can't think of an American actress who could do that. They'd be too worried about lighting, hair, make-up and CGI-erased wrinkles.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||07/17/2018|
It is an amusing coincidence there are two big gay conversion movies coming out this year.
What's Lucas Hedges deal? I assume another straight guy taking the big gay roles.
Gay Actor Erased. Sums up the state of gay cinema.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||07/17/2018|
Nah, Lucas is gay but still in the closet. They also cast Troye Silvan. An openl gay singer/actor.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||07/17/2018|
Lucas Hedges was amazing in Lady Bird. The scene outside the restaurant where he breaks down, begging her not to tell people he's gay, made me cry.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||07/17/2018|
I was called back three times for the part, R32, but I told Joel to let Nickie have the part. She needs to exercise those acting muscles. Its part of our craft.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||07/17/2018|
Oscars for everyone.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||07/17/2018|
[quote]I can't think of an American actress who could do that. They'd be too worried about lighting, hair, make-up and CGI-erased wrinkles.
LMAO, you're writing this as a response to a critique of Nicole Kidman?! As if Nicole Kidman had anything natural leftover.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||07/17/2018|
Seriously, I can't believe someone said American actresses were too obsessed with how they look when we are talking someone as heavily nip/tucked as Kidman.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||07/17/2018|
Nicole Kidman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||07/17/2018|
Converted to what, Judaism? Episcopalian?
|by Anonymous||reply 44||07/17/2018|
I wanted to see this until I saw Troye. No thanks. Can't stand the guy.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||07/17/2018|
I read the book, so I'm looking forward to this.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||07/17/2018|
So you recommend it r46? I'll probably give it a read.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||07/17/2018|
R47 Yes, I would recommend it. I have to say based on the trailer, it looks like the screenplay is only slightly based on the book.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||07/17/2018|
Lucas Hedges is the new IT boy in Hollywood. He was in Manchester by the Sea, Ladybird, Three Billboards, and now will surely get an Oscar nom for Boy Erased. Talk about an impressive resume.
Troye Sivan will get a Best Song nomination for this, so he'll soon be known as Oscar-nominated Troye Sivan.
I see that Taylor Swift's boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, is in this, too.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||07/17/2018|
Hedges is also making his Broadway debut this fall in Kenneth Lonergan's The Waverly Gallery, after having worked with Lonergan previously on Manchester by the Sea.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||07/17/2018|
Lucas Hedges has the best agent in Hollywood, because he is not good looking at all. Nor does he look like a teen. He looks 25 at minimum
|by Anonymous||reply 51||07/17/2018|
[quote]because he is not good looking at all.
But he can act. He doesn't get hired to be a pretty face, he gets hired for roles that require real acting.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||07/17/2018|
Don't let anyone tell you nobody can change gay to straight. It's possible
|by Anonymous||reply 53||07/17/2018|
Wasn't James Franco writing and directing a movie about a successful conversion to show the other side of this?
|by Anonymous||reply 54||07/17/2018|
Franco did the "I am Michael" movie about a Michael Glatze who decided to live a straight life r54, though I am not sure anyone watched it.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||07/17/2018|
R53 I can't see any reason it wouldn't be possible.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||07/17/2018|
Based on the trailer, I would give Russell Crowe's left eye an Academy Award©️ Nomination for its rapid twitching when his son says, "I think about men."
|by Anonymous||reply 57||07/17/2018|
R51: I heard exactly the same about Ben Platt, but they are actors not models and it's good from time to time that a good actor take the role instead of an insipid beauty
|by Anonymous||reply 58||07/17/2018|
Lucas is 21 r52
Maybe you’d better get your eyes checked for cataracts
|by Anonymous||reply 59||07/17/2018|
[quote]Could they not have cast a fucking American woman?
In a film about a gay man that is written, directed and acted almost exclusively by straight people? Fuck that.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||07/17/2018|
[quote]Lucas Hedges has the best agent in Hollywood, because he is not good looking at all. Nor does he look like a teen. He looks 25 at minimum
Hedges has always had a leg up thanks to his director dad. He’s certainly not a “come out of nowhere” type. He reminds me more of Jesse Plemmons than the It Boy actors closer to his age.
Not impressed by the trailer. Kinda bland and oddly unemotional. Not seeing Crowe or Kidman as Arkansan evangelicals.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||07/17/2018|
[quote]Could they not have cast a fucking American woman?
This is the weirdest complaint yet and reeks of Trump's "America First" bullshit.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||07/17/2018|
Depressing. A needed message, but no thanks.
I can't look at Crowe or Kidman without them seeming to declare, "I'm ACTing!!"
|by Anonymous||reply 63||07/17/2018|
Kidman is American. She was raised in Australia but was born in Hawaii.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||07/17/2018|
[quote]Seriously, I can't believe someone said American actresses were too obsessed with how they look when we are talking someone as heavily nip/tucked as Kidman.
Of course while we are mocking Nicole’s processed appearance, we will also be mocking Russell for letting himself get old and fat...
|by Anonymous||reply 65||07/17/2018|
Get old-LOOKING I mean.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||07/17/2018|
Lucas Hedges also played gay in the mini-series "The Slap". His character attempted suicide not once, but twice (first time was only mentioned and not shown).
|by Anonymous||reply 67||07/17/2018|
I had really high hopes for the novel this film is based on. It was really disappointing. I couldn't understand the excitement. Hopefully the movie will be better. Joel Edgerton was fantastic in "The Gift" (which he wrote and directed) so this could be good.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||07/17/2018|
r61 Lucas could've had "a leg" but that doesn't take the fact that he's talented.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||07/17/2018|
The film is based on a memoir, not a novel. And he should sue for allowing that fugly actor to play him, because the author is quite hot.
|by Anonymous||reply 70||07/17/2018|
Is there nudity?
|by Anonymous||reply 71||07/17/2018|
|by Anonymous||reply 72||07/17/2018|
Here's the real life guy that Hedges is playing in the film.
|by Anonymous||reply 73||07/17/2018|
I would like an Oscar nomination please.
|by Anonymous||reply 74||07/17/2018|
I hope there is a scene where the kid tries on Nicole's wig.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||07/17/2018|
Did Xavier butch it up for the movie ?? He looked very masc in the trailer.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||07/17/2018|
I like Lucas. He's cute.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||07/17/2018|
r76 Where is he? I didn't even recognize him.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||07/17/2018|
Is the lead played by a heterosexual?
|by Anonymous||reply 79||07/17/2018|
Lucas is cute, and a good actor. Better than Timothée.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||07/17/2018|
Crowe and Kidman? Must be another gay tragedy made by straights for straights. No gay sex or male nudity. That would shock the sexually confident heterosexuals into not buying tickets.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||07/17/2018|
Nicole has done some great work recently. I loved her in Lion and some think her work in Big Little Lies is the best she has ever done
I used to be the biggest Crowe fan but the last film I saw him in Nice Guys had him foo action scenes fat.
What is wrong with you bitches? Lucas is hot and I want to have sex with him. Timmy not so much. I loved him in CMBYN but I’m not attracted to him.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||07/17/2018|
R79 Hedges, heterosexual? Rofl
|by Anonymous||reply 83||07/17/2018|
I wasn't a big fan of The Gift. And, the trailer looks a bit iffy. Why would a straight man want to write/direct a gay conversion therapy movie anyway? I'll wait to see what the critics have to say about it.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||07/18/2018|
P.S. I also wasn't impressed with the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer. Here's hoping that both films are better than their trailers.
|by Anonymous||reply 85||07/18/2018|
Hopefully they'll make "Boy Erased II" soon, about transing.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||07/18/2018|
The Gift was bad. Effective but bad. Not sure I trust Edgerton to handle this subject matter any better, especially considering a particular scene.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||07/18/2018|
R81: If you want sex and male nudity there are a lot of porn waiting for you
|by Anonymous||reply 88||07/18/2018|
I'm aware that Lucas' father is a director and screenwriter, advantages that would diminish his record in my eyes except for the fact that he's an enormously talented young man. I've liked him in everything I've seen him in so far, and I'm looking forward to Boy Erased. It already seems to be the focus of some back-and-forth discussion on the legitimacy of conversion therapy on cultural and political forums. As for Chalamet whose name seems to come up in DL threads referencing Hedges, you realize it's not an either-or situation? Two gifted young academy award nominated performers can actually co-exist, and one can actually like them both whether you prefer Boy Erased or Beautiful Boy. Both look interesting; the results should be significant come awards season.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||07/18/2018|
They have a lot of things in common, they have a pretty solid career even at such young age, they are not gossip material (at least not mainstream gossip material) and they are not the conventional good looking main actor that Hollywood's seem to promote.
And having contacts on the industry makes things way easier but in the end you have talent (and luck) or you don't. Lucas contacts didn't earn his Oscar nomination, the same way Ben Platt's contacts didn't earn him his tony. And actors career is more a marathon than a sprint
|by Anonymous||reply 90||07/18/2018|
Good trailer. Reminds me of "Latter Days" with the Mormon boy and his family.
|by Anonymous||reply 91||07/18/2018|
A lot of gay people complain about LGBT movies made by straight people but where are the gay writers, directors, etc? Until they don't step up their game is good that we at least have some gay movies at all.
I'd much rather watch a good movie made by straights if this kind of production full of tired cliches and stereotypes is the best gays can come up with given the chance:
|by Anonymous||reply 92||07/18/2018|
Uh, to make this easy you realize last years award winning films "Call Me By Your Name" and "God's Own Country" were both written and directed by gay men don't you r92?
(Though yes, they starred straight actors)
|by Anonymous||reply 93||07/18/2018|
R92> That episode is funny though! :)
|by Anonymous||reply 94||07/18/2018|
Yes, I know. My answer was mostly directed to people like r81
|by Anonymous||reply 95||07/18/2018|
Kidman does not do warm and loving mother well.
She was fine in The Others as a child killing mother. She'd be better at playing the mother in a remake of Ordinary People.
|by Anonymous||reply 96||07/18/2018|
Kidman has made a career out of playing cold people.
|by Anonymous||reply 97||07/18/2018|
I really hope for Lucas to get in the BA category and get that fucking Oscar nod. He deserves it.
|by Anonymous||reply 98||07/18/2018|
Lucas Hedges already has an oscar nomination from "Manchester by the Sea" r98, not like the academy has ignored him.
|by Anonymous||reply 99||07/18/2018|
R99 I know, but not in the BA category.
|by Anonymous||reply 100||07/18/2018|
He has 3 movies out this year: Boy Erased, Ben is Back ( very similar to BB) and Mid ‘90s. So he’ll be all over the place this fall. The Academy better take notice.
|by Anonymous||reply 101||07/18/2018|
[quote]Lucas Hedges is incredibly talented. It's a shame he's not better-looking, because that's what the masses respond to first and foremost.
I think he looks fine. Hedges is like the new Leo DiCaprio.
|by Anonymous||reply 102||07/18/2018|
[quote]Hedges is like the new Leo DiCaprio.
Bite your tongue. Break your typing fingers.
|by Anonymous||reply 103||07/18/2018|
r103 AWW you triggered the french mouse fangirls r102
|by Anonymous||reply 104||07/18/2018|
Nobody will be the new Leo Dicaprio. There were different times back then and that era is done. He can become a good actor, though with some interesting movies on his curriculum.
|by Anonymous||reply 105||07/18/2018|
R104, I am a "French mouse fangirl," too.
|by Anonymous||reply 106||07/18/2018|
R82 Kidman has really had a renaissance the last few years. She was fantastic in Lion and I would definitely argue that Big Little Lies was the best performance of her career. Kidman channeled her relationship with Cruise for that haunting portrayal.
|by Anonymous||reply 107||07/18/2018|
r106 Yeah that's why I was saying r102 triggered you....
|by Anonymous||reply 108||07/18/2018|
|by Anonymous||reply 109||07/18/2018|
R93: I think God's own country is a totally different kind of film, it's not the type of movie most A list (or B list) hollywood actors were ready to do. It's way riskier than CMBYN. The author of the novel is gay, and he had a lot of trouble to make his last novel published because it's about homosexuality on soccer, and most publishers thought women won't be interested in that kind of story (the problem here was the soccer not the homosexuality). Fortunately A natural was published and received great reviews
|by Anonymous||reply 110||07/18/2018|
My friend saw an unfinished cut of this and said it's going to get a slew of nominations. He said it will dominate the acting categories.
|by Anonymous||reply 111||07/18/2018|
Interesting r111. Other test screening reports haven’t been nearly as positive and I know they did quite a few reshoots after those early screenings.
|by Anonymous||reply 112||07/18/2018|
Next gay pic for Lucas: a Jeffrey Dahmer biopic.
|by Anonymous||reply 113||07/18/2018|
No thread is complete without the self-loathing gay man. R92
No R113, we just got that last year with the much hotter Ross Lynch.
|by Anonymous||reply 114||07/18/2018|
Since when is Crowe homophobic? He's never been to my knowldge. Quite the contrary.
|by Anonymous||reply 115||07/18/2018|
So do we think we'll all rally behind this one if it does indeed get a slew of nominations? Or will there be yet another civil war over the movie not being explicit or black or whatever else enough?
Maybe we'll even get some "ex-gays" here during awards season, arguing that conversion actually works and their story isn't being represented properly. Oh, this is going to be so much fun...
|by Anonymous||reply 116||07/18/2018|
Xavier Dolan is the teeny tiny guy at 1:07 (and a couple of other quick shots), for those of you who have asked.
|by Anonymous||reply 117||07/18/2018|
r117 Thanks. He seems really short there but not so much at 1:22. Might just be the perspective. I prefer him shorter; he's adorable.
|by Anonymous||reply 118||07/18/2018|
Xavier Dolan is listed at 5'7", which means he is no more than 5'6"
|by Anonymous||reply 119||07/18/2018|
Why hasn't Dolan publicly hit on Hedges? He's the actual gay guy with whom he could end up having sex,i stead of wasting time trying to seduce straight twinks.
|by Anonymous||reply 120||07/19/2018|
[quote]Why hasn't Dolan publicly hit on Hedges?
Maybe he's gotten what he wants—what they both want—without hitting on him publicly.
|by Anonymous||reply 121||07/20/2018|
I bet Dolan seduced half of the cast.
|by Anonymous||reply 122||07/20/2018|
Really looking forward to seeing this not only because of the story (exposing the fraud that's called "conversion therapy"), but also because of Lucas Hedges. This young man seems to have made the most of his connections in the business, which would be off-putting but for the fact that he has shown genuine talent. He was excellent in both Manchester By the Sea and Ladybird, and Boy Erased would be his first actual leading role, quite a test for a young actor. It doesn't matter that your father is a screenwriter and director or how elaborate the star-maker machinery behind you is if audiences don't find your performances compelling or engaging enough to attract and hold their interest and make them want to find out more and follow your progress (i.e, see a certain "Chalamet"). Hedges seems to inspire admiration as a budding personality whose backround in the business shouldn't be held against him, or hatred as an undeserving, bland lightweight coasting on his advantages. As I am of the former point of view, I hope this will be a critical and popular success worthy of at least a best actor nomination for him.
|by Anonymous||reply 123||08/18/2018|
Nic's a bit old to be playing the mother.
|by Anonymous||reply 124||08/18/2018|
She's 51. That's not too old to be the mother of a 19 year old boy.
|by Anonymous||reply 125||08/18/2018|
Review, a thing that stood out to me.
[quote]in fact, the movie is oddly withholding when it comes to acknowledging him as a sexual being
Though it makes sense when you see this
[quote] “Boy Erased” feels like its greatest value will be to parents, particularly those with LGBT children of their own
|by Anonymous||reply 126||09/01/2018|
Why is it called “Boy Erased”? Conversion therapy doesn’t change your biological sex. They should have named it “Love Erased”, or something like that.
The boy isn’t being erased, his sexuality is.
|by Anonymous||reply 127||09/01/2018|
Depressing heavy 'message' cinema for the straights. Pass.
|by Anonymous||reply 128||09/01/2018|
Well that is the name of Garrard Conley's memoir r127, so take it up with him.
|by Anonymous||reply 129||09/01/2018|
"not completely straight but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual"
Gurl, please, you're gay as a picnic basket.
|by Anonymous||reply 130||09/05/2018|
That's cool that he even talked about it at all. He sounds like an unsure young man, so maybe in a couple of years he'll feel comfortable definitively stating his sexuality.
|by Anonymous||reply 131||09/05/2018|
What R131 said. I like him.
|by Anonymous||reply 132||09/05/2018|
Hedges envies people who can speak about such things with more certainty.“People expect you as an actor to have a voice that’s set in some way, and that’s really not what I am,” he says. “I’m very much within the conflict and confusion of my own life, still, and I definitely feel a pressure to step up in a way. I prefer to step up in my art, and I don’t entirely know how to in my life.”
That's fair. I try really hard to see where people are coming from but I still sometimes find it hard to accept people in their twenties and older not knowing where their sexuality lies . Maybe they aren't ready to tell others but by now I would think he knows that he's gay or bi. He knows what gets him hard.
|by Anonymous||reply 133||09/05/2018|
He knows he’s gay. C’mon, guys. It’s crystal clear. But he played the “ fluid” card. Good for him otherwise no more projects and I want him to succeed.
|by Anonymous||reply 134||09/05/2018|
It sounds more like he is pretty much straight but playing up his queerness because he is starring in a Oscar bait gay movie...
I mean his quote is basically claiming he falls way closer to the straight side.

R135 And I’m Maria Theresa. He was really sly, I give him that. But, you don’t have to be a genius to see he’s more rainbow than ever. Anyway....Personally I’m more interested in seeing him in Ben is Back than BE.
|by Anonymous||reply 136||09/05/2018|
Just saying, his "not 100.0% straight but definitely NOT gay or bisexual so you better not call me that" isn't a bust out the champagne moment for me. But to each his own.
I think he is most turned on by possible award love right now.
|by Anonymous||reply 137||09/05/2018|
Exactly. He has 3 movies out this year. The nomination is on its way. Is there a thread for Ben is Back?
|by Anonymous||reply 138||09/05/2018|
I thought he came across as very honest in the interview, not playing games. It sounds like he might be bi discordant, with his romantic attractions predominately directed towards men and his base sexual attraction towards women.
|by Anonymous||reply 139||09/05/2018|
What I got from the previous review, in case you didn't read it-
[quote] (Hedges') Charlie Brown-like face
[quote] (Taylor Swift's boyfriend's part in the film) Its lone sex scene features a horrific encounter with a college crush (Joe Alwyn), who brutally rapes Jared....
|by Anonymous||reply 140||09/05/2018|
The way I see it, he's a gay guy who doesn't want to burn bridges by admitting he's gay, so he leaves all options open and emphasises his heterosexual attractions because his agent might advise him to beard in the future.
At least he hasn't said he's straight. Not that anyone at all would believe THAT.
|by Anonymous||reply 141||09/05/2018|
A round of applause for R141. Finally someone who gets it.
|by Anonymous||reply 142||09/05/2018|
He grew up in the industry with his director dad, so he’s more savvy than he plays with his “unsure” kid schtick.
The Boy Erased reviews are pretty lukewarm though, with Kidman and Crowe getting more notice than Hedges (I think the Variety review gave him all of one sentence) so a nomination is seeming less and less likely.
|by Anonymous||reply 143||09/05/2018|
I think he has a better shot with Ben is Back than Boy Erased. Those clips from the trailer were really good. And the Supporting category this is year is the....void.
|by Anonymous||reply 144||09/05/2018|
I’d say Supporting is pretty tight r144. Chalamet and Elliot are topping most of the early surveys with Richard E Grant third, and guys like Daniel Kaluya, Kyle Chandler, Michael B Jordan, Adam Driver and even Sam Rockwell in the mix.
|by Anonymous||reply 145||09/05/2018|
R135 and R137 Exactly. It reeks of cutting the noose before someone hangs him a la ; "Cis straight white actor steals queer role!" Now all the SJW's can celebrate his part and not drag him, because he 'exists' on the spectrum. Never mind he is saying never call him gay, or even bisexual. YAWN. And if it is like R141, then thats kind of worse to me. Just dont say anything. Dont shit on gay people until you are ready to be completely upfront. Encourages fluidity, change in orientation etc is NEGATIVE to us, even more so when you are starring in a conversion therapy movie.
|by Anonymous||reply 146||09/05/2018|
[quote]The Boy Erased reviews are pretty lukewarm though
Yeah, early reviews make it seem this isn't a powerhouse movie. More of a well made TV movie.

|by Anonymous||reply 149||09/05/2018|
R145 Well, not really. I agree with the names you mentioned, but if a guy under 25 must get in the battle, in this case, is between Lucas and Chalamet. The Academy won’t nominate two twinks for basically the same role: drug addict or ex drug addict. In the BIB tralier he was really good, seriously.

The movie felt too mild to me. Edgerton wants to be even handed and depict the parents and counsellors as misguided people doing what they think is the right thing, rather than villains... but then the film doesn’t have much bite.
I was expecting the conversion therapy to be much harsher than it was. It’s wrongheaded and ridiculous, and the experience would still be upsetting to a young gay person, but he isn’t locked up at night, he’s not really treated badly (within the context), he isn’t given shock treatments or anything like that... i expected something scarier, though maybe I’m too far removed from a kid’s perspective.
Lucas is good in it, though the movie kind of downplays the character’s sexuality. If he gets any Oscar recognition it will be for Ben Is Back, it’s a showier role. Russell looks godawful, though in his defence he’s trying to look like the real dad.

A lot of reviewers have noted that which dissapoints me. Let's make a movie all about gay sexuality without any gay sexuality!

The only sexuality this movie has is the typical "gay are perverts" sexuality portrayal.

Is this the best gay movie for this year?
|by Anonymous||reply 188||10/19/2018|
Just went to screening for SAG Nominating Committee. Nicole Kidman did a Q&A afterward.
I thought it was a well acted but rudimentary film better suited for the small screen. Hedges is great, Crowe is very good and Kidman is extremely touching as the mother. Kidman claimed afterward she’d never heard of gay conversion therapy before reading the book upon which the script is based. I found that to be a tad unbelievable.
In the last ten minutes of the film Jared walks into a party and in the kitchen seems to be embracing someone who looks a lot like Henry, the classmate who raped him in college. And shortly thereafter we see a framed photo of Jared with someone who looks an awful lot like Henry. WTF?
|by Anonymous||reply 189||10/20/2018|
It wasn’t Henry.

I came here to post the same (R67), obviously someone has decided that he can do 'vulnerable closeted gay teen having a crisis' really well. I didn't know he played something similar in Ladybird.
|by Anonymous||reply 191||10/30/2018|
I've often said Luke Hedges was the REAL star of Lady Bird.......But the Timothee Twink Lovers prefer Timothee, no matter how hideous his acting is...
|by Anonymous||reply 192||10/30/2018|
If anyone is interested in a really good portrayal of the inner turmoil of closeted gay teenagers then American Crime series 2 is very good. Unfortunately the main plot revolves around the rape of one of them so it is pretty dark, but both young actors are very good. Unlike in some dramas they are not santised - they're messy and lonely and scared, but also sexual and angry and experimenting, but most of all they feel very real as characters. I read a review that said that 'Boy Erased' had something missing - maybe it's that messiness and complexity?
The main actor, Connor Jessup is very very good, everything about the way he speaks conveys what he's not saying, the pressure to keep everything inside. Felicity Huffman is also great as a headmistress trying to protect the reputation of her private school.

|by Anonymous||reply 195||10/30/2018|
Hedges is the son of writer director Peter Hedges (“what’s eating Gilbert grape “)-hmmm wonder how he got his start -I have no desire to see this movie with ridiculous Nicole Kidman staggering around as a stupid Southern stereotype with hair in rollers and botched Aussie -southern accent -

R135 ----I have a theory about Timothee Chalemet and why so many gay guys "love" him----and it sounds like you might have stumbled on it.......Wait and see---as soon as Timothee doesn't look 15 he won't be a DL Fave anymore....He has no acting range---unless you count his blatant attempt to fool straight people into believing he likes girls.
|by Anonymous||reply 200||10/31/2018|
R200 But honestly, it's hard to not like him as an actor if you see this devastating performance.
|by Anonymous||reply 201||10/31/2018|
There often seems to be a certain blankness to his features too 200, especially in the photo you posted. It partly comes with having pupils that seem to be sitting too high in his eyes, possibly the 'heavy-lidded' look. It ends up looking sleepy and passive, which again fits the image that we're describing.
|by Anonymous||reply 202||10/31/2018|
R201 No thanks. I like MEN----not bottom feminine male models crying because they desperately want an Oscar. At least Lucas Hedges can act.. And if Steve Carell didn't win an Oscar for Foxcatcher (which he should have)---he sure isn't getting one here.
|by Anonymous||reply 203||10/31/2018|
[quote].He has no acting range---unless you count his blatant attempt to fool straight people into believing he likes girls.
In your opinion. He was excellent in a very boring movie CMBMN and has the range of every other 22-year-old in the business. He’s only done 10 movies and been in a lead role in less than half. It’s a little too soon to be talking about range. And I’m not a huge fan.

Focus Features is promoting the hell out of this on Facebook. They even had a panel on LGBTQ+ Films & Filmmakers.

|by Anonymous||reply 211||11/09/2018|
Did anyone go to see this? I saw it yesterday and was very disappointed. I thought that (surprisingly) Russell Crowe was the best actor, by far, in the movie, which I really wasn't expecting after hearing about this kid for months.
|by Anonymous||reply 212||11/10/2018|
The trailer makes it look like a gay movie made for straight audiences.
|by Anonymous||reply 213||11/10/2018|
Because it is.
|by Anonymous||reply 214||11/10/2018|
So basically most gay movies R213
|by Anonymous||reply 215||11/10/2018|
Most gay movies with mainstream stars and Oscar aspirations unforuntately.
But not all and as someone in the LGBT community, I don't really want to sit through a couple of hours of straight people patting themselves on the back about how down they are with "the gays."
I just saw the Freddie Mercury movie and although I appreciate Rami Malek's performance, and I loved seeing "Jamie" from the UK Shameless play a sexy cater waiter. I didn't really appreciate the whole "straight Freddie good/gay Freddie bad" message from the straight bandmates who authorized the movie.
If anyone remembers the movie Jeffrey, where they had that funny little opening about how straight audiences reacted to gay men kissing? The implication was that straight women would think it was adorable and straight men would be disgusted. Except in our audience, all the straight people were disgusted.
While watching Bohemian Rhapsody, nobody reacted to men kissing. It was normal to the audience.
Time for Hollywood to catch the fuck up with audiences at the very least.

R207: Try is the best way to describe it. It was better than the first time but frankly if you don't want to be clear (labels and all that) it's better to think a lot about what you want to say because if not it ends in a nonsense (Jack Falahee knows a lot about that, nobody came out as straight in a most complicated way)
|by Anonymous||reply 218||11/11/2018|
I just saw the movie tonight and was surprised that it was rated R. As others stated it is very much a gay movie made for straights, but by far the most important message it is portraying is the harm that conversion therapy does to young people, so it would have been important to allow an audience of PG13 and above to see it.
I thought when I got my ticket that perhaps there would be a somewhat explicit sex scene, but as others have stated it is pretty much sexless. There is a rape scene, but it is neither that violent nor explicit. The movie Speak from 2004 was about rape and what was shown was comparable and only had a PG13 rating. According to IMDB there are four “Fucks” in it, which I know from reading about The Hate You Give, is three to many to get a PG13 rating, though THUG did lobby successfully to get two “Fucks” and keep its PG13 status. If that was the reason for the R, I wish they would have reduced them to reach a larger audience.
According to IMDB it is certified for ages 11 in Sweden, 12 in Germany, 14A in Canada, 15 in UK and MA 15 in Australia. All more reasonable that R here in the USA. I looked to see what this years other gay conversion therapy film, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, was rated, and it looks like they chose not to as it is listed as NR. Was that a choice because it too was given an R and they wanted it to reach young people so they skipped it? Is that what hurt it’s chances at the box office, as I understand it many chains won’t show an unrated movie. Is it partly because of homophobia that these films have an R rating, the gay content automatically pushing it into an R category?
With Lucas Hedges and Troye Sivan it has the potential to pull in young gay teens who this movie could impact in a positive way, much the way Love, Simon, a PG13 movie, did earlier this year. What gives?
|by Anonymous||reply 219||11/18/2018|
R35 seems you're talking out of your ass and grasping at straws. You provided no reason/example as to why or how American actresses are unprofessional, which is a generalization. Vera Fermiga could've done Toni Collette's part. She can get down and dirty. As others have pointed out, Nicole Kidman is high-maintenance.
The reason why Kidman was hired was because Joel Edgerton (an Aussie) wrote, directed and produced the film. The Aussies look out for each other, as Cate Blanchett once said, since they seem to be a minority in Hollywood, when compared to the Brits and Canadians. When Blanchett won she even mentioned in her speech about Hollywood needing to hire more Aussie talent as if it's the US film industry's responsibility.
|by Anonymous||reply 220||11/18/2018|
R219 here, just confirmed with the article below that Miseducation of Cameron Post avoided MPAA ratings to be able to reach queer youth without being censored for content. There’s mention that the film Because I’m a Cheerleader originally got a NC17 rating despite no nudity and less sexual content then American Pie the same year. They edited down to get a R rating, but again it sounds like homophobia was part of the issue. They concede that there might be problems getting it into theaters, but felt the risk was worth it. Really makes me wish Boy Erased had lobbied hard for PG13, if THUG could have done it this year maybe they could have too.

I was snowed in last March and spent the weekend watching Oscar nominated films and then the telecast. I didn't realize this guy was in both 'ladybird' and '3 billboards'until I was halfway through the second film. Furthermore, later that week when I was headed back east I swear I saw him at the SF airport. I looked at him with what must have been a 'hey aren't you that guy' look on my face because he made eye contact, smiled and nodded. My traveling partner said to me 'hey, isn't that the guy from ladybird?'. I don't know for sure but that's my brush with greatness.
|by Anonymous||reply 223||12/06/2018|
R223, you blew your chance. You could have fucked an Oscar nominee in the airport bathroom.
|by Anonymous||reply 224||12/06/2018|
I saw the film a couple of days ago, and even though the film is understated, it was still discomforting, which was probably the intention. The film suggests that the "therapy" gets worse as the process continues, but the film only shows the initial stages of the conversion process, which was more than enough to show its true nature. If the film had gone over the top, it would be less believable, which would defeat its intentions. Instead, it leaves that to the viewer's imagination.
Hedges, Kidman and Crowe were all believable in their roles. Kidman was much more real than I expected. The movie is overall well done.
