Breed voted in as San Francisco mayor

Breed seems to be a sensible, moderate Democrat.

Who do you think is most to blame for San Francisco's problems with homelessness, crime, needles and filth on the streets?

Gavin Newson deserves credit for his "Care Not Cash" initiative, which stopped giving cash to the homeless. His plan provided services and housing.

Yet, his plan was called "cruel" by his opponents.

SF residents, why did the problem get so much worse after he left office?

Put the drug addicts in jail. Wouldn't that clean up the city?

by Anonymousreply 2July 16, 2018 5:20 AM

in a speech Breed gave , she was big on 'buiding more apts for the hoardes who cum into town needing a place to live'.....screams big biz is in her pocket.

by Anonymousreply 3July 16, 2018 5:25 AM

Does she have a child named “Rare?”

by Anonymousreply 4July 16, 2018 5:28 AM

r2, no SF politician would ever be elected if they ran on that policy.

Why should Breed (like Newsom) be shamed for simply offering to provide housing to those in need?

If Breed can clean up the decades-old filth in SF she could have a very bright future.

by Anonymousreply 5July 16, 2018 5:33 AM

By "housing," she means more expensive apartments and condos for rich people, with a pittance of the worst apartments (facing alleys and noisy lower street-level) for 'Below Market Rate' apartments. By BMR, that means $30,000-$60,000 per household.

Homeless people will still crowd sidewalks, streets, underpasses and alleys in droves until they receive poverty-level group housing, which SF and other cities refuse to do. They are impossible to manage, with drug use, violence and thieving. SROs are hell zones.

Rampant drug use is encouraged and needles litter the streets. SF is too lame to force homeless junkies into rehab, so it will only get worse as long as they are coddled and encouraged to shoot up whatever the fuck they insert into their veins.

Breed is in the pocket of Ron Conway, to the tune of $1.5 million. This will do nothing to help the super-poor.

Wow, DL is on its best behavior tonight.

Congratulations to London Breed.

by Anonymousreply 7July 16, 2018 5:49 AM

All the gays voted for her because her last name reminded them of their favorite -breeding!

R6: [quote] Rampant drug use is encouraged and needles litter the streets. SF is too lame to force homeless junkies into rehab, so it will only get worse as long as they are coddled and encouraged to shoot up whatever the fuck they insert into their veins.

But who is "encouraging" this? The fact that Gavin Newson was run out of town for being too moderate should scare all citizens of this great city.

by Anonymousreply 9July 16, 2018 5:58 AM

But most San Franciscans don't Breed.

by Anonymousreply 10July 16, 2018 6:02 AM

I'm a native San Franciscan, 68 years old. When I was a child we had what we called winos. They lived in cheap flophouses south of Market St and were often drunk or passed out on downtown streets. In the late 60s we had an influx of kids from all around the nation and many damaged their brains with drugs and became homeless. Lots of them were underage runaways, including really young gay kids who sold their bodies and ended up homeless. Ronald Reagan's emptying state mental hospital patients out onto the streets also added to the problem. Most were sent to half-way houses but many preferred the streets. The weather is mild, with a good sleeping bag you can sleep outside all year and there are many hiding places in a big city. Lots of people camp out in parks where foliage is dense. As the cost of housing rose so did homelessness. Now there are many people living on the streets who simply cannot afford a home. Many of those have addictions and mental problems. A few of the addicted and mentally ill actually prefer the streets. The son of an old friend does. He has a loving family with money but won't stay in rehab for more than a day or two before he's back on the streets. He's damaged his brain and is no longer employable. Not that he ever was, he was an addict while still a teen. The City has also long had a reputation for "tolerance" and, along with the weather, drew people who could not adequately care for themselves. The problem is spreading to other larger cities in the state due to the high cost of living.

It's really difficult to see and a really difficult problem to solve. Many are also in and out of jail. A friend who works in law enforcement says they actually are attracted to the main detention facility like moths to a flame and will hang out nearby and do dumb things to get arrested so they can have a night or two in jail. In and out of jail, incapable of helping themselves and too damaged to seek help.

by Anonymousreply 11July 16, 2018 6:11 AM

11 again. There are also many kind people in the City, programs designed to help, and places like Glide Memorial Church who offer free meals every day that attract homeless to SF.

by Anonymousreply 12July 16, 2018 6:13 AM

I would be a very firm supporter of a "Breed-Newsom" ticket in 2020.

by Anonymousreply 13July 16, 2018 6:15 AM

Kamala Harris as San Fran's DA wouldn’t prosecute illegal immigrants, so drug dealers who are illegal, from Mex, Central America, etc., have been allowed to practice their trade. No arrests, even. That policy still operates today.

But r11 post is more thoughtful than this one, pointing to many other causes for the filthy condition of the city’s public spaces. There are no/few flophouses anymore, or SROs, single room occupancy buildings anymore either. So everybody shoots up on the street, out in the open.

The situation has caused loss of convention business in the city, as revealed last week, by local news.

by Anonymousreply 14July 16, 2018 6:20 AM

No one has the guts to provide decent buildings for them to live in with no rules regarding being clean and sober, which is the only way most of them will stay indoors. This has proved to be a solution elsewhere .

For those that won't say indoors under any circumstances (the mentally ill) the only answer is to change the law to allow them to be brought back into hospials, or to build barracks-style communal housing for them out in the desert and move them out there by force. Liberals mostly will never tolerate such thing (Concentration camps! Nazis!), so the crap and the needles continue to pile up.

by Anonymousreply 15July 16, 2018 6:24 AM

San Francisco has been ruled by NIMBYs for decades.

Everyone supports housing and shelters for the homeless in theory, but the rich "latte liberals" refuse to allow shelters to be built in their own neighborhoods.

by Anonymousreply 16July 16, 2018 6:31 AM

Should house them on Alcatraz at night. Dress them in olde time prison uniforms if they stay and they can add a little frisson to the tours.

by Anonymousreply 17July 16, 2018 6:32 AM

by Anonymousreply 19July 16, 2018 7:02 AM

What about the filth associated with Silicon Valley? That is just as bad a plague on the City and no one is talking about cleaning that shit up.

by Anonymousreply 20July 16, 2018 7:16 AM

[quote]sensible, moderate Democrat

Moderate Dumbocrats are by necessity morons, though.

by Anonymousreply 21July 16, 2018 7:20 AM

Sounds like some genuinely good people with that church R12. Government needs to utilize them.

by Anonymousreply 22July 16, 2018 7:39 AM

R19, go, go to Lipstick Alley

by Anonymousreply 23July 16, 2018 7:42 AM

Nothing will be done in SF until there is a large significant, ongoing loss of money from tourism/conventions. The loss is starting now but isn’t widely felt yet.

by Anonymousreply 24July 16, 2018 7:47 AM

I have friends who go to Frisco all the time and love it. They say it's their fave city and they are breeders! LOL

The problem with Cali is it is too successful for its own good. Too many companies, too many jobs, too much good living, too much great weather. All that creates demand and in turn, creates high prices for property.

Texas solved this problem by very high property taxes. Keeps the cost of living down because no one wants to buy huge homes.

by Anonymousreply 25July 16, 2018 7:49 AM

Agree. Moderate Democrats are spinless stupid fucks. That’s what got us a orange fuck for president.

by Anonymousreply 26July 16, 2018 7:56 AM

London Breed is total ghetto. She wanted Dianne Feinstein’s support, but the senator supposedly said no because ghetto came out of her mouth. She also was supposed to have been investigated for taking bribes before being elected mayor. I don’t know how she won, but thankfully Mark Leno didn’t win either. Was tired of his “Make History” campaign to make him the first openly gay mayor of SF. Was I to vote for him just because he was gay? Incompetent as a supervisor of SF and in the state legislature. London Breed will just be another disappointment and embarrassment to SF as the past mayors have been.

SF is too big on political correctness, so we will never solve our issues. Tired of stepping over needles, or seeing people shoot up all over the street. The human shit on the sidewalks are also disgusting. And conventions are starting to turn away from SF — crime against the attendees and tourists. This city is turning into shit.
