I usually don't "develop a hatred" for someone, whether it's someone I know or someone I regard from afar, such as an actor or musician. I'm pretty much a "first impressions" kind of guy. I detested Marky Mark, for example, from the first time I heard his desecration of "Good Vibrations," something no amount of Calvin posturing could change. One exception is Mel Gibson. I started hearing about his homophobia sometime after Tequila Sunrise, and I never saw another of his movies.

R57, I was going to ask the same question for the opposite reason about Gosling. He irritates me more and more and I'm not sure why.

First, he's attractive (thanks to the work done) but gorgeous is subjective I don't necessarily think he's "cool", either. He's prickly, was pissed about gay memes, pretentious, and the way he calls Mendes "my lady" drives me nuts. He's talented in that he can do a lot of things moderately well – dances fairly well, sings(?) mostly on key but not a pleasant voice, and his acting range is limited. I thought he was great in Blade Runner 2049 but he was playing a robot that could shed a tear.

Still not enough to hate him... and yet, he seems to be irritating me more and more – more smug, more pretense not sure what it is.

And these comments that he put out to get films seems credible to me now. I wonder if ti was just putting out for Sandy Bullock or was it Kevin Spacey and other men?

First of all, even if I "liked" the song, that doesn't mean Gosling has "immense talent". The song is okay. I certainly don't find it memorable, and his singing is equally okay and memorable. It's not Chet Baker, though that's clearly who's aping vocally. It's not offkey, but that doesn't show immense vocal talent. His voice is thin, no depth, no resonance, the chain smoking for years hasn't helped and he's basically hitting the notes. It's an empty performance for pretty vacuous song, unless you're in love with L.A. And as I said in the dancing thread, he gets the moves but he's not very fluid. He looks stiff pulling them off.

But your comment is how could I not like the song because it's the best song in the movie? Again, two different things. Best song in a movie with mediocre songs. I'll give you that. What exactly is there to like about it? If you listen to real jazz recordings from countless other composers and singers, there are hundreds of songs more moving and memorable.

Those early performances in HALF NELSON and LARS AND THE REAL GIRL made him seem compelling because he got those shy damaged types, but if you read his bio, maybe you see he really identified with them (not to mention the psychos he played in MURDER BY NUMBERS, THE BELIEVER, and the UNITED STATES OF LELAND).

During his "middle period", when he tried to stretch himself, critics were seeing through the facade as he tried to play cool and tough. He's quote in that bio as saying he tries to talk like Brando. He comes off to me as desperate to be a star without the depth or range to back it up - unless he's really repressing it - but Hollywood loves anyone who wants to prove that the L.A. way is still what America wants to see. He's perfect Hollywood fodder. And now he's playing Neil Armstrong gunning for another Oscar.

He went from the Mickey Mouse club (see those clips where he's freer as a performer)... Hard to get what's up with him.

I think Gosling became a BList actor because his real self was revealed when his team was calling the paps 24/7 on him when he started to date Eva Mendes. Then he gave some really bad performances in lukewarm movies. That and him losing his looks killed his career. In his earlier years he gave some amazing performances in really good movies like Blue Valentine, Drive and Lars and the Real Girl.

I saw Blue Valentine in theatres when I still loved Gosling. Now I cannot even watch it. Williams was great as always even in such a shit role. The whole movie was a shitfest. Terrible story. Poor direction. No sympathetic character to root for.

I actually loved Blue Valentine and was very moved by it. I don't think there was ever a movie about love and loss in such a raw and realistic way.
