Our beloved Meryl Streep kills "The Day Before You Came" from Mamma Mia 2 soundtrack
My favourite ABBA song and one of my all time favourite songs. Such poignant lyrics and quite sad. Their wonderful song really gets a terrific treatment from Meryl's interpretation.
She is very skilled at binging out the emotion of the song. This will likely be her big moment in the new movie. She only has 3 songs on the just-released soundtrack.
What do you think? Agnetha interestingly talked the lyrics in the original which worked really well; apparently their is a version where she sings it too but I've never heard that..

Sick of that bitch. I watch Bruce Willis in Death Becomes Her pushing her down the stairs repeatedly because I hate her acting so much.

The song is dead now for sure. You did it again M!

R6 I guess she is given the direction of the songs in the movie.
To the rest of you, why are you so annoyed with Meryl? Yes she's not the most amazing person in the world but she's a bloody good actress. Please stop being so annoyed with her. I know you are all wonderful, kind people who can see the best in people.
R2 you should be in the sanatorium where Helen Sharp was.

Meryl’s vocals in Into The Woods were reportedly sweetened by beloved Broadway star Ms Donna Murphy.

R12 No they were not. Please stop lying. Doesn't anyone remember why we fell in love with her? Let's forgive and forget, make friends again. Don't let bad feelings come between yourselves and Meryl's lovely version of a wonderful song which I'm sure speaks to more than a few of you lonely DL's out there

R2, that's my second favorite scene of hers. My first is when she get strangled over and over again. She dies so convincingly. Brava, M!

If by 'kills', you mean Meryl made The Day Before You Came unlistenable, then you're spot on.

What have Aghetha and Frieda said about these new renditions by non professional singers?

Atop it, this is a great version. I really think this song will be used in the movie over scenes/flashbacks where we see Donna's last months and death. It is such a sombre tone, I think it could work so well as Donna's swansong. Thoughts?

All the "SHE KNEW" commenters need to shut the fuck up. If I knew my boss was screwing around I certainly wouldn't get personally involved. It's not like these actresses are children. What did you nellies expect her to do? And frankly, I suspect some of the charges of coercion are exaggerated. Note that I am saying exaggerated, not fabricated. I have seen enough ambitious women (and a few men) fuck their way to careers. I think some of these women hoped for a better career and then got upset when they got stuck with lifetime movies. Not that Weinstein isn't a scumbag of course. But for the last time, leave this talented lady out of it, she did nothing wrong.

R20 No, just an adult tired of the bizarre and convoluted guilt by association bullshit. It's like something out of Salem. Interestingly the same "SHE KNEW" shriekers will never mentioned that Borderline Rose really did know and said nothing. It's amazing the hysteria this country will engage in over sexual misconduct while ignoring far, far greater issues.

R19 Thank you. It's so weird so many people have attacked my thread when I wanted to post what I thought was a great rendition of a very special song by an actress I admire. I don't have trolldar so don't know how many posts are by the same person but it's so absurd the disdain she gets from people. And I'm guessing most people who commented didn't even listen to the song.

Streep has turned into a hammy, overacting mess. One has to go back to The D vil Wears Prada to find a really good Streep performance.

M sings but she's not a singer. It is not her forte just like comedy isn't. And those are the two things she wants to do the most. A personal challenge I suppose.

It is a nice version.
I have a feeling this is going to be another huge hit. The first was a smash, ABBA is still beloved and there doesn't seem to be a lot of movies for adults and the comic book fatigue demonstrates a neglected audience.

I'm very sad that so many people have attacked this just because they dislike Meryl. I think it's a wonderful interpretation but hey ho. Sorry if I offended so many people by posting it. She didn't kill it. She euthanized it. It's lifeless. Streep always wants to sing and she's not a singer. There's a reason she didn't get to do Evita and it's not because she wouldn't have made a great Eva Peron. It's because that's a real musical score and a difficult one. Sondheim don't count or Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp are great singers too. INTO the WOODS with James Corden and Chris Pine and Meryl Streep. FUCK.
She started with whimpering Amazing Grace over the credits of Silkwood and like cooking a frog in cool water she has sung more and more over the years, waiting for the public to think she can sing. Ricki and The Flash? Dreadful. Florence Fuck Me Jenkins....Mamma Mia - too fat too old and all wrong for type of clean lyric soprano needed. They hired a whole bunch of worse singers and put the auto tune pedal to the max, and kept the instrumentation real LOUD. The winner takes a fall. OK, that one wasn't AS bad. It suited her hambone style. But she's not a singer. Ever.
Her very worst most cringe worthy vocal is the Blue Rodeo song in Postcards. We were howling with laughter at the end of a very good movie because Meryl's cowgirl "singing" was so methodically bad.

R37get out of my thread you trash. She did a good enough a job with I'm Checking Out for it to be nominated for Best Song 1990. And her Amazing Grace was perfectly in keeping with the tone of Silkwood's ending. She has never tried to be thought of as a singer and Donna isn't meant to be a lithe terrific singer, she's perfectly good for the role. It's about FUN. I did enjoy your frog quip though..

Dallas was changed to House of Cards, Marilyn French to Margaret Atwood. But Chinese food is still Chinese food.
I thought it was lovely, OP. It needs visuals, though, because the song does kind of ramble. Not her fault, it just does, overly long stanzas in strophic form.

I'm really curious as to the context of the song in the movie though. With the updated references, it must be from the perspective of a white-collar woman in this decade--which I cannot fathom the Donna character being.

Loved it and thought it was very moving.
Someone on Twitter who has seen the movie says it’s not in the movie, not even in the closing credits. Apparently it’s a bonus track on the soundtrack only.

I actually think it's one of her better vocals. Honestly, I hated the original film. No real story to speak of and precious little actual dialogue before the shoehorned in another song that had nothing to do with anything on screen. The only highlight was Meryl's The Winner Takes It All, which was surprisingly well sung. Every now and then, she surprises me when she lets loose with her belt. Same with Into the Woods. Some of those belty notes in Stay With Me and Last Midnight were actually pretty great and I'm not surprised there's the rumor about Donna Murphy dubbing a few of those notes for her.

Well, it's not a song that I've never known anyone else to attempt, and Meryl's version is simple and direct. I liked it. Apparently the Queen enjoys dancing to 'Dancing Queen', being quoted as saying, “I always try to dance when this song comes on, because I am the Queen, and I like to dance.” For some reason, that buoys me.

As has been said before, it's not in the movie. Maybe it was originally and was cut because it was too long. The way Meryl sings it -- and she sings it quite nicely -- makes it seem like she's singing about the day before death came. They don't go into how her character died in the movie. Maybe that scene would have, but it made the movie too long or got into details about her death that would have been distracting.

Does anyone know if there was a scene shot for the film, or if it had always been planned as a bonus track? I'm curious.

Danny Boy is one of those insufferably cloying songs that offers nothing but cheap, drunken Irish sentiment. I’ll take a hard pass and Amazing Grace over that drivel any day of the week.
